    EcoSociety Winter MarketsCome to Town

For the rst time, the West Kootenay EcoSociety is puttinon a series of Winter Markets in Nelson.Tese markets willtake place on January 23, February 20, March 19 and April16 at Hart Hall, 501 Carbonate Street, from 10 am to 3 pm.

EcoSociety’s markets & events director, Jesse R. Wood-ward, said that these markets were developed and initiatedbecause there seemed to be lots of genuine interest fromthe public and market vendors in these types of off -seasonevents. “Afer a vendor survey indicated a high interest inwinter markets as well as the EcoSociety’s markets com-mittee advocating for the same idea I decided to moveforward with this concept”, Woodward said. “Tere is agrowing appetite in the general public for supporting thelocal economy and locally made goods and these marketsare assisting in that movement.”

Like the summer markets, there will be a wide varietof locally hand-made items for sale including body careproducts, baked goods, art, amazing pottery and muchmore. Te winter markets will also be featuring a num-ber of local farmers who will have winter produce, locallraised meats and farm fresh eggs for sale. A $2 donation isbeing requested at the door to help EcoSociety cover thecosts of these indoor markets.

If you are looking for something locally made, distinc-tive and unique for yourself or the special people in yourlife, don’t miss out on being a part of the EcoSociety win-ter markets. Bring your family and friends and come andsupport your local community of crafers and artisans.

Ecosociety Brings Fractured Land To Nelson

“Anyone who can throw a hatchet and sue you, is a forceto be reckoned with.”Tat’s how renowned climate activ-ist Bill McKibben describes Caleb Behn, a young FirstNations warrior and lawyer who may become one of hisgeneration’s leaders - if he can discover how to overcomefractures within himself, his community and the world

around him.Filmmakers, Fiona Rayher and Damien Gillis followed

Caleb for four years to make Fractured Land. Tey cap-tured hundreds of hours of footage of his development, through law school, sharing knowledge with other indig-enous peoples, speaking to larger and larger audiences, dealing with deep community divisions and building amovement.

Caleb sports a Mohawk and tattoos, hunts moose andwears a business suit. His father is a devout environmental-ist and residential school survivor. His mother is in a seniorposition in the oil and gas industry. His people are deeplydivided. Tey are at the epicenter of some of the mostdestructive fracking operations on earth. How does Calebbalance their need for jobs with his sacred duty to defendtheir territory? He has arrived at a key moment in history, sees the contradictions and wants to reconcile them.

Te West Kootenay EcoSociety is bringing this amaz-ing lm to Nelson. Fractured Land   will be screened onJanuary 22 at the CapitalTeatre at 7 pm. Tere will be aQ&A with the director, Damien Gillis afer the show.Tisscreening will be a benet for both the EcoSociety and thelmmakers. Tickets will be $15 for general admission, $10for students, seniors and EcoSociety members.

West Kootenay EcoSociety is a non-prot organizationlocated in Nelson. Trough education, outreach, com-munity building, research and advocacy, the EcoSocietyworks to protect the natural environment while buildinga just and sustainable world.

You badly want to move back to Ontariowith the kids, where you were raised and therest of your large family lives. Your husbandobjects, leading to your marriage breakingup. Like you have all along, you both co-parent the kids in the roughly two years ittakes for your divorce to be sorted out.

Should you be able to move with the kids?

Our BC appeal court recently re-visitedthis thorny “mobility” question.

Hong Kong-born Cindy (names changed)came to Toronto with her Chinese familywhen she was four. She moved to Vancouverin 1998 afer becoming a vet, and met herfuture husband Todd the following year. In2000 she joined him in Victoria where he livedand worked, and they got married in 2002.

     T

ey had two children, Adam and Ellen, but afer some nine and a half years ofmarriage, they split up over Cindy’s wish tomove the family to Toronto. Cindy went tocourt for a divorce and permission to movewith the kids.

Te key question in these mobility cases isalways whether a move would be in the bestinterests of the children.Te court looked atthe various factors that have to be balancedto decide this. It stressed that each familysituation needs to be treated individually.

Here, both children had an excellentrelationship with Cindy and Todd, whowere loving parents, and wanted to stay withboth. A psychological evaluation suggestedwhat was best for the children going forwardwas both parents continuing to look afer

them, either in Victoria or in Toronto (ifboth parents moved there).

Cindy argued that her moving and takingthe kids was best for them – they could becloser to her extended family and benetfrom more exposure to their Chinesecultural heritage.

But the court decided that, in the

particular circumstances here, it was moreimportant that Cindy and Todd continue toco-parent the kids.

One signicant element was thatAdam had fallen ill at 18 months anddeveloped learning and other difficulties. He was diagnosed as hyper-active withattention decits and also had non-speciccommunication disorder. But with a specialindividual education plan in school, he was

making progress and could now just meethis minimum grade level standards. He waswell-liked by his classmates. Te disruptionof moving him to a whole new environmentwould set him back more than other kids.

Also, Cindy could pursue her workequally well in Toronto or Victoria, butTodd couldn’t. He had worked his way up inone company over 20 years and now held anexecutive position there, though he didn’thave corresponding academic credentials.Unlike Cindy, if he moved to Toronto to benear the kids, a similar position was likelyout of reach, so he might not be able toprovide as well for the kids.

Te court concluded that being co-parented in Victoria was best for thechildren in this case.

    Legendary PerformanceComing To Rossland

Te musical sounds of jazz legend Dave Brubeck will

be brought to life by the Remi Bolduc Jazz Ensemble onJanuary 22, in the nal installment of the Rossland Coun-cil for Arts and Culture’s 2015/2016 performance series.

Remi Bolduc, one of Canada’s best jazz saxophonists, ives in Montreal, where he is a professor and Area chair

of the jazz department at McGill University. He has beennuenced by and has collaborated with, many inuen-

tial jazz musicians of our time such as Kenny Werner, JoeLavano, Chris Potter and Dave Douglas.

With pianist Francois Bourassa, Fraser Hollins onacoustic bass and Dave Laing on drums the Remi Bolduc

Jazz Ensemble Tribute to Dave Brubeck promises a ver-satile, dynamic and breathtaking performance. Te pro-gram includes Take Five, Blue Rondo a la Turk and severalother compositions from the Brubeck album Time Out -one of the most famous and best-selling albums in thehistory of jazz.

Dave Brubeck was considered to be one of the foremostexponents of cool jazz, very few American jazz musicianshave been as popular or had as much inuence. In TeGuardian, John Fordham said “Brubeck’s real achieve-ment was to blend European compositional ideas, very

demanding rhythmic structures, jazz song forms andmprovisation in expressive and accessible ways.” Te

Daily Telegraph music journalist Ivan Hewett wrote, “Hiswork list is astonishing, including oratorios, musicalsand concertos, as well as hundreds of jazz compositions.Tis quiet man of jazz was truly a marvel.” Brubeck wasdubbed the jazz hero of the rock and roll generation.

Brubeck passed away in 2012, but the Remi Bolduc JazzEnsemble is keeping his music alive. Join the RosslandCouncil for Arts and Culture at the Miners’ Hall on Fri-day, January 22 and hear the stuff  that legends are made of.

Te doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 7:30.Tickets are $20 and are available at Out of the Cellar inRossland, the Charles Bailey Teatre Box Offi ce in Trailand online at rosslandartscouncil.com

Snack Your Way To A Healthier YouWe all know fruits and vegetables are good for us. For

the estimated 87% of Canadian women who will resolve toeat healthier in 2016, adding wholesome snacks like fruit,

vegetables and yogurt can be the perfect solution to stayon track and avoid the temptations that can derail a diet.

According to a recent survey by Leger and Activia, only 16% of Canadian women manage to keep their NewYear’s resolutions. Turning a resolution into a long-termhabit takes more than just motivation: almost one third ofwomen have failed to keep resolutions that they believewere unrealistic to achieve, while 23% believe that theseobjectives are diffi cult to integrate to their routine.

Te trick to achieving healthy eating goals can be assimple as making smarter choices. “Tere is a denite mis-conception that healthy eating means depriving yourselfof delicious food,” says professional home economist andcookbook author, Mairlyn Smith. “A successful long-termhealthy eating plan includes incorporating nutritious ele-ments. In other words, eat - but eat the right foods.”

Smith suggests the top three tips for sticking to yourhealthy eating goals:

    1. Replace high fat and or sugary baked goods withhealthier choices. For example, swap your afernoonempty calorie snack with a crunchy apple, or choose a

small handful of heart healthy nuts instead of a high fatsnack like chips.

    2. Choose options that can provide essential nutrientssuch as yogurt. Not only is yogurt an essential source ofprotein, but it can also be a convenient source of dairy,as recommended by Canada’s Food Guide. “Te ActiviaChallenge, can be the ideal tool to introduce yogurt intoyour diet. By encouraging participants to eat Activiatwice a day, the challenge is a simple, delicious way towork towards a new healthier lifestyle,” says Smith.

    3. Get a friend involved. Sharing a mutual goal makes it

more achievable - and can be an essential source of moralsupport.

    Time Travel Achieved In Rossland!

Te Miners’ Hall hosted a veritable who’s when of cel-ebrators on New Year’s Eve. 1920s appers rubbed elbowswith disco divas, medieval ladies and futuristic robots at

the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture’s (RCAC) TimeTravellers’ Ball; there was even an appearance by Dr. Who!

Upon entering the Miners’ Hall, party goers experiencedwalking through a time machine and found themselves at aparty to rock all the ages!Tere was a full-sized Tardis andphoto op area, a fun Steam Punk lounge area, a 1970s discobar, decor from the past and present and nostalgic andfuturistic icons throughout. Over 100 attendees enjoyedmusic by DJs RSK and Sexton Blake, a costume contest, prizes and era themed burlesque and boy-lesque perfor-mances, that one reveller dubbed as “side splitting funny”.

Te party was a fundraiser for the renovation and res-toration of the Miners’ Hall attic, which is scheduled tostart this spring; the event successfully raised over $3500for the project.

“We couldn’t be happier with the way the event turnedout,” said Kimberley Pegg of RCAC. “Te music andentertainment were fantastic, the crowd was great andhad put a lot of eff ort into their costumes and we raised agood amount of money for the Miners’ Hall project. All inall, an extremely successful event.”

RCAC is still working to raise more funds for the Min-ers’ Hall before construction starts in the spring. Be onthe lookout for upcoming events. If you would like toknow more about the Hall renovation and restoration, orto make a contribution to the project, visit www.rosslan-dartscouncil.com
