Having run a fundraiser forthe Royal Flying DoctorService, local blokes

Marcus Barker and Mark Chaplainset off with nine others to ridemotorbikes from Trafalgar up toLorella Springs in the Northern

Territory to attend a motorbike rallycalled the Off Centre Rally .

We left Trafalgar and went toBall arat, where we met up with fourof the other riders and from thereour first stop was Mildura.

The next day we were supposedto meet another rider, Tim, at LakeMenindee but due to some mechani-cal problems he was held up andtold us to continue on, and that hewould catch up to us.

So we continued on and spent thenight at Packsaddle, where wecamped and were just about blownaway by strong winds.

The next day we set off forCamerons Corner and camped inthe desert fifty kilometres west of

Camerons Corner. Then it was on to Innamincka to

meet up with another of the riders,

Kevin, but he was not there and therewere no messages and no way ofcontacting him, so we left a messagefor him and went on, camping in thedesert again, half way acrossWalker's Crossing.

The stars at night were beyond

belief; huge skies with very brightstars. It just mesmerised us.

Next morning it was on to

Birdsville where we actually didmanage to meet up with anotherrider, Rex, who was from Cairns.

By now we had heard that Kevinhad fallen off in the sand and brokenhis ankle, and a passing Santosworker took him up to their medical

cli nic . Two days later they flew himhome to Brisbane on the companyplane, sending his bike back on a

company truck , not bad.Tim, who was with him, contin-

ued on taking Kevins Epirb withhim, which was very fortunatebecause further up the tr ack he too,had a fall and broke his l eg and col-larbone.
