Ancient city dating from 400-350 BC, Craiova is the

most important settlement in the south-west of the

country, situated in the heart of Oltenia and about 220

km away from the capital city of the country -

Bucharest.

Craiova is today a city with a strong socio-economic

development, with over 300,000 inhabitants, whichannually adds about 30,000 students receiving training

at the University of Craiova.

With deep roots in the past and looking towards a

bright future, Craiova now lives in multiple changes at

an urban, economic and social level.

BRIEF HISTORY OF ACADEMIC EDUCATION

IN CRAIOVA

The University of Craiova appeared in the system of

the academic institutions in Romania in mid-twentieth

century, in the historical order being the fifth

university, after those in Iasi, Bucharest, Cluj and

Timisoara.

Its legal foundation was made by Law 138 for the

establishment and organization of the University of

Craiova and its Eforia, passed by the Assembly of

Deputies, in the meeting of April 5, 1947, andapproved by a majority of 150 votes (against 3) The

president of the Assembly of Deputies was Mihail

Sadoveanu, the writer.

The law was promulgated by King Michael Ist in

April 21, 1947 and appeared in the Official Gazette

Friday, April 25, 1947.

In Cap. I / Art. 2 of the Act of foundation of the

University of Craiova it was stated that it will workfor the moment, with the following faculties:

a) Faculty of Human Medicine;

b) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine;c) Faculty of Economics, Trade and Cooperative;

d) Faculty of Agriculture. "Another paragraph of Law 138 made it clear that the

faculties will start their courses "at the beginning of

the academic year 1947-1948, only for the years for

which they could organize departments. Article 4

stated, in a generous and optimistic manner, that: "As

the budgetary needs and opportunities, the University

will be completed with other faculties too."

As every beginning requires the confrontation of

inevitable difficulties, the chances offered by the act

of law became real only for the Faculty of

Agriculture, other departments could not be

substantiated due to the lack of required

infrastructure.

Agricultural academic education started in Craiova on

March 29th

, 1948, having a total number of 200

students.In 1948 there was a reorganization of the academic

education of Craiova, when the Institute of Agronomy

with two faculties: Agriculture and Agricultural

Machinery (which later became the Faculty of

Agriculture Mechanization) was created.

Between 1948-1958, the Institute of Agronomy had

departments and specializations with a teaching staff

of a real value, who founded the agricultural researchin Craiova and other qualifications of the agronomists

in Oltenia - until 1966, including, in Craiova 1482

agronomists graduated.From 1962 until 1966 there is a new stage in the life

of the Institute of Agronomy in Craiova, mainly,illustrated, by transferring, by decision of the Ministry

of Education, of the Faculty of Agriculture

Mechanization from Craiova to the Polytechnic

Institute of Timisoara, and of foundation of the

Faculty of Horticulture, in the same year.

August 1965 (published in the Official Gazette of the

RSR, no. 2 of 10 September 1965) University of

Craiova is created. The document stated that with the

foundation of University, the Institute of Agronomy

ceased its activities, its faculties becoming

subordinated to the University.

University of Craiova managed during 1966 - 1989 to

create its own academic structure by the

administrative and functional integration of different

specializations into a unitary institution.Since 1990 a new phase of the University of Craiova

started. This was characterized in particular by

increasing the autonomy of the academic structure and

reorganizing the administrative structure by creating

new faculties and specializations, through the

computerization of the educational process and

modernization of the laboratories, through rapid

integration into the international academic circuit.In 2009 after the institutional assessment made by the

Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in

Academic Education - ARACIS, University ofCraiova has received the "high degree of confidence."

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE IN CRAIOVA

After 1990 the Faculty of Agriculture in Craiova hasundergone profound transformations by reorganizingdepartments, setting up new curricula, training of new

teachers in most subjects in the curricula and enhancing

research programs.The social, economic and scientific impact which theFaculty of Agriculture of Craiova exerted over the zone

of influence in time can be found everywhere. Theoutstanding achievements in science embodied in thedevelopment of new technologies of plant cultivation,improvement of existing technological sequences,creation of new varieties and hybrids of crops, etc..,Craiova, Faculty of Agriculture has contributed greatly tothe scientific progress both national and international ofthe excellence research in Romania.The mission of our faculty is that to train qualified expertsin several key areas: Agricultural and Forestry Sciences -

Agriculture, Forestry and Climbing, Engineering SciencesLand, Land measurements, Food Control andExpertise. Throughout its existence, the Faculty of

Agriculture of Craiova, has become a strong educationand research center, representative for Oltenia area,

experts trained here being appreciated for contributingdecisively to the development of agriculture in the area.Due to the promoted curricula our faculty offers thepossibility to the school graduators to develop skills andacquire knowledge in appropriate education ways andavailability of each individual personality. These aredeveloped in accordance with the ARACIS requirementsand regulations and ensure compatibility not only with the

national qualifications but also with the related educationprograms of the EU, in compliance with the ETCS systemof transferable credits.Thus, the students of our faculty can receive scholarshipsat our partner universities abroad, within some programs- Socrates - Erasmus, etc..DPPD courses attendance, allows getting the attestation

Sports, which offers the chance to teach at any level.Among the facilities offered to our students are: theacquisition of computer knowledge, the study of

international foreign languages, participation inprofessional-sports competitions among universities andthe possibility of obtaining a driver license of B category.The Faculty of Agriculture has its own building with anarea of over 8000 m2, equipped with classrooms,laboratories, offices, needed to run teaching processproperly. In addition to this, the faculty also has otherexpanded and modernized training and research rooms(training halls for the agriculture mechanization subjects,practice and training centers for students, etc..).

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

The objectives of the research conducted by the team ofteachers and researchers from the Faculty of Agricultureof Craiova are oriented towards European priorities:sustainable agriculture with natural resource protection,food security, biodiversity conservation and use.Research also includes the development of modern

technologies for crop cultivation in the area of the facultyinfluence, rational use of sands of Southern Olteniamountain pasture improvement, ecological rehabilitationof degraded forest land, the greening of the vegetablessystem by converting some technological sequences inorder to prevent and / or minimize environmental pollutionand achieving organic products, obtain new genotypes ingrain beans and groundnuts, studies on nutrient and soil

loss in hilly areas.Carrying out these activities is done through severalresearch centers operating under the direct guidance ofour faculty, contributing to the students, Master and PhDgraduators achievement of practical skills andcompetencies, centers located in different geographicaland eco - training conditions:
