Bethlehem AcademyAdvancement/Alumni OfficeIt is with great appreciation to all the people we’ve met throughthese past five years at Bethlehem Academy for giving us theopportunity to learn more about the great history of the schooland to work with those whose efforts make BA great.

At the beginning of July, I will begin a new chapter in lifereturning to the radio business in Mankato. This move willallow me the ability to be closer to family including our foursons, two granddaughters and future grandchildren!

During my time here at BA, we have made so many new friendswho believe in the future of the school. These folks speakproudly of seeing their children and grandchildren graduate fromBethlehem Academy. Others are graduates who live across thenation and who hold a soft spot in their hearts for BA.

Besides working with fine teachers and staff who bring so manytalents to the school, it has been my great pleasure to work sideby side with Sr. Theresa Thomas, BA ’53, who volunteers inthe Advancement Office as the school archivist and source forAlumni information. And to work with former ConsolidatedCatholic School Principal Sr. Catherine Lyons, who helps inthe BA Library and in the Advancement office.

These two Sinsinawa Dominicans are wonderful ladies whorepresent the greatness of BA. Sr. Theresa is a great story tellerand a great friend. I’ll always remember the story she told abouther late mother,Margaret (Fox) Thomas, BA ‘31, who helpedorganize the first BA Food Stand at the Rice County Fair backin the 1950s. Her mother butchered chickens early in themorning and then brought the birds to the BA Food Stand to befried and sold to help benefit BA students. Great history!

Sr. Catherine received her Master’s in Education years ago andwas always fond of saying as we placed labels and stamps onletters, “I got my Master’s for this?” We joked with each otherby achieving these tasks telling ourselves that maybe we werereaching our competency levels. Great humor! Both of theseladies have been great guides for me during my time at BA. Iwill miss them dearly.

It’s been my great pleasure to be a small part of BA’s greathistory over these past five years. I’ll always remember BAandthe great people I’ve had the privilege to meet. The school is in

good hands and will continue to thriveand succeed…thanks to support fromyou.

By Jessie Kelly

This past February, 39 Bethlehem Academy 8th grade studentsand chaperones embarked on a trip to the north woods ofMinnesota for a weeklong educational field trip. This tripmarked the 6th annual voyage north, but this year the studentswere able to attend all 5 days instead of the 2 ½ days fromprevious years.

Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center is located inFinland, MN and is where the outdoors meets classroominstruction. The students took classes in individual growth, ecology, astronomy, and outdoor recreation. This non-traditionaltype of learning takes students out of the classroom and putsthem outdoors where they are able to make a personalconnection with the environment. Students were able to havebirds land on their heads, get up close and personal with a white-tailed deer, catch a fish, build a fire and winter shelter, rockclimb, and cross country ski, among many other activities.

The week was rounded off with a beautiful Mass by Father EricLundgren followed by group skits, and a campfire in whichstudents were able to share with one another what they werethankful for.

As the lead teacher, I was incredibly thankful for the opportunityto take such wonderful, respectful young men and women onthis trip. I was reminded once again just how special our kids areand how proud I am to be a part of the Bethlehem Academyfamily.

Opportunities and BlessingsBy Oscar Gomez, BA Class of 2007

When I first arrived at Bethlehem Academy as an 8th grader in2003, I struggled to adjust, but was able to find my way thanksto many people.

My first year was difficult. I had new teachers to get used to, Iwas alone, and I didn’t have any friends. I also had to learn tobe more responsible with my homework at BA. At the publicschool I had mentors to help me since English is not my firstlanguage.

There were many times I told my parents I didn’t want to go toBA because I missed my friends. Even though my parentsunderstood my feelings, they insisted that BethlehemAcademywas the best place for me.

By the end of the school year in 8th grade I had made friendswith some students in my class. While I was the only Hispanicand the only one in class with a funny accent, I felt accepted.

The years went by and my English started getting better day byday, and of course, my grades got better as well. Encouragingme to attend BA was one of the best decisions my parents made.

If I hadn’t attended this great school I would never have metsuch wonderful people as Mr. Thibault. He introduced me tothe world of woodworking and taught me how to create beautifulprojects. Matt Musel was another great person I met at BA. Hewas always there to help me with homework and to figure outwhat I wanted to do with my life after graduating from highschool. Thanks to Matt, I was introduced to Joe Varley. Joe isthe nicest person I have ever met (of course after my parents). Idon’t think I will ever finish thanking him for all the things hehas done for me. Joe gave me a job for the last five summers soI could pay for college. Joe will always be a role model for me.He has taught me how to help my community, how to be aresponsible worker, and how to always use your head – evenwhen you are just mowing the lawn.

I recently received my Carpentry Diploma and am currentlyfinishing up my A.A.S. degree in Construction Supervision. Iwill soon begin my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Managementat Dunwoody College of Technology. Hopefully, I can becomea great General Contractor someday.

I don’t know if I can express enough how much my BAexperience has changed my life because words cannot cover it.But what I do know is that if it wasn’t for BA I wouldn’t be theperson I am today!
