Dear Alumni and Friends:

I begin this Annual Report on a personal note by thanking all those who participated with me in celebrating the Golden Jubilee of my ordination to the Priesthood. I deeply appreciate the many prayerful good wishes you extended to me in connection

with the celebratory events in May. I am especially grateful to those who

generously presented me with wonderful gifts. It is a matter of great personal satisfaction to me that the Lord has enabled me to spend twenty-one of my fifty years in the priesthood in service to the Bishop Amat High School Family.

I am pleased to inform our stakeholders that notwithstanding the challenging economic conditions which continued to plague our families we ended the fiscal year with the financial affairs of the school in excellent shape. We achieved a budget surplus of $419,000.00, grew the Endowment Fund by 23% and the Named Scholarship Funds by 19%. We also grew our Capital Improvement Fund by 102% to $872,020.00 and throughout the year maintained an operational surplus of slightly in excess of $1,000,000.00.

These achievements are noteworthy in light of the fact that we still have one of the lowest tuition and fees schedule in the Archdiocesan school system and that we upped our financial aid allotment by 25.8% to $390,000.00. Moreover, we took a onetime special charge of $380,000.00 against our Capital Improvement Fund to pay for the installation of air conditioning throughout the campus.

It should be noted that none of these budgetary successes were achieved by compromising the quality of our traditional religious and educational programs. We have a highly qualified and dedicated faculty whose members, under the leadership of first year principal, Mr. Richard Beck, worked tirelessly to meet the educational needs of our students. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate results were excellent and members of the graduating class gained admission to some of the most elite colleges and universities throughout the nation.

Looking to the future I am optimistic that the general economic conditions will continue to improve, led by the housing and automobile industries. I am also looking for economic growth development in California, buoyed by expansion in the high tech fields. This should alleviate many of the problems in the State budgetary situation and trigger an uptick in public sector employment. Realistically, however, the need to make attendance at the school affordable for our traditional client families will remain a daunting challenge for some time to come.

Alumni have an indispensable role to play in helping us to meet that challenge. We have abundant evidence that the vast majority of you love and respect Bishop Amat High School. We have no doubt that you want to see it continue to thrive and attain new heights of excellence in its educational mission. Many of you have been generously assisting us with your time, talent and treasure as we strive to attain that goal. I earnestly appeal to those of you who have not already done so to become part of this great crusade to ensure that Amat will shine not only “tonight” but into the distant future as well.

Dear Friends:

The 2012-2013 edition of the Annual Report provides a perfect opportunity to highlight a few of our academic and extracurricular developments that contribute to the tradition of excellence you, as alumni, have established and fostered through the years.

As a comprehensive school, our academic program is always expanding to meet the educational needs and interests of our student body. With seventeen Advanced Placement courses offered including AP Physics and our newest addition, AP Human Geography taught at the freshman level, our advanced curricular program continues to thrive. Moreover, as we begin our ninth year as an authorized school, we celebrate our most recent graduates who earned the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma this past summer. Additionally, electives offered in college writing, digital graphic design, fitness, and photography complement our educational program.

In keeping current with educational technology, many of our teachers now incorporate the use of iPads and similar devices in their daily instruction. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops and tablets for note-taking, research, and as a single source for textbooks available in electronic format. Our (air conditioned!) classrooms are equipped to allow for teachers and students to utilize our recently acquired class-set of iPads with applications that enhance instruction and learning across all subject areas.

With well over two-thirds of students participating in our athletic and extracurricular programs, the rich tradition of student involvement beyond the classroom continues as a cornerstone of a Bishop Amat education. If you have not recently attended a Bishop Amat athletic contest, choral performance, band concert, dance or theater production, we would be delighted if you could join us on campus this year. Additionally, our biannual Career Days provide alumni with the opportunity to speak about their chosen professions to our junior students. If interested in participating in the December and/or February presentations, please contact our Career Counselor, Mrs. Teri George ‘80 ([email protected]) for more details.

As always, our school website (bishopamat.org) with its alumni portal and Facebook page (facebook.com/bishopamat) serve as sources for news and updates related to all things Amat. I encourage you to refer to these sites often.

We look forward to your continued support of your alma mater!

Members of the Bishop Amat High School Class of 2013 were accepted at the following 4-year Colleges and Universities:

Private & Independent College &

Universities in the State of California

Among the top graduating Seniors of the Class of 2013 are Valedictorian Daniel Ramos (Stanford), Salutatorian Olivia Egger (Fordham), graduation speakers Anthony Sidhom (Claremont McKenna College) and Olivia Hummer (Stanford) and Bishop Amat’s first Gates Millenium Scholar, Thomas Rivera (pictured with Msgr. Aidan M. Carroll).

The Gates Millenium Scholar Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, provides 1,000 talented students each year a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, books and living expenses. The scholars are also provided with personal and professional development through the Gates leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college careers which prepares them to assume important roles in their professions and in their communities.

In addition to becoming a Gates Millenium Scholar, Thomas was also among twenty-four high school seniors who were awarded a Milken

Family Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $10,000.00. Candidates for the Milken Scholarship were chosen based on their academic performance, community service, leadership and ability to persevere in the face of challenges. Thomas will be attending Pomona College.

The Counseling Department at Bishop Amat High School has long recognized the importance of providing our students with guidance regarding their future career choices. Never ceasing to be amazed at the depth and

variety of their intellectual and vocational skills, we seek to steer them towards occupations that will challenge them to excel and fulfill their life aspirations in their post-Amat years.

One of the means we use to further this objective is our biannual Career Day – held this year on February 20, 2013. Following our usual practice we invited several successful individuals from the professional, business, public service and general work worlds to come on campus and make presentations to interested students in assigned classrooms.

Noteworthy, as always, among this group were several of our own Bishop Amat alumni. Ken Kendrena,’88, enthralled his listeners

with his account of how he founded his own very successful company, Inside Edge. Attorney, Patricia Young, Esq.,’97, gave a fascinating account of her work as a Deputy Federal Public Defender with convicts on Death Row at San Quentin. Joycelyn Mallari Yamzon, Ph.D., ’96, an Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Loma Linda University informed students on the steps they must take to become pharmacists. Joycelyn is married to Jonathan Yamzon, M.D., a specialist in the field of Urology at the City of Hope.

Other alumni presenters included, Nino Vanillo, ‘84 (LA County Firefighter), Jeriel Lagac, R.N.,’02 (Registered Nurse), Michael Lange, ’02 (Wells Fargo Bank), Alicia Cantwell, ‘87 (Occupational Therapist), Erik Espinoza, ’93 (Director of Sports Video, USC), Christine Hernandez, ’93 (Social Worker) and Nicole Burgos Lange, ’02 (U.S. Secret Service).

We are deeply grateful to these individuals for their support of our educational programs.

Career Day 2013

Bishop Amat Students Feed the Homeless

On Tuesday, February 12, twenty-five Bishop Amat students after a busy day of studies and activities headed for St. Martha Church in Valinda. Their goal, to serve a nourishing dinner to some 175 homeless men and women who were being provided with overnight shelter in the parish hall.

For many years the parish has participated in a four month long program operated by an interfaith coalition in the San Gabriel Valley that provides this vital service to homeless people during the coldest and wettest time of the year. When he sponsors the program for fourteen days during February, Father Mauricio Goloran, the Pastor, invites various groups, including Bishop Amat students, to assume responsibility for serving the evening meal on one occasion.

As in previous years, our Christian Service Moderators Mr. Bernie Kasilag and Ms. Cindy Medina enthusiastically assumed leadership roles in the project. They recruited and briefed students who wished to participate. They signed up parent volunteers who would chaperone the students. To ensure that the guests would have a hearty meal they arranged with Mr. Jim Bevers, Proprietor of the Lancer Café, to serve generous portions of turkey, stuffing, gravy and potatoes followed by ice cream, cookies and coffee to the guests.

Participation in the program counted as a partial fulfillment of the students’ twenty hour Christian Service requirement for this year. “The students did an excellent job”, said Ms. Medina, “and really enjoyed being a part of the event.” Mr. Kasilag added, “This was a great opportunity to share our blessings with some very needy people and clearly indicated our students’ love for Christian Service.”

orn in Sligo, Ireland, a young Aidan Carroll enrolled at All Hallows Seminary in Dublin at the age of seventeen. He earned a BA in Philosophy from the National University in Dublin and was ordained a priest for the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles on June 16, 1963.

Arriving in Los Angeles on July 29, 1963 he was assigned as an Assistant Pastor at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Burbank. In that capacity he served as a part-time teacher of Religion in Bellarmine Jefferson High School which was operated by the parish. He was subsequently assigned to pursue graduate studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where in 1967, he earned an MA in Education.Upon returning to Los Angeles he was appointed

Asst. Superintendent of Secondary Schools. In this position he monitored the financial operation of some forty archdiocesan and parish high schools.

In 1974 he returned to the Catholic University of America for two more years of graduate studies in the field of education. He was assigned to St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs where he served as principal for ten years. In 1986 Cardinal Roger Mahony appointed him to a five-year term as Superintendent of Schools with responsibility for the supervision of all Archdiocesan schools, K-12.

On completion of this assignment, Monsignor Carroll was afforded the opportunity to take a nine month sabbatical at the Jesuit Graduate School of

Theology in Cambridge, MA. When he returned to the Archdiocese in 1992 he was assigned as Principal of Bishop Amat High School. In 2002, Cardinal Mahony appointed him President of Bishop Amat High School, the position he currently holds.

During his tenure of twenty-one years at Bishop Amat High School, Monsignor Carroll has excelled in his pursuit to provide students with state-of-the-art facilities by increasing the number of science labs on campus, remodeling the Brutocao Library in 1995, constructing a performing arts building that houses the choral, band and drama programs, and conducted a successful capital campaign to construct a new student activities building (Carroll Center). In 2013 Monsignor Carroll air conditioned all classrooms on the Bishop Amat campus. To ensure the long-term financial stability of the school, he established an Endowment Trust Fund that currently stands at $1,425,081. He is also responsible for establishing 35 named scholarship funds that will provide lasting financial aid to students who are unable to afford the full tuition to attend Bishop Amat High School. The principal of these scholarship funds has grown to $3,026,245.

Monsignor Carroll made the conscious decision to spend his entire life as a priest in the ministry of Catholic education because of his deep conviction as to the importance of that ministry to the life of the church. In all the positions in which he has served, he has sought to strengthen the Catholicity of the schools, to enhance the academic excellence for which they have long been noted, to make them available to families of limited financial resources and to prepare lay people for the leadership and staffing roles they must play in the schools in the absence of Religious personnel.

On May 10, 2013, the Bishop Amat Family celebrated a Mass in honor of Monsignor Carroll’s 50th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. St. Martha Parish in which Monsignor Carroll resides celebrated his Anniversary on June 16. All Hallows Seminary in Ireland hosted a reunion for his Class of 1963 on July 18, 2013.

Congratulations to Monsignor Carroll and a special “thank you” from the Amat Family for all that he has done on behalf of the students, parents, faculty and staff of Bishop Amat High School.

ciF girls soccer division 3 champions

The 2012-2013 school year was filled with many top spots for our sports teams in their respective leagues. Numerous student athletes received top rankings and were qualifiers individually, while working as a team

to make for a triumphant and remarkable year for the Bishop Amat Lancers.

The football season started off with a bang, winning five of six pre-season games by 10 points or more against such teams as Servite, Charter Oak, and St. Paul. The beginning of the Serra League games got off to a shaky start with a loss to Bishop Alemany, who has remained one of the top teams in the league. The Lancers picked it back up the following week during the Homecoming game against Crespi with a 24-21 win. The success continued with the win against Loyola, putting the Lancers in a tie for first place in the league with a 30-20 win. After the loss to Notre Dame, the Amat football team finished 3rd in the Serra League and continued to the first round of CIF. In the playoff opener, Amat lost a hard-hitting game against the eventual CIF-SS Division Champions Long Beach Poly.

Senior wide receiver Darren Andrews was named All-CIF and junior quarterback Koa Haynes was selected by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune as Offensive Player of the Year.

The Freshman Football Team proved to be a team of talented young men with an undefeated season. Congratulations freshman!!!

The success continued with student athletes of the Cross Country teams with The Lady Lancers again taking the Del Rey League Champion title. Congratulations went out to Emily Hubert for making All-League and All-CIF. Along with her, Vivian Arredondo, Pamela Tenorio, and Iesha Magallanes also made All-League.

Congratulations to Coach Richard Wiard ‘82 on his 500th win! In the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Coach Wiard makes a statement on this outstanding accomplishment: “It means I’ve been coaching a long time with very good players. I’ve had a lot of assistants through the years, my wife (Kathleen ‘73), my daughter (Kelly ‘97) and now my son (Scott ‘09), but you win with good players. We’ve probably had 20-25 college players. That’s how you win, with good players.”

For another year, the Winter sports were a force to be reckoned with because all teams made it to CIF playoffs. Girls’ basketball finished 4th in the Del Rey League and runner-up in CIF-Division I. The Lady Lancers also made it to the State Tournament Division I semi-finals. Special recognition went to Coach Richard Wiard on his 500th game win and for being named Coach of the Year by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the CIF-SS Division 1A. Congratulations Coach Wiard!!! The boys’ basketball team had a great season as well. They finished 4th in the Del Rey league and made it to CIF 2nd round.

Under the coaching of Tom Pierre and a team of alumni wrestlers, the team came out as the Mission League Champions. Four members of the team were league champions and ten members of the team were qualifiers for CIF-SS Division 4. The wrestling team lost in the semi-finals of the duals in Bloomington 56-12, but Jonathon Ornales, Billy Carmouche, and Tristan Ruiz went undefeated in the tournament.

In soccer, the Boys’ team placed 3rd in the Del Rey League and made it the CIF 1st round. For the Girls’ soccer team, incredible comebacks have been the theme of the team. After placing 2nd in the Del Rey League, the Lancers struggled in a double overtime 4-3 win against Diamond Bar High School during the CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinal match. All the hard work and effort from the girls paid off in a 4-2 victory over Pasadena Poly to become CIF Division III Champions for the second time in three seasons. Player of the Year went to Nayeli Requejo and for the second time, Ruben Gonzalez was named Coach of the Year by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the CIF-SS Division 3.

financial aidscholarship dollarsDear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Amat High School:

Keeping tuition affordable for those who want to be a part of the Amat Family has always been both a focus and a strength of our school. Due to the condition of the economy, many families are unable to send a child to Bishop Amat High School or are unable to have a child continue to attend the school. The primary reason for student withdrawal is the inability of the family to pay the tuition.

It is very important that Bishop Amat remain accessible and affordable to the families whom we serve. To that end, the school continues to pursue scholarship opportunities for our students. Monies raised through this year’s Annual Appeal will be directed to current and future students of families who want to attend but cannot afford the entire cost. Please consider making a donation to help a future Lancer obtain the same gift that you received.

To obtain information on establishing a Named Scholarship, please contact Ms. Deborah Oswald, Development Director at 626-962-2495, Ext. 7444.

Daylon McCutcheon ‘95 2013 Alumnus of the Year Award

Daylon attended Bishop Amat from 1992 to 1995. As a senior, he was named CIF Football Player of the Year. Daylon holds the school record for yards rushed in a single season (2,456). He attended USC and played defense for the Trojans. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns where he played until he retired in 2007. Over the years Daylon has been generous to his Alma Mater. Since retiring from his career in pro football, he has given his time and talent to coaching defense at Bishop Amat. In 2008 he continued his generosity by establishing the Daylon McCutcheon Scholarship Fund with a pledge of $100,000.00. Daylon is married to Shawna who is also an Amat alum. The McCutcheons have three children; Dyson (10), Shyanne (3), and Maliyah (3).

Susan O’Connor Byrne ‘73 2013 Alumnus of the Year Award

Susan was the second of five siblings to attend Bishop Amat High School, graduating in 1973. While at Amat she was active in clubs and activities including twirling short flags with the 200 strong Lancerette Drill Team. She has fond memories of being a member of the first graduating class to experience school-wide co-ed classes. In 2003 Susan returned to Bishop Amat in the role of parent to her then incoming freshman son Robert. Susan and her husband Bob immediately became involved in the life of the school by sponsoring speakers for school assemblies, initiating the “Play Like a Champion” Program at Amat, and bringing University of Notre Dame Hesburgh guest lecturers to our campus. They are generous donors in the areas of scholarship assistance, fund raising events, and support of our educational programs. Daughter, Kati, is currently attending Amat.

Bishop Amat High School held its 24th Annual Lancer Classic Awards and Dinner on April 12, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency L.A. Hotel Downtown. The Lancer Classic honors individuals for their outstanding contributions to society and who have unselfishly given of their time and talents to both supporting and promoting the school’s mission statement. This year’s honorees included co-recipients George and Maria Isho, long-time supporters of Catholic education and parish ministries,

for the Monsignor Thomas A. Kiefer Award and alumni co-recipients Susan Byrne ’73 and Daylon McCutcheon ’95 for the 2013 Alumnus of the Year Award.

George and Maria Isho2013 Monsignor Thomas A. Kiefer Humanitarian Award

George and Maria Isho’s commitment to community service, both as individuals and business leaders made them eminently worthy of receiving the Kiefer Award. The Isho’s relationship with Bishop Amat began in 2005 when they enrolled their oldest son Andrew as a freshman student. They are major donors to the capital campaign to build the new Student Activity Center and Maria is extensively involved in making the school’s major fund raising events a success. Outside of Bishop Amat, the Isho’s are involved in St. Martha’s School, St. George Chaldean Catholic Parish, Father Kolbe Misssionaries of the Immaculata, the Assyrian Medical Society and the Trinitarians.

2013 Lancer Classic Honorees Daylon and Friends

Page 13: TraditionAmat THE - Bishop Amat

In addition to cash gifts, many generous individuals and businesses contribute goods or “in-kind gifts” to Bishop Amat during the year. Many of these gifts are made in support of our Annual Extravaganza, Lancer Classic, and Golf Tournament. Contributions such as computer hardware, library books, and printing support are other ways to assist the school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and businesses who have contributed to Bishop Amat during the 2012-2013 school year.
