A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE FAIR TRADE ASSOCIATION

Dear Readers,

We are delighted to present the 2012 edition of the Fair Trade Shopping Guide.

In this edition you will find listings of businesses that supply fair trade crafts, clothing and giftware, as well as Fairtrade Certified products such as coffee, tea, chocolate and sports balls. For those of you who would like to participate in the fair trade movement, we have included listings of local Fair Trade Network Groups and accredited Fair Trade City Councils and Fair Trade Universities.

Fair trade is about fair terms of trade for farmers, artisans and workers in the developing world, supporting better prices, decent working conditions and local sustainability. By requiring traders to pay sustainable prices and offer fairer terms of trade, fair trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position, have more control over their lives and more economic self-sufficiency.

By putting just one more fair trade product in your shopping basket you have more than doubled the demand. This small act is assisting vulnerable producers to lift themselves out of poverty. Every friend you tell who joins you in purchasing a fair trade product makes a difference. Please use this guide and support the products and businesses who are dedicated to fair trade. There is a growing range of products and people who are helping us make trade work better for everyone – every purchase choice matters.

Sincerely,

Cheryl KernotChair – Executive CommitteeFair Trade Association of Australia & New Zealand

4. THE FAIR TRADE GUIDE 2012/13

ABOUT THE GUIDE

Every fair trade purchase makes a difference to farmers, workers, artisans, their families and communities. This Guide will help you find unique products while bringing the benefits of fair trade back to the producers.

Each entry in the Guide includes a web address for you to find more information about the supplier. Some suppliers wholesale their products, others retail, while some do both. You will find some have a shopfront, others operate online. But they all stock a significant proportion of fair trade products.

There are businesses listed in this guide that sell products which are Fairtrade Certified™ such as tea, coffee and chocolate which have the Fairtrade Label on their packaging. You can be sure that they meet internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards.

There are other businesses listed that sell fair trade crafts which they source from members of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), the international body which accredits members against a set of ten International Principles for Fair Trade. There is no fair trade label for the multitude of craft products but businesses that are WFTO or FToA help you know their products are fairly traded. FTAANZ works closely with the WFTO to ensure that businesses with fair trade at the core of their work comply with International Fair Trade Standards. Fair Trade Organisations (FTOs) can be recognized by looking for the WFTO logo and/or the Fair Traders of Australia logo (FToA) (see page 5). Fair Traders of Australia listings are identified with the FToA logo. Other businesses listed which source crafts, clothing or giftware from producer co-operatives or non-profit organisations which support disadvantaged producers or indigenous Australian artisans through fair trade, but have no formal accreditation, will be able to tell you more about their work - you may wish to ask them what they do that makes them fair trade.

Disclaimer

While we have sought to include only businesses which stock fair trade products or operate according to fair trade principles, no guarantee or endorsement is given of any listed business in regard to their fair trade operations other than Fairtrade Certified products which carry the Fairtrade Label, FToA endorsed businesses, or WFTO member organisations.

ABOUT FAIR TRADE

Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ)FTAANZ is a member driven not-for-profit organisation. FTAANZ aims to increase awareness, understanding and support for fair trade; support the development of a strong and sustainable fair trade movement; and link producers in South East Asia and the Pacific with fair trade markets.

FTAANZ activities include Fair Trade Fortnight, a national celebration of fair trade held in May each year; Fair Trade Communities which recognises organisations participating in the fair trade movement; and Fair Traders of Australia, a national network of endorsed Fair Traders.

To find out how to join FTAANZ, go to the Get Involved page on our website at www.fta.org.au or www.facebook.com/fairtrademovement

FTAANZ endorses the following systems of Fair Trade:

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) is a global representative body of over 350 producers and traders committed to 100% Fair Trade. Products from WFTO accredited Fair Trade Organisation (FTO) members are produced according to International Fair Trade Principles. Accredited FTOs display this

organisational mark as there is no product specific certification label for all craft and food products. www.wfto.com.

A new FTAANZ initiative is Fair Traders of Australia (FToA), an Australian network of endorsed small-scale traders of Fair Trade crafts and other products. FToA endorsed businesses sell a variety of fairly traded products, including crafts, clothing and giftware from WFTO members and small producers who demonstrate compliance to fair trade principles, as well as

Fairtrade Certified™ products. www.fairtraders.org.au.

The Fairtrade Label is a product certification label. A business can use the Fairtrade Label on products which have been certified as meeting international Fairtrade standards set by the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO). In Australia, common Fairtrade Certified™ products include coffee, tea, chocolate, cotton, and sports balls, with rice, quinoa, and sugar also available. www.fairtrade.com.au

BETTER WORLD ARTSwww.betterworldarts.com.au

BETTER WORLD ARTS is an innovative SOCIAL ENTERPRISE creating homewares, artworks, personal accessories and gifts. Each carefully handcrafted item reflects the traditions of generations of artisans. Combining designs from the ancient Aboriginal cultures with the skills of artisans in traditional

communities Better World Arts’ collaboration enables people to live and work in their own rural communities rather than being forced to chase work in big cities.

We work with handicrafts rather than finding cheaper machine made alternatives. We believe this keeps culture and economy strong. Additional to our Fair Trade practices we work with the Anangu community (people from Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands). Our direct financial and business support has enabled the development of Ngura Wiru Winkiku Indigenous Corporation, a badly needed advocacy body, community center and place of positive programs and opportunities for people amongst the most disadvantaged in Australia, and at the same time the most ancient living culture on earth. Better World Arts has identified and actively pursued 7 income streams for Anangu in Adelaide which involve the community in the economic and social fabric of the mainstream community and has initiated and funded social programs which provide frontline services. Better World Arts is committed to promoting reconciliation as the responsibility of all Australians. Wholesale or retail enquiries to [email protected]
