Special edition. Hello, I am Bill Buntin and Let’s Talk Sports in the Country Trader and on line. So many write-ups, TV shows, general conversations about race relation-ships. Well, in sports it seemed natural to me to get the best players no mat-ter to race. After high school and college I had played against only one non white player, Austin Peay. Then I was drafted and quickly put on a team in Georgia where we had African Americans and played against them. In the first of February I was sent overseas. Within two days an African American Sargent came and we took the team bus to the closest gym. We had five-black players and a black coach. Great team, super players, and never a mention of black or white....only can you play?!!! In those days I could. We had a great team finishing second in the country. Fast forward to the next season...many new players...same mix of black and white on our team... and we were good. Lots of wins, never an issue of race. Fast forward to years later as softball became big here in the states. Starting back it was almost black teams and white teams...good players on all teams. As I be-came friends with many of the players in the league, we decided to put together a traveling team to play the best, so if you could play, black or white, we were together winning state titles many tourneys. Same thing in basketball...race was not an issue. To finishing this column on a sad note with the black and white issues. One of my best friends ever was shot and killed. A black man. I was the only white man to be a pallbearer. It hurt to lose such a friend and it was nice that I was asked to be in the official burial party. I have worked at a school with a mostly black student body. So many other stories of how all races can be friends, work together, be in social and student groups together. So, I have no idea how many will see this but for the sake of God, live on this planet and forget the race talk. Think it over. We only get one chance. All people can be together. Work, live, love each other. I have been there. I Know!!!
