• Tracks movements of goods across borders

• Cost effective data collection

• Comprehensive data source

• Consistent data source internationally

Customs Data Sources – The Bad

• Customs frameworks do not promote Trade Statistics requirementsCustoms primary focus is collecting duty and safeguarding the

movement of restricted or dangerous goods

• The Customs declaration is a small part of a complex supply chain

Paperwork can be inaccurate - is the person making the declaration the one with the best knowledge of the goods?

• More identifiers are needed for analysis to reflect Globalisation (e.g. Intra-firm, Processing & Repair)
