Tracks of the WorldIt is four instrumentalists anchored in modernity, exiled in an ancestral vocal repertory from the ethnomusicological disc «Voices of the world».

A funeral song with child-like consonances,Fernand Bordage leading his oxen with incredilble calls to the plowing in a swamp of Vendée,Two Inuit women playing a « kattajjaq » throat-singing, punctuated with laughter,Lola Kiepja, the last Selk’nam shaman of the Terra del Fuego, who sows her rock-lit litanies.

These musics are a path in the imagination and the musical force created by humans as they evolve. It is a dance with the past to illuminate the present and to join what does not belong to the fleeting time, but to existence. It is a working process based on orality, by the imitation of a model towards its translation and its integration into a personal aesthetic.

On stage this becomes a suite of pieces from our selection within the original disc. Listening to the source songs is offered to the public in varied ways: sometimes before our version, sometimes during, by superposition and increase from the musicians. Explanations are given to the public in order to allow them to link our proposal to the context of original music, often full of imagination and poetry.

The record «Les Voix du Monde» was published by «Le Chant du Monde» in 1996 and presented to the listener a series of musical recordings made by many ethno-musicologists between 1924 and 1995, directed by Hugo Zemp, Bernard Lortat -Jacob, Gilles Léothaud. To listen > http://bit.ly/2nOXaz1

The method

This project progresses like this: selecting pieces from the original disc, the most faithful instrumental translation of the chosen material, then shifting towards a personal interpretation. The method of work is mainly oral, based on intensive listening, imitation, repetition, then transformation experienced while playing this music freely.

A particular technic applies for the imitation of vocal textures with instruments. Sometimes, in order to get closer to an irregular, complex vocal sound, the muscians use objects on their instruments: clothespins, scraps, bits of wood or metal, chopsticks, sponges. They prepare instruments the way John Cage prepared pianos in order to create unusual instrumental sounds. In other cases, the physical relationship between the changes, for example by placing the trumpet horn straight in the saxophone’s to create acoustic pertubations.

The work of transformation and shaping of the songs to the final version, is mainly resulting from the practice of the material with the tool of improvisation.

«When i discovered this record it was like an earthquake and a great breath of openness similar to my first listening of contemporary creation and the discovery of improvised music. These musics have a very intense aesthetic coherence, charged, shaped, inhabited by so many successive men and women, in contexts totally integrated with social life, that my current tendency to a systematic tabula rasa seemed futile, arrogant and displaced. At the same time, a sensation of absolute modernity emerges from those recordings. The arrangement of the timbres, the complexity and the rhythmic and harmonic fluidity, the density of the musical discourse, in a music essentially created within the oral tradition, confronted me with the question of this concept of modernity and the role of writing in the creation. These are questions that remain open, and to experience them, I wanted to practice these musics playing with other musicians. In order to let our bodies vibrate in these musical costumes carved for other voices, to renew and connect us. « Matthieu Prual

The musicThe musical orientations that arise from the choice of this repertory are multiple, inspired by the world musics, playing tribal sounds, improvising on the model of jazz.

No Tongues borrows their popular dimension from the music of the oral tradition.

As they join in the game of translating with instruments, the musicians share the lightness or the power which, according to the source songs and the original context, makes the strength and the beauty of the covered musics.

As a blink from past to present, this creation makes available little-known works by updating them with codes of today’s productions, but it also enables the public to be confronted with a demanding aesthetic, serving a federating and humanizing message.

The work of simplification and the opening of the imaginary of the listeners also passes by the contextualization of the music to the public, giving explanations during the show.

On stage, No Tongues conforms to the tradition of oral music, destined to be shared between generations through education and dialogue.

The physical involvement of the musicians, the use of surprising accessories on the instruments (clothespins, bird call, knitting needles ...), reinforced by the work of light creation and the presence of tribal masks, opens the concert to a rich visual dimension.

Full of sounds and instrumental surprises, the show is above all a communicating work addressed to any kind of audiences, a seductive and sincere musical experience.

Pedagogic actionsEvents in schools, colleges, high schools, universities

The project « Tracks of the World » abounds with several ways of meeting unwarned listeners.

The ethnomusicologic angle; the instrumental approach, singular by the commitment of the body and the use of everyday objects for prepared instruments; the relationship between ageless music from the peoples of the world and a creative approach rooted in its time.

By the variety of those gates, we can guide the public in our artistic proposition through interactive and playful sessions together.

Specific instrumental actionsMusicians of « No Tongues » propose thematic workshops for non-professional musicians and

singers, children and adults, right from the very first year of practice.
