Society Notice Board

Editor’s Comments: To help with assessing what articles might appeal it is high time we had an age profile of the membership....I’d like to think we are not all wrinklies !! To that end we are including date of birth on all new renewal forms from this month, so please fill in when you return. The sooner we have this info the better so if those with emails can kindly just send an email to [email protected] it would much appreciated. Obviously you will only have to provide this info once. Application forms have also been amended.

With another packed issue no room to waffle except to say I will see some of you at Crewe on the 13th. 40th Anniversary Events: Eastleigh Works, 7th September 2013: Our finale event to celebrate our 40th Anniversary will be held at Eastleigh Works on the afternoon of Saturday 7th September 2013.

This will be a Members only event and will give you the chance to visit one of the busiest railway locations in the country. Exact details are still being discussed but we are planning to offer access to 99% of the site with some additional activities so watch out for further announcements in Tracks.

The event will be free of charge to all Members but numbers will be limited so please email or write to Carl Watson to reserve your place as soon as possible. There has been a lot of interest with over 50 members wishing to attend but there are still places available. You will need to make your own travel arrangements to the event. No parking will be allowed on site.

Our Sales Stand will be present where we will be releasing the long awaited Ultimate Sighting File (USF). Membership Matters: Subscriptions: Annual - £16.00, Five year - £75.00 (saving £5.00 & hedging against future rises) ICRS Membership gives you: • a high quality full colour 40 page monthly magazine Tracks - covering all aspects of railways. • an informative website, with access to previous editions of the magazine. • up to 27% discount on all ICRS publications (5 currently available). • 10% discount on lan Allan books (direct sales from IA only).

New Members: (* re-joined) Malcolm Clements (Derby), Stuart Duncan (Runcorn), Howard Milne (Norwich), Graham Plumpton (Worcester), Angus Stewart (St. Andrews), Len Turner (Gloucester), Simon Wildman (Derby) - a warm welcome to you all.

Obituaries: Sadly we have lost two members recently, Alan Kent from Cheltenham and David Westacott from Newark. Our sincere condolences go to their families.

Membership Renewal: When your membership is due for renewal this will be indicated on the Tracks address carrier sheet with your expiry date. The reverse of the carrier sheet will be printed with a Renewal / Reminder form, which can be returned or not depending on the method of payment (see below). If no renewal is forthcoming after a second Final Reminder, your membership will be deemed to have lapsed.

Methods of Payment: Internet Banking (BACS) / Standing Order: This is the preferred most cost effective, secure and quickest way of paying, for you and the Society and ensures we get the full amount. Please remit your sub to a/c: 22032668 sort code: 309947 (Lloyds TSB, 128-132 York Road, Hartlepool TS26 9DD). Please use your name and membership number as a reference. Eastleigh Works Report by Carl Watson

General: A busy month for disposals on site by Raxstar with ‘C’ Stock, 508s and a coach all consigned to history. The 508/3 subclass is now extinct. The Turkish built Class 70 70099 was rumoured to be coming to us but in the end went to LNWR at the depot across the road, being hauled there on the 7th by 70017.

Locos: 47841 and 57002 have received a fresh coat of DRS Compass livery, with both receiving a second flush cab front and roof louvre modifications (see photos below and opposite top).

Infrastructure News Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Footbridge, Tonbridge West Yard: The 150 yard long footbridge spanning Tonbridge West Yard is a well known longstanding vantage point for observing and photographing stock in the yard just to the west of Tonbridge station. It also spans the Redhill line and four track Jubilee EMU sidings as seen in the foreground of the upper two photos. During August / September 2012, Network Rail replaced and refurbished the footbridge over a three week period. The metal footbridge is carried on 10 brick piers between two sets of brick steps, one pier between the Redhill lines and Jubilee sidings, one pier between Jubilee sidings and West Yard and another 8 between the 12 through tracks in the yard. It originally consisted of three similar designs, one over the Redhill line / Jubilee sidings (as can be seen in the lower left photo), one over the next 5 spans and another over the last 3 spans. The replacement footbridge is all of the same construction in modular sections but due to the three different span widths has slightly different designs (see photo at end). The footbridge connects Douglas Road to the south and Clare Avenue, via an unmade track, which is the yard access, to the north. The route is a public footpath. Parking is difficult at the southern end due to the proximity to a school (southern end) which means parking restrictions protect the residential estate. Parking is ok at the northern end but only near the bridge on the access track which widens out at the fenced entrance to the yard. Road access both ways is through residential estates and therefore is narrow with speed measures ! The following before and after photos were taken on the 13th July 2012 and the 14th April 2013.

The one advantage of the original footbridge was its relatively low open mesh sides allowing visibility through and to photograph over...just. Fortunately the new footbridge retains that design although is slightly higher requiring tip toes to hold a camera !! Unfortunately as with all things railway the new solid panels in the spans towards the northern end have already attracted graffiti.

the new modular footbridge spans showing the one over the Redhill tracks (left) and the one over the Jubilee sidings, which is the longest hence the bracing, the spans nearest the northern

end of the footbridge have 5 sections as on the left above but one is solid not mesh seen on the access track from Clare Avenue, 29th July 2013

Hitchin Flyover: This single track viaduct was commissioned over the weekend of 22nd / 23rd June and driver training was reported as having commenced on the 25th June. Officially service trains will not start using the flyover until the December timetable change.

Preservation News Birmingham Moor Street: After spending 10 years ‘trapped’ in Birmingham Moor Street whilst the station has been re-developed around it, cosmetically restored 2-8-0 2885 was finally lifted out on the 2nd June 2013 and moved to Tyseley Museum. Due to stay for 5 years, here is 2885 on the 30th November 2006, just 3 years into its sojourn.

Great Central Railway Reunification: The most ambitious project in recent years, to re-unite the two halves of the Great Central Railway still running as preserved lines, is to become reality. The missing link between the southern section, run as the Great Central Railway (GCR) from Leicester North to Loughborough Central will connect with the GCR (North) (GCRN) run from Loughborough to Ruddington (Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre).

This is the scene behind and north of the existing loco works on the GCR at Loughborough Central with remains of the twin track formation crossing the still insitu canal bridge over the Grand Union Canal. Beyond the fence there is a missing gap of 500m north to the GCRN. The sign (left) is on the end fence

The project is a partnership with Network Rail who will erect a bridge over the four track Midland Mainline by 2015 in association with works they are carrying out. The rail bridge is in fact two sections donated for the project in 2011 after removal from Reading during the redevelopment work. Other works will require repair of the canal bridge (see above) a new road bridge over Railway Terrace Road and the replacement of an embankment. It is anticipated that the work under the banner of ‘Bridging the Gap’ will cost about £8 million and be finished by 2018 when the completed line will total 18 miles in length. Steam Coal: One of the issues resulting from the sudden demise of Daw Mill Colliery and Scottish Coal was the loss of quality steam locomotive coal for preserved lines. It temporarily led to cancellations of steam hauled services, particularly on the North Yorks Moors Railway and was threatening Vintage Trains mainline charters. Thankfully a short term solution has been found with a supply of suitable coal from Russia.

Advertisement – GB Bus Group (GBBG) Belonging to ICRS tells us you have an interest in vehicles involved in travel, whether it is to do with their design or simply number-crunching. That being the case, have you also got an interest in buses in the UK ? GBBG may already be known to you from its link with ICRS in the past, but if you haven’t thought about joining us before, why not reconsider? Our annual membership subscription has now been reduced to a modest £13.60, so why not visit our website www.gb-bg.co.uk or write to our Secretary, Hazel Roberts, at 37 Abbey Place, Crewe CW1 4JR for further information? It could well be of benefit to you as a fellow transport enthusiast.

Preservation Galas Swanage Diesel Gala, 11-12th May 2013 by Carl Watson: I was fortunate to receive tickets for this event through work, so the whole family took our tent and camped Friday and Saturday night alongside the line at Woodyhyde, just along from Harman’s Cross. This is a perfect location to view the trains and get some nice photos as well as experience the sound and feel of the big diesels as they passed by.

My son Jack was certainly well impressed with 37521 as it passed by late at night on the Saturday as the ground reverberated and he was in the part of the tent nearest the line! The weather was a changeable with lots of overnight rain and cold temperatures but, fortunately, during the day wasn’t too bad at all. Saturday was the best day as the rain came in Sunday lunchtime and seemed determined to stay.

The full line-up comprised: Resident: 08436, D3591 (08476), 33111 Visiting: 20142, 20189, 20227, 31466, 33108, 37521 ‘English China Clays’, 55019 Royal Highland Fusilier’, 4-VEP 3417 ‘Gordon Pettitt’ In addition, visiting D9009 (55009) ‘Alycidon’ was stabled at Corfe Castle for the weekend (see photo below).

Unfortunately, D4 ‘Great Gable’ wasn’t able to make it, but 20142 took its place. There was at least one occasion over the weekend where the three 20s were put at the head of one train and they looked quite superb. For me the two LU liveried 20s, 20189 in LT red and 20227 in modern LU red white and blue were the stars of the show. 20227 did appear, briefly on the Saturday, with the name ‘Ed Cluderay’ on one side only but this had disappeared by the Sunday... see photos in June issue, ed.

The two 08s took it in turns to operate brake van rides at Norden with 08436 doing so on Saturday (see photo right) whilst D3591 (see photo below taken on the Sat.) did the honours on Sunday. There was also a chance to get 08 haulage on Sunday at Swanage when 08436 did a shunt release. Most had already vacated the train but a lucky few got some gronk haulage.

There were very few obvious delays throughout the weekend with any that did occur quickly being made up, so that pretty much the timetable ran to plan. Organisation of the event was excellent as always and those responsible deserve a well earned pat on the back.

Tyseley Open Weekend, 22nd-23th June 2013 by Neil Dix: Over the weekend of June 22nd & 23rd, the railway museum at Tyseley held its annual 'Open Weekend'. Special guests this year included the narrow gauge Corris Railway steam locomotive No.3 ‘Sir Haydn’. Normally based on the Talyllyn Railway, Sir Haydn has been on tour in 2013 visiting a number of preserved railway events. Also visiting was LMS 46233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’.

I was at the event on the Saturday morning from 10.00 until lunchtime. Unfortunately the weather was poor with almost continuous drizzle. Despite this, Tyseley was very crowded especially around the turntable and the combination of rain and masses of people meant that photography was hard work.

‘Sir Haydn’ was actually located in the car park on the back of a low loader. Locomotives situated around the turntable included LMS 46233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’ and 5593 ‘Kolhapur’. The GWR was represented in the form of 5043 ‘Earl of Mount Edgcumbe’ (see photo left), 5029 ‘Nunney Castle’, 4965 ‘Rood Ashton Hall’, 4936 ‘Kinlet Hall’, 9600 plus 2885 recently moved from Birmingham Moor Street Station and partly assembled 4110.

The weekend also gave the chance to view the recently constructed workshop (see photo opposite top) erected between the original workshop and offices. In the workshops were various steam and diesel locomotives in varying stages of restoration. Among them were LMS 4-6-2 6201 ‘Princess Elizabeth’, 4-6-0 7029 ‘Clun Castle’, Replica Bloomer 670 and 47773 (see photo opposite bottom).

GWR 0-6-0PT 7752, painted in London Transport livery and carrying L94, was running up and down giving rides to those who wanted them from the platform. All in all it was a good little event, albeit let down a bit by the weather. I remember visiting Tyseley many times in the 1980's and in those days, much more of the site was open to the public including the Coal Stage from which an elevated view could be had of both the railway museum and the adjacent DMU depot. It would be nice if one day this was open to the public again for the Open Weekend as it would allow photographers a different vantage point from which to see what is undoubtedly an impressive set-up

Seen on the adjacent LMT DMU depot was this recently delivered Windhoff RW30/50 AEM shunter.

Freight Corner WAGON UPDATES by Trevor Roots: To allow members to keep their copy UK Wagons as up to date as possible, changes are provided via this spot every month. The 2013 edition has not only been updated but has been re-organised to be more user friendly and incorporate stored wagons where known. As this latter attempt is anything but exhaustive we rely on member sightings to help. Please let Trevor know, contact details on page 2, if you have any amendments or wish pass on any other helpful wagon information. Following the success of UK Wagons 2013 a further edition is being released and will include changes since the first book was published and all the typos and annoying minor errors previously reported in Tracks. The Port of Felixstowe has expanded with the opening of the new North Terminal on the 6th of June. With good weather helping, stabilisation of the Hatfield Colliery slip is has been achieved and with the trackbed uncovered, it seems a limited service will resume in late July. Plans are being prepared to move whiskey by rail from Elgin Yard in late July. I wondered why the stored OTA timber wagons had all suddenly been moved together...watch this space ! Timber traffic is to be trialled from the far north line using container flats....again watch this space.

Preservation Photo Spot Severn Valley Railway (SVR) by James Holloway: 0-6-2T 5643 has arrived at SVR for the season from Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway (LHR). In the photo below it is seen approaching Kidderminster Town on the 29th June 2013 with a service train, passing the diesel depot and running alongside Network Rail tracks.

Further to the news that shark brake van 993886 had entered preservation on the Great Central Railway, here is a photo of it at it new home

Railway Globetrotters A Week in Central Germany, 13-20th Oct 2012 by John Teasdale – Part 1: 13th October: With four friends I spent a week in October visiting various points between Calais and Berlin. Whilst waiting on the quayside for the delayed sailing of the Pride of Canterbury, some admired a bright yellow BMW Isetta bubble car perched on a trailer next to the Previa whilst the remainder amused themselves at the sight of irate loading staff trying to prevent a coach load of French travellers from ignoring the marked walkways and milling around haphazardly amongst the throng of offloading traffic. Great sport!

14th October: First call after a night in the Ibis Styles hotel in Calais was Antwerpen Nord. No queues on the motorway, it was a Sunday, but the weather was turning distinctly gloomy. Permission to look around was happily given and, fortunately, it did stay dry whilst we gathered the 130+ numbers on site including the preserved 201.010. Also present was a fire damaged 1326 (see photo above) and a badly bent 1308 !! (see photo below).

The rain began during the journey to Rotterdam but thankfully ceased as we began our walk around Waalhaven where a wide variety of haulage was on view. Amsterdam was next up with a trip from Sloderdijk station to Amersfoort. A prompt connection and a through train allowed plenty of time on the platforms at Amersfoort then it was over the border (just) to the excellent hotel in the old station building at Bad Bentheim. Not only comfortable but with a Bentheimer Eisenbahn “Warship” parked outside the back door!

15th October: Monday began with a call at the BE rail and bus workshop in Nordhorn where helpful staff gave us a tour. We were surprised to see a Swiss Railways tunnel fire-fighting unit present where it was apparently having some software upgrades and tests on various items. After a quick look in at Rheine, the next call was both levels of the Hbf at Osnabrück, followed by the NordWestBahn depot at Hafen where more of the NWB units were seen displaying the revised numbering first observed on our last German trip. We then were allowed a look around the main DB depot. Road works and diversions featured strongly on the drive to Hannover (as did a brief call into the museum at Stadthagen) where a guide was waiting for us at Seelze and a full tour given.

Cl.232 Co Co 232601, Seelze, 14th Oct 2012 Despite being a working day, 70 plus loks were on site. In contrast the DMU depot at Leinefelde was very quiet as was Lehrte. Nevertheless it was a happy party that checked into the hotel at Braunschweig and had some time on the platforms before darkness fell.

Stock Changes It is hoped that all major changes recorded below will help you keep the UK Combine, Pocket Book and Name Directory up to date, (numerous pool code changes will not be recorded). In order to compile as accurate and up to date list as possible, can members please pass on their observations, particularly name changes and multiple unit reformations to the editor, Trevor Roots. Misc News: The future of 1499 one of the two last 4-CIG EMUs used on the Lymington Branch, which was supposed to have been safely preserved on the Dean Forest Railway (DFR), is in serious doubt. Bouts of vandalism have seen all the windows smashed leading to the DFR offering it for sale, which might mean scrap.

ICRS Publications Following on from the new UK Combine Summer Edition, new editions of Irish Railways and UK Wagons Summer Edition are both out and available. The UK Pocket Book is selling well so if you haven’t bought one yet remember it is packed with more info and is the best laid out version yet.

The other exciting news is that after 4 years, Ultimate Sighting Files (USF) is to be released in September at the Eastleigh Works event as part of our 40th Anniversary celebrations. It will be in two parts (see below) as opposed to the former three parts. The price to non-members at £24.98 in total will be similar to before but now members will only pay £18.00.

Of our other smaller books, UK Name Directory will not be updated until 2014. Due to poor sales none of the individual books, UK Locomotives, Diesel Units and Electric Units will be produced in 2013.
