HORSEMAN'S CORNER

According to the House of de Carteret which dispenses Mans Best Friend, the soap is a gentle, natural formulation, cleansing and removing those dry, flaky patches from sensitive skin. And, before you ask, the soap is not be used on your kids – no matter how dirty they get.

The soap is made by the traditional method, combining natural oils instead of using chemically derived fatty acids and, as a result, the natural glycerine is retained: giving your horse’s skin a moisturising effect.

The blurb goes on to say that a mixture of lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree and essential oils are then incorporated which will not only have your horse smelling sweeter than the pot pourri in your bathroom, it will also repel biting insects … eg, flies, mozzies, ticks and the dreaded botfly.

Mans Best Friend – unlike most other soaps – contains no

FRIEND best

Clean, mean racing machines …

Soap. Although everyone uses it – except, of course, that bloke sitting next to you on the train – it’s not usually something we give a lot of thought to.And we probably think about it even less when it comes to that horse in yonder paddock.

AFTER ALL, IT’S been raining a lot lately and what better cleanser than a couple of

God’s showers?

Trouble is, while a decent downpour will remove a goodly portion of the grime (until they decide to take a good roll in the muddiest part of the yard), it won’t take away the itch and skin irritations that cause your neddy to gnaw away at the affected areas and, more often than not, rub his or her A Grass against the fence.

However, Mans Best Friend (or should we say your horse’s best friend) is at hand …. Medicated Soap.

First of all, it will give your horse a noticeably healthier, shinier coat and, let’s face it, we all look a lot better ourselves when we throw on a bag of fruit or a decent frock.

artificial brighteners, hardeners, lathering agents, phosphates, animal fats or tallow and is chemically free. What’s more, the pH is close to that of the skin to prevent allergic reactions.

Bottom line, it will have your horse smelling clean and fresh, will repel those nasty insects and have him or her looking a million bucks.

Hey, maybe you should give some to the bloke sitting next to you on the train after all!

So, what did you think of the 2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival?

Aside from the rain (something different?) and complaints from the stay-at-homes about the free-to-air TV coverage (justified), the carnival again provided plenty of theatre.

Americain, Brazilian Pulse, Wall Street, Lion Tamer, Star Witness, Sacred Choice all played starring roles, but it really boiled down to two: So You Think and Black Caviar.

And between them, they showed that a week is a long time in racing. When So You Think won the Mackinnon, there has probably been no hotter horse in the country. Less than a week later he was sold, leaving many of us with an empty feeling.

ON TRACK

But then Black Caviar comes out and blows them away in the Patinack – the performance of THE carnival – giving us a new pin up … one that’s not leaving these shores any time soon.

And she’s a genuine star, not a consolation prize to make up for So You Think’s departure.

So what did we think of the 2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival? We want to buy a horse and pay for our own caviar!

At least you’ll have plenty of opportunity with the 2011 yearling sales just around the corner.

Have a wonderful Christmas and see you on the Gold Coast in January.

Q & A

Preparations for the next round of yearling sales are now in full swing and Track To Track asked Australia’s two major auction companies – Inglis (Mark Webster) and Magic Millions (Stephen Silk) – their opinions on how our sales would fare in 2011.

T2T: WHAT MAJOR measures have been undertaken since the completion of 2010 auctions to

ensure the success of next year’s round of sales?

: The team at Inglis has concentrated strongly on conformation

selections and placing our client’s yearlings in the best sale to suit each horse.

2011 SALES

: The agreement with Queensland Events Corporation has given

surety to our commitment to our Gold Coast Complex. People will start to see improvements to the complex, but this will take a number of years.

T2T: Foal numbers increased last year … has this had a bearing on the number of entries for 2011 sales?

: All 2011 Inglis Select Yearling Sales have increased by 5-10%

on numbers entered. We will be offering 80 more horses at next year’s Sydney Classic Yearling Sale than we did in 2010, however this is also due to the quality of yearlings having risen substantially for this sale.

: We received approximately the same number of

nominations as we normally would for the January Sale. However, in some of our other yearling sales, numbers have increased across the board.

T2T: Do you have any ‘banner’ entries confirmed at this stage?

: We are thrilled to be offering the half siblings to Makybe

Diva, Star Witness and Black Caviar as well as full siblings to Group One winners Samantha Miss, Racing to Win, Wanted and Mnemosyne. Next year’s Easter catalogue will also STAR WITNESS

include the progeny of star mares Aqua d’Amore, Special Harmony, Private Steer and Gee I Jane to name just a few of the exciting lineup in 2011.

: We have a full brother to Stratum, a half brother to More Joyous, a half brother to Starspangledbanner, a half sister to Shoot Out,

the first foal of Miss Andretti, the first foal of Mirror Mirror, to give you some idea of the quality on offer.

T2T: Are there any ‘movers’ among the stallion ranks which you feel will make a greater presence with their progeny in 2011?

: Shamardal has gone to the next step as a stallion and we are very fortunate to be offering a number of his progeny at our 2011

Select Yearling Sales. We will also be offering seven yearlings by High Chaparral at the Easter Yearling Sale that will be highly sought after following his progeny’s outstanding success on the track this year. >>

Overall, the stallion ranks are very strong with a wide cross section of proven stallions in the marketplace to assist yearling buyers.

: I believe that Choisir will be a big mover at the sales in 2011, particularly in light of his recent deeds with international

Group One winner Starspangledbanner and Melbourne Spring Carnival Group One winner Sacred Choice. Mossman is another stallion

that in recent months has been getting a wriggle on p r o d u c i n g stakes winner of the caliber of Buffering, Neeson, Love C o n q u e r s All, and the David Hayes’ trained 2YO

in Dinner Date. I’m sure both of these stallions will generate greater interest from the buying bench at the 2011 Yearling Sales.

T2T: Sales inspections would be close to completion … among the first season sires, are there one or two that really stand out?

: Haradasun and Bernardini have produced consistent crops of attractive yearlings. Bernadini has

made a great start in the northern hemisphere with Group / Grade One winners on both dirt and turf so he is sure to be popular. We have also been impressed by the Dylan Thomas yearlings … there is a lot of Danehill about them: strong and well boned, which should suit Australian conditions.

: I’ve been particularly impressed with the progeny of Court Commands, who stands here in Queensland. He

has thrown nice athletic, racy types which I

believe the buying public will take to. Another first season sire I’m impressed with is Zizou. He is from the family of Snippets, the original Magic Millions winner and a successful sire in his own right. Zizou has been mated with some very nice mare and I’m sure they will make a big impact at the 2011 Yearling Sales.

T2T: With the Australian dollar going so well, do you feel it will have an impact on international investment at next year’s sales?

: It has to play a significant part, but in saying that we had a record number of sales to Asia in terms

of lots sold last year but their spend was slightly less.

: It will have some impact. International buyers know the quality of the Australian product. They will still come

to the sale looking for that quality product within their budget.

T2T: You now have buyers from all over the world participating at your sales. Where do you see the emerging markets?

: China is the market we all have a close watch on.

: Our key emerging markets continue to be Singapore and Hong Kong, with opportunities coming out of Malaysia,

Macau and Korea.

T2T: What percentage of horses are sold overseas and is it a figure you anticipate will increase or decrease in the coming year?

: At the 2010 Easter Yearling Sale 33% of sold lots were purchased by buyers from overseas. With the appointment of

Peter Twomey as Inglis’ Asia Representative, we have made a commitment to grow and service the Singapore, Hong Kong and China regions in particular. We expect to grow our overseas buying bench across all our sales, not just the Easter Yearling Sale.

: The figure is approximately 20%: we do not expect that to increase.

T2T: Gut feeling or otherwise, are you prepared to predict whether next year’s sales will be up, down or remain steady?

: Remain steady. It is still very much a buyer’s market.

: Given the impact of the dollar, I think this will make local buyers

more competitive. I would hope this means the clearance rate might improve with an increase in the gross, but I would expect the average to be steady or slightly down.

GALLANT GREY WAS TOP NOTCH

EVERYONE LOVES AN HONEST performer. You know the type … gutsy, hoof and all gallopers that put in 100% every time they race.

Top Marc certainly fit the mould. The son of Canadian Silver won 12 races in Queensland – the majority in the city – and stamped his career with victories in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap and was also runnerup in the Doomben Stakes-LR and Goldmarket-LR at the Gold Coast.

Those he left in his wake included Group One winners Clangalang and Star of Florida and by the time they hung up his reins, Top Marc had won over $400,000 for connections.

Amazingly, he won from two years to seven years and from 1000m to 1800m and not surprisingly, found a home at one of Queensland’s leading thoroughbred studs – Racetree – standing four seasons at the Innisplain showpiece.

Sadly, Top Marc died on 9 November, much to the distress of his trainer Kelly Schweida and Racetree’s managing director Kevin Dixon.

“He (Top Marc) was a tough old bugger,” Kelly recalled. “More than handy and the sweetest natured entire I’ve seen. Great temperament and big heart.”

Kevin was reading from the same book: “One minute he was here and the next minute gone. We believe it was a heart aneurism and he went very quickly.

“It was a sad day at Ractree.”

AIRFLOW'S LOUIS LINTNER

HORSEMAN’S CORNER

www.tracktotrack.com22

Yearling buyers can be a fussy bunch. Some will forgive a horse being turned in, but tell you to forget if it’s turned out. Over at the knee? That’s OK, but back at the knee … no way. Cow hocked yay, long in the pastern nay.

THING IS, HORSES HAVE proven over and over again that c o n f o r m a t i o n a l problems can be

overcome – even in extreme cases – but the one fault that prospective purchasers will never, ever make allowances for is ‘wind’.

We’ve all heard the horror stories about yearlings failing the scope: often with hundreds of thousands going down the proverbial gurgler.

The premise is simple … NO AIR, NO ATHLETE! No ifs or buts when it comes to respiratory matters, ladies and gents.

That said, Louis Lintner of Airflow+Speed Bloodstock Services will tell you there is a quantum leap between selecting a yearling which has attained a scoping ‘pass’ and buying a yearling which will go to the top of the class.

Whereas most of us take for the granted the air that we breathe, Louis has made it his life’s study. He could wax lyrical for hours about matters such as RLN (Recurrent Laryngeal

Neuropathy) – fill bookshelves on the subject – and, indeed, there are comprehensive studies covering all matters pertaining to airflow on his website: www.airflowonbloodstock.com

But there is one thing that Louis finds difficult to comprehend … he’s perplexed as to why buyers don’t pay more – much, much more – attention to ‘air intake’.

“There are two main factors which determine speed in a racehorse,” Louis stresses. “Stride rate and stride length. A horse, being a “hyperventilator”, breathes in time with its legs, therefore the horse strides in accordance with its breathing capacity.”

And this is where it gets interesting …

“Some well developed horses can have an air intake capacity which can be twice that of others. In

terms of the physics of airflow, that means a tube which is twice the diameter of another tube is not twice, but 16 times as efficient in allowing the air to flow!”

Louis – with justifiable pride – points out that the expertise (quite literally at his fingertips) has only come about through years of toil and study.

“To our knowledge, Airflow+ Speed’s information pool of Upper Airway palpation is the biggest ever performed in recorded history!

“Over the past five years we graded over 12,500 … weanlings and yearlings through to racehorses and broodmares (thereof 11000 over the last 2 years).

AIRFLOW

HORSEMAN’S CORNER

“Such high numbers provide us with an invaluable insight: naturally our accuracy has improved dramatically over time as highly important aspects have evolved through our examination process.

“We feel a huge responsibility to the buyer – and to the industry at large – to help them make such crucial decisions.

“Airflow+Speed is currently the only totally independent information source available providing buyers with specific, performance-related information on every horse prior to all major sales in the southern hemisphere.

“By the time you get to the sale, what you see – and more importantly what you find – is pretty much what you get.

“What we do is stretch your knowledge beyond the obvious, traditional approach of the selection process and airflow is a top priority issue at this point in time.

“You don’t need millions of dollars to find a champion, but you need your ‘selection’ priorities right.

“After all, even if you are in the position to spend millions you still want to invest them on the right product!

“We allow our clients to step outside of the box, providing them with the opportunity to purchase a top p e r f o r m a n c e prospect for, often times,

considerably less money.

“How so? Well, given that our assessments are dedicated entirely to airflow, it releases the buyer from the highly competitive stress associated with hunting pedigree dominated selections.

“Whether you are a direct buyer, agent, consultant, or forming a syndicate – you carry a big responsibility: can you really afford to ignore such important information which will have a direct bearing on your future athlete’s performance?

“I am confident that future champions can be found in the upper areas of our grading levels.

“Our system reflects very detailed statistical information on the various graded levels, structured by earnings, total wins and wins over all distances on over 4,000 graded horses currently racing. The results have been beyond our expectations, which is highly satisfying for us and particularly for our clients.

“Having such high numbers of

research has also provided us with some invaluable insight in relation to variations in readings by regions, countries, environments and other influences.”

Louis also claims that certain sires have a propensity for producing types with superior airflow and, as a consequence, pays a lot of attention to a sire’s first crop.

“High Chaparral’s progeny really stood out in our grading system when they first appeared at sales. So too did Lonhro and his progeny. Naturally, our clients were able to buy some top performing horses for very good prices at the time.

“Champion athletes come in all shapes and sizes … and conformation faults! But the one thing they have all in common is top working upper airways.”

The 2011 yearling sales are just around the corner, but don’t hold your breath … give Louis a call on 0415 239 660 and give yourself an edge.

WALL STREET

25www.tracktotrack.com 25www.tracktotrack.com

One of the most oft-quotes lines in movie history comes from the 1987 flick, Wall Street … “greed is good”.Well, “speed is good” too and the aptly named Wall Street is well on his way to building a huge treasure chest for owners following his victory in the 2010 Emirates Stakes at Flemington.

IN A MELBOURNE CUP carnival more renowned for its ‘command performances’, the Emirates Stakes provided arguably the most exciting

finish with the first four horses across the line all finishing within a neck of each other.

Fortunately for Kiwi trainer Jeff Lynds and connections, Wall Street had the longest neck and was given the nod by the barest of margins in Melbourne’s final Group One for the calendar year.

Although having won previously by racing on the pace, Wall Street donned blinkers and a tongue tie for the Emirates and settled near the tail of the field, flying home the last furlong in double quick time to grab his rivals on the wire.

It was a superb ride Hugh Bowman who was clearly the inform jockey throughout the week with a rousing 6.5 length

victory on Lion Tamer in the Victoria Derby-G1.

But as good as Lion Tamer was, Wall Street has now clearly established himself as New Zealand’s premier racehorse … well, No. 1 NZ trained at least!

Snapped up at the 2006 New Zealand National Yearling Sale for $100,000 by leading bloodstock agent Paul Moroney, Wall Street is a son of the Sadler’s Wells stallion Montjeu from the Grand Lodge mare Villa Wanda.

Is there anything ‘hotter’ than Sadler’s Wells in this neck of the woods at the moment? It’s probably fair to say that up until 18 months or so ago, Sadler’s Wells stallions hadn’t exactly covered themselves in glory south of the equator, but with High Chaparral’s arrival on the scene, there’s been a serious disruption in the force.

Monaco Consul won last year’s Victoria Derby, Shoot Out this

year’s AJC Derby, Descarado the 2010 Caulfield Cup and then, of course, there is So You Think … enough said.

Montjeu has risen to anywhere near those heights after shuttling to New Zealand for several seasons, but his 82 stakes winners world wide – 19 of them at Group One level – do include Nom du Jeu and Roman Emperor (both of whom won AJC Derbies and ran second in the Caulfield Cup a year apart), Avondale Cup winner Sharvasti, Tavistock and Speed Gifted.

The Montjeu x Grand Lodge cross is working quite well with Irish-bred Joshua Tree taking out the Pattison Canadian International, Canada’s richest race, in October.

Wall Street’s mum, Villa Wanda, didn’t exactly set the world alight in her two starts in Britain, but she’s starting to make up for it at stud with her other progeny including >>

Page 26: Track To Track Issue 66

Australian winners Usage and Wahaha.

The family also throws up a bit of black type through Wall Street’s stakes winning granddam Gisarne, a close relation to several European black type performers and, interestingly, a half sister to the dam of 5-time stakes winner Coalesce and 1998 Emirates Stakes winner Bezeal Bay.

Briefly with the stable of Mike Moroney, Wall Street made his debut – under the guidance of Lynds – on 13 November 2008 in an Otaki Maiden.

It was hardly an auspicious start, running fifth. Although Wall Street only finished a length or so off the pace, it’s hard to image that Lynds was thinking he would be accepting trophies at Flemington with the horse a week short of two years later.

Wall Street again ran fifth at his next start – on Boxing Day – and was tipped out until the following April.

But by that time, the wheel had turned and Wall Street

26 www.tracktotrack.com

came back greedy for victory, peeling off six wins from seven starts in the calendar year – his only defeat a lip second – and signing off with a victory in the Group Two Churchill Stakes

at Riccarton: his first tilt at stakes level.

Wall Street hasn’t mixed with anything but the elite ever since, albeit giving something a see saw ride for owners with a ninth in the Trentham-G1, followed by his first Group One victory in the Thorndon Mile, followed by a ninth in the Fairndale-G1, a win in the Thompson-G3 and an 11th in the Doncaster-G1 in his first trip across the Tasman.

Sidelined in preparation for the spring, Wall Street was beaten a nostril in the Mudgway-G1 on resumption, but then peeled off consecutive victories in the Windsor Park-G1 and Spring

Classic-G1 to well and truly firm up his booking for Melbourne.

Yet despite his homeland success and reputation as New Zealand’s pre-eminent weight for age performer, Wall Street started the $3 million Cox Plate on the sixth line of betting and ran accordingly.

It was clear from the jump though that Wall Street wasn’t a happy horse: the big crowd unnerved him (he wasn’t the only one stirred up as they left the mounting yard), wanting to

rear before the gates opened and missing the kick badly.

“He (Wall Street) lost it at the start and wanted to attack More Joyous at the 800 or 900 (metres) and we never got the opportunity,” Lynds said later. “I’m not saying he would have beaten So You Think, but I’m sure he would have finished much closer if he had a better run.”

Still, Wall Street showed no signs of distress from the Cox Plate

IT WAS HARDLY AN AUSPICIOUS START, RUNNING FIFTH.

ALTHOUGH WALL STREET ONLY FINISHED A LENGTH OR SO OFF THE PACE, IT’S HARD TO IMAGE THAT LYNDS WAS THINKING HE WOULD BE ACCEPTING TROPHIES AT FLEMINGTON WITH THE HORSE A WEEK

SHORT OF TWO YEARS LATER.

performance and, fortunately, Lynds decided to stay and have a crack at the Emirates.

Certainly Lynds and co had over 600,000 reasons to smile after Wall Street poked his head through right when it counted: “He’s got a good turn of foot and it’s a great pleasure to come and win this. We’ve come here many times before and I haven’t had any luck but things have gone right this trip.”

Jockey Bowman, riding Wall Street on race day for the first time, was also very impressed with the effort: “Jeff and I spoke at length about the horse … we expected to be in the first four or five but they seemed to go really hard early and I didn’t want to stoke him up with those blinkers.

“He was pretty keen going to the barriers and I was able to settle him and that was the key to winning. I had a soft run early but there was a lot of interference in

front of me, it wasn’t bad just horses being shuffled back in front of me and I just had to get him out into clear room.

“He actually got into a nice rhythm then

and I was pretty confident at the furlong but they were coming from all sides at the post.

“It was a blanket finish and I was certainly at the top but he really fought on and that’s what you need, a horse that really wants to win and there’s no doubt that this guy’s like that.”

And if Lynds has his way, it won’t be last Australian crowds see of Wall Street: “We’re going to spell him and bring him back for the autumn and see how he goes right-handed and come back and have another crack at the Cox Plate.”

Ambitious plans to be sure, but then again … greed is good.

SHOULD I STAY …SHOULD I STAY …SHOULD I STAY …Following So You Think’s much publicised sale to Coolmore and Black Caviar’s demolition job in the Patinack Farm Classic, STEVE MORAN asks the question …

IPLEAD GUILTY TO THE charge. The possibly annoying peccadillo of wanting to weave song lyrics into my ramblings.

But this week I have no choice. ‘Should I stay or should I go’ - The Clash. That’s the question facing connections of Brown Beauty, Black Caviar.

Or in the case of So You Think, should he have stayed or should he have gone. It’s interesting to look at the respective

prizemoney earnings of the two horses. And, in doing so, we might have the answer to the question.

Each has won eight races. So You Think to earn $5.7 million dollars - Black Caviar just $1.2 million. Don’t you think that’s anomalous, to say the least, in a country where we breed for speed?

Now, recently, they ran the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs with not much more than $500,000 on offer. I think we can pretty easily trump them and woo the best sprinters, from around the world, with a Patinack World Sprint championship.

Reckon $2 million would probably do it. $1 million to the winner, $400,000 for second and $150,000 for third through sixth. Cover your costs if you run top six.

Now I appreciate it’s easy for me to sit on the sidelines and pontificate and I don’t have to manage the daily finances of RVL or the VRC or Patinack Farm or any other potential sponsor ... but surely $2 million

is not pie or Lucy in the sky with diamonds.

Perhaps tie it in with our neighbours Hong Kong and their International Sprint in December. A $1 million bonus for winning both. The HKJC simulcast and bet on last Saturday’s two Group Ones from Flemington. Commingling is getting closer. Like their club and governing body counterparts in Victoria, the HKJC is progressive in it’s thinking.

The Global Sprint challenge has underlined what can happen with the right level of cooperation between internationals clubs but a $1 million bonus for winning three races in the series is probably too great a challenge, and the base prizemoney for each race in the series is probably not high enough to make them irresistible.

Significantly higher prizemoney too for, say, the Lightning in the Autumn would be grand - perhaps galvanizing the support of all the major stallion farms - all those breeders for speed.

OPINION

While I have no problem with Sydney having the centre stage carnival in autumn - after all, we have the spring - there is talk of a Breeders Cup style fixture in that city and we might have to keep reinvigorating the Melbourne autumn. On the sprint scene, a pumped up Lightning and the introduction of another major HK sprint on their Champions Mile-QEII Cup program would surely ensure that the likes of Black Caviar and Sacred Kingdom race in their home countries and their region and lure all the best horses to Australia and Hong Kong.

This region is the sprinting capital of the world. The global sprint program has worked reasonably well. But some tinkering here and in Hong Kong in the first part of the year can work with

a natural progression, say, from Singapore in May to the wonderful races in England in June and July.

And while you will enjoy nothing better in racing than

the Royal meeting at Ascot, the prizemoney is not great enough to be irresistible unless you have a stallion prospect and given this region’s sprinting dominance, it is natural that any World Sprint championship finale should be in our part of the world in November and December.

Another truly international race at Flemington in Cup week would be a fantastic adjunct to the Cup. You might think the Cup has become too international but, trust me, it’s the only race in Australia that means anything to racing followers anywhere else in the world.

Of course, ‘internationalisation’ is becoming racing’s dilemma - for the owners, the fans and the administrators. Should I stay or should I go?

I was so delighted to be at Flemington to see Black Caviar win the best race I’ve ever seen. Certainly the best on paper. Four serious Group One winners didn’t rate a mention

in pre-race discussions. And I want to see Black Caviar again on these shores.

But there’s also a part of me which would like to see her travel abroad and ‘blow away’ her opposition as she did in the Patinack.

What a week we had. Too many races, the days too long for my liking but I don’t want to indulge in any petty criticism here and now. And perhaps if I didn’t have work to do, I would have a different attitude. Maluckyday, Brazilian Pulse, So You Think and Star Witness (twice); Lion Tamer; Americain and the Cup as a whole; Wall Street and, of course, Black Caviar.

All fantastic stuff but the mighty mare stole the show. Star Witness and Ortensia and All Silent - I’d back them to win a sprint race anywhere in the world. Except in one where Black Caviar was running. Anyway, that’s what I reckon.

Strapper, bookies clerk, Chef, hospitality manager, syndicate entrepreneur … Wylie Dalziel has packed a fair bit into his life since foaling down at Footscray in 1974. But Wylie reckons he’s just getting into stride and a horse called Moshe is poised to write him a whole new chapter.

Wylie DALZIEL

WYLIE DALZIEL says he’s from the ‘dark side’.

Now, before anyone starts

conjuring up images of Darth Vader, Wylie’s voice isn’t that deep and doesn’t harbour designs on galactic domination.

No, Wylie’s dark side stems from more altruistic motives. For instance, he feels compelled to explain to industry newcomers that racehorse ownership is not all wine and roses.

Which is OK when you’re talking to mates, but if your goal is to encourage people

to invest in YOUR syndication enterprise, full disclosure of potential pitfalls could be deemed ill-advised.

“Honesty can be a curse,” Wylie laughs, but then, on a more serious note: “We (the industry) devote a lot of time to promoting the ‘highs’ in racing, but people should be educated about the ‘lows’ too.

“I try to explain to everyone that enquires about joining one of our syndicates that it’s not an investment, it’s a hobby.

“People get all fired up with horses like Alinghi, the ultimate poster girl for syndication. She went on to make millions

on the track and was sold for millions, but horses like her are a rarity. A Lotto win.

“I take the approach that racehorse ownership – especially via syndicates – can present you with tremendous thrills and a wide range of social experiences, but don’t go in believing that whatever money you put into it will come back at you in spades.

“I stress that if you have the money to spare and that it’s not going to place any burden on your cash flow, then go for it … after all, if you do get a winner it’s the greatest fun you can have standing up!”

INDUSTRY PROFILE

Wylie formed Roy Higgins & Wylie Dalziel Racing in January 2009 with the Hall of Fame jockey, along with racing enthusiast Perry Sambor (of Tile Importer) as a major sponsor: each of them driven to provide syndicate members with the holy trinity of service: communication, social events, education … oh, and some fast racehorses.

Wylie is confident that they have provided the first three ingredients since the company’s inception and, as we’ll reveal shortly, they could well be on the way to supplying the fast racehorse bit.

It appears inevitable that Wylie would end up doing exactly what he’s doing … combining a talent for hospitality with a passion for racehorses.

Not that Wylie was surrounded by racing folk, although his grandfather (who died when

Wylie was 7) had been an SP bookie after returning from World War II.

And it seems the acorn didn’t fall far from the tree with Wylie – who started off reading form guides at 11 – running a book on the 1991 Melbourne Cup.

“I even got some of teachers involved – on the quiet – but then a few of the tickets, with my initials on them, got discarded and they were traced back to me. Luckily I was good mates with the vice principal’s son.”

Growing up near Ballarat, Wylie worked as a stablehand for Robert Smerdon and as a bookies clerk at country meets for Noel Graham, but it soon became pretty clear that he wasn’t going to spend his life mucking out boxes or swinging the satchel.

Leaving school, Wylie became an apprentice chef in Ballarat before lack of opportunities enforced a move to the big smoke, becoming a chef at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

We formed Roy Higgins & Wylie Dalziel Racing in March 2009 with the intent on selecting fast racehorses and providing syndicate members with plenty of social occasions, unparalleled communication AND education.

During his time at Royal Melbourne, Wylie bought into a greyhound (“a very slow one”) and joined a racing syndicate where he pretty much learned how you shouldn’t run a syndicate!

Eventually rising to head chef at Royal Melbourne, Wylie determined there was more to life than caramelized pork belly or Pâté de foie gras and applied for a managerial role at Chefs On The Run, a contract recruitment company which also provided catering for functions and events.

(Wylie still confesses a love for cooking much to the delight of his wife Leah and four kids, Georgia, Isabella, Ava and Finley. He’s also a cooking show devotee and once served on a committee with Master Chefs Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris).

Shifting to Chefs On The Run was a real game changer for Wylie: “I started as an operations co-ordinator, managing chefs and placing them in pubs and clubs, hospitals etcetera as short term casuals and on an on-call basis.

“About a year after I started at Chefs On The Run, I met a bloke who ran a M e l b o u r n e j o c k e y management company for the likes of Patrick Payne, Darren Gauci and Steven King who offered to sell the company to me.

“But I was only 25 at the time and I realised then I just didn’t have the necessary skills to run a business, so I passed it up … jockey management is certainly big business these days!

“However, I worked my way up to state manager at Chefs On The Run and learned all aspects of running a business. Fortunately, the company was keen to get more involved in the racing side of things which worked perfectly for me.

“It was during my time at Chefs On The Run that I met Roy Higgins …”

Eventually leaving Chefs On The Run at the start of last year, Wylie joined IASBET (now owned by Sportbet.com.au) as sales manager, looking after Read Rating.

“I promote and sell the Read Rating to pubs and clubs – both TAB and non TAB venues – on a national basis. It’s a great job and fortunately, it still allows me the time to dedicate energies toward the syndication business.

“Forming a syndication business with Roy is a dream come true. Roy was not only a champion jockey, he’s a champion bloke.”

(One of the original inductees to Australia’s Racing Hall of Fame, Higgins won the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership 11 times and rode over 2,300 winners including the winners of two Melbourne Cups, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, two Golden Slipper, four VRC Derbies etc.)

“We formed Roy Higgins & Wylie Dalziel Racing in March 2009 with the intent on selecting fast racehorses and providing syndicate

members with plenty of social occasions, unparalleled communication and education.

“The last aspect is very important. Trainers often work 18 hours a day and, as a result, their communication can be abbreviated to say the least.

“We’ve found that a lot of people just getting into the industry don’t know what ‘shinny’ means and wouldn’t have the first clue about ‘finishing with their tongue over the bit’.

“We make sure to embellish trainers’ comments to explain the nitty gritty and, hopefully, improve members’ understanding of the whole process.

“That’s why we have breakfasts at the stables, organise stud tours, functions on race days and nights out at a restaurant. I love the networking aspect too: a couple of syndicate members who had never met before now do a lot of business together after meeting up through racehorse ownership.

“We purchase around five yearlings a year, with Roy and the eventual trainer coming up with a short list at each sale, ensuring they tick all the boxes and agree upon what price we’re prepared to pay.

“It’s only early days yet, but we’ve got around 85% winners to runners and Moshe appears to pretty handy.”

Handy? Racing for the first time at Bendigo on 11 November – Remembrance Day! – Moshe absolutely demolished his rivals to score by six lengths.

An extremely impressive performance in its own right, but throw in the fact that Moshe is a full brother to Black Caviar and it’s hard to keep the adrenaline in check.

Purchased by Roy and Wylie for just $75,000 at the 2009 Melbourne Premier (Black Caviar had cost $210,000 the year before), Moshe’s owners watched with rapt attention as their new horse’s big sister won her first start by five lengths just six weeks after the sale.

Then she won another … and another … and another

… and is still unbeaten after start No. 8, vaulting to the top of the world’s sprint rankings following her victory in the Patinack Classic.

Even if Moshe is to win half as many races, he will become a valuable stallion prospect in his own right and provide owners with a handsome nest egg.

“I have this mate who has

wanted to get into a horse with me for 10 years. I kept telling him to wait and wait because I really didn’t think he could afford to lose his dough if the horse went nowhere.

“It didn’t matter how many times I explained to him that you can’t make any money out of it, he had to treat it as a hobby, nothing much will happen for year or so, it might be a while before his horse shows any form … blah, blah, blah, he just kept at me and at me. Finally, I relented and sold him a share in Moshe.

“Now, not only has he had the excitement of Black Caviar winning all her races, Moshe comes out and wins on debut.

“Amazing. My friend probably thinks I’ve been telling him lies all this time.”

If Moshe keeps winning and ALL syndicate members have a good time on their ownership journey, Wylie Dalziel might just have to learn to live with telling his mate a fib!

LION TAMER MIGHT not have been entirely ‘friendless’ in the ring prior to the $1.5million AAMI Victoria Derby-G1,

but on the sixth line of betting, he wasn’t the name on everyone’s lips either.

Still, the adage of “beware Kiwi stayers in the wet” came off the ark with Noah, so it should not have come as that great a surprise when Lion Tamer surged to the front two furlongs out and just kept increasing his lead. In the end, Lion Tamer recorded

the most dominant win of the Melbourne Cup carnival with over six lengths to spare on the line.

And, while Hugh Bowman snapped up his percentage for the winning ride, it’s debatable he ‘rode’ him harder than co-trainer Bjorn Baker.

Oblivious to the precipitation, Bjorn cheered and punched air to the beat of every stride throughout the final stages and, the moment Lion Tamer wrote his name in the history books, the young trainer grabbed

strapper Emily Holmes and lifted her off her feet.

Adding to the elation was the realisation that his father and joint trainer, Murray, had just put a big tick on his bucket list by taking out Australia’s oldest classic.

“I remember asking my father as a child what race do you want to win the most and he said the VRC Derby … so it’s very special to come here and win this,” the Bjorn again Baker told the assembled media. >>

One of the most enduring moments from the 2010 spring carnival will be a flash of theatre from the other side of the rail … fist pumping, strapper lifting elation from a rising star of the training ranks.Yes, despite the incessant rain, this was truly Bjorn Baker’s day in the sun.

Just two weeks before, the pair had gone within a length of snaring the $2.6 million Caulfield Cup when another of their Kiwi troupe, Harris Tweed, ran second to Descarado (Harris Tweed would later run a gallant fifth to Americain in the Melbourne Cup after leading them up 400m from home).

All up it was very a profitable carnival for the Fabulous Baker Boys, 87 year old owner Phil Bayly and jockey Bowman, between them snaring over $1.5 million for a couple of weeks work.

Importantly though, it stamped New Zealand’s dynamic duo – once and for all – as a force to be reckoned with on this side of the Tasman.

Not that Murray is any stranger to these shores. Before joining forces with Bjorn at the start of the 2008/09 racing season, Murray had put the polish on the likes of Sir Vigilant, Kates Myth, The Phantom, Miss Stamina, Lets Sgor, Staring, My Eagle Eye, Prized Gem, Emerald Dream, Dowry, Ambitious Owner and Fully Fledged. In his own right, Murray has won Group Ones in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and, of course, New Zealand, where he has also trained three NZ Fillies of the Year in Kates Myth, Lets Sgor and Staring.

The Phantom came close to giving Murray glory on our day of days when he the son of Noble Bijou ran fourth in the 1989 Melbourne Cup

before returning a year later and finishing a length second to Kingston Rule in the fastest Cup ever.

A former first class cricketer, 61 year old Murray started training in 1979 and aside from his considerable ability in that department, he’s a dab hand at horse trading, selling a number of top notchers overseas.

Indeed, Kibbutz – placed at stakes level at his only start as a two year old – originally raced out of Murray’s Cambridge stable before shifting to David Hayes and Group One success in the 2007 VRC Derby.

However, if Murray regrets missing out on an earlier Derby, he has a good way of disguising it and is fairly

pragmatic about the whole buying/selling process: “When an owner gets an offer and asks my advice, I ask them if they want a chequebook or a scrapbook?”

Besides, Murray gives the clear impression that sharing a VRC Derby success with his son just about beats the pants off everything else.

Certainly the two and a bit seasons since joining forces has been one helluva ride with their partnership hovering near the top of NZ training premierships and a phalanx of stable stars including Champion Kiwi 2YO The Heckler, Sydney and Auckland Cup placegetter, Mr Tipsy, AJC Derby winner Nom du Jeu (also second in the 2008 Caulfield Cup), Harris Tweed and Lion Tamer all adding to the silverware.

It might appear that Bjorn was somehow pre-destined to join his father as so many sons have done in the past: Cummings, Hayes, Hawkes, O’Sullivans, Camerons (Russell is close mates with the

Bakers and accommodates their horses at his Melbourne stables) to name but a few.

And yes, it does seem inevitable that Bjorn would eventually add his name to the shingle, but it wasn’t before he carved out a business career in his own right.

Attending Otago University in the late 90s, Bjorn is a qualified

pharmacist and plied that trade in his home country and in Australia, England and Ireland.

LION TAMER TAKES OUT THE 2010 VRC DERBY

Yet, true to form, during his time in the Northern Hemisphere he attended many of the top race meetings and spent time with Irish Hall of Fame trainer John Oxx and with leading North American trainer Christophe Clement.

Obviously, like any responsible parent, Murray wanted Bjorn to have something to fall back on, but given that the pair has now tamed Australia’s toughest cauldron, there’s no turning back.

In other words, expect to see plenty more hoopin’ and hollerin’ in the years to come.

Despite years of research into the underlying causes of shin soreness in young racehorses, there is still up to a 40-50% incidence of a young horse going ‘shinny’ in its fi rst prep as a two year old training on an Australian racetrack.

Some trainers appear to have higher number of shin sore young horses as compared to other trainers training on the same track. As tracks dry out in early summer, the risk is increased in all two year olds galloping on compacted, highly concussive track surfaces. The risk is also increased if young horses are galloped ‘too fast-too early’ in their preparation or when heavy front-ended, precocious young horses are over-galloped in a ‘get fi t quick’ program over six to eight weeks, or the training track has tight, poorly banked corners.

RECOGNISING THE EARLY SIGNS

Most young horses show subtle early signs before they go ‘shinny’. Although some trainers believe that a youngster needs to go ‘shinny’ to ‘toughen the legs’, there is a risk of long term damage to the front cannon bones and even the chance of bone failure and fracture. As well, if a young horse is worked fast in an effort to make it go ‘shinny’, the chances

are that the fetlock joints are likely to develop overload stress and the start of joint cartilage damage and subchondral bone collapse, which in many cases, require long term layoff from training and soundness issues as the horse ages in subsequent preparations.

Regular monitoring of track conditions and careful observation of the young horse for signs of reduced stride length and ‘heat’ in the shins will help to identify the early signs of shin soreness before they progress to a more advanced stage with the risk of long term unsoundness.

While slow, long distance pre-training helps to build and condition the muscles, joints and limbs, the bone that the horse is building is more suited to long, slow work rather than to racing.

If the shins become severely infl amed with deposition of a bone splint or a ‘bucked shin’ swelling, the bone laid down is a weaker form of fi bro-elastic bone as a temporary reinforcement to prevent bone failure. This type of bone has little residual strength and if the horse is rested from training, this temporary reinforcement ‘splint’ is resorbed. The bone profi le or cross-section returns to its original weaker structure that is unable to withstand the increased loading imposed by galloping too fast too early when training resumes.

HANDY HINT 1

Plan theTraining Program

to AllowCannon Bone Modelling

Training programs should be designed to allow the cannon bones to experience and adapt to the loading and deformation strain imposed by higher speed galloping. The leading forelimb is subjected to the greatest amount of strain, particularly when cornering, so it is recommended that the initial high speed work should be carried out down the straight to model the shins, reducing to a slower pace around the turns.

Galloping in a straight line will not induce periosteal reaction to the same degree as occurs when the cannon bones are loaded as a horse is galloped around a compacted, inadequately banked bend on the racetrack.

MANAGEMENT TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SHIN SORENESS

1. Short Gallops in Early Training Commence a program of short, straight-line gallops up the straight over 200 metres (one furlong), twice weekly, at least 4-5 days apart, from the third week of training to progressively load the cannon bones. Short gallops in a straight line do not cause undue stress on bones or muscles after 2-3 weeks of initial conditioning exercise. As the horse develops in fi tness, increase the speed and distance travelled to 300-400 metres at each fast workout. Bone modeling is a slow process as is bone fracture healing, so that a step-wise increase in loading over 8-10 weeks will allow time and stimulate modeling in response to the loading forces imposed.

2. Avoid Tight Circle Tracks Do not gallop young horses around tight, compacted curves or end circles on the track too early in their training preparation. Gallop only up straights initially, then work progressively faster into corners and around end circles to allow adaptation to the centrifugal sideways strain forces, starting after 6-8 weeks of training. Avoid sudden introduction to fast work and limit speed of galloping around unbanked, relatively tight bends initially, especially on dry, compacted tracks.

3. Train on Same Track It is best to train on the same track, so that the bends and surfaces are consistent, avoiding compacted areas on the rails when galloping on fast work mornings. The majority of racetracks have training tracks built inside the main grass, turf surface or sand track. These have smaller end circles and can impose additional loading, especially on odd shaped, rather than oval track designs, constructed to provide the length of straight required within the available land area.

4. Avoid Heavy Work Riders Once the young horse is controllable, change to a light-weight fast work rider (50-60kg) to reduce excessive loading as the horse is worked faster at the start of regular fast work. Each extra kg of rider weight is magnifi ed 5-10 times by centrifugal forces when galloping around bends. Avoid over-galloping a young horse - give more sprint-ups to increase speed fi tness.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

Young gallopers have a 40-50% riskof developing sore shins in their fi rstpreparation. Young harness horsesvery rarely develop sore shins becausethey race at slower speeds on bankedtracks and have two legs on the tracksurface at any one time to share theadditional loading. Racing greyhoundshave a 20% risk of developing shin sorenessif they are galloped around sharp bends ona poorly banked, compacted racetrack. Youngracing camels can develop sore shin bones when ridden fast over hard compacted desertsurfaces in early training.

5. Cold Therapy After GallopingApply cold therapy, such as ice boots for 5-10 minutes, after each gallop in the later stages of training. Cold water hosing (20-23ºC) for 5 minutes in the wash bay provides adequate cooling to reduce infl ammation - ice gel packs applied for 5-10 minutes are less effi cient at removing infl ammation. However, ice packs can be wrapped on both front cannons during a walk to cool-out, or during the trip home from the track to help reduce minor infl ammation and soreness as training progresses. A magnetic bandage with 1500 gauss fi eld strength, wrapped on both forelimb cannon bones, may be helpful to improve the rate of deposition of calcium and bone minerals and hasten the modeling and strength of bone laid down as it adapts to higher loading during fast work. The bandage can be wrapped in the afternoon and overnight when the horse is resting in its stable or yard.

6. Check the Shins RegularlyObserve for signs of a ‘proppy gait’ or shortening of stride. If early soreness is detected, cut back on the speed of fast work for 2-3 weeks to allow the shins adequate time to model and thicken the bone along the stress pathways. Apply cold packs after training and walk to assist bone repair. If discomfort is more severe,

HANDY HINT 2

Early Signs of Shin Soreness The early signs of discomfort due to bone surface reaction and infl ammation on the front surface of the leading cannon bone include shortened front limb stride, ‘proppy’ action with higher front limb action, running wide on a corner and galloping with the head held more upright and reluctance to ‘get on the bit’. In early cases, the front surface of the front cannon bone feels ‘warmer’ within a few hours after exercise if the hand is run down the front surface before each day’s work. As the infl ammation increases after each fast workout, a withdrawal response will be apparent if the front cannon bones are squeezed with the hand and in most cases, the horse will show lameness and head bobbing at the trot and change the lead leg during a gallop and rest it forward after a hard gallop.

apply a warming liniment overnight or alternatively (not at the same time) a clay poultice overnight until symptoms subside. In severe cases, it is best to rest the horse for 3-4 weeks until the soreness settles down and then recommence on a revised program as outlined above. When horses are rested, the cannon bone actually becomes even less rigid as modeling and the laying down of new bone is resorbed from along the stress lines.

7. Short Paddock RestIn mild cases of shin soreness, turning a young horse out for a 2-3 month paddock rest is a waste of time and reduces the chances of prize money earnings. A short 7-10 day spell to settle infl ammation with ice-packing and walking for 30-40 minutes daily, and then return to a modifi ed training program is the most effective way of reducing wasteful down time.

8. Reprogram Training After DowntimeFor each week that a young horse is rested-up because of other problems (eg. respiratory disease, joint problems, severe tying-up), back step its training program by 2 weeks to avoid shin soreness as the cannon bones may start to resorb calcium and weaken during the lighter work period

HAIR ANALYSISHAIR ANALYSISMaybe we need to get out more often, but mention ‘Hair Analysis’ and our mind instantly turns to the follicle challenges of Shane Warne. However, as important as it may be to the former spin king to retain his blonde thatch, hair analysis takes on a whole new meaning for our four legged stars.

In this comprehensive feature, KERRY MARSH (B.Ed., B.Ag.Sc) asks:

“Is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis an accurate method for determining the nutrient and health status of the horse”

Page 47: Track To Track Issue 66

SPECIAL FEATURE SPECIAL FEATURE

HA I R T I S S U E Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a soft tissue mineral biopsy

that is tested in a laboratory to determine mineral levels and is much more than a test for just minerals.

From a small sample of neck hair, it is possible to determine the status and function of the horse’s adrenal and thyroid glands, excesses and deficiencies of minerals and if toxic metal levels are present. It also provides an accurate picture of the horse’s

nutritional status over the past 10-12 weeks.

Equine Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is considered to be a screening test which provides much information about the health of the horse and can play a critical role in preventing serious problems by early detection. The most famous case of HTMA was being able to diagnose that: “Phar Lap did indeed die of arsenic poisoning.” Many sports stars are subjected to regular HTMA to check for drug and nutritional levels.

INTRODUCTIONHair tissue mineral analysis must not be confused with hair testing or hair analysis. Hair testing can vary widely in the technique used to test the hair such as divining, where a person picks up on the energy released or using a radionics machine which works by placing certain minerals on the machine with the hair and results are taken by the frequencies emitted.

Radionic accuracy requires an extremely skilled operator. Some businesses that offer hair testing often sell products to complement their tests and will not release the results until you agree to buy their products which can be costly.

SOME HISTORY

HTMA has been around for quite some time now. “The potential usefulness of hair analysis was established in the 1960s, but the most significant development in the field of hair analysis has taken place over the last 10 years.”

It was first used as a diagnostic tool in America on humans and has waxed and waned in popularity since. A re-emergence as to the usefulness of the technique began in the 1980s in America where improved technology and research saw HTMA used frequently in humans, in particular to determine heavy metal poisoning for which it is most known. It soon became apparent that there was enormous potential for using HTMA on racehorses whose nutritional condition was paramount to their performance. Due to the non invasive collection of sample

hair, it seemed like the perfect way to check mineral levels. Fast forward to the 21st century to find that, since a burst of research and clinical trials in the 1980s in America, not much data has been released since until the last 10 years or so.

The Japanese have led the field in terms of published research on racehorses where they concluded that, “The levels of trace elements in mane hair of horses can be used to assess diseases, metabolic disorders and nutritional status, because sampling and storage of hair are easier than those of other biological materials”.

Thus, a new interest in equine HTMA began.

WHY USE HAIR?

1. Hair samples are easy to take and easy to transport.

2. Mineral levels in the hair are about 10 times that of blood, making them easy to detect in hair.

3. Toxic metals are almost impossible to detect in blood because once exposed, they leave the blood and deposit in tissue.

4. Trace mineral levels are lower in blood making it difficult to get an accurate reading.

5. Blood tests vary in that a test performed today can vary from one done tomorrow.

6. HTMA takes the guesswork out of using supplements and designing a feeding program

7. A skilled practitioner can determine adrenal, thyroid and energy levels of the horse.

8. For when veterinary medicine fails to find a diagnosis

SOME CRITICISMS OF HTMA

As I stated earlier, improved technology has improved the accuracy of HTMA but “Utilization of hair as a biopsy material is controversial.”

However, to ensure that the test is indeed accurate, it is crucial to use the same laboratory for a repeat test to check for improvement or “tweaking.” HTMA is very similar to soil tests in as much as if a soil sample is sent to two different labs, the results are often dissimilar due to lab procedures, handling and methodology.

Some labs wash hair, some do not. It is now recommended that labs do not wash hair as this

will affect mineral l e v e l s

a n d

this results in an inaccurate reading.

Iodine is the only mineral that cannot be accurately tested in hair tissue. HTMA will show if there is a toxic level of iodine, but it cannot demonstrate a low level and 24 hour urinary analysis is the only accurate test for iodine status.

There is also the need to beware of a hair testing business that claims it can cure all matter of ills and diseases: this is simply impossible.

Results of the hair sample takes longer than a blood test.

Blood results can back in 24–48 hours whereas hair often is sent interstate and takes 8-10 days turnaround, sometimes longer if the sample has to be re-tested due to excessively high or low readings.

Most important is the sample of hair itself. For instance, if the sample is flawed, a flawed result

is produced.

Studies of a single mineral are mistakenly

addressed rather than a study of all the minerals and trace minerals which should be viewed as a system.

“The multiple r e l a t i o n s h i p s between minerals and their affect

21st CENTURY FEEDS AND SUPPLEMENTS

on metabolism appear to have a greater effect on hair mineral content than a single mineral deficiency or excess”. Once again, I repeat that a skilled interpretation of the test is paramount. Unless the practitioner has a comprehensive understanding of the macro minerals, trace minerals and their synergistic and antagonistic agents, recommendations can vary widely.

We seem to have lost the art of feeding horses. Nowadays there are feeds and supplements to supposedly fix every problem. Many of the pre packed feeds are akin to human take away foods – they are fast, easy and who really knows how they will affect your horse?

The problem is that every horse has a different metabolism. Many horse owners, in an attempt to provide the best for their steed, inadvertently overdose their horses on supplements and additives because they read (or are told by someone) that a certain product will get their horse running and looking magnificently.

But the burning question is, just how do you know what the mineral requirements are for your horse? >>

From my experience of testing many horses over the last few years, HTMA has been an invaluable tool for detecting toxic metals and mineral imbalances

OTHER WAYS TO DETERMINE THE HEALTH AND NUTRIENT STATUS OF YOUR HORSE

1. An analysis of the feed your horse receives. This will include crude fibre, crude protein, calcium and phosphorus. Everything the horse eats will need to be individually packed into zip lock bags and sent to the lab. Testing for trace minerals is more difficult and the whole exercise is time consuming and costly.

2. 24 hour urine test. Very accurate. The best method for determining mineral levels. However, collection of urine, unless your horse has been fitted with the collection vessel and is in a situation where it cannot be dislodged, is out of the question for most horse owners.

3. Soil sample of the paddock the horse is agisted on. Accurate if horse is only eating grass (which most do not), but does not include toxic metals unless requested (which are common). Does not give recommendations on how to correct the balance in animals.

4. Blood test. Excellent for all the obvious health reasons but problematic in measuring trace mineral levels. Plasma is of little benefit in diagnosing dietary imbalances. These values are only relevant for diagnosing dysfunctions in homeostatic mechanisms.

SOME OF THE MANY SYMPTOMS OF MINERAL IMBALANCE AND TOXIC METALS POISONING

1. Changed behaviour, difficult to manage

2. Tying up

3. Seedy toe, greasy heel

4. Pacing fence line, chewing fences, eating dung, dirt

5. Excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss

6. Lack of stamina, speed and poor performance

7. Hind gut acidosis, alkalosis

8. Ringworm

9. Fertility problems in stallions and mares

10. Arthritis

From my experience of testing many horses over the last few years, HTMA has been an invaluable tool for detecting toxic metals and mineral imbalances which are very common in horses.

Horses are rarely tested in routine veterinary medicine for metal toxicities. Undiagnosed and untreated toxicities have ended the careers of many race and performance horses and HTMA has helped many horses literally get back on track.

In my experience, HTMA is the simplest, cost effective and accurate tool to measure nutrient and mineral imbalances in horses.
