At 6 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, Channing stu-dents boarded the bus and left for the annual UIL aca-demic meet in Lazbuddie. The academic meet is an opportunity for students to showcase and compete in ar-eas outside of athletics such as speech, debate, mathemat-ics, spelling, and computers. The day began with a trip
through the rain to make the directors meeting at 8 a. m. Students then went straight to events and remained busy throughout the day. This year Channing’s UIL district was reorganized and now consists of Naza-reth, Lazbuddie, Kress, Hap-py, Hart, Hartley, Texline, and Adrian. Even though the district was different, eleven students individually quali-fied for the regional meet at Levelland on April 13. Out
of the nine schools compet-ing, Channing is the second smallest with 30 high school students enrolled and placed 2nd overall in the district. The UIL one-act play cast performed, “The Danc-ers” by Horton Foote, at the district level on March 29 at Amarillo College. It is a story of two young people in the 1930’s who gain con-fidence as they get ready to begin life after high school.

School board elections are canceled. Only two peo-ple, Benny Moore and Dan Shipley, applied for the 3 open positions. This leaves one position unfilled. The board has 180 days from the May 12, 2007 election day to appoint a member to fill the one year position. The board approved to extend Channings’ deposito-ry contract with Happy State Bank for another 2 years. The district owned property at 719 Greenwood will receive some updates that consist of new siding, & windows. The next school board meeting will be Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m.
The Channing 4-H members have been busy this month in local, county, and state events. On April 2, the Hartley county 4-H Council del-egates Monty O’Hair, presi-dent, Corinna Browning, vice-president, and Breanna Hall, secretary, attended the ribbon cutting for the new Happy State Bank opening in Dalhart. Happy State Bank ex-tended a thank you gift of $500 to the Hartley County 4-H Club. The bi-county fashion show was held in Dalhart, April 3. The fashion show incorporates many areas of
competition including fash-ion design, garment con-struction, purchasing, and modeling.

and also received the best model award in the senior category. Madie placed 1st in buy-ing and received the best model award in the interme-diate category. Emma placed 1st in con-struction. Rylee placed 2nd in con-struction, 1st in design and received the best model award in the junior catego-ry. At her first Houston Livestock Show, March 9, Rylee Barber exhibited her 1,250 pound registered Her-eford steer. She placed sec-ond in the lightweight class. Over 130 Hereford steers were exhibited, and in a show this size, placing in the top 10 is a big accom-plishment. Her hard work and dedication bring great pride to the Channing com-munity.

UIL Results Continued from page 1Although it was an excellent play that was very well per-formed, it did not advance. This year the play was
directed by Judy Barber and Cheri Grant. “It was an ad-justment working with new directors, but we appreci-ate them for volunteering,” said Brooke Moore. “Now
that we have adapted, hope-fully we can pick up next year where we left off,” said Corinna Browning.

The junior high and high school track teams re-cently competed in the Wol-verine Relays at Springlake-Earth. Thursday the junior high portion of the meet was held; however, due to inclement weather, Willie Morris was the only member of either team to participate prior to the meet’s cancella-tion. Morris placed 1st in the 1600 meter run with a time of 6 minutes. Friday the field events were cancelled due to the muddy conditions, and the track meet was moved up enabling the high school
runners to finish before bad weather created more prob-lems. For the high school girls, the 400 relay team of Jessica McCoy, Jayda Ra-mey, Chelsey Messick, and Shae Sanchez came in 4th place, with a time of 57 seconds. Megan McLain won both the 100 and 300 hurdles, running a 16.2 and a 47.7, respectively. For the boys, Jonathan Truelove finished 2nd in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:24. Jared Lowe also earned a silver medal in the 200 me-ter dash and a bronze in the 100 meter dash. Next on the Eagles’ agenda was a track meet scheduled for March 30 and

“A delicious pasta and chicken dish with garlic, sun-dried to-matoes and fresh basil. INGREDIENTS1 tablespoon butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped (or the dry packaged sun-dried tomatoes)1 cup chicken broth, divided 1 cup heavy cream 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil 8 ounces dry fettuccini pastaDIRECTIONS In a large saucepan over low heat, melt butter; add gar-lic and cook for 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes and 3/4 cup of the chicken broth; increase to medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for about 10 min-utes or until the tomatoes are tender. Add the cream and bring to a boil; stirring. Simmer over medium heat until the sauce is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper on both sides. In a large skillet over medium
heat, warm oil and saute chick-en. Press on chicken occasion-ally with a slotted spatula. Cook for about 4 minutes per side or until the meat feels springy and is no longer pink inside. Trans-fer to a board; cover and keep warm. Discard the fat from the skillet. In the same skillet, over medium heat, bring 1/4 cup chicken broth to a boil; stirring the pan juices. Reduce slightly and add to the cream sauce; stir in basil and adjust seasonings to taste. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add fettuccine and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain, transfer to a bowl and toss with 3 to 4 tablespoons of the sauce. Cut each chicken breast into 2 to 3 diagonal slices. Re-heat the sauce gently if needed. Transfer the pasta to serving plates; top with chicken and coat with the cream sauce; serve.

Healthy People Need a Healthy Weight:
by Blake Nelson and Brayden Aistrup
Healthy weight can re-duce the risk of many diseas-es like high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. Being overweight does not always mean you have ex-cess body fat; sometimes it is muscle development, like athletes have. This is not considered a health prob-lem. Currently 50% of people in the U.S. are considered either overweight or obese. Reducing this percentage has become a national health goal. Obese people also have a greater risk of Type II dia-betes, arthritis, respiratory problems, and certain types of cancer. The more extra fat a person carries, the more likely they are to have prob-lems. Besides health prob-lems, overweight people can have social and emotional problems. Some people can be very cruel to those who are obese, and this can cause a great deal of stress, and could cause overweight peo-ple to have a low opinion of themselves. Personal value
is not based on body weight. Overweight people are not less worthy than people who have a normal weight.
Unsafe Weight Loss Prac-tices:
by Dalton King People who think they need to lose weight often want to get quick results. They often look at the weight scale three or four times a week and think that the weight is not coming off fast enough. Therefore it leads them to look toward crash diets, or fad diets. New weight loss schemes turn up each week. They promise fast, inexpensive, painless results. Consumers spend millions of dollars on these fads each year. Some examples are pills, body wraps, fasting, or “eating all the protein you want.” Such diets may lead to fast weight loss, but they are not healthy and can not be maintained over a long period of time. Crash dieting can lead to a lifelong cycle of weight gain and loss called the yo-yo syndrome. People often end up gain-ing more weight than they lost, and then they search for yet another unhealthy crash diet. Fad diets don’t teach people better eating be-havior. Most of the weight comes back, and they return to their old eating habits. People should not think of losing weight as “dieting.” They should stick to healthy, nutritious eating habits as a lifestyle. People should en-joy food, but they should en-joy it in moderation.
* Avoid eating a large amount of food at one time, spread your calorie needs out throughout the day.* Eat three to six small planned meals instead of eat-ing haphazardly. * Keep your portion sizes small, this will help you avoid binges.* Make breakfast a habit, it keeps you from being ex-tremely hungry in the morning hours, so you won’t overeat at lunchtime.
* Keep low calorie, nutritious food in the cabinets and re-frigerator, and keep high calo-rie foods out of sight.* Eat slowly, lay your fork down between bites, you will feel full with less food.* Avoid taking second help-ings of food.* Drink a glass of water before a meal, to help make you feel fuller, so you will eat less.* Use a smaller plate so mod-erate portions do not look so small.
