The Navy Yard is a 1,200-acredevelopment located along 7 miles of historic waterfront at the confluence of the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers.

This Philadelphia Navy Yard will be the site of the staged 2020 Olympics. The masterplan is de-signed to interling with the existing stadiums. The venues in the Olympic Village will be icon in nature because of their large scale. Proximity of the buildings creates a visual link be-tween the venues that helps the public progress through the village.

Chapter 2 Conclusion:

This design allotted only one side for public seating. This created more emphasis on the village, but it did not maximize the use of the venue. Seating would have to be enveloped around the circumference of the whole track, to increase the number of good seats, and to encourage the runners along their whole run. It also would create a sense of continuity instead of being broken up by sides.

Chapter 3 Conclusion:

This model resolved the lack of seating. The concept of trying to relate the arena with the Village and the City through views was reinforced through the louver system. Unfortunetly, the notion of views is still too linear. After researching views, our team gained further insight into what creates a view.

Visual perception is a better reinterpretation of the concept we were striving to achieve. It is the process of how one percieves a spacethrough what they see. Visual perception relies on more then simply the view. Light can give emphisis, create atmosphere, etablish heirarchy, and can alter the mood. Space creates the viewing platform. For example,a chair in a large room is percieves very differenty then a chair sitting in a small dark intimate closet. Our team began to focus more on the notionof visual percession and the experience it creates as one moves through space.

PRECEDENCE STUDY

41

In order to establish the connection between the Olympic Village and Philadelphia, the builing was rotated 90 degrees to line up with the new central axis. This eliminates the need of the strict louver system. The connection can be established by the new axis, and the lines of sight along the inside of the roof.

The rendering below demonstrates the view from one end of the track and focuses on the city which is cleary pres-ent. The red marker indicates the elevation of Interstate 95. The structure of the arena in the back will come up to the top of that elevation. Then the material will swich to glass so that it won’t disrupt the visual connection between the city and the venue.
