TR TASC Unit Selection Guide
As a market leader in thedesign and manufacture ofinnovative and durable drivesand control systems, thecompany has built a reputationas a supplier of reliable, robystand cost effective solutions toproblems in the control ofindustrial processes, both inthe UK and worldwide.
The company's uniqueexperience and expertiseprovides an unrivalled level ofservice and back-up for allindustrial applications. A wideproduct portfolio includes theOulton Switched ReluctanceDrive, NECO DC & AC Motors,Electropower Gears, PrecisionStep Systems, DISCO & SupaflexDrives, EDC Traction Motors andGlentronic Phase Converters,The industry standard TR TASCUnit eddy current drive unit isdescribed in this publication.
The compact 4200 Controller.
VTR TASC UNITThe TR TASC Unit is a friction-free eddy current couplingwhich provides infinitelyvariable torque and speed andis driven by a standard squirrelcage motor which is directlyconnected to the mains, Asimple controller, consisting ofa single electronic circuitboard, provides closed-loopspeed control by comparingthe feed-back signal from aninbuilt tachogenerator withthe set-speed demand signal.
The TR TASC Unit eddy currentcoupling is, in many respects, the most versatile drive and isavailable in various forms:-
• Variable speed output.1 Variable torque output.B Infinitely variable load
(braking),• Constant output speed with
variable input speed.
The TASC eddy current couplinghas been accepted as theindustry standard and it is verydoubtful any other drive systemis as simple, robust, inexpensiveand forgiving of abuse.Although the TR TASC Unitsdescribed in this publicationare mainly used as variablespeed drives, units areavailable which provide theoptions listed above.
CONSTRUCTIONAND PRINCIPLEOF OPERATIONA torque tube mounted on ahub incorporating a coolingfan, is driven by a motor atconstant speed. A polewheelassembly fixed to the outputshaft is free to rotate withinthe torque tube. A d.c. excitationcoil, mounted within thepolewheel assembly is suppliedfrom the secondary of arotary transformer mounted onthe shaft.
The triac output stage of theTR TASC Unit controller suppliesthe coil with variable voltageand current. A magnetic fieldis set up in the polewheel

inducing a voltage, andcausing eddy currents to flowin the torque tube. These eddycurrents produce their ownmagnetic field within thetorque tube which interactswith the main field andcauses the polewheel to rotatein the same direction as themotor. Torque is a function ofcoil current.
Closed-loop speed control iseffected by comparing thesignal from a tachogeneratordriven by the output shaft, witha "set-speed" reference signal.Any error, or difference, between the two signalsdetected by the speed errorsensing circuit, causes thetriac output stage to adjustthe coil current, and hencetorque to maintain set speed.
The TR TASC Unit is aheteropolar type whichproduces higher starting andrunning torques than earlierhomopolar types. Startingtorques can be as high as340% of rated torque as theTR TASC Unit eddy current driveallows the pull-out torque ofthe driving motor to be utilisedduring starting. The design ofthe TR range includes apatented rotary transformerthat allows current to reachthe main coil, which rotateswith the heteropolar polewheel, without the use of brushesand slip-rings, which needregular maintenance. As withprevious units, the TR modeldoes NOT include a centre-bearing which tends to overheatin service and have a short life.
Speed range at constanttorque is up to 45:1 andregulation, with built inclosed-loop control, is betterthan 1%. Soft- starting isstandard as the motor starts"off-load" and accelerationand deceleration rates areadjustable.
TR TASC UNITFEATURES &BENEFITS
:The TR TASC Unit eddy currentdrive is an extremely versatileconstant torque drive whichprovides outstanding infinitelyvariable control of torque andspeed, Together with itsassociated compact controller,it combines low prime costwith zero maintenance, reduced energy consumption, negligible RFI and mainsharmonics.
TR TASC UNIT CONTROLLERThe TR TASC Unit speedcontroller is a single, compactprinted circuit card, only100mm x 160mm which issuitable for the whole range ofTR TASC Units irrespective ofpower rating. It is availablesuitable for panel or rackmounting, and all customeradjustable controls are factorypreset, only requiring finetuning adjustments if necessaryon site. The control circuit isopto-isolated from the mainssupply and the controller willaccept all common inputcontrol signals.

NOTES1. 'Centre height includes foot blocks under the TASC UNIT or MOTOR to enable mounting on a flat bed (refer to
dimension'H'),2, These models are supplied with feet on the MOTOR as well as the TASC UNIT (refer to dimension 'HB').3 'AH' dimension is the distance from centre of unit to MOTOR terminal box Ed. The MOTOR terminal box is on
top on models fitted with motors up to and including frame Dl 12 (see selection guide). All other models onRHS viewed from output shaft, unless specified LHS when ordering.
4. Model 225TR is not available as standard in totally-enclosed format. For information on ducted clean-airsupply please contact our Sales Dept.
5. 'AD' dimension is the distance from centre of unit to TASC UNIT terminal box lid, The TR TASC UNIT terminalbox is supplied on top unless otherwise specified. (E3-RHS viewed from output shaft, E6-undernsath, E9-LBS).
The first two or three numbers indicate theshaft centre-height or frame size, foilowedby the letters TR (transformer, rotary}. Thenext number gives the number of poles ofthe motor and, therefore, indicates motorspeed: 2 indicates 2-pole (3000 R.P.M.nominal), 4 indicates 4-pole (1500 R.P.M.nominal) etc. The final number indicatesthe particular model. They generallyascend as the motor power increases.Controller Designation 4200 is thestandard panel mounting speed controllerfor 220/240V supplies. 4200/R is thestandard rack mounting speed controllerfor 220/240V supplies. 4100 is the 110Vsupply version of the 4200. 4100/R is the110V supply version of the 4200/R.
VARIABLE SPEED DRIVESYSTEM SELECTION GUIDE
Rated Speed The rated speed of aTASC Unit is Its maximum speed at ratedload and torque. A small speed differencebetween motor speed and TASC Unit ratedspeed exists because, like the squirrelcage motor, the TASC Unit is an inductionmachine and needs this "slip-speed"to achieve full torque. The data givenhere is for drives on 50Hz supplies. Asimilar table is available for 60Hz drives.Bated Torque The rated constant torqueof a TASC Unit is set at a level which fullyloads its drive motor. It is achieveableover the speed range and, for continuousoperation, it must not be exceeded. However, higher torques can be achievedfor short-term use such as starting, accelerating and overcoming shock loads.Starting Torques The starting torque statedis that achieved with the TASC Unit atambient temperature. Values up to 340%of rated torque are achieveable asthe motor pull-out torque can be utilisedfor starting, With the drive at its normaloperating temperature, the starting torqueis reduced slightly,Maximum Continuous Stall Torque This isthe maximum level of stall torque in anambient temperature of 35"C. If this levelof torque is Increased, the Unit will exceedthe thermal limit where short-term useonly is possible. If this level is above therated torque, then the rated torque isstated as the limit to avoid overheatingthe drive motor.Speed Range The thermal speed rangestated will not cause overheating of theTASC Unit when it Is operated continuouslyat rated torque at the stated minimumspeed. If the thermal limit of a TASC Unitis greater than the rated torque, theminimum speed is given as zero. The thermal speed range can be increasedby decreasing load torque, operating ina lower ambient temperature orincreasing the flow of cooling air.The tacho-generator fitted to theTASC Unit gives accurate closed-loop
