    1.0 SCOPE

1.1 This document covers acceptance criteria for surface inspection of steelcastings examined non-destructively by magnetic particle or liquidpenetrant inspection.

    2.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

    2.1 ASTM standards

    i) ASTM E-165: Test method for ASTM liquid penetrant examination.

ii) ASTM E-709: Guide for magnetic particle examination

iii) A-903 steel castings, surface acceptance standards, magneticparticle and liquid penetrant examination.

    3.0 TERMINOLOGY

    3.1 Definitions

    3.1.1 Linear indication

An indication whose length is equal to or greater than three times its width

shall be classified as linear indication.

    3.1.2 Non-linear indication

An indication whose length is less than three times its width shall beclassified as non-dinear.

3.1.3 Relevant indications: Relevant indications are indications which resultfrom mechanical discontinuities. Only indications whose major dimensionexceeds 1/16 in (1.6 mm) shall be considered relevant.

    4.0 NON DESTRUCTIVE TEST PRACTICES:

Non destructive test practices shall be as per E-165 for liquid penetrantinspection and E-709 for magnetic particle inspection.

    5.0 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATIONS

5.1 Personnel performing examination shall be qualified in accordance withour acceptable written procedure or SNT-TC-1A-LI.

    6.0 EVALUATION OF INDICATIONS

6.1 All relevant indications shall be evaluated in terms of acceptance criteria.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA PAGE 3 OF 4

6.2 Mechanical discontinuities are indicated by bleed out of the penetrant orretention of the magnetic particle examination medium. However, falseindications may be produced by localised surface irregularities, metallurgical discontinuities or magnetic permeability variations. anyindication in excess of the acceptance criteria which is believed to befalse may be re-examined. Surface conditioning may precedereexamination. Liquid penetrant method may be used verify the presenceof surface discontinuities which has been previously indicated bymagnetic particle method, if agreed by the purchaser and manufacturer.

6.3 Broad areas of fluorescence, pigmentation, or particle accumulation, which may mask indications of discontinuities are unacceptable, and such

areas shall be cleaned and reexamined.

    7.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

7.1 Individual relevant linear and non-linear indications exceeding thespecified acceptance levels in Table-1 are unacceptable.

7.2 Ten or more relevant indications, although individually acceptable, arecollectively unacceptable when they occur in any 6 sq.inch (38.7 S.cm) ofcasting surface, with the major dimension of this area not to exceed 6 In.(152 mm) taken in the most unfavourable orientation relative to theindications being evaluated.

7.3 When the casting surface is being inspected to acceptance levels I, II orIII the following relevant indications, although individually acceptable arecollectively unacceptable when they are grouped as indicated in 7.3.1 and7.3.2.

7.3.1 Four or more in a line, separated by 1/16 In. (1.6mm) or less edge toedge.

7.3.2 Four a more that are clustered and individually separated from thenearest adjoining indication by 1/16 In.(0.6 mm) or less, edge to edge.

7.4 When the casting surface is being inspected to acceptance level IV or V,individually acceptable relevant indications grouped as described in 7.3.1and 7.3.2 shall be considered a single relevant linear and non-linearindications respectively; and be evaluated in accordance with 7.1.

    8.0 CERTIFICATION

8.1 The manufacturer shall certify that inspection was performed inaccordance with the appropriate practice (Practice E-165 for liquidpenetrant inspection or E-709 for magnetic particle inspection) nd that theputs were found to meet.the requirements of inspection level specified asper specification A-903/903M (including year and data)
