EDSC 440S TPE REFLECTIONTeaching Performance Expectations: How do you rate yourself on the TPEs?

Identify three TPEs in which you feel you bring strengths to the classroom. Then select two in which you feel you need to improve. Follow the prompts below.

RankTPEs - AREAS OF STRENGTH

Identify three TPEs by number and name. (1 pt each) Describe and explain why this is a personal strength of yours.* (2 pts each)

1TPE 5: Student EngagementThis is a strength of mine in the classroom because at least half of the instructional time in my classroom is spent having the students apply what theyve learned with activities. Its an Economics class so the activities have definite real world applications that help the students better understand the content and connects it to their lives. I make sure that I always clearly communicate the instructions for the activities and do at least one example together with the whole class to ensure that they understand whats expected of them. While students do the activities I am constantly walking around, answering questions, assisting students, and keeping them on task.

2TPE 2: Monitoring Student Learning During InstructionThis is a strength of mine in the classroom because as stated previously I am constantly walking around to monitor students progress on activities during class time. I walk down each row and make sure to look at and informally evaluate each students work and I use that information in real time to adjust my instruction. Many times Ive noticed lots of students having the same misunderstanding after monitoring their progress so I take that time to address the whole class to clarify what theyve misunderstood. During lectures I also ask frequent questions to gauge how well the students are comprehending the concepts Im teaching.

3TPE 13: Professional GrowthMy master teacher frequently gives me helpful feedback on my instruction (for example that my lectures are good but I need to work on projecting my voice and sounding more excited to command students attention and keep them interested) and I use that feedback to improve my teaching skills. I also self-evaluate and reflect on how my instruction went and usually change up my teaching strategies as the day progresses. For example, Ill notice that the earlier periods of students are having trouble completing an assignment so Ill reflect on ways to improve instruction and adjust my strategies for the later periods of the day to make the content more clear.

RankTPEs - AREAS IN NEED OF IMPROVEMENTIdentify two TPEs by number and name.

(1 pt each) Describe your plan for improving this area.* (2 pts each)

1TPE 7: Teaching English LearnersWhile I know and understand the theories and principles of teaching English Learners, I dont believe Ive actually applied them during instruction. I need to teach vocabulary more explicitly and figure out how to differentiate the lessons Ive planned much better.

2TPE 8: Learning about Students

Its a challenge and a very slow process to learn about 100+ students; Im still having trouble even remembering names. Mainly, this is an issue of time its going to take months to begin to know the learning styles, prior knowledge, their ideas/aspirations/interests, and backgrounds of my students. Ill continue to interact a lot with my students to learn more and more about them over the course of the year.

Total: 15 Points _____* Each response should be a few sentences long. It should be reflective and relevant to you. The pertinence and thoughtfulness of your comments will be evaluated.

When complete, this assignment should be one to two pages.
