The Toyota Dealer 450 is the second round of the 2014 Donaldson Cross Country Championship and it gives T oyota South Africa Motors great pleasure to partner with the Cross Country Commission of Motorsport South Africa in bringing this event to the Mooi River area of KwaZulu-Natal for the first time. As a committed commercial partner of the national cross country championship, T oyota fully supports the Cross Country Commission in breaking new ground with cross country car racing by taking it to new parts of the country. After many years of sponsoring the Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, round of the championship, Toyota was happy to switch its support to the KwaZulu-Natal round last year, which saw the return to the sugar-growing area of Eston with the Toyota Dealer Sugarbelt race. It has been decided to alternate the Toyota Dealer Sugarbelt event with a new KZN venue and now the residents and motor sport fans in the Mooi River area will have a great opportunity to witness this exciting form of motor racing right on their doorstep. As reigning champions – both in the driver/co-driver championships as well as the manufacturers’ championship T oyota has started the new season with high expectations. Our two Castrol Team Toyota Hilux V8 pickups competing in the premier Class T (four-wheel drive vehicles with engines over four litres) did us proud in the opening round in Harrismith in March. We are looking forward to another successful outing for our team, but we also wish all competitors the best of luck and a safe and enjoyable weekend of cross country racing. 4 - 5 April 2014

The battle between the Production Vehicle factory teams will resume atthe Toyota Dealer 450 in Mooi River this weekend with the Team CastrolToyota squad aiming for a second successive double success.

Reigning champions Anthony Taylor and Dennis Murphy and Leeroy Poulter/RobHowie got the Castrol Toyota squad’s 2014 campaign off to a rollicking start with aone/two triumph on the RFS 450. The two Castrol Toyota Hilux crews came inahead of Atlas Copco Ford Racing pair Manfred Schroder and Japie Badenhorst, andwill be aiming to again hang out the business as usual signs - with a win on a Toyotasponsored event an added incentive.

Mooi River is home territory for the Pietermaritzburg based Atlas Copco Fordsquad. The event is, however, a new addition to the Donaldson calendar and thatnegates any thoughts of home ground offering any sort of tangible advantage.

For all that the Pietermaritzburg team is sorely in need of a win. The last timethey headed for victory lane was at the corresponding race last season whenformer South African champions, Chris Visser and Japie Badenhorst, took thevictory on the way to seven podium finishes and second place in the championship.

Five of the next six races were won by the Team Castrol Toyota squad, with arun of four wins in a row giving Taylor and Murphy the Production Vehicle title witha race to spare. After the RFS 450 result the Atlas Copco Ford team needs toimmediately hit back.

Schroder will again deputise for Visser who underwent pre-season neck surgery, and he and Badenhorst and Bertholdt/Rousseau will be hoping for clean runs. Evenat this early stage of the season there is a great deal at stake for both factoryteams, and there is more on the line than pure pride.

There is enough quantity and quality in rest of the Class T field to give the

factory teams a little cause for concern. Kobus van Tonder and Freddie Kriel(UniFreight Ford Ranger) were the RFS surprise package with a memorable fourthplace, and will be looking for more of the same on the short trip down the N3from home base Harrismith.

A growing band of suspects will be among theSpecial Vehicle category favourites at the ToyotaDealer 450, in Mooi River this weekend.

The race breaks new ground in KwaZulu-Natal andthere have been a couple of interesting developmentssince the opening race of the season the RFS 450. Thatdoes not, however, alter the fact that crews like reigningchampions Evan Hutchison and Danie Stassen (MotoriteBAT Viper), Quintin and Kallie Sullwald (Elegant Fuel BATVenom), Hermann and Wichard Sullwald (Elegant FuelStryker) will be expected to be among the frontrunners.

After a seesaw battle Quintin and Kallie Sullwald edgedout Hutchison and Stassen on the RFS 450, and anotherintriguing battle between the two crews is on the cards. The other Sullwald crew were among the non finishers, but did enough in the qualifying race to suggest they willbe serious challengers at the front of the field – althoughthey will be under a little pressure to quickly get theirseason back on track.

Other crews who can be expected to feature amongthe leaders are Gerhard du Plessis and his teenage sonGerhardus, who started the season with a solid third inthe ageing Jimco, and the husband/wife pairing of Mariusand Jolinda Fourie in the PHB BAT. Du Plessis will bejoined this time out by brother Laurence and anotheryoungster, Adriaan Roets, in a Zarco.

No list of pre-race favourite would be completewithout the enigmatic Colin Matthews and in anothertwist Matthews in the Century Racing CR3, will rejoin theClass P fold for the rest of the season. He will also want tohit back after a ‘did not finish’ in Harrismith, while MarkCorbett and Juan Mohr sit out Mooi River in favour ofgiving the new Century Racing CR5 a test outing at theAbu Dhabi Desert Classic.

It is also appropriate that hats be thrown into the ringby a quartet of KwaZulu-Natal crews. National seriesnewcomers Arthur Barnes and Anthony Usher (BAT) gotoff to a fine start with fourth place on the RFS 450, andClint Gibson/Gary Campbell were a solid sixth in the DirtSport Components Porter.

Daniel Brookes and Gavan Gray (Ducatis PropertyBAT) will want to bounce back from a disappointing RFS450 non finish, but the biggest KZN threat could comefrom Lance Trethewey and Geoff Minnitt. Trethewey is aprevious national race winner, and has bought the MotoriteBAT Venom previously campaigned by Hutchison andStassen.

If Trethewey can quickly come to grips with a car nowrunning in LTE colours, he and Minnitt will be a distinctthreat. “We will now be taking a cannon to a gunfight,” saidTrethewey, but lack of seat time in the car could backfireon the pair.

The Mooi River race will also see a first appearance ofthe season for Cape based Derick du Toit, along with CraigGray, in the CRC BAT. The car was previously campaignedunder the Atlas Copco banner by Johan van Staden andMike Lawrenson.

Jimmy Zahos, with Zaheer Bodhanya replacing AlanSmith in the Cobalt Racing Stryker, will want to build on anencouraging start to the season, but it is a differentscenario for Brett Parker and VZ van Zyl in the SizananiPlastics Jimco. They were early casualties in Harrismith andneed to come up with a solid result.

With Matthews back in the fold Class P has aninteresting look about it, with reigning champions JohnThomson and Maurice Zermatten (Zarco Magnum) alsoneeding to recover from a disappointing fourth on the RFS450. The steady John Telford and Andrew Makenete(Calcamite/Rhino Tanks BAT) will want to build on theirHarrismith win, while Jeremy Wood will take over drivingduties from Rob Wark in the K9 Racing Aceco withveteran Ashley Thorn again in the hot seat.

The father/daughter combination of Coetzee andSandra Labuscagne (Chemsystems Zarco) will join the listof crews in recovery mood after a disappointing start totheir 2014 campaign. A number of KZN crews bolster theClass P entry with the category set to produce someinteresting clashes.

The new Class G or Side by Side category willhave its second official outing at the ToyotaDealer 450 this weekend.

Class G, designed to be a feeder series for thenational championship, will again see competitorscompleting a 100 kilometre qualifying race, and oneloop of the two laps that make up the nationalchampionship event. Only the Polaris RZR and Can-Am Maverick models are eligible for Class G, and thecategory runs independently of the Donaldsonpremier categories and crews start after the nationalcompetitors.

Leander Pienaar and Carl Swanepoel dominatedboth the qualifying race and the main event at the RFS450. The major opposition for the pair is likely toagain come from Pietermaritzburg youngster GarethWoolridge and Simon Harrison (Polaris Razor), andmotorcycle trick rider Brian Capper and Jaco Swartin the Regent Racing Polaris.

On the KZN regional front there is potential fordrama with a string of national championship regularsgoing into battle in Class A. Clint Gibson and GaryCampbell (Dirt Sport Components Porter) edged out

Arthur Barnes and Anthony Usher in the openinground, but face additional tough competition from thelikes of Daniel Brookes/Gavan Gray (Ducatis BAT),Lance Trethewey/Geoff Minnitt (LTE BAT Venom),Glenn Gibson/Clint Brook (Dirt Sport ComponentsBAT) and Reg Sutton and Warren Benecke in a Zarco.

In the KZN Class B category Rob Spencer andKevin Theron (Zarco Lite) will again cross swordswith Gareth Woolridge and Simon Harrison in thePolaris Razor. Also in the mix will be Carl van derMerwe and Mark Olivier (Aceco) who also made asolid start to the season in Harrismith.

Much the same applies to Hennie deKlerk/Johann Smalberger in the RFS BMW X3, andRichard Fuller/Gary Austin another BMW.

Ruwacon Racing pair Pieter Ruthven and Hansie

Rheeder got their Class S challenge – for cars up tofour litres with solid rear axle suspension – off to asolid start at the opening event. That provides themwith a confidence booster with tough oppositioncoming from team-mates Louw de Bruin, in the dieselpowered Ruwacon Ford Ranger, newcomers PietKotze and Salomon Victor (Toyota Hilux) and LukeBotha who will joined by the highly experience AndreVermeulen in the Force Fuel Toyota Hilux.

Archie Rutherford/Gerhard Schutte (Regent Racing

Nissan Navara) and Deon Venter/Ian Palmer (4x4Mega World Toyota Hilux) will fancy their chances, while Heine Strumpher will make his debut withbrother-in-law Henri Hugo doing the co-driving. Theywill be out in the Toyota Hilux shared last season byHugo de Bruyn and Hugo.

Doug Fear and Kurt de Villiers (Brytons RemovalsToyota Hilux) will do battle with veterans HenriZermatten and Johan Gerber (Ford Ranger) in Class E.
