Toy Story Midway Mania! by Brian Szaks Where can one go to throw pies, darts, balls, eggs and rings in the company of their favorite characters from Toy Story? At Toy Story Midway Mania at both the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World. This new, interactive dark ride raises the bar for ride-game attractions. It’s a high- energy, immersive 3D/4D adventure putting guests in the center of a midway of carnival games featuring animated characters from the Pixar’s popular Toy Story series. However, these aren’t just any midway games. They are midway games designed for toys to play. The only way to play them is to shrink down to their size. Upon entering the attraction, guests are welcomed by Mr. Potato Head. This state-of-the-art audio-animatronic version of the spud man acts as a carnival barker, capable of engaging guests in conversation and preparing them for the non-stop action they will be taking part in. Mr. Potato Head is capable of “seeing” guests and interacting with them and seems lifelike right down to the ability to remove his own ear! Once guests put on their 3D glasses, they “shrink” to the size of a toy and board the carnival-themed ride vehicles, which are grouped into pairs and capable of spinning. The winding track takes guests through “Andy’s Bedroom,” filled with oversized murals and toys. The vehicles angle into position facing five different Toy Story Midway Mania game booths. The booths are represented by interactive projection screens that seamlessly respond to guests’ actions and skills during the games. As guests aim for 3-D animated targets using their own on-board spring-action shooters, the targets explode, crack, pop and sometimes shoot back! Guests ride and sit in pairs, and points earned are displayed on video screens as they play the games, inciting a friendly Step Right Up to 28

The games include:

“Hamm & Eggs” in which players launch eggs at various

barnyard targets.

“Bo Peep’s Baaa-loon Pop” presents a landscape full of

balloon sheep, trees and other objects at which guests

can launch darts.

“Green Army Men Shoot Camp” where the challenge is

to break plates with baseballs.

“Buzz Lightyear’s Flying Tossers,” a ring-toss game

with Little Green Aliens, planets and space ships as

“Woody’s Rootin’ Tootin’ Shootin’ Gallery,” a trip

through various Wild West scenes where players

shoot darts at various targets.

A final “Woody’s Bonus Roundup” encourages
