It seems like September was gone in a blink of an eye. I had end of month and year closings along with end of quarter reports and three webinars (meetings you attend by way of computer) in two days so if you have been here I’m sure you have noticed the craziness. Now we will settle down and enjoy the beautiful fall we are having. Do you enjoy the cool

nights as much as I do? In a few weeks we will begin Open Enrollment season and I’m asking if anyone needs information and assistance to please call for an appointment and I will be glad to help you. Jamie and Angela who used to help me out will no longer be coming here, unfortunately their funding was cut and I am happy to report that even though one door closed another has opened and they are in new jobs they enjoy. I have been getting updates and the news seems uplifting that there might be a State budget within a few weeks. Thank you for all your generous donations. This has helped us to keep going financially. Our biggest expense is food, so you can help by remembering to make a reservation so we don’t order too much food and have to pay for left overs. The Department of Transportation told me now our new bus will be here in 5 to 7 months. I was glad to hear that even though it is going to be longer than I thought, at least we are still getting it. I’m happy! September is National Fall Awareness Month so please watch your step! If you know of anyone that would be interested in working as a personal assistant to seniors, please contact me.

Bunco Raises $95202 Yes, someone gave their two-cents worth toward the Bunco event on September 17, at St. James Parrish. Special thanks to Darleen Sandheinrich, Shirley Rinck, Sheila Campe, Bonnie Mueller and all those who brought desserts, served desserts, donated bunco prizes and ensured the event went smoothly. $952.02 will purchase 2380 cartons of milk at $.40 per carton. Porch Sale-October 16 Donated items are needed for the October 16, 2015 Porch Sale at the Community Center to benefit the Millstadt Senior Center activities. Please bring your gently used items for the Porch Sale to the Community Center before the day of the sale. The sale will start at 8:00 am so be early for the best selection. All proceeds from the Porch Sale are used to support Meals on Wheels and activities at the Senior Center.

SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD The Senior Advisory Board serves as an active advisory group to the City Council. This Board advises the staff and Council on planning and organizing various activities that provide meaningful recreational, social, educational and health services to the community’s senior citizens. The Senior Advisory Board strives to be a channel of communication between staff, senior citizens and the community. They take an active part in supporting the senior community through involvement and development of programs and fund raising to provide for these programs. In addition, the board provides assessment of current and future needs of the older adult population in our community for the purpose of community development. Meetings held on 1st Monday every 3 months.

Frederick Frierdich Frederick O. "Fritz" Frierdich, 90, of Millstadt, Ill., born, Oct. 17, 1924, in Belleville, Ill., passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill. Fred was retired from Hunter Meat Packing Company and from a lifetime of farming. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, Ill., the Millstadt VFW Post 7980 and the St. Clair County Farm Bureau. He also proudly served his country in the United States Army in World War II. He made many friends as he and his brother Eugene sold produce from the back of their truck alongside of route 158 between Millstadt and Columbia. Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, nee Mueller, Frierdich; his parents, Edward and Bertha, nee Hankammer, Frierdich; his brothers, Clemmons and Victor Frierdich; and his sisters-in-law, Florine and Delores Frierdich. Surviving are his two sons, Don (Mary) Frierdich and Bob (Mary Kay) Frierdich; four grandchildren, Tiffany (David) Wenge, Chad (Meghan) Frierdich, Ryan (Sara) Frierdich and Katie (Nate) House; 10 great-grandchildren, Kerrigan and Lane Wenge, Chase, Bryce and Maeci Frierdich, Emma, Sophia and Abby Frierdich, Sydney and Cash House; his brother, Eugene Frierdich; and his sisters-in-law, Audrey Frierdich and Nancy Grace. He is also survived by nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

David, who died from a car accident on September 11, 1981 at the age of 15 always took time for older people. He spent many hours listening and talking to them. Although he died twenty years to the date before the tragic 9-1-1 incident he would have been very upset and would have continued to remember those that lost their lives.

Millstadt Chooses Native Indian Doctor as Legislator-First American Judge. Navajo Ben dispenser of Indian medicines, is now Justice of the Peace of Millstadt township. The Indian was honored by the citizens of Millstadt at the last township election and according to latest reports has qualified for the office and the honors which go with it. Navaho Ben and his family have been residents of Millstadt for a little more than a year and during that time he and his wife have been peddling patent medicine all over the county. His Millstadt neighbors evidently thought well of his legal ability and when after the recent election, the ballots were counted, it was found that Millstadt had a full blooded American for its law dispenser. It is believed to be an absolute certainty that this is the first time that a descendent of the original Americans has been so honored in St. Clair County. Judge Navaho Ben is well known in this city. He appeared in a local justice court some time ago to represent the defendant in some case which was however decided against him

cage-free environment within the next decade. Currently, only 10% of the eggs are produced by chickens cage-free.

Geraldine P. "Gerry" Richardson Geraldine P. "Gerry" Richardson, 89, of Millstadt, Ill., born July 5, 1926, in Smackover, Ark., died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, surrounded by her loved ones.Gerry graduated from White Oak High School in 1943. One of the most cherished memories of her youth was playing first clarinet in the White Oak Marching Band, having received many awards and accolades.In 1945 she met her husband to be, a young army sergeant, just returning from the World War II Pacific Campaign. After eloping in 1946, they originally moved to St. Louis, Mo., later settling in Cahokia, Ill., where they reared their two children, Betty (Jeannie) and Louis (Joe).Gerry received her associate's degree in business in 1972 from Belleville Area College. She then worked for UFCW Local 219 for 16 years, retiring in 1987.Favorite pastimes in her early years were bowling, crocheting, and gardening. She was an avid Cardinals Baseball fan and caring animal lover. In her later years her love of solving crossword puzzles became her favorite pastime. She was a devout member of Maplewood Park Baptist Church of Cahokia; which included joining Helping Hands (making lap quilts for those in need), Friday Lunch Ladies, and XYZ.Gerry was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Louis R. Richardson in 2001; and her parents, Roscoe E. Pearce and Thelma M. Pearce of White Oak, Texas.Surviving are her two children, Betty J. Thomas (Richard) of St. Albans, Mo., and Louis E. Richardson (Marta) of New Baden, Ill.; three grandchildren, Jill Simmons (Jeff), Michael Aubuchon, and Amanda Richardson; and three great-grandchildren, Maggie, Carter and Bailey Simmons.

Jerry McEvilly Jerry D. McEvilly, 86, of Millstadt, Ill., born August 20, 1929, in Hurst, Ill., died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.Mr. McEvilly was a Korean War Navy veteran. He was a community liaison for the Illinois Department of Transportation for 20 years and the former owner and president of McEvilly and Company Insurance Agency. Jerry's passions were his family, especially his grandsons. He enjoyed playing golf, reading, and was a serious wine collector. He loved traveling the world with his loving wife of 59 years. Pop never met a stranger and if you became his friend, you were his friend for life. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Monica J. McEvilly; his parents, John J. and Willie K., nee Vernon, McEvilly; his three brothers, Jack, William, and Danny McEvilly; and his two sisters, Margaret Piggott and Catherine Zeller.Surviving is his wife, Loretta, nee Buese, McEvilly; his three children, J. David McEvilly of Belleville, Ill., Christopher J. (Linda) McEvilly of Millstadt, Ill., and Dr. Brian C. McEvilly of Vacaville, Calif.; his three grandsons, Nick, Andrew, and Garret McEvilly; and his sister-in-law, Lillian McEvilly of Indianapolis, Ind.; and was a dear uncle to many loving nieces and nephews.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.

Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.

Bible Study At Senior Center An informal Bible study will be offered at the Millstadt Senior Center, on the 2nd and 4th Monday at 10:00 am. This is a non-denominational study and all are welcome, regardless of religious background, and there is no cost. The

RECYCLING PROGRAM Recycling continues the first Saturday of every month at the Township Garage on East Harrison Street. Volunteers will remove the recyclables, glass, cans, paper, cardboard and number 1 and 2 plastics from your vehicle from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. This program is available for all residents of Millstadt Township and the Village.

A FINISHED BATCH IS CARRIED FROM THE COOK-HOUSE BY Mr. and Mrs. Stiffler. After it has thoroughly cooled it will be placed in containers and sold at the rate of 50 cents per pound. Although they grow only a small crop of sorghum on their own land, the Stifflers produce molasses for a number of other growers.

FALL AND HARVEST TIME are synonymous across the nation but there is an even surer sigtn for residents of the Floraville area. When stacks ofr sorghum cane appear in the yard at the Steve Stiffler home on the Floraville-Millstadt Road and smoke appears from the chimney of an outbuilding, you can be sure that summer is over. Harvey Reichert of Millstadt, who helps during this season, adds to a stack of fresh-cut cane while Eric VanBuren, 3 1/2, samples the sweetness.

IN SMALL NUMBERS, lengths of the cane are hand-fed into a crusher by Mrs. Helen VanBuren and her husband, Harvey, have taken over the sorghum operation which was initiated by the Stiffler family in 1944 and is one of the last still in operation in the area. Stiffler’s sorghum molasses is not to be confused with the low-quality “blackstrap” molasses which is still popular as a supplement for animal feed.
