REPORT OF CANAAN FREE BED FUND

Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, Hanover, N. H.

October 9, 1967

Mr. Fred Bryson

Selectmen's Office

Canaan, New Hampshire

Dear Mr. Bryson:

We are enclosing herewith a summary of the charges made

against the Canaan Free Bed Fund for the period January 1,

1967 to September 30, 1967. In order to comply with our hos-

pital fiscal year, we will from now on mail our yearly state-

ment during the month of October instead of January the fol-

lowing year.

During the past nine months the Canaan Free Bed

Fund in the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, Hanover,

New Hampshire, has rendered nine days' service to three resi-

dents of the Town of Canaan, New Hampshire.

The charges at the minimum hospital rates for services

rendered to these patients amounted to $400.00.

The portion of the hospital's income from Free Bed

Funds allotted to the Town of Canaan for the period January

1st to September 30th, 1967 amounted to $637.50. In addi-

tion an unused balance of $1,151.54 from December 31, 1966,

plus a cash payment from the Treasurer of your Trust Funds

in the amount of $190.67, brought the net allotment to $1,979.-

71. Subtracting the service rendered from this figure, there

is an unused balance of $1,579.71 as of September 30, 1967.

The usual summary is enclosed, showing the various

charges to the Canaan Free Bed Fund.

161

Page 64: Town of Canaan NEW

Please accept my personal thanks for your kindness in the

administration of the Fund during the past nine months.

Sincerely yours,

. W. L. WILSON, Administrator

LEBANON REGIONAL AIRPORT AUTHORITY

December 11, 1967

Selectmen

Canaan, New Hampshire

Gentlemen:

The close of the fiscal year at Lebanon Regional Air-

port is close at hand and we would like to report to you some

of the projects undertaken in 1967, and proposals for 1968.

As in previous years, we again v^^ish to solicit your support.

The airport serves a large area, and is second in the state

in number of passengers handled. We expect an 18% increase

over last year in number of passengers enplaned.

Northeast Airlines still serves the area and a new hne started

service in June of 1967, giving a more diversified schedule. Athird airline started operations on December 1, 1967, operat-

ing from Portland, Maine to Lebanon and Albany — a major

link in East-West travel for Northern New England.

We have undertaken some projects this summer to expand

parking facilities for both automobile and aircraft; also, to

repair a taxiway to insure continued service during the spring

season. Brush cutting on the airport and four miles of power

lines feeding the obstruction lights have been completed.

Safety of the flying public is a constant factor with the Leb-

anon Regional Airport Authority. Snow removal alone, to in-

sure year round service, costs $10,000 a year.

The aviation industry has doubled in the last five years

and is expected to double again in the next five years. Also,

Route 89, which is nearing completion will be an important

factor in the easy accessibility to the airport. We expect more

people will use this facility. The Twin State Area is fast de-

veloping into an all season vacation area, as industry continues

64

Page 67: Town of Canaan NEW

to grow at a rapid pace. The Lebanon Regional Airport is a

key factor in the development of recreation facilities and in-

dustry.

The Lebanon Regional Airport Authority is developing

plans to expand facilities to meet demands resulting from

rapid growth that is already affecting this area. They are

vitally interested in a new terminal facility to better serve the

public. This is but one of the many things on the list, but we

must attach priorities to the facilities required to better serve

the flying public.

A copy of our financial statement for 1968 is enclosed.

We are asking you to include an Article in the Warrant to

help support the operations and maintenance of the airport.

Thus, we ask the Town of Canaan, N. H., to vote upon

our request for an airport grant of $350.00 at the 1968 An-

nual Town Meeting. We would welcome the opportunity to

discuss our needs with your Budget Committee.

Sincerely,

S. RUSSELL STEARNS

Chairman

REPORT OF THE FOREST FIRE WARDEN

AND DISTRICT CHIEF

After several successive years of drought, the rains of 1967

came as a welcome change. Our record of the past fire season

is good. Our thanks to all who contributed to achieve this good

record. Continued improvement in the matter of accurate,

prompt detection and rapid effective suppression action can

help to maintain this good, worthwhile record even though we

do not have an abundance of rain as in the fire season of

1967.

It will help if we follow these simple suggestions:

1. No burning of debris and waste between the hours of

9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. and then only with a written permit

from the Forest Fire Warden.

2. Take debris and waste to the town dump.

3. Maintain a clean, safe dump.

4. Keep matches away from young children.

5. Be sure matches and smoking material are dead out

when we discard them.

6. Set a good example for others in fire prevention.
