Volume 25, Issue 2 FEBRUARY 2012

Over the last few weeks I have fielded a lot of

questions about outdoor fireplaces. The Fire De-

partment discourages the use of outdoor fire-

places, however use is not prohibited as long as

the unit does not produce smoke or noxious odors.

An outdoor fireplace must be a minimum of 15

feet from any structure and only used with sea-

soned firewood. The houses in our town are close

together and many residents open their windows

during the cool winter nights. It is impossible to

keep the smoke from spreading throughout the

neighborhood and if the police or fire departments

receive complaints, you will be required to extin-

guish your fire.

There have been a lot of complaints about the use

of fireworks in the town and the police depart-

ment has responded to calls throughout the

year. Fireworks may be entertaining, but can be

extremely dangerous to the amateur user and peo-

ple in the surrounding area. Each year across our

country people have been injured and killed by

the use of these devices. Please use good judg-

ment in your decisions with regards to these types

of pyrotechnics.

Parking in our town has always been and always will

be at a premium, but with few exceptions if you call

us ahead of time we can work it out. If you know you

are having a get together and the amount of cars com-

ing exceeds your driveway space, give myself, Sgt.

Kelley or Chief Kniffin a call prior to the event. This

also helps with notification if your neighbors (whom

you didn’t invite) call us; we can give them an idea of

what is going on and when it may be over.

And along these lines if you ever have a question

about potential problems please give us a call; if we

can we will be more than happy to find out the answer

to the question if we do not know it. The more inter-

action between the police department and the people

we serve lets us do our job better and easier.

The busiest day for the Mayors Youth Council has

always been the Easter Egg hunt, if memory serves we

went through 3000 thousand eggs last year and a ton

of food, the food is donated by the Sailfish and every-

one who makes it a success is a volunteer. As in all

years past the hunt will be on the day before Easter,

April 8th 2012. See you there.

Department

Calling all volunteers!

The turtle patrol needs your help…

could you commit to at least one

mation, please call Sue Fleming 267-7325

Public Works has been busy keep-ing our sanitary sewer system operational or as we like to say, keeping it flowing. This year’s capital improvement project in-cluded the removal of an existing pump from our Lake Dr. lift station and the installation of a new 20 horsepower pump. The old pump was from 1997 and retired from the Town after 14 years of dedi-cated service.

Public Works Director Walt Fleming

A new 911 system was recently installed in our Police Dispatch center. To install a new fiber optic line to the building a horizontal bore took place under the town hall parking lot to the AT&T equipment on the south side of the park-ing lot to the dispatch building. As you can see from the picture (left), our sewer pipe got in the way. The pavers on Edwards Lane in front of the Fire Department had to be excavated and the pipe repaired. So Public Works has been busy keeping the flow going!

At their annual reorganization meeting at the end of March, the Town Commission appoints members to the town’s Planning and Zoning Board. This board has always been a vital part of the Town, and is di-rected by the Town’s Charter:

. . to periodically review the general overall wel-fare, design and appearance of the municipality with regard to buidings, roads, utilities, storm and sanitary sewers, improvements and all new pro-jects of any nature. They shall periodically review the town ordinances and codes and shall further revise, amend or rewrite such ordinances and codes to properly meet the requirements of ne-cessity, future planning or growth of the munici-pality. Such suggested revisions, amendments or new ordinances and codes shall be submitted in writing to the commissioners. . .

The Planning and Zoning Board meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., with occasional spe-cial meetings scheduled from time to time. Interested residents please send your letters and resumes to Carolyn Gangwer, Town Clerk, 247 Edwards Lane, Palm Beach Shores, Florida 33404 or submit them via email to [email protected].

TOWN MANAGER UPDATE

On numerous occasions I have reported about the inlet

dredging and believe it will be helpful to provide a visual

(below) of the areas being referenced.

A small dredging operation is planned to begin the middle

of March and should take approximately 4-6 weeks. The

dredging will only be in the settling basin and the entrance

of the channel, and will not enter the inlet. The material

will be placed in the near shore which is much less intru-

sive since there will be no need to tie up to the jetty or off-

load or pump out the material.

The next major dredge is being scheduled for November

(as we had requested) and is expected to last two months

with plans to be completed by full season. This operation

will extend to the expanded settling basin and will include

dredging the entire inlet. We will be invited to attend the

planning meetings over the next few months and will have

an opportunity to voice our concerns about how the opera-

tions will affect our residents and visitors.

I will keep you updated as additional information is avail-

able. As always I encourage you to contact me with any

questions or concerns you have about this and any other

matter.

SEASIDERS NEWS

Our month started with great luncheon pro-

gram. Laurel Sauer was our guest speaker

and entertained us with interesting tales of the televi-

sion world. There was a good turnout for bridge and

games day at the Community Center. The book club

took on some heavy reading for discussion - "The

Big Short" - and came away more knowledgeable

about the real estate crash. A group enjoyed lunch-

eon or High Tea at the Serenity Tea House. The Four

Arts group had a fun time touring the Old North-

wood Art and Antique area. Don't forget our BIG

BAZAAR on February 10th and 11th from 8am to

1pm. There will be electronics, furniture, antiques,

kitchen items, a working freezer, bikes, crafts, jew-

elry, greeting cards, chair massage, a bake sale,

clothing boutique, fresh flower arrange-

ments, a food court, books and games, etc.

Tell your friends. All proceeds go to charity.
