Cover photo: The towers of the Colonia Hotel in downtown Columbia have been a symbol of Columbia International University since its earliest days when the university, then Columbia Bible College, was located there. The CIU Prayer Towers on today’s CIU campus were patterned after the towers on the Colonia, and the finials that capped the Colonia towers are on display behind the CIU Administration Building.

That’s what happened when Hedy Jones and

her son Barton grad-uated from Columbia International University in 1981. But the family connection to CIU doesn’t stop there. Hedy’s husband Gene graduated from CIU in 1979, and the Jones’ other son Ralph did the same in 1984. Barton returned to CIU for seminary and graduated in again 1986.

The result? Ralph went on to law school, plus both sons served for a time with The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) in Japan. While Gene and Ralph are both with the Lord now, Hedy continues to minis-

ter to women and Barton serves as a pastor in Florida.

But things may have been different for the Jones family if it were not for CIU alumnus Earl McQuay (’54) and his wife Rose (’55). While living in Colorado, Earl and Rose met Gene and Hedy when Gene was stationed at Lowrie Air Force Base as a military dental

surgeon. Coming to know the Lord late in their lives, the Jones’ were hungry to learn more about God and to grow deeper in Him. Earl told Gene he would be a great fit for CIU and urged him to consider his alma mater. Little did anyone know getting a CIU education would become a Jones family affair.

The McQuays say they have met two types of people through the years, “those who attended CIU and those who wish they attended CIU.” Their desire has been to share Christ and the place where students live out “To Know Him and To Make Him Known.”

Sandy Seychew Howard (’64) says her education at CIU was founda-tional for her calling as the director of children’s ministry at a church in Ohio. Her love for ministry made a big impression on her granddaughter Katelyn McFarland. As a matter of fact, one day while helping Sandy at the church, Katelyn said she would like to be involved in the same type of work as her grandmother. Sandy told Katelyn CIU would be a great college choice to prepare her.

Soon after, Sandy learned that Steven Curtis Chapman, Laura Story and Jason Gray would be in concert at CIU’s 90th Anniversary Homecom-ing, and knew Katelyn would enjoy being in attendance. So she packed

up Katelyn and her friend Haley Groen and traveled from Ohio to Columbia for Homecoming 2013! CIU’s Admissions Office arranged for Katelyn and Haley to attend a couple of classes, take a tour of the campus and have lunch with the students.

“I know they had a good time during the weekend and I have no clue how God will use the weekend in their lives down the road,” Sandy said. “I do know though that they saw the campus and were in

a place for God to speak to them about what He wants them to do.”

Who will you refer to CIU? Like Earl and Rose McQuay, you could be touching not one person, but an entire family. Or like Sandy Howard, you may influence the life of curious

teens with hearts longing “To Know Him and to Make Him Known.”

And be sure your referral takes advantage of the $1,000 Alumni Referral Grant. Just have them visit www.ciu.edu/referral and fill out the form. Grants are awarded as funds are available.

Who Can You Refer to CIU?Your referral is worth $1,000 to a prospective student

It always brings joy to a mother’s heart when she sees her child walk across the stage on graduation day. But imagine the joy in a mom’s heart when her child and she walk across the same stage to receive their diplomas.
