Volume 74 Issue 7 July 2019
As we begin this year’s giving campaign here at Plymouth Place, I am
mindful of our strong history of giving. Our residents, their families,
and our Board members have for many years given out of care, love,
and concern for our wonderful home.
For many years, our giving was directed to our Endowment Fund.
Part of our promise is that no resident will be turned away for lack of
funds. The Endowment Fund has discretely provided assistance to
fulfill that promise. In addition, a portion of the balance of that fund
was lent to the organization to assist in the creation of our wonderful new building. That
was a necessary loan and the building would not have been built without it. As the new
building joyously filled to capacity, the loan was repaid to the Endowment Fund. That
fund again has a generous balance available for assistance to residents when needed.
In 2018, we asked that residents, families, and Board members consider directing their
donations to our Scholarship Fund. That request was happily met; the Scholarship Fund
is at a healthy level, and we are providing scholarships to a growing number of our staff.
In 2019, our giving campaign is focused on our Campus Renewal Fund – the fund used
to make capital improvements to our building. The building is now more than ten years
old and, despite the best efforts of our incredible housekeeping and maintenance teams,
is beginning to show its age. We want your home to continue to look its best for you,
but it’s also important to consider that having our building look beautiful and well-kept
helps our employee recruitment. Imagine coming to a job interview in this lovely
building and wanting to work here every day.
It is also critically important that the building look its best when potential residents and
their families come to tour. You may recall the updates that you did to your home
before you sold it to come to live at Plymouth Place. It is very important for us to be
doing those updates continually as your potential neighbors explore what life might be
like inside our walls.
Plymouth Place is a place we are all rightfully very proud of, and focusing this year on
capital will keep it looking as wonderful as it is.

I just passed a speed limit sign on I-294. 55 MPH maximum. 45 MPH minimum. HA! The
traffic was log-jammed at 10 MPH with frequent and prolonged full stops. Sometimes, due to
circumstances beyond our control, changes, health, or plans cannot move at our desired speed.
Get angry? No faster. Honk and gesture? Still 10 MPH. So use the time to reflect and
regroup... look how far you’ve come! You’re closer to the destination than when you started!
Others are sharing the experience with you. And even at this unexpected pace, may the road
you travel always lead you home.
The residents of Greg’s Place and Assisted Living will be going on our annual trip to Brookfield
Zoo on July 15 at 9:30 a.m. We will have much fun exploring the zoo from the comfort of the

Come one, come all! We will be hosting our 3rd

booth for a memorable picture of you and your loved one. Come for some good old-fashioned
fun!
Join us for a film series with discussion afterward beginning July 8 on Mondays. The
series, “Painting the Stars: Science, Religion, and an Evolving Faith,” will look at how there is a
communion between science and faith. While there are connections among the weeks to be
sure, each session is free standing so you do not have to be at all of the them as you enjoy
your summer trips.

It has been brought to my attention that some of you have inquired as
to whether there was going to be any memorial or tribute to MJ Burditt
on her passing. It was her family’s decision to not have a service, but we
would like to offer those who are interested an opportunity to
remember her in another way. As you may know, MJ was a true movie
buff and really enjoyed the movies that are offered here at Plymouth
Place. She even went as far as to give Victoria a list of movies she felt the Plymouth Place
residents would enjoy seeing. Therefore, we are setting up a “movie fund” in honor of MJ that
will be used by the Life Enrichment team to rent movies, including those from her list, to show
at both the Monday and Saturday Movie Nights. Donations may be brought to me in the
Development office.

Volunteer Spotlight
Maria Landivar became a volunteer at Plymouth Place last November working in Greg’s Place.
She came to this country from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where she completed her Medical Degree.
Maria lives with family and is studying for her Medical Residency in the United States. She
enjoys visiting with the residents in Greg’s Place, doing arts and crafts with them, having picnics
on the porch, and sharing so much more of herself.
Due to Maria’s confidence and outgoing personality, she was offered and accepted the job of
night receptionist here at Plymouth Place. The residents of Greg’s Place will miss her, but she is
a wonderful addition to our staff. We are certain she will stop in to see them from time to time.
Development NEWS
The Plymouth Place annual report gives a comprehensive overview of how our
mission, vision, and value is being lived out daily at Plymouth Place through results.
This journey of excellence is apparent in the feature article written by Doris Bryant,
Board Chair of Plymouth Place, in this month’s Tower Topics as she shares the
history of giving at Plymouth Place and introduces our giving focus for 2019. All
proceeds from this year-long campaign will be used on capital improvement
projects to keep Plymouth Place at the helm as a 5 star rated community. Plymouth
Place is also offering naming opportunities for key capital improvement projects. Be on the
lookout for the Annual Appeal, including a donation reply envelope indicating different ways to
give. This year we added the option of a recurring gift as part of the appeal – a great way to
budget one’s giving over a year.

Plymouth Place Staff: Katharine (KiKi) Barnett, RN
Clinical Hospital Liaison
KiKi Barnett wanted to be a nurse since she was a little girl.
Great influences were her grandmother who was a nurse in
World War II, her mother who is a school nurse, and her aunt,
a nurse practitioner. She grew up in Wheaton with an older
brother and a younger sister, attending Wheaton
Warrenville South High School. Her next step was
graduation from the College of Nursing at the University of
Illinois Chicago (UIC).
Hinsdale Hospital hired her immediately where, after eight years on the
surgical floor, she was clinical coordinator. Meanwhile, her sister was a
social worker in a senior living facility in Minneapolis and helped encourage
her to look outside a hospital environment for a possible position in senior
living for a more compatible lifestyle. While browsing the Internet, she
spotted an open position with Plymouth Place as a hospital liaison. After
three days of intensive interviewing, KiKi was hired. She reports to Kate
Curran in marketing as she markets our community through relationships
with the hospitals, but you'll find her office on the third floor with the
Plymouth Place admissions team. She will be available for all residents
when in the hospital and help make the transition back to Plymouth Place
as smooth as possible.
KiKi enjoys running and the outdoors, plus being with her family who all live
in the area. She is also very involved in her church where she volunteers
where needed. Each August, she goes to Haiti on a medical mission which
is very important to her.
Plymouth Place offers a full continuum of care under one roof, including
independent living and assisted living residences, memory care suites, Medicare-
certified short-term rehabilitation, and long-term skilled nursing. Our
person-centered approach to quality care allows us to tailor services and
programs to meet the evolving needs and preferences of our residents.
