Support to project (ex. Douro river inlet breakwaters)
Project an impact assessment of new inlet protection
breakwaters. This included quite innovative solutions
which were awarded with Secil Prize 2009 (the most
relevant engineering prize in Portugal)
Support to project (ex. new Lisbon port containers terminal)
Goal: Receive ship containers with a capacity of 8,000 TEU reaching about 352
meters long, 43 meters mouth and 14.5 meters draft
HIDROMOD is responsible for all the modelling studies necessary to support both the engineering and the
environmental impact assessment studies. This includes all the aspects associated with the wave climate,
hydrodynamics and transport processes, including the assessment of the channel maintenance conditions,
potential impacts associated with the dredging works and the suitability of the places selected to dispose the
dredged material.

Basically it means to take the most advantage of the available technology (modelling and data
management) to improve the knowledge about the systems and, by this way, take more
informed actions, adopt more safe and efficient procedures and contribute to improve
environment while saving money.
Optimizing the Operation and Management Trough Modelling,
Data Mining and Machine Learning
What does this mean?
What is the challenge
With the growing investments in telemetry and monitoring it is being generated huge amounts of
data that requires innovative approaches to be properly used in benefit of the organizations.
Data and information are two quite different things and having data does not mean having
information…
Adopt a preventive attitude
Making a wider use of these advanced modelling and data management tools helps to move
the focus to prevention and knowledge instead of the traditional reactive approaches
The improvement in the systems intelligence enables to automatically detect anomalies,
establish cause-effect relations and support to early warning
If the causes are not properly assessed the answers may not be the most
proper and/or the most efficient…

AQUASAFE an easy to use tool to accomplish these goals
The AQUASAFE server stores and indexes internally generated
system data (models), or through external links (Scada systems,
FTP, Open DAP, etc.). Apart from this distributor role, it also
schedules tasks, such as running models, creating reports, etc.
AQUASAFE was distinguished by IWA which attributed it the Honour Award for
the Operations & Management Category of the 2012 IWA Project Innovation Awards.

Consumer
Use the models as diagnostic, forecast and operational tools
Follow the water paths from the origin to the consumer
Improve: Water sources control Operational monitoring Preventive actions Corrective actions
Use knowledge and the extended capabilities to link events to the causes act in the source of the problems, anticipate the probability of failure
Use improved data analysis tools to increase your system knowledge
Same concepts applies to wastewater

Benefits
AQUASAFE may help to:
Improve and optimize monitoring programs (water sources, water discharges, urban networks…),
Properly assess the effectiveness (or need) of additional water treatments,
Reduce water losses,
Optimize energy,
Keep running warning/alert systems (beach water quality, leakages, anomalous parameters, …),
Derive Key Performance Indicators,
…
Taking the example of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area
Discharges in the sea benefits of advection/diffusion and of low residence time
Two quite different areas: • the estuary (with water residence
times from days to weeks) • The coast
Is there a need for secondary treatment
in the coastal area or removing nutrients
in the estuary?

Solution designed in the early eighties, entered into function in the nineties. It was based on a long trunk sewer (25 km) a preliminary treatment plant and a 2.9km submarine outfall with 2*400m diffusers.
However the publication of the UWWT Directive came to impose secondary treatment unless it may be demonstrated that there was no benefit.
A derogation of the secondary treatment was accorded in
2000 based on intensive monitoring and modelling studies.

Secondary treatment is mandatory by law!!

To answer this question a monitoring program supported by data and a
biogeochemical model was implemented considering all the loads.
Is there a need to remove nutrients?

After all…
More than 100 million euros of initial investment were saved,
More than 20 million/year of exploitation costs were saved,
None of that money would be used to protect the environment. Most would be used
just to produce CO2 …
16:31 25
Nutrients removal would have no benefit!!!
Secondary treatment has been adopted

Note
The success of all these tools and procedures depends on its capability to answer to
the real problems of operation and management
In this perspective it is of prime importance to gather as much of experiences as
possible in the requirements definitions
