Communication-intensive exploratory user experiences
Much more than just ”looking for information”
Learning, investigating, comparing, discovering, makingdecisions...
Infosuasive: aimed at informing but also at persuading, promoting, attracting, engaging...
Example (1)
A tourist willing to understand what is worth visiting in a couple of days inBrittany, without spending too much time for driving.
Example (2)
A prospective bachelor student interested in computer science trying tofigure out what these strange terms like ”data mining” and ”HCI” actuallymean, and if attending a certain course does not require ”too much mathstuff”!

Problematic issues
A traditional hierarchy of pages and hyperlinks cannot cope with theamount of information in large websites:
1 Problems with findability and sense making
2 Interesting contents is buried under levels and levels of navigation
3 Information overload prevent users from forming their own idea aboutthe website coverage
Search and semantic organization of data provide opportunity to enhanceuser experiences, but lack strategy for presenting information in a effectiveway for communicative purposes
Dry list of results (without ad-hoc explanatory content for the user)usually provided
Excessive freedom in exploration may make the user lose the intendedfocus of the application.

In SEARCH of a solution
A framework of design and implementation patterns for seamlessintegration of communication-oriented information architecture andsemantic search spaces:
Pre-structured (ad-hoc) contents + semantic faceted search
High expressive power: semantic relationshis plus logical combinationof filters (AND, OR, NOT)
intuitive interaction and visualization features for enanching sensemaking
My project at IRISA: RIALIS
Rich Internet Applications for Logical Information Systems
A modular toolbox for communication-intensive web applicationsbased on Camelis 2 as search server and Google Web Toolkit forthe AJAX-enabled interface

A navigation scenario (1)
An exemplificative scenario of usage
A student has to write an essay on the role of horses in art among thecenturies. For the purpose of finding interesting information, she visits an art gallerywebsite powered by RIALIS.

Conclusions and future works
Two worlds, one common vision:
Knowledge management
Using the expressive power ofsematic web and semanticfaceted search for adaptivereshaping of informationarchitectures according to theuser wishes (as in akaleidoscope!)
User experience design
Turning the web of data backagain into an highlycommunicative web ofinformation thanks tointroductive contents, suggested explorations andinteractive visualizations.
The next steps:
A first version of RIALIS will be available in the next months
Additional features: advanced visualizations (thematic maps, charts, etc.), multifaceted semantic relationships...
