TOURS & DAY HIKES (Tours Clients) 2019 Private Guided Service We have a variety of hikes and tours throughout the Huaraz and Cordillera Blanca offering options from easy tours or short hikes to hard full day hikes, all with spectacular scenery. Enjoy the grand Cordillera Blanca mountain scenery, crystal blue lakes, local village and friendly people at your own pace in the company of your private Peruvian Andes Adventures guide & driver. Most of our hikes and tours depart Huaraz early morning (around 07:30am to 08:00am) to allow you to take advantage of the (generally) morning nice clear skies offering the clearest mountain views before the afternoon warm haze descends over the mountain tops. Note 1: Hike grading and walking times are average estimates only for people of average to good fitness. Some people will be faster and others will find it more difficult and be slower. The effects of altitude do make hiking much harder than a similar hike closer to sea level and different people adjust to the altitude in a different timeframe. Note 2: Most hiking options in the Cordillera Blanca should be considered to be physically demanding owing to the altitude and the mountainous nature of the terrain. There are very few flat hiking options and trails on some hikes are steep both ascending and descending and can be slippery & rocky in places. We can advise which hikes would be suitable for you having regard to your level of fitness and the distance & length of time that you would feel comfortable hiking in the day. Note 4: GUIDE Your guide for the day will be an ENGLISH SPEAKING tour guide unless you advise that a Spanish speaking guide would be ok for you. Please note that these guides have studied English at a language institute but as English is not their native language and they only have the opportunity to converse in English for around three months of the year, they speak basic school English. Note 5: Day hike prices include guide, private transport (taxi or minivan), packed lunch (with sandwich, fruit, chocolate, dried fruit & nuts, juice) or a snack for short hikes and entrance fees. Testimonial from Ethel & Charlie of Scotland. They stayed in Morales Guesthouse in Huaraz and did 12 day Hikes and Tours Thank you for a great time in Huaraz. from the 1st email request until Paul took us to the airport in Lima we received first class service with everything going to plan. The packed lunches were great and kept us going through the day. All the guides were very knowledgeable & had a good command of English. The day hikes were most enjoyable with

amazing scenery & all the guides were patient while we took countless photos. Keep up the good work. We would have no hesitation to book with you again. I will recommend your company to some friends.

Dr Stephen Murray from the UK did a series of day hikes ‘ I spent a week with Peruvian Andes Adventures staying at their hostel and walking each day with a guide, sometimes on my own and sometimes as part of a group. I wanted to sample their day treks and see some of the more scenic areas within reach of Huaraz. I had a fantastic week . The scenery and mountains were unforgettable –definitely worth coming back for more . The day trips take you right in among some of the highest mountains in Peru [and in S America] including Huascaran and left me awe struck with the rugged beauty of the area –Scotland will never be quite the same again !Finally a word about Eli Morales and the other staff including the guides. This a family business and runs efficiently and courteously. I cannot speak highly enough of their professionalism, reliability, friendliness and willingness to impart local knowledge. Not to mention Eli’s invaluable help when problems cropped up with my flight back from Alta to Lima .’

Elena from the USA said: We not only enjoyed our hikes but learned a lot about flora & fauna and local customs from our guide Eli

Paula & Jason from the UK did 6 day hikes: Anne and Eli, I just wanted to drop you both a quick note to say thank you for our time in Huaraz. The organisation couldn't have been easier with you taking care of everything door to door and the setting of the town and the daily walks were just fantastic. Eli, thank you for being a great and patient guide to us and we will very fondly remember our time in Huaraz and recommend your services should any of our friends or colleagues ever be planning to come to Peru. Thanks again, Paula and Jason CORDILLERA NEGRA HIKE Easy Half Day Hike or Tour by Car A delightful easy hike which offers spectacular views over the entire range of the snow capped Cordillera Blanca. This is a good option for your first day hike in Huaraz. First we travel on a new paved road which winds it way up through the many villages hidden on the valleys and on the hillsides of the dry Cordillera Negra. This area has a climate that is extremely well suited for the cultivation of grain crops and it is the main production area for wheat, barley and oats in the Huaraz district. After an hour we arrive at a pass Punta Callan at 4225m from where there are unequalled views across the wide valley Callejon de Huaylas to the peaks, glaciers and valleys of the Cordillera Blanca. It is also possible to glimpse the coast and ocean from the other side of the pass. We start hiking from here, easily following local village trails all the way down hill, passing by traditional village houses and farms and can enjoy seeing the local traditional way of life. In July and August it is harvest time and everyone is busy harvesting and gathering crops. It is an easy 2 hour walk down to a village where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Huaraz. For those not wishing to hike, we can take the car to the saddle where we can appreciate the amazing views of the Cordillera Blanca mountains, of Huaraz and also out to the Pacific coast and then return to Huaraz.

Marian Village & is not steep. From the village plaza there is an amazing view of the massive snow covered mountain of Ranrapalca. If you feel taking a short climb we can climb up half an hour to the top of a small hill where we have fantastic views of Huaraz and many mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, the highest being Huascaran. On the return from Marian to Huaraz we follow an ancient Inca stone walled pathway and weave through narrow lanes passing by traditional local homes, small farms and trees and we have a glimpse of the traditional way of life. WILCAHUAIN RUINS Easy to Moderate Hike or Tour by Car

Wilkawain Ruins

The Pre – Inca Wilcahuain archaeological site is a 7 km walk starting from Huaraz following a lovely route passing small villages, farmland, green fields and graceful trees.. The ruins date back to about 600-900 AD and the war faring & civilized Wari Empire . The main 3 story building was the central temple and it is surrounded by smaller constructions that housed the mummies of the Wari ancestors. The building is roofed with massive stone slabs and contains a complicated system of ventilation ducts. You will marvel at how they managed to lift the massive stone slabs that form the roofs and doorways into place without the aid of modern technology and machinery. From the ruins a taxi back to Huaraz Wilkawain Ruins are closed on Mondays Departs Huaraz 08:00 Return Huaraz 13:00 Huaraz altitude = 3070m Hike starts at 3070m Maximum altitude reached hiking = 3400m at Wilkahuain Price 2019: 1 person US$173 2 people: US$102 each 3 people: US$84 each 4 people: US$68 each 5 people: US$58 each 6 people: US$51 each Includes guide, snack, transport & entrance fee to ruins. Cordillera Negra to arrive at Chiwipampa (3050m). We start hiking from here, climbing steadily following a trail that passes through several small highland farming villages where the local people continue to wear the colourful highland clothing and farm in the traditional manner. We pass by many fields of wheat, barley, beans and quinoa. After two hours hiking we come to the pretty lake Wilcacocha at 3700m where we usually see a lot of Andean ducks and sometimes also geese. The highlight of the hike is the amazing views that we have across to the length of Cordillera Blanca mountains directly opposite us across the Callejon de Huaylas valley. Following a picnic lunch we descend for about half an hour where we meet our vehicle and drive back to Huaraz Departs Huaraz 08:00 Return Huaraz 13:00 Hike starts at 3050m Maximum altitude reached hiking = 3700m at Wilcacocha

This is an easier option for a day hike, and there are few other places in the Cordillera Blanca where you can be so close to the ice.

The Llaca Valley is a narrow valley with impressive rock walls, and this is where the Peru mountain guides come to practice rock climbing. The day starts with about one hour 20 minute drive into the impressive Llaca valley. Tour Option: From the end of the road where the mountain guides Refugio is we have a short 10 minute hike to a view point from where we see the large Ranrapalca Glacier Lake with the glacier tumbling into the head of the lake. If you want to walk further there is the option to walk around the side of the lake Hiking Option: After passing through the national park control gate, we carry on driving for about 10 minutes to 4200m. Our hike then starts, following a trail not too steeply up valley next to the Llaca River passing through areas on pretty wild flowers and ancient quenual trees. After about an hour we come to the base of the terminal moraine wall which we climb up more steeply on a zig zag trail for 30 minutes to reach the top. From the top of the moraine we are treated to awesome views of the large Ranrapalca Glacier lake and the glacier at the head of the lake. We can continue hiking around the side of the lake for 30 minutes more to the top of the lake which makes a nice lunch spot. About 3 hours hiking time up & back For both options: Return back the same way and walk down the valley until we come to the Llaca Refugio which is the training base for the Peruvian mountain guides. Our vehicle will be waiting for us there and we return to Huaraz a different way through the Cojup Valley, driving down through the villages of Llupa and Unchus. The lake level is controlled by gates at the outlet of the lake to minimise the risk of avalanche into the lake causing a “flash” flood down the valley. The day starts with travel with our private transport first through the village of Macashca and then onto the Quebrada Rajucolta and to the entry to the National Park where we leave the vehicle and pass through the park entry gate (4050m). It is around 1½ drive and the road to the entrance is a dirt road and can be rough in places so the driver will go slowly. From the gate we have an easy almost flat hike of around 2 ½ hours up to the lake (4271m) passing through stands of ancient Quenual trees and pretty blue lupins. There are also a lot of cattle belonging to local farmers grazing. We rest at the lake to enjoy the views before returning to the car & back to Huaraz

We start with a short car ride of 10 minutes to the gateway to Huaraz at Tacllan at 3100m. From here we have a gradual climb with some short steeper sections for about 1 ½ to 2 hours to reach the top of the crest from where we will be treated to incredible open views of Huaraz and the surrounding mountains. We then wander along the undulating ridge line through small farm holdings where we often meet friendly local people working on their farms who always great us with a happy smile & often stop to chat with us. Along the way we will stop to enjoy a delicious picnic lunch while taking in the massive views. We eventually reach a saddle with a high point of 3750m from where we will descend and return back to Huaraz. MACASHCA HILL WALK Day Hike (Moderate to Hard) You will probably not find information about this in the books. It is a lovely but physically demanding climb up into the hills directly behind Huaraz. The trip starts with a short car journey (around ½ hour into the Macashca Valley close to Huaraz). You initially walk up quite steeply for around 1 hour on a grassy hillside, then reach a wide open grassy ridge which you follow easily to a saddle at 4200m. . From the ridge and the saddle are fantastic views over Huaraz, across to the snowcapped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca and Huascaran (the highest mountain in Peru) and also the Cordillera Negra.. The walk descends a long way with open views all the way to finish in Huaraz. First we drive for an hour from Huaraz to the village of Pashpa (3900m) which is the entrance to the climbing area of the Ishinca Valley. We start hiking steadily upward (but never steep) first crossing open farmland with amazing views of the mountains Huascaran, Huandoy, Copa and Vallunaraju. After about an hour we enter an area of ancient Quenual Forest with their low hanging branches and strange peeling bark. The trail steepens here and we continue climbing up through the forest next to a small stream, finally climbing up onto a grass covered moraine wall where we are surprised to come across a beautiful small blue lake at the base of Urus mountain, surrounded by high vertical rock walls (4400m). About 3 hours to 3 ½ hours to the lake. We enjoy a relaxing lunch at the lake before descending back to Pashpa on a good trail for 2 to 2 ½ hours and return to Huaraz. LAGUNA SHALLAP Day Hike (Moderate, long day) Laguna Shallap is a beautiful high glacial lake at the head of a remote valley in the Cordillera Blanca close to Huaraz. Not many tourists know of this hike, and apart from the local people there are very few other people about. While it is a fairly easy walk (not steep) to the lake, it is a long day and we would only recommend this hike for fitter people or those who will enjoy a long day out in the mountains. First we drive for 1½ hours, climbing steadily on a mountain road behind Huaraz, passing through the busy farming villages of Ichoca, Coyllur and finally coming to the remote settlement of Jancu at the end of the road. The farming people here are typically friendly and welcoming and many only speak Quechua, the language of the Incas. The walk to the lake is an easy wander up to a beautiful wide valley where cattle and horses graze. Only the last 20 minutes is steeper when we climb over the terminal moraine wall on a good path to the lake, altitude 4250m. The lake is tucked at the foot of the giant mountains San Juan, Tumarinaraju and Huanstán and the glacier fields from the mountains flow into the lake. About 6 hours walking from the car to the lake and return to the car. Some people find this a long day with the driving time included.

We take the car from Huaraz to Pitec, driving through the attractive farming settlements of Unchus and Llupa (one hour drive). From Pitec (3850m) there is a steady continuous and steep climb on a dirt path to the hidden Laguna Churup (4450m), a beautiful turquoise mountain lake below Nevada Churup (5493m). The final 100m to the lake is climbing up a steep rock gully which less fit people may find difficult. Allow 4 to 5 hours walk from Pitec to the lake and return to the car. This is a demanding hike due to the final rock scramble and it a better option for your second day hike in Huaraz after you have already had a little time to acclimatise.

Travel by our private vehicle car from Huaraz past the beautiful Llanganuco Lakes and then to Cebollapampa (3850m) which is the starting point to climb Pisco. (2 ½ hours drive). You start the walk by following the valley for some 40 minutes, then climb continuously on a zig zag track for about 2 hour 40 minutes to Laguna 69, a beautiful lake of the most brilliant blue colour (4500m). The lake is surrounded by the mountains Chacrarju and Pisco which leave reflections on the lake. On the return walk you look directly towards the mountains Huascaran, Chopicalqui and Yanapaccha. The hike from Cebollapampa to Laguna 69 & return is about 5 ½ hours. On the car journey we stop at the beautiful turquoise and light blue twin lakes of Llanganuco - one lake female and one lake male. The lakes lie between the mountains of Huascaran and Huandoy and are surrounded by groves of ancient quenual trees. This is a long & tiring day & should not be considered suitable for your first day hike at high altitude, but is a good second or third day hike option

We start off hiking on a wide grassy path, climbing steadily upwards through farmland with views of the surrounding mountains and across to the adjacent Cordillera Negra. We often come across local people tending their cows and sheep and they will be friendly and greet us as we pass. We then leave the path and climb more steeply on a dirt path through tussock grass covered hillside and later over some rock until we pop over the lip of a rock wall to be surprised by the bright blue lake. From here we have excellent close views of Vallunaraju. There is an option to keep climbing up across the rock for those with a lot of energy. On the return if we still have time we can visit the ruins of Wilkawain.

PUYA RAYMONDI & MOUNTAIN VIEWS Unique Tour to Peruvian Andes Adventures Tour by Car The Puya Raymondi is a plant that grows in the higher places of Peru only. It is of the Bromeliacea family and it is a very interesting plant because it flowers just once in its life and it might have at least 20,000 flowers. The Puya Raymondi is pollinated by hummingbirds. Our unique day tour by private car combines spectacular mountain views with a visit to an expansive hillside completely covered by an estimated 5000 of the intriguing Puya Raymoni plants. The area we visit is relatively unknown & you are certain to be able to enjoy your day and wander among the many Puyas in solitude. We start the day by following a new paved road for 40 minutes, passing by small villages & farms ascending the dry mountain range of the Cordillera Negra to arrive at the top of the pass Punta Callan at 4225m. The Cordillera Negra is the principal agricultural zone of the Huaraz area and is known as The Wheat Bowl of Huaraz because the dry conditions are ideal for the growing & harvest of wheat. From the pass there are amazing views of almost the entire length of the snow capped Cordillera Blanca mountain range, and you can see all the highest mountains in the chain, divided by narrow steep walled valleys. We also look down the wide valley Callejon de Huaylas dissected by the Rio Santa river and to the sprawling city of Huaraz. From the pass we can also see over to the Pacific Coast far below.

View from the Pass Thousands of Puyas We then turn onto a dirt road which we follow for about a hour and a half, continuing to admire the mountain views during the journey, passing through the village of Coris and then through farmland with many sheep grazing & scattered Andean farmers houses. Finally we arrive at Llacguawasi where we are amazed by the sight of thousands of Puya Raymondi plants, some in flower with their towering flower spikes scarred across the hillside. The plants grow right to the side of the road so we do not need to walk far to admire these unique plants unique to only these small pockets in the Peruvian Andes, or if you want you can take a long hike across the hillside. We enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Huaraz. PRIVATE TOUR BY CAR TO ARCHEOLOGICAL RUINS OF CHAVIN de HUANTAR The archaeological site is situated to the south east of Huaraz, a journey of 3 hours by car one way. Our day begins with a scenic road journey on a newly paved road winding our way to the top of a high mountain pass and through a tunnel, before descending to the township of Chavin. The ruins of Chavin are dated between 800-200 BC, developed by a powerful religious sect which had a great influence over the other cultures in different parts of Peru, long before the Inca Culture become established. The great temple is comprised of immense stones, and there are large galleries where the Chavin priests consulted and worshipped their Gods, performing rituals and sacrificial ceremonies. The most interesting parts of the site were built underground in an exceptional feat of 3000 year old engineering with a series of underground chambers, ventilation ducts and water canals. It is incomprehensible how an ancient civilization was able to construct these immense buildings without the aid of modern tools and machinery. Chavin Ruins are closed on Mondays Departs Huaraz 07:00 Return Huaraz 18:00

JANCOPAMPA RUINS AND WATERFALL Tour by Car with a Short Walk A tour into a remote valley very close to the mountains to visit some ancient pre-Inca Ruins and then a short hike up to a delightful waterfall hidden among the trees. We depart Huaraz in our private vehicle taking the road towards the airport at Anta. We turn off and follow a road first passing through the village of Parihuanca and then continuing winding up towards the mountains through interesting farmland and small villages. We then reach a surprising large green flat pampa high in the mountains where we have close views of the mountains Copa, Urus, Vallunaraju and more. From the end of the road we have a short 30 minute hike up to the cool hidden waterfall. There are some enterprising local people here who offer a pony ride up to the waterfall if you do not feel like walking. On the return we either walk down or take the car to the interesting ruins on Jancopampa. You may even decide to stop and buy a roast potato snack from the lady who has set up a small still here. These ruins date from the ancient Wari Culture who were a very advanced and war faring civilization. They had a substantial warrior base established in Jancopampa with a temple, houses and extensive farming producing food for other villages and their armies. Inside the temple ruins you will be left wondering how they managed to place the enormous rocks into the ceiling of the building with out aid of modern machinery. We will have a relaxing lunch in the sun on the wide grass field near the ruins and then return to Huaraz. On the return trip you may decide to visit the thermal baths of Monterray for a dip in the hot baths! Departs Huaraz 08:00 Return Huaraz 14:00

Caraz Plaza Del Armas Caraz Market On the return towards Huaraz we stop to visit the memorial to the people of Yungay. The town of Yungay was completely destroyed in the earthquake of 31 May 1970. The earthquake caused a massive avalanche of rock and ice from the west wall of Huascaran which reached devastating speeds as it dropped over 3 vertical kms on it’s way to Yungay 14kms away. The town and almost all it’s 20,000 inhabitants were buried. The earthquake also killed about half of the total population of Huaraz. Now the site of Yungay is marked by an enormous white statute of Christ on a hill overlooking where the village used to be. The large crack on the West Face of Huascaran where the avalanche started from can still be seen clearly. The site is now a memorial to the thousands who perished there & now lie beneath your feet, with flower gardens and monuments.

Yungay with Huascarn Behind Yungay Memorial We continue the tour first stopping in the village of Carhuas to savour the delicious ice creams that are a specialty of this village then on to Chancos Village where there are some inviting thermal springs hot baths.
