This has been one of the most heartwarming issues I've worked on yet. Truth be told, I've been misty-eyed from the first image placed on the page to the very last – and hopefully successful – spell-check.

Perhaps I've been grieving all the rites of passage stolen from this graduating class. Maybe I'm senti-mentally fast-forwarding to my own kids' graduation days. (Forgive me: go Class of 2026!) Or maybe, just maybe, it's pure chagrin that I possessed nowhere near the drive, ambition and future-mindedness that these young people possess!

I'd say it's all of the above – and this process has been an honor. This special edition is for YOU. Congratula-tions to each and every one of you. I admire you all.

I leave you with an all-time favorite from an all-time favorite. . .

“You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams.

You were born with greatness. You were born with wings.

You are not meant for crawling, so don’t.You have wings.

With more than 30 years of experi-ence, she is thrilled to be named Bid-deford High School’s Class of 2020’s official commencement photographer. “This year is particularly special as the seniors’ final school months had to change dramatically.”

A Positive Outlook from Robbie Sandersby Robbie Sanders

These are trying times, no doubt about it. From this global pandemic, there are missed graduations, proms, and rights of passage; everyone is sacrificing something. This sucks, but it sucks for everyone. Eventually, there will be a day when we can go outside and be with one another again. Eventually, every restaurant will have at least a 2-hour wait, every concert or play will sell out, tourism will boom again, every high school sporting event will be packed and fans will be cheering louder than ever before, and we will be able to shake hands, hold hands, and hug one another again. In order for that day to come everyone needs to do their part, and stay home. We have all this wonderful technology, FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, and more that I do not know the name of nor do I know how to use properly. Let’s put all of that technology to good use!

And to my seniors, my friends, we are all sad that graduation will not be the same as when our older siblings graduated, nor will it be the same as the last three classes we watched graduate. Is that really sad? Yes! I am just as sad as you are, but please remember that this is a global pandemic, this is not just Kennebunk, this is not just Maine. There are hundreds of thousands of high school seniors that are not getting their graduation or prom. Many schools have canceled graduation altogether. So please, appreciate that our teachers and administrators genuinely care about us and want to give us everything they can and make graduation as normal as possible. We do not know what the CDC will recommend for us on June 7th, but we will have some type of graduation that will involve caps and gowns, a well-earned diploma, friends, parents, and lots of loud cheering. There is so much about this global pandemic that is beyond our control. I know it’s hard but we need to try to look on the bright side because that will help everybody. This also means that when we have a class reunion, people will actually show up and it will be a blast.

We are in the middle of making history. Some day, we will all be able to tell our families about the time that we were quarantined. Enjoy this time, become closer with your families. Break out an old favorite board game, re-discover reading. Go for walks, runs, bike rides – all while maintaining at least a six-foot distance from others. When this is all over – and it will be – we will never take going to school for granted again, we will all appreciate our friends much more than we did before. Hopefully, people will be much kinder to one another. Remember that while spirit week and school may be canceled, friendships are not canceled, relationships are not canceled, hope and love are not canceled. We must stay at home right now and not be with friends, but we can be together while being apart. Everyone plays a role in this pandemic, we all need to do our part. But just keep thinking of the day when we can physically be together again because that will be a great day.

The Murray Family

Dear Graduates,In September of 2016, you entered Kennebunk High

School in the midst of a renovation. You were wonder-ing whether you would be able to find your way around the building and the portables, not to mention whether you would have lunch and advisory with your friends. Suddenly, it’s June 7, 2020, and you’re about to take the next step out into the world.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the pandemic. No one could have ever predicted that your senior year would end this way. Your flexibility, patience, and tenac-ity throughout the past few months have not gone un-noticed. In the midst of these uncertain times, you have given the communities of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel something to celebrate.

These towns have helped shape who you are. As you go out into the world, you will find that you are well prepared and that you know right from wrong. This excellent preparation is a testimony to your families, community members, and the faculty and staff in our district’s schools. Always remember that we will be here for you, ready to share in your successes and to offer support as needed.

Your teachers have held you to high standards. It was not enough for you to memorize facts; you had to apply those facts, analyze information, evaluate sources, con-duct experiments, and solve problems. Through music, art and theater, you held a mirror up to our society and made us reflect on real issues. Through clubs and activi-ties, you have demonstrated that you are ready to not only discuss world issues, but to be part of the solution when it comes to resolving differences and improving the lives of all people. The world is already a better place because you are in it.

The future is yours with all its challenges and oppor-tunities. Each of you will make a difference in your own way. It has been an honor and a privilege to share your journey through Kennebunk High School.

With love and pride,

My dad told me: don’t be afraid to change your mind. You may think you’ve got it all figured out — your choice of college or major or profession or future mate. Nothing is written in stone. Keep your options open and let life happen and embrace the change. Guess what? Sixty years later I realize how true his words were and still are.

What do you want to be doing in five years?I want to be underwater, protecting my country by serving in the U.S.

Navy as a Torpedoman’s Mate. After that, nothing for sure, so I don’t completely know what I will be doing in five years. I do know, however, that I will be helping people in any way I can. That’s all I ever wanted to do – help and protect people – and in five years I will be doing just that.

What will I be doing in ten years? Well, I don’t know the answer to that question quite yet, but I have options. I signed a nine-year contract with the Navy, so I don’t know if I’ll still be in the Navy in ten years – unless I re-enlist and make the Navy my career. But there are two other paths I want to take: One is to go to college when I retire from the Navy and get a masters in criminology, then go into the Secret Service. The other is to go to a community college and get my bachelors in criminology, then become state trooper.

In twenty years what do I want to be doing? I never really thought about what I want to be doing in twenty years. But I have a feeling that I will be doing something to help and protect people so they can live their best lives, and live their lives to the fullest. I want to be doing something to inspire the people that I help and protect, to do whatever they can do to make others feel safe. I want to be doing something that will be putting the world back together, piece-by-piece, since there are so many people tearing apart this world.

Overall, I just want to help, even though I might not be the smartest kid or the best student. I think that’s what all people should be doing. We need to put our own problems last because someone will always have it worse than you.

Arriving at TNS midway through his junior year, Caleb was immediately welcomed and hailed as an inspiring musician, charismatic peer leader and passionate BMXer. Classmates find him witty, irrev-erent and “super kind.” As a member of the first Climate Change class to pair with the Kennebunk Energy Committee, Caleb enjoyed working on the Global Climate

Change Initiative. Caleb intends to take a gap year “working and exploring.”

During his senior year, Wyatt mastered carpentry and building “things,” includ-ing the restoration of an old motorcycle and transmission. He is recognized by teachers and students as being meticu-lously organized and pragmatic, traits that should serve him well at Southern Maine Community College this fall. Over his four years at TNS, Wyatt made a literary pilgrimage to England, partici-pated in post-hurricane relief efforts in Florida and South Carolina, and served

as a delegate to Maine Model United Nations.

The New School community will miss Sam’s imagination, his “aww shucks” smile, his huge heart and a “goofiness that sparks a smile on everyone’s face.” Considered to be a loyal friend, Sam is also an avid gamer and takes personal pride in leading his beginner classmates to numerous vic-tories in Fortnite. During four years at TNS, he grew significantly as an artist and spent senior year creating a story set in a fan-tasy world enhanced by his own wonderful works of art. He is taking next semester off and plans to go to college once Covid-19

becomes less of a factor.

The New School graduates eight dynamic seniors • “We are so proud to see them ready to fly.”

A founding member of Dungeons and Dragons campaigns held on Wednes-day afternoons, Ian also hosted numer-ous school events during his years at TNS. Students and faculty appreciate his quiet, thoughtful leadership and revel in his quirky sense of humor. A teacher describes Ian as “an independent, hard-working student who puts his all into schoolwork and our community.” Future plans include attending Southern Maine

Community College, starting in September.

Claire Brown

As a competitive ice skater, Claire’s affinity for athletics prompted her to start an Outing Club at TNS for her senior project. She will pursue her love of outdoor studies and photography next year at Hampshire College, and also plans to skate the Five Colleges Interchange. Fellow students describe Claire as having great enthusiasm for fun. Teachers note her generosity and compassion. She literally gave the shirt off her back to the child of a New

School teacher during a fire evacu-ation at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts this past winter.

Devon arrived at TNS with a passion for draw-ing and illustration. As an advocate for even the smallest creatures in the ecosystem, he crafted a book for his senior project by faithfully rendering illustrations of arthropods. Teachers and students alike call Devon as an “old soul who will probably narrate his own documentary someday.” During his years at TNS, he spent countless hours finding ways to share his de-

signs and art with others, and looks forward to marketing and selling his artwork next year.

JasonDaleyAfter entering TNS two years ago, Jason be-came the school’s part-time philosopher and movie critic. One of his greatest achievements, he boasts, is holding the record for “most amount of time easily distracting” Social Stud-ies teacher Brad Lopes. Keenly empathetic, Jason brings smiles to all and works to make sure his peers and teachers are “doing okay in our community.” Next fall he will attend the

University of Maine, Farmington, to pursue a major in philosophy.

An aficionado and instigator of numerous games (Dungeons and Dragons, Mafia, to name two), Nate will tap his inner talent “of making everything a game” when he enters a game design program at Cham-plain College this fall. He is considered a gifted actor and “genuine human being” by his classmates. Nate’s sense of adven-ture coupled with his thoughtful nature made him a dynamic leader in TNS com-

To the Class of 2020:I sat down to write a letter. I

could only write a poem. I want-ed to keep it simple. I certainly wanted to say, “Congratulations on your success!” and “You have persevered and completed your high school journey despite the obstacles presented by a global pandemic.” I didn’t know what else to say to you, though, and I didn’t know exactly how to say it. Words are difficult tools to work with sometimes. I real-ized that I could not say what I wanted to say to you in a letter. Instead, here is a poem in your honor.

We are so proud of you, Alden!Love, Mom, Dad & Finn

by Lily McMahonOn Friday the 13th, I laughed with my class as Mr. Moody told

us that he thought, “this is our last day of school for the year. ” The idea seemed absurd. Sure, this Corona thing seemed pretty serious, but it was only March. There was no way. When he said, “See you all next year,” as the final bell of the day rang, I laughed, packed my bags, and said, “See you on Monday, Mr. Moody.” Flash forward to last Wednesday morning and I woke up to find that his prediction was correct. I had my last day of physical high school on that Friday and didn’t even know it.

I am a planner. As I go to sleep each night, I mentally lay out my clothes. Down to the socks, I know exactly what I’ll be wearing the next day. My morning is down to a science: five minutes to shower, four minutes to get dressed, seven minutes for breakfast, three to make my coffee. I wake up each morning, knowing exactly how the next hour of my life will occur. I like the lack of surprises, no twists or turns, a strict routine that doesn’t change from day to day. I don’t particularly like surprises; if a test doesn’t have an outline, it is an instant source of stress for me. For me, life is better when it goes to plan. I want to know what’s going to happen next, to be one step ahead of whatever life throws at me.

We are now in an unprecedented time, new, terrifying headlines come out each day about the state of our world. New guidelines, what we can’t do, what’s safe and what is not, death rates growing by the day. I can’t help but feel helpless, watching from the sidelines as the life that I have become accustomed to crumbles before my eyes. I stopped looking at the news, as it made me far too upset. I recognize that I am in a good situation currently; I have a safe, stable home. We have food and resources; no one in my family is a health care or essential worker, so I don’t have to worry about them getting the virus. When I get upset about how the virus is affecting my life personally, I get frustrated with myself. Why should I be upset when so many people have it so much worse?

I had a plan for how my senior year was going to go: a Google doc filled with possible prom dresses, a Pinterest board dedicated to how I was going to decorate my graduation cap – my best friend and I have had a song we wanted to sing at class night since freshman year. Like my morning routine, I had visualized how the next four months of my life were meant to go.. A picture-perfect ending like I had grown up idolizing in movies with a group jump freeze-frame, and all. I now have had to cope with the fact that this will not happen. Jokes about graduation via zoom are beginning to seem less like jokes by the day. My plan seems more and more like a pipe dream. With the email that we are not returning to school like the nail in the coffin, my senior year is dead, and there is nothing I can do about it.

I try and occupy my time as much as I can. I’ve found about every possible craft in my house to do. Painting, polymer clay, Perler beads, friendship bracelets, embroidery, and drawing fill my days. I listen to music, mainly “The Muppet Movie” soundtrack. I read, and watch Netflix. I write things in the notes app of my phone; this article actu-ally started as a late-night word vomit. A theme that pops up in my late-night notes app sessions is that I wish I went into that last day of school on Friday knowing it was my last day. I had known we were mostly going to miss some school, but the idea of losing over three months did not cross my mind as a possibility. I would have treated that day a lot differently if I had known. I would have thanked my teachers, probably would have cried a bit, and I would have held the day with more weight. I would have tried to have the closure that I am now searching for. The last day of high school is something I have pictured in my mind for years, and that Friday was just that, a typical Friday, not the pinnacle of my education that I had planned.

There isn’t a nice way to tie up this article, I haven’t found the magic way to make this all not suck; it still does. For me, I think that recognizing that I’m allowed to be upset about the little things is im-portant. You’re allowed to be upset that you’re missing your prom, your graduation, your senior project, while still recognizing that they are “little” in the scheme of things. I didn’t get the senior year that I have planned, and while I’m not okay with that right now, someday I will be, and you will be too.

Sometimes it takes years to understand a teacher's impact. Only after I was an established music critic did I recall that my senior year English teacher, Mr. Carpenter, asked to borrow some albums . And, oh, by the way, could I also do a write-up for each album so he'd know what to listen to. Clearly, he saw some spark, some passion, in me. I ended up doing basically the same thing for the Boston Globe, Rolling Stone, the Boston Herald, Musician Magazine, and dozens of other publications.

Miss Apostolakos was my 7th and 8th grade English teacher. Don't worry about breaking down sentence parts, she taught me, worry about writing so people will want to read.

Years later I bumped into her. She had no idea what my career path had been, but said she read an article in a maga-zine recently and even before looking at the byline thought, "Dean did this." I still consider that one of the greatest com-pliments about my work.

I never went to college, I started working for a weekly paper right out of high school, so I can't stress enough what gifts those teachers gave me.

"The capital-T Truth is about life BEFORE death. It is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple aware-ness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over: 'This is water.'"

My graduation speechby Valerie Marier

I wasn’t overly nervous walking to the lectern on that sweltering June night 60 years ago in New Jersey. I spotted my two older brothers sitting right up front, several rows from where my parents and sister were, and thought, That’s so nice of Robert and Ross to sit nearby and offer support as I speak.

My Central High School principal, a sour little man who smiled once, if that, during my four years, had suggested my graduation speech should reflect on poet John Milton’s words, “They also serve who only stand and wait.”

I have no recollection what I said to my fellow graduates and their families watching me on stage. To this day I’m still not sure what Milton was talk-ing about. My only clear memory is looking out at my brothers, a mere 12 feet away.

Immediately after I said, “Welcome to our graduation….”, both began dabbing their sudden-ly-overflowing eyes and loudly honking their ap-parently runny noses into tablecloth-size hankies, clearly “overcome” with sibling emotion as their younger sister attempted valiantly to maintain composure. Their histrionics continued through my entire speech. I could have murdered them.

Revenge? In my own way. Following Milton’s advice, I stood aside and they waited a full cal-endar year before I introduced either to my cute college freshmen girlfriends.

Congratulations Brett Clark

Kennebunk silversmithcreates special graduation gift

“It felt like the right thing to do” by Valerie Marier

“The kids have missed so much this year – se-nior skip day, banquets, spirit week and prom,” says Kennebunk resident and noted silversmith George Gillman. “I wanted to give them some-thing so they’d know we are thinking of them.”

Having had two daughters graduate from Kennebunk High School several years ago, Gill-man recognized the sad differences for this year's seniors. He contacted advisers at both KHS and The New School, asking if he could donate a pair of earrings to all graduates. Then he went to work in his home studio on Fletcher Street.

“The earrings are made of sterling silver along with cultured pearls in shades of white, pink and peach, plus crystal beads for accent,” he says. Gillman decided on cultured pearls “because they are precious and timeless.”

His hope is that all the students will want the earrings, either for themselves or a loved one. He is currently crafted more than 75 but says, “I’ll keep making them until the end of June in case a student didn’t get a chance to respond and now realizes they want a pair.”

“I remember all the fun my daughters – and I – had during senior year, especially the last few

months,” Gillman says. “Making these earrings just felt like the right thing to do.”

Looking Backby Nathan Emmons

As I look back at the last 12 years, I think of all the great people that have really made this milestone come to an end, the next step, gradu-ating. Whether it was my friends, teachers, or my supportive com-munity, they all played a big role. If I look back on when I became a freshman at Kennebunk High School, I wasn’t prepared for the next four years. Freshman year went by very slowly, and I came to real-ize these would be the best years of my life inside of school and out.

While a freshman, my goal started out as “ graduating,” thinking that goal wasn’t challenging. Four years in high school was challeng-ing, however, whether it was completing midterms, SATs, finals, or participating in something as simple as a Spanish class. This work prepared me to go on with my future at Maine Maritime Academy. However, at the beginning of senior year, my peers were saying this year doesn’t count and I began to listen, but had I not tried, I may not have not been going forward with my dream which is becoming a Merchant Marine. Many people don’t see the big picture, which is how high school has been preparing us for the next leg of the journey or giving us hope to make it to the next milestone.

A huge accomplishment that was awarded to me while I was a senior was Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. This accom-plishment taught me to be a good person and to take risks if failure was a risk. My next milestone is graduating college and getting a job that I will enjoy. While people may see that as a challenge, I see it as a way to succeed in life. I want to thank my family, friends and the wonderful teachers who have built me up to where I am now. These next couple of years could have turned out differently if it wasn’t for their endless help and or support to the next journey in life . . .

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.Milton Berle

by Emily L’HeureuxI’m not here to pretend that I’m super mature or whatever. But

thinking about how incredibly stupid I was for the first 3 years of high school makes me want to make sure that no one repeats even, like, 11% of my mistakes. I have some advice, and most of it isn’t the stupid stuff you’ll find on Pinterest or blog websites about how you should use a planner. For the record, I never used a planner. I’m not gonna comment on whether or not that affected me because I think this article is incriminating enough.

GradesIf you care about your grades, freshman year is when you start

doing that. I’m serious. It’s a transition, so hit the ground running. If you’re potentially scrambling in later years, now you have a cushion, and your grades don’t completely tank. If you wanna not care about your last semester of senior year, you better hope you have the grades in previous years to back it up.

If you don’t care about your grades, but wanna pass, dope. But think about your priorities down the line. Do you want to get into college? A good college? Even less far down the line, do you want to be certain that you’ll pass a class? Riding the C train as far as it goes is awesome and valid, but it can be scary if you tank a final. But I see you, and I get it, and it’s chill.

If you don’t care about anything and just wanna get outta dodge, amen. But let’s be realistic here. It’s hard to live on the minute number of jobs you can get without a high school diploma these days. Look at how successful you would want to be, and how independent you want to be. If you’re cool with the risk, more power to you, but remember that you’re still an actual child and may not be cool with it down the line. High school sucks for all of the reasons that should make you want to work harder: to finish, and get the hell out.

ClassesNo matter what grade camp you’re in, no one’s gonna care even

a little bit the second you get out of here. In 10 years no one will care about any of it. They won’t care what your GPA was, where you went to college, how many AP and IB classes you took, or what you scored on a BS standardized test. Make the choices that will satisfy you and make you feel like you got what you wanted out of this experience. Pick classes that you like in high school- pick classes that will benefit you in the future. And for the love of GOD pick reasonable colleges that you actually like, if that’s even what you want to do. If you don’t know what you wanna be or what you wanna do, U of Chicago is not the place to be. If you don’t want to go to college, don’t go.

Don’t be afraid to take a gap year! Colleges really don’t actually care what you do with that time that much. If anyone has ever told you that, it’s fear mongering. Try to watch every video on YouTube, I dare you. In any case, Do what’s best for you, because you’re the one who has to sleep with it.

Don’t be afraid of switching classes, or overriding teacher recom-mendation if necessary- especially as an underclassman. If it’s not working, for any thousand reasons, switching classes could benefit you. Almost every roadblock put up to prevent you from doing this is to test how much you actually care about doing it. Advocate for yourself and getting the education that you need and deserve. That being said, about 99 times out of 100, your teacher will be acting in your best interests, so make sure you’re talking to them.

TeachersTalk to your teachers. They’re people too. Most of them. They

will get you in and out of opportunities based on how much they actually know how sick you are. They will help you if you commu-nicate with them. Most of the ones here will probably help you even if you don’t. But communicate anyways, because it makes things easier for everyone involved. Plus, a lot of them are like, super chill and stuff. Not to mention if you already talk to them and commu-nicate problems, they’ll probably give you some slack. Don’t abuse it, but take advantage if you need to. Your teachers are not scary, and if you think they hate you it’s probably because they just hate being alive sometimes. Who doesn’t?

Have a sense of humor and be friendly with the staff. All of the staff. With teachers, you can send a small amount of warranted snark their way, you can make jokes, and you can definitely stop emailing them like you’re talking to The Pope. Your boring, 1820s diplomat emails are doing no one any favors. I’m serious. If you’re asking a question and your email is more than 4 lines MAX, you’re doing something horribly, horribly wrong. If you can’t read it out loud without pauses, your teacher would probably rather read a book upside down.

Also, be kind to the other people that make this school actually function. Food staff, janitorial staff, secretaries, bus drivers, all of them. Have conversations with them and get to know them. They’re awesome people and your life would be hell at school without them.

ActivitiesTry going to a sporting event if you haven’t yet. If you’ve never

been, and feel like you’re not the type of person who would enjoy it, suck it up, find a friend, and just go. It might suck. But, y’know, what if it doesn’t? At least you’ll know for sure either way. If you’ve been to a game or two, maybe try the sports that get a little less fan section love. Everyone loves Friday night lights, but maybe go to a field hockey or volleyball game, or a swim/track meet, or maybe a golf thing(?), if you can even go to those.

If you’re really adamant about the sports thing, try a school event that isn’t sports. Our school is good at a lot of things, and that talent and dedication often goes unseen in terms of garnering

attention from the student body. Go to a debate meet, or a play, or a concert, or a film screening for the Femenist Club or the Civil Rights Team, or even just talk to your friends in mock trial and the science bowl about what they’re doing. Maybe you’ll find something that you actually enjoy doing.

Look. I’m about to get real enough that I might not be allowed to publish this part. You can ditch class sometimes. You can party sometimes. You can get zooted sometimes. You can do all the things that young people do. As a treat. But don’t go around ruining your life, chasing a feeling that will wait for you until you have job prospects and a working frontal lobe. Don’t waste all of this valuable time. You can waste some of it, everyone does, but don’t be an idiot.

ConclusionI think we all know at this point that these are not the best

years of our lives. If high school produced the best years of your life, your life is the problem. High school does go by quickly- and this is coming from someone who hated a whole lot of it. It kinda sucks, and for about 75% of it there was hardly a minute that I didn’t want to spend somewhere else. But it will get better, and I’m banking on the fact that I’ll forget most of it anyways. That being said, enjoy the parts that you’re supposed to enjoy. Enjoy the stupid stuff, like hearing the Halo theme coming from an overcrowded boys bathroom, or an atro-cious school meme page that makes one half-decent joke every 9 posts. Enjoy the not as stupid stuff, like the time that you spent with your friends do-ing all the things you love doing, and enjoy all of the other people that make this experi-ence a little bit more bearable and meaning-ful for you. Sometimes you’ll hate most of high school, and it’ll still end before you’re ready for it to. Make memories you’ll cher-ish, and burn out the rest.

And consider us-ing a planner.

“I’ve found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks. Fall forward. Every failed experiment is one step closer to success. You’ve got to take risks. You will fail at some point in your life. Accept it. You will lose. You will em-barrass yourself. You will suck at something. There is no doubt about it. Never be discouraged. Never look back. Give everything you’ve got. And when you fall throughout life, fall forward.”~ Denzel Washington, University of Pennsylva-nia address, 2011

Art by Anna York, KHS

. . . So, I’m left with the last thing that I sort of ignored as a topic. Hap-piness. I’m sure you have been told that this is the best time of your life. It may be. But if it’s true that this is the best time of your life, if you have already lived or are now living at this age the best years, or if the next few turn out to be the best, then you have my condolences. Because you'll want to remain here, stuck in these so-called best years, never maturing, wanting only to look, to feel and be the adolescent that whole industries are devoted to forcing you to remain.

One more flawless article of clothing, one more elaborate toy, the truly perfect diet, the harmless but necessary drug, the almost final elective sur-gery, the ultimate cosmetic—all designed to maintain hunger for stasis. While children are being eroticized into adults, adults are being exoticized into eternal juvenilia. I know that happiness has been the real, if covert, target of your labors here, your choices of companions, of the profession that you will enter. You deserve it and I want you to gain it, everybody should. But if that’s all you have on your mind, then you do have my sympathy, and if these are indeed the best years of your life, you do have my condolences because there is nothing, believe me, more satisfying, more gratifying than true adulthood. The adulthood that is the span of life before you. The process of becoming one is not inevitable. Its achievement is a difficult beauty, an intensely hard won glory, which commercial forces and cultural vapidity should not be permitted to deprive you of.

Now, if I can’t talk inspiringly and hopefully about the future or the past or the present and your responsibility to the present or happiness, you might be wondering why I showed up. If things are that dour, that tentative, you might ask yourself, what’s this got to do with me? What about my life? I didn’t ask to be born, as they say. I beg to differ with you. Yes, you did! In fact, you insisted upon it. It’s too easy, you know, too ordinary, too common to not be born. So your presence here on Earth is a very large part your doing.

So it is up to the self, that self that insisted on life that I want to speak to now—candidly—and tell you the truth that I have not really been clearheaded about, the world I have described to you, the one you are inheriting. All my ruminations about the future, the past, responsibility, happiness are really about my generation, not yours. My generation's profligacy, my generation's heedlessness and denial, its frail ego that required endless draughts of power juice and repeated images of weakness in others in order to prop up our own illusion of strength, more and more self congratulation while we sell you more and more games and images of death as entertainment. In short, the palm I was reading wasn’t yours, it was the splayed hand of my own generation and I know no generation has a complete grip on the imagination and work of the next one, not mine and not your parents’, not if you refuse to let it be so. You don’t have to accept those media labels. You need not settle for any defining category. You don’t have to be merely a taxpayer or a red state or a blue state or a consumer or a minority or a majority.

Of course, you’re general, but you’re also specific. A citizen and a person, and the person you are is like nobody else on the planet. Nobody has the exact memory that you have. What is now known is not all what you are capable of knowing. You are your own stories and therefore free to imagine and experience what it means to be human without wealth. What it feels like to be human without domination over others, without reckless arrogance, without fear of others unlike you, without rotating, rehearsing and reinvent-ing the hatreds you learned in the sandbox. And although you don’t have complete control over the narrative (no author does, I can tell you), you could nevertheless create it.

Although you will never fully know or successfully manipulate the charac-ters who surface or disrupt your plot, you can respect the ones who do by pay-ing them close attention and doing them justice. The theme you choose may change or simply elude you, but being your own story means you can always choose the tone. It also means that you can invent the language to say who you are and what you mean. But then, I am a teller of stories and therefore an optimist, a believer in the ethical bend of the human heart, a believer in the

mind's disgust with fraud and its appetite for truth, a believer in the ferocity of beauty. So, from my point of view, which is that of a storyteller, I see your life as already artful, waiting, just waiting and ready for you to make it art.

Thank you.

Toni Morrison's Commencement AddressWellesley College, 2004

– an excerpt –“Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts. It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each new generation. For peace is a process — a way of solving problems. With such a peace, there will still be quarrels and conflicting interests, as there are within families and nations. World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor — it requires only that they live together in mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement.”~ President John F. Kennedy, American University address, 1963

Any advice I received in high school, whether good or bad, well-intentioned or devious, went in one ear and out the other, because either I was physiologically incapable of processing the informa-tion or I simply wasn’t listening. For the most part, I was goofing around or worrying about girls, all the while putting in just enough effort to maintain passing grades.

It’s a classic case of “If I knew then what I know now,” for I could’ve aced so many classes had I paid attention and did the work; in short, had I not dis-missed certain classes as being “unimportant.” You know, like algebra. Which really was, and remains to this day, unimportant in my life. Okay, so I was right about that one. Adult Dana would definitely advise Adolescent Dana to just do the work; there’s always plenty of time to play afterward.

“So what are you going to do? This is the season when a clutch of successful women who have it all get up and give speeches to women like you and say, ‘To be perfectly honest, you can’t have it all.’ Well, maybe young women don’t wonder whether they can have it all any longer, but in case any of you are won-dering, of course you can have it all. What are you going to do? Everything is my guess. It will be a little messy, but embrace the mess. It will be complicated, but rejoice in the complications. It will not be anything like what you think it’s going to be like, but surprises are good for you. And don't be frightened. You can always change your mind. I know. I've had four careers and three husbands. And this is something else I want to tell you, one of the hundreds of things I didn’t know when I was sitting here so many years ago: you are not going to be you, fixed and immutable you, forever.”~ Nora Ephron, Wellesley Col-lege address, 1996

As high schools and colleges have had to cancel tradition graduation ceremonies, many schools have turned to creativity to laud the stu-dents’ efforts. Let the commencements commence:

RE-OPENINGWEDNESDAY, JUNE 3RD!

Perspective is important in everything. No situation can be accurately evaluated, no statement or conclusion made without first considering perspective. Perspective is important; perspective is everything.

Still, there are some thoughts, perhaps too important not to let out, too guttural to be evaluated, too personal to be sty-mied, that come out without perspective. For most people, they have good days, and they have bad ones. We share these synopses at liberty: “Today I had a bad day because of…” or “today was a great day because of…” But some may say, for one to conclude that what they experienced in a day is bad, to truly make that statement, they’d have to first consider everyone else’s day. Most people, though, don’t think to themselves, “Man, today sure was a bad day, but at least I wasn’t murdered.” Some may say they do this out of ignorance or misplaced self-importance, but maybe it’s just an honest depic-tion of their life. And shouldn’t they have the right to share their perspective others?

What I’ve been leading to this whole time is how I feel during this pandemic. I feel pretty upset. But this statement ties back to the question of perspective. Am I using perspective in this? Am I weighing how dire some other people’s situations are? No, absolutely not. It’s a self-centered and egotistical statement, but still an honest one. Obviously I am not the most hard hit by this pandemic. I am not a nurse, nor am I ill, nor am I on the brink of poverty due to the financial environment. I’m just bored and longing for the high school events that now may never happen. My feelings register so insignificantly on the scale of current problems that I almost shouldn’t be voicing that concern. But yet this is my current problem, and whether or not it’s significant to the world, at least it’s significant to me. Shouldn’t that be what matters?

~ Brian Foisy, KHS newspaper editor, wrestles with the question in "Pandemic Perspective." Read in full at https://heherdkhs.net/category/latest/

"Just keep learning, kid. Whatever you do, just keep learning." It's what my grand-father Dr. George Gallup ("Teddy" to me) always said. He had the true heart of a stu-dent and believed in learning as he believed in the air he breathed. "Just keep learning, kid." And so I have.

~ Kingsley Gallup, Tourist & Town publisher
