This area is tranquil with lovely country walks and access to the All Wales coastal path. As lockdown has eased we have not only maintained the numbers visiting the area but it is clear to see they are increasing as the reputation of his area increases as a place to visit and reap the benefits to health and wei[being that can be achieved on a visit to the Went looge Levels. The Wales Coast Path is 870 miles long. It begins-atChepstow on the banks ofthe Wye and finishes besidethe River Dee a few miles from Cheshire.

The Newport section of the path crosses the Caldicotand Wentloog Levels to meet the City of Newport.A distance of 23 miles/38km. The Gwent Levels areregistered as a Landscape ofOutstanding HistoricInterest in Wales. Along the path and in the surroundingarea there are landmarks and remains of medievalsettlements, the Roman occupation, the NormanConquest and industrial development and expansion. At the mid-point of the Newport Coast Path liesthe River Usk. The river with its deep and wide, navigable course has allowed for centuries of use.The Roman Fortress at Caerieon, Medieval castle andship are testament to this. The Gwent Levels have been designated as Sitesof Special Scientific Interest. The land has beenreclaimed from the sea. Atthe end of the IronAge - about 2,000 years ago -thiswas a tidallyinundated saltmarsh. The challenges of a tidethat ebbed and flowed more than two milesinland andthe manipulation of the land so thatit could be safe for settlement and cultivationhas shaped the history of the region. SinceRoman times imaginative engineering featshave protected homes, pastures and domesticanimals, as well as rare breeds of birds, flowersand wildlife in a place where flooding wouldotherwise be an everyday occurrence,

The land is intersected with drainage ditches.Locally they still have ancient names; they arecalled reen, ridge or vurrow, according to theirsize and function. In some places a gout - a flapregulated by the tide - allows fresh water outto sea while also keeping the salt water frommoving on to farmland,

Along most of the path an essential sea wallhas been built and rebuilt over the past 2000years. It affords astounding views of theEstuary, mudflats and the Somerset coast toone side and the extraordinary mixture ofnatufal and Industrial beauty df the loWiandsto the other.

There's more underneath! The Levels are rlch in the remains of buried prehistoric andRoman landscapes. The blanket of eanh (alluvium) and thewaterlogged conditions of the area act to preserve the buriedtreasure, but also means that it is vulnerable, The depth of thealluvium (made of silt, clay, sand and gravel) makes it impossibleto indentify the sites without careful, controlled excavation.i  ..J.*I.- .

St Brides and the importance of farming throughout the Gwent Levels

St Brides Wentloog, like most villages in thisarea lies on land reclaimed from the BristolChannel behind the sea wall. The flat, fertilelandscape drained by reens has influencedthe way the village has evolved. In 1900most of the area was owned by theTredegar estate and farmed by tenants andthis traditions continues.

Before the car became the most prominentmode of transport St Brides was a popularplace for a day out for the people of Newport.Theycame in charabancorby horse and cartand on foot to spend the day on the shorewhere there was a swimming pool filled bythe tide.

St Brides Church is an ancient building ofThroughout the Gwent levels, It is the farmers stone in the Decorated and Perpendicularworking in partnership with the Caldicot and styles. There is a plague inside the porchWentloog drainage board who are responsible which marks the high-tide level of the Bristolfor maintaining the system of reens and Channel Flood of 1607,ditches which makes the area habitable topeople and wildlife. In this area the flood drowned people as far
