How do the teams work?EachoftheteamsinTheTourofBritainwillpicktheirsixriderline-upfromtheirsquad,whichfortheUCIProTourteamsmaybeupto30riders.

Generallyteamswillapproachtheracewithridersindesignatedroles,suchasateamleadertoaimforaplaceashighaspossibleonthegeneralclassification,asprintertotargetstagewins,aspecialistclimberforthehillierstagesandseveraldesignatedhelpersordomestiques.

Adomestiqueisariderwhosesoleaimistohelptheirteamleaders.Theirroleincludesshelteringtheirleadersfromthewind,fetchingfoodanddrink,tomakingsuretheirmenareinthebestpossiblepositionduringtherace,particularlyimportantwhenapproachingthefinish.Theyalsohavetobereadytogiveuptheirbikeifoneoftheirleaderssuffersamechanicalproblem,suchasapuncture.Domestiquesdonotsharethegloryoftheirteamleaders,buttheyarevitaltoanyteamwantingtowintoweartheIGGoldJersey.

Oneachstage,thedomestiqueswillworktoprotecttheteamleaderandensuretheirleadergetstothelinefirst.Iftheirleaderdoesacquirealeader’sjerseyitistheirroletomakesuretheleaderkeepsthejerseytoo.

Whenitcomestothesprinters,theentireteam,includingtheteamleader,willworktogethertogetthesprintertothefinishlinefirstwithaleadouttrain.Ofcoursethankstothewaytheraceunfoldswithattacksandbreakaways,oneofthedomestiquesmayfindthemselveselevatedintotheroleofteamleaderthankstotheirsportingperformances.

Where does The Tour of Britain fit in?AllprofessionalroadcyclingeventsarerankedbytheUCI,thesport’sgoverningbody.TheTourofBritainisa2.1levelevent.Thefirstnumber,2,identifiesitasbeingamulti-day,orstage,race.Single-dayeventsaredesignatedwitha1.

Therankingofaneventplaysapartinwhich,andhowmany,teamscanrideandhowmuchprizemoneyisawarded,amongstotherthings.Thenextlevelupforstageracesis2.HCbeforeonefinalcategoryforthethreethree-weekGrandToursofFrance,ItalyandSpain.

DomesticallyTheTourofBritainistheUK’sonlyUCIstagerace,andcurrentlyoneofjustthreeUCI,orinternational,racesinBritain.

TheToursitsatthetopofthedomesticcalendarorganisedbyBritishCycling,thesport’sgoverningbodyintheUK,whichfeaturesroadeventsrightupfromthegrassrootsleveltoleadingseriesforprofessionalteamsandriderssuchasthePremierCalendarandTourSeries.

InternationallytheTourofBritainisapartoftheseasonlongUCIEuropeTour,madeupofsingle-dayandstageraces,inwhichprofessionalteamsfromaroundtheworldcompete.

Famousone-dayracessuchasHetNieuwsbladinBelgium,theGirodelPiemonteinItalyandthenewPrudentialRideLondon-SurreyClassicandhistoricstageracesliketheTourl’AvenirinFranceandthenationalToursofPortugal,AustriaandLuxembourgallsitontheEuropeTour,whichbeginsinJanuaryandendsinOctober.

AlongsidetheUCIEuropeToursittheOceania,Asia,AfricaandAmericacalendars,allonelevelbelowtheUCIWorldTour,whichincludestheworld’sbiggestracessuchastheTourdeFrance.

CurrentlytherearefourtypesofcyclingteamthatareallowedtotakepartintheUCIEuropeTour,andthusTheTourofBritain.

Theseare:

UCI ProTeams-thePremierLeagueofcyclingcompetinginalloftheWorldTourevents,suchasSkyProCyclingorCannondaleProCycling.

UCI Professional Continental Teams -Thesecondtierofeliteteamsfromallaroundtheworld,includingmanyteamsfamiliarfromtheTourdeFrance,suchasSojasunorTeamEuropcar,andhomeinterestintheAnglo-GermanTeamNetAppEndura.

UCI Continental-Thislevelismadeupofarecord154differentteamsfrom46countriesforthe2013season.SixofthemareBritishsquadswhocompetedomesticallyineventssuchasTheTourSeries,aswellasinternationallyinEurope.

National Teams-Finallythenationalteamofthenationareallowedtocompete,sointhecaseofTheTourofBritainthatisGreatBritain.Thered,whiteandbluejerseyshavebeenafamiliarsightinTheTouroverthepastdecade,givingmanyriderssuchasEdClancy,AlexDowsettandMarkCavendishtheirfirsttasteoftheirnationalTour.

RiderstakingpartinracesonthevariouscontinentalcircuitsandtheWorldTourearnthemselvespoints,dependingonwheretheyfinishedinaparticularrace,whicharethentalliedgivingtherideranindividualranking,aswellasarankingforhisteamandforhiscountryontheUCIEuropeTourandWorldRankingtables.Theriderinthefirstplaceoftheindividualrankingofthecontinentalcircuitattheendoftheseasonwillbecrownedthewinnerofhiscircuit.
