Gone Green Garden TOUR STOPS About the
Tour
If you’ve ever wondered about organic farming or what it
means to be “certified organic” join us at Maplestar Farm,
operated by the Trethewey family since 1940. Jake and Dawn
Trethewey have been growing a wide variety of certified
organic produce, including prize-winning
gourmet garlic since 2004. Because soil
conservation and water quality are
cornerstones of the National Organic
Program, crop rotation and the use of
cover crops to help prevent runoff and build soil fertility are
actively practiced and are showing measurable results over the
past six years. Come and see how Maplestar
Farm is committed to providing local, delicious,
healthy, and fresh produce --- direct from their
fields to your table.
Rain gardens are sprouting up in northeast Ohio communities
and nationwide. Learn all about these attractive “green”
gardens designed to capture and filter water runoff
from homes, rooftops, and driveways. Identify the
plants and methods needed for your very own!
Bogs, Ferns, and Wildflowers! See how you
can turn deep, shady woods and wet areas
into uniquely useable space. Don’t miss your
chance to visit this beautiful homestead and get ideas for your
own yard, from native plantings to deer
proofing. Using landscape design, you’ll see
how to work with Mother Nature for your
own piece of paradise.
Soil is the foundation for all good
gardening. Learn the Campbell’s
recipe for building rich, healthy
soil with “black gold” compost
and how gardening is good for
your health. Your family will
enjoy the flowers, berries,
vegetables, and even fairies at the Campbell’s organic gardens!
Established in 1998, Avalon Gardens is a full
service nursery which offers professional
gardening advice, sustainable landscape
design, specialty garden designs, and even
charming Bed & Breakfast accommodations.
But above all, they are known for their plants! Avalon Gardens
organically grows, sells, and landscapes with native Northeast
Ohio plants. Native plants are better adapted to
local conditions, attract birds, butterflies and
beneficial bugs, provide four season interest, and
preserve native habitat. Even more, these plants
do not require fertilizers, require less water,
reduce air pollution, and soothe the soul! Be sure you stop in,
smell the flowers , and see all that Avalon Gardens has to offer!
