TOUR DE YORKSHIRE 2015
Summary / Sommaire
This year will once again see sporting history in the making as Yorkshire launches the first ever Tour de Yorkshire international cycle race. The Tour de Yorkshire is a 2.1 UCI Europe Tour event. This year’s inaugural event is the start of a cycling legacy for Yorkshire following the huge success of the 2014 Yorkshire Grand Départ, which was watched at the roadside by crowds of over 4 million, and dubbed ‘The grandest Grand Départ ever’ by A.S.O. Race Director Christian Prudhomme. Welcome to Yorkshire and A.S.O. are strongly committed to developing what will become a breathtaking annual race in a county made for cycling. The event will see three full stages taking place over three days, with a women’s race and mass participation sportive running alongside.
Stage 1Starting at the seaside town of Bridlington and 174km later finishing further up the coast in Scarborough. The riders will pass through spectacular coastal scenery and the iconic North York Moors landscapes. A beautiful stage to start the Tour de Yorkshire.
Stage 2The race will start outside the imposing Selby Abbey and head out towards Market Weighton, weaving through the Yorkshire Wolds to Beverley and onto Stamford Bridge before arriving in the historic City of York.
Stage 3A stage to challenge the riders starting at the home of sculpture, Wakefield. This stage will also take in Barnsley, six classified and brutal climbs, including the Cow & Calf, before racing into Roundhay Park in Leeds to finish.

Bridlington Scarborough
Scarborough’s stunning scenery, glorious beaches and colourful history have brought people flocking to the town for the past 400 years. Scarborough became known as probably the world’s first seaside resort in the 1600s, when the health-giving properties of the Spa waters were discovered. The town remains to this day one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK. The town offers plenty of culture, with the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough Open Air Theatre (the largest open air theatre in Europe), the geological Rotunda Museum and last but not least, the imposing castle boasting 3,000 years of history. Scarborough is a mecca for sports fans, with top class cricket, motorcycling and surfing regularly on the menu. In late May 2015, it hosts for the first time the Dale Power Solution P1 Superstock Powerboat Racing Grand Prix. The town has a number of ambitious projects coming up, continuing the transformation from a traditional seaside resort into a vibrant and cosmopolitan place to live, work and visit. Plans include a new multi-million pound state of the art water park and an exciting new University.www.yorkshire.com/scarborough

1 stagest
This traditional coastal resort, tucked away amidst East Yorkshire’s rolling countryside, is quiet country lanes and picturesque villages. The town offers a charming taste of the Great British Seaside, and forms part of a spectacular heritage coastline. With a blend of swee-ping promenades and amusement arcades as well as award winning golden sands, Bridlington is known as the "seaside as it should be!". Steeped in history, Bridlington boasts a 900 year old working harbour and a high street full of ancient buildings in its Old Town, where you will find traditional pubs and antique shops rubbing shoulders with art galleries and tearooms. At the heart of the town is The Spa Bridlington, a striking seafront theatre which has been part of the town for over a century. Perched on a dramatic cliff-top position overlooking Bridlington is the stunning Sewerby Hall and Gardens, set amidst 50 acres of parkland. Visitors can step back in time at this grand historic home, and experience the house as it was over 100 years ago thanks to a recent restoration.www.yorkshire.com/bridlington

York offers an eclectic mix of history, architectural beauty, buzzing nightlife and over 30 award winning attractions in its compact centre, including York Minster – the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, the JORVIK Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. The Romans knew this ancient city as Eboracum. To the Saxons it was Eoforwick. The Vikings – who came as invaders but stayed on in settlements – called it Jorvik. The medieval legacy is everywhere to be seen, in the streets, buildings and the charming maze of ginnels. York is surrounded by the longest complete medieval city walls in England and is home to the Shambles, the oldest shopping street in Europe. York is also a vibrant cosmopolitan city, with an extraordinary choice of shops, restaurants and café bars. One of the top three cities for cycling in the UK, York offers 190km of cycle routes, a purpose built 1km cycle circuit for racing, training and accessible sessions, and an Olympic size velodrome. York has 2,000 cycle parking spaces in the city centre and developed the first Park & Pedal scheme in the UK.

At the heart of Yorkshire, Selby has always played a key role in the region’s industrial development, from the opening of Selby canal in the 18th century and as the home of Yorkshire’s very first railway station in 1834. The town has played host to many industries including ship building and coal mining. A sculpture in the town’s riverside park depicts a variety of trades, showing a monk, miller, mariner and miner. Selby’s gem is undoubtedly its magnificent Abbey. Founded in 1069, the Abbey is the birthplace of King Henry I. It was founded by a monk from Auxerre in France, after he saw three swans landing on the river which he took to be a sign from God. The swans have become a symbol for the town. The Abbey dominates the charming market town which offers much to visitors, especially amateur cyclists. The town is at an important crossroads on the Trans Pennine Trail cycle route across Britain and acts as a base for access to fantastic cycling terrain. The villages surrounding Selby offer an un-spoilt England, steeped in history: with battlefields, castles and Yorkshire charm.

A culture lovers dream, Wakefield has become an international centre for sculpture, and is home to two internationally important galleries, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park – one of the largest open air galleries in Europe spanning over 500 acres. Heritage here is plentiful – Wakefield Cathedral boasts the tallest spire in Yorkshire dominating the city’s skyline at 247ft and is almost 600 years old. The area’s mining heritage is celebrated at the National Coal Mining Museum for England, one of the oldest working coal mines in the country. The area has a strong sporting legacy with Europe’s longest continuous flat horse racing course in Pontefract and three Rugby League teams: Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers. Wakefield is famous for growing Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb which has European protected name status. Visitors can try a tour of the growing sheds where you can actually hear the rhubarb grow. Over 120,000 visitors flock to the Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb in February each Year.
www.yorkshire.com/wakefield

YORKSHIRE BANKPartenaire officiel
