The TourThe Gardens of Provence is a 10-day journey through

Mediterranean France experiencing and celebrating the region’s gardens, markets, fine cuisine and inspiring countryside.

Days of planned activities and excursions alternate with unscheduled time to pursue individual interests. Our goal is to provide each participant an

opportunity to view magnificent gardens and experience life in Provence.

A journey or two to the local markets will give additional insight into local culture.

We will visit at least 10 gardens, tour hill towns, and observe the French custom of enjoying most of our main meals during the day at lunch.

AccommodationsThree nights at the hotel “La Perouse,” a lovely boutique hotel that is ideally located in a resi-dential area, in the heart of Nice, and just a few minutes from the world famous “Promenade des Anglais” and convenient to the beach, gardens, shops and museums. The hotel features 46 renovated guest rooms and a highly professional staff that is committed to your comfort. Rooms include a flat screen TV, complimentary wireless access and safety box. Enjoy a drink in the quaint bar and meals at the restaurant “Le Voci,” just steps away.

Five nights in upper Provence at Hotel “La Bastide des Bois Breant,” a newly refurbished French Manor house in the village of Maubec. It’s surrounded by quietly charming gardens reminiscent of the famous Joie de vivre dating back to the 19th century. Some guests will stay next door at “Le Mas de Botonis” a charming B&B in an 18th century “Mas” or traditional Provencal farmhouse, built around a courtyard shaded by ancient lime trees. Everyone will enjoy freshly prepared meals in the outdoor poolside courtyard.

Daily ScheduleDay 1 – Depart Chicago and fly to Paris.

Day 2 – D – Arrive in Paris and fly to Marseilles with motor coach to Nice. Overnight at hotel “La Perouse.” Time to settle in and take a refreshing stroll through the Old City before your welcome dinner reception.

Day 3 – B/L – Depart for the city of Ventimiglia situated along the coast over the Italian border to visit our first garden, The Hanbury Botanic Gardens of La Mortola. Founded in 1867 by Sir Thomas Hanbury and assisted by his brother Daniel, who created his garden of exotic plants which came from all parts of the world. On to Menton for lunch and tour “Clos de Peyronnet,” the magnificent third generation private garden of English plantsman, William Waterfield. Time to stroll the streets of Nice with dinner on your own.

Day 4 – B/D – Today takes us to Biot to visit the private “Jardin de La Chevre d’Or,” a para-dise of century old trees and exotic flowering plants, pebble paths set in patterns, terraces lead-ing to whispering fountains, lanes of orange trees, fields of agapanthus, ancient olive groves and giant cypresses that reach for an azure sky; all are echoes of nearby Italy. Then on to Opio to see first hand the making of olive oil at “Moulin de la Brague.” Dinner in Nice.

Day 5 – B/L/D – We depart early, leaving Nice behind as we go to St Jean-Cap-Ferrat where we’ll visit two magnificent gardens: “Le Jardin des Cedres” the private garden of the Grand Marnier Co., and “Villa Ephrusi-Rothschild,” a Venetian inspiration with many gardens cre-ated in 1905 for Beatrice de Rothschild. Lunch will be at the “Villa Ephrusi” and then on to our B&B in northern Provence. A light supper awaits you at the Bastide located in the upper portion of Provence in the region of “The Luberon” known as the Tuscany of France.

Then on to Villeneuve -Lez-Avignon to visit a Provencal garden within the “Abbaye de Saint André.” Lunch on our own at the nearby La Chartreuse with time to stroll the gardens. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it’s composed of three cloisters and several monastic buildings (church, refec-tory, monks’ cells, chapter house) as well as numerous gardens. Dinner at the Bastide.

Tour with the Experts

Tour Co-Leader: Roberta SladkyRoberta Sladky, Director of Olbrich Botanical Gardens since 2006, has lived, toured and stud-ied in Southern France. Indeed, when Sladky started college at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, she intended to major in French. A course in botany changed all that. But now, with 30 years of experience in plants and public horticulture, Sladky is a perfect co-leader for a tour to Provence. Prior to coming to Olbrich, Sladky was conservatory manager at the Marjorie McNeeley Conservatory at Como Park in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1984–2005, and horticulture curator for the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, Minnesota. She is delighted to provide the horticultural commentary for this tour.

Tour Co-Leader: Monique Jamet HookerMonique Jamet Hooker is a self-directed chef and teacher with an enthusiasm for food learned in restaurants throughout Europe and the United States. A native of France, Monique opened the wildly successful Monique’s Café, located in Chicago’s River North district in 1983. She co-authored Cooking With the Seasons: A Year In My Kitchen with Tracie Rich-ardson, and hosted “The Seasonal Kitchen” on Cable 6 in Wilmette, Illinois. Now living in Wisconsin, she continues to teach and hosts special dinners to promote the “sustainable table” as well as the art of “slow food” which focuses on using local producers. Her clients include Baxter, Williams-Sonoma, Whole Foods, Byerly’s, the American Association of Teachers of French, and many cooking schools throughout the United States. Monique led Olbrich’s first Garden Tour of Provence in 2007.
