ABOUT THE TOWN OF HOMOSASSA, FLORIDA

Homosassa’s recent population growth rate is smaller than that of Citrus County and Florida. This smaller growth rate is largely responsible for the retention of Old Homosassa’s character. The nearby availability of the Suncoast Parkway is already bringing increased population growth to the area.

• Area: According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 7.8 square miles (20.1 km2) is land and 0.54 square miles (1.4 km2), or 6.30%, is water.

Location:

Homosassa is located on the gulf coast of central Florida and sits on the bank of the Homosassa River. It is located in southwestern Citrus County, to the west of U.S. Routes 19 and 98 (Suncoast Boulevard). The CDP extends west on both sides of the Homosassa River to a network of marshes and islands that lead to the Gulf of Mexico. The original settlement of Homosassa is located on the south side of the Homosassa River, 3 miles (5 km) west of Homosassa Springs by either West Fishbowl Drive or West Yulee Drive. The Homosassa River is a spring fed river that meanders west to the Homosassa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Brief History of Homosassa:

Old Homosassa is an area rich in history. Its varied habitat and natural features, combined with a history of different cultures, has made Old Homosassa the unique community it is today. The first inhabitants were Native Americans. Archeological research indicates that Citrus County was occupied by pre-historic aboriginal people for 12,000 years prior to the arrival of Spanish explorers.

Although Hernando De Soto explored the area in the 16th century, it was the passage of the Armed Occupation Act of 1842 that spurred development. The act stated that a 200,000-acrearea south of present-day Gainesville was open for settlement. This law stipulated that one hundred and sixty acres would be given to any head of family or single man over eighteen who was able to bear arms, could live on the land in a house fit for habitation during five consecutive years and cultivate at least five

acres.

William Cooley took advantage of this opportunity offered by the Federal government. Cooley and his neighbors found the Act’s incentives appealing and submitted numerous applications to settle the land. As a landowner, merchant, pioneer, shipper of red cedar and the area’s first Justice of the Peace, Cooley played a prominent role in the settlement of Homosassa. General Information

Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts come to enjoy the beautiful waterways for boating, kayaking, fishing and other outdoor water & nature sports in Homosassa. Golfing is also a very popular sport in the area. Only 45 minutes north of the Greater Tampa Bay, this area is fast becoming a destination for day & weekend trips by working people looking for adventure.

Citrus County

Citrus County in West Central Florida is bounded by rivers, lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. It encompasses an area of approximately 661 square miles (approximately 570 square miles of land and 91 square miles of lakes and rivers). It is located approximately 70 miles north of the Tampa/St. Petersburg area.

The Citrus watershed area begins at the Withlacoochee River and takes in the Crystal River, the Homosassa River and the Chassahowitzka River. These last three rivers all originate at very large underground springs and flow about seven miles until they reach the Gulf of Mexico. The Withlacoochee River, however, originates southward, in Central Florida and flows north, forming the eastern and northern boundaries of Citrus County. The Cross Florida Barge Canal, which was planned to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, enters the Gulf at the northern end of the county. Hernando County is located on the south, Levy County on the north, with Sumter and Marion counties on the east. The average annual temperature is 72 degrees. The warm springs have a year-round water temperature also of 72 degree. This area, with its federally protected waters, has become the winter home one of the largest group of manatees within the United States. Along the western area of the county are literally thousands of offshore islands. The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge encompasses large portions of the southwestern area of Citrus County. Much of the land west of U. S. Highway 19 is protected wetlands which are unavailable for development.

On the northern and eastern borders, the Withlacoochee River presents 45 miles of river front beauty and recreational opportunity. Northeast of Inverness, the long, lazy Withlacoochee helps refresh the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes, a 23,0 00-acre bass playground for fishermen and a wetland home for a dozen species of bird and mammal considered rare elsewhere in America. All these unique environmental factors have helped to define the area as the Nature Coast and bring eco-tourism to the economic forefront. Population

Citrus County is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area known as Homosassa Springs. In 2000, the population of Citrus County was 118,085 and more than 90% of the population lived outside of the two incorporated areas (Crystal River and Inverness). As of July 1, 2014, the population was estimated

at 139,377, an increase of approximately 18%. Between 2014 and July 1, 2016, Citrus County experienced a 1.017% increase in population to approximately 143,621.

As of July 1, 2016, the population breakdown was 14.7% eighteen years or younger (down from 15.2% in 2013 and 15.9% in 2010), 36% sixty-five years or older (up from 34.5% in 2013 and 31.9% in 2010), and 49.3% between 19 and 64 years of age (down from 50.3% in 2013 and 52.2% in 2010).
