Gillian McKeith, who returns to C4 this week, shares her dietary tips G illian McKeith's tough approach in the first series of YouAre What YouEat made her a household name, and now she's back with a second helping of advice (C4,Wednesday). McKeith, 46, lives in north London with her American husband and their two children. Here, the former junk-food addict tells us what turned her diet around. The New Year is the perfect time for a fresh start - what are the easiest changes we can make? Have a look in the fridge and see what your main weaknesses are. It will probably be foods with a high sugar or salt content. Instead, go for something sweet but healthy, such as fresh fruit or roasted sweet potato. What's the best bit of advice you've ever been given? When I was seven, my grandfather told me to drink hot water first thing in the morning and again an hour before I went to bed. He said it would clean out my insides and get my bowels moving, and he was right - he lived to a ripe old age. I promised him I'd pass this on to people. How long have you followed a healthy diet? About 15 years. Before that I ate junk all the time - I was getting through six chocolate bars and 15 cups of tea a day. I was so ill I could hardly get out of bed. Then my boyfriend took me out for my birthday - to a macrobiotic seminar! I thought we were going out for a meal, but he drove me to this place in the middle of nowhere and said, 'I'm leaving you here: That was the turning point. What was the worst case you came across while doing the show? ~thas to be ~ick Hughes from the first series. He would eat huge quantities of food and was heading for a heart attack. I could have used his trousers as a sleeping bag. But his success has been astounding: his waist went from 44in to 34in and he's training to become a raw food chef. Have you managed to change the : diets of your family and friends? Yes,and my children have had an influence on the other kids in their class. They like seaweed as a snack - you canbuy toastednori sticksat health food stores - and when the other kids tried it, they all wanted it! Do you ever miss naughty treats? No, because I have healthy treats, like the great fudge brownie cake that I make from carob and seeds. Have you been surprised by the success of the show? No, and I'll tell you why - people are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired! Then something comes along that is presented in an entertaining way and it sparks them off. What are your plans for the future? I'd like to continue doing this as I think we've only touched the surface I have loads of energy and there's still a lot to do! Aspen /.
