Q 7) A manufacturing company wants to design a repetitive production system toproduce one of its products. The production process requires (14) tasks thatare listed in the table given below, along-with estimated task times &predecessors for each task. The company wants to produce at least 270 unitsof product per day. It expects the produc.tion lin.eto operate 450 minutes peJ~y .

(a) Draw a precedence diagram for the tasks & compute maximum cycletime, theoretical minimum number of workstations, balance efficiency &smoothness index using Rank Positional Weight Heuristic.

(b) Compute the actual output per day that would occur with the line balancethus achieved & work out the efficiency of the production line.

(c) Can you suggest any further improvement?

..

Q8) (a) Explainthe working and construction of any two of the following materialhandling equipme11ts:Belt conveyor, Fork Lift trucks, Crawler cranes.

(b) Describe brieflythe variousvisualization aids commonlyused in planningthe plant layout showing the relative comparison between the variousvisualizationaids.

Q9) (a) Give a brief account of various scheduling heuristics used for jobsequencing in job shop scheduling. Why does SPT (Shortest ProcessingTime) rule perfonn so well for a job shop where jobs are arriving randomlyover time? Is there any limitation of using SPT rule?

(b) Explain the various methods for comparing alternative layouts in planningthe plant layout. Explain briefly the role of various qualitative parameters

in obtaining the optimiz~d layout.
