Designed with ease of use in mind, the Guide features a collection of diverse projects that provide a fascinating insight into the work of some of the most talented lighting designers practising today.

This year, the Guide has a distinctly global flavour, with projects from as far afield as Australia and Canada, and of course, in this World Cup year, Brazil.

We’ve tried to select projects from different genres, of different sizes, and importantly, using different light sources, but that last criteria becomes ever more difficult as the dominance of LED lighting continues for almost all arenas.

However, whatever the light source specified, we think the design teams of these projects should be applauded for their creative vision.

Illuminating a sporting stadium after its refurbishment is a serious business in South America

The ceremony to celebrate the official re-opening of the refurbished 56,000-capacity Estádio Beira-Rio (Riverside Stadium) in Porto Alegre, Brazil featured a stunning lightshow, designed by Patrick Woodroffe. Woodroffe brought his vast experience of producing stadium events to Brazil, where he collaborated closely with Sao Paulo-based lighting designer, Cesio Lima.

For the project, 531 Robe moving lights were specified and supplied by Brazilian rental company, LPL. The stadium – the second biggest in the south of Brazil, and home to Sport Club Internacional - underwent

massive redevelopment to bring it in line to host key matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The opening ceremony for the revitalised venue was a very special moment, and there was a huge pressure on show director, Edson Erdmann to deliver a landmark event.

A specific challenge was ensuring that the lighting worked harmoniously with the eye-catching pitch projections, and the movements of 500 actors and dancers, and 400 musicians.

To light the field of play comprehensively, the stadium was divided into three sections or layers. The top tier - rigged in the roof above the stands

and the furthest away from the performance area – saw the most powerful fixtures deployed – Robe’s ColorWash 2500E AT, ColorSpot 2500E AT and ColorBeam 2500E ATs, together with 24 x ROBIN MMX WashBeams and 113 x ROBIN Pointes. These were the primary fixtures used for throwing light down onto the pitch and for illuminating the audience. MMX WashBeams – due to their framing shutters – were also used to pinpoint specific objects or performers.

The second ring of lights were mainly beam lights using 5r bulbs plus some more Pointes and ColorSpot 1200EATs and ColorWash 1200E ATs.The third ring comprised 66 x LEDWash 600s positioned around the perimeter of the pitch, used for skimming and washing across the area in big, bold, bright sweeps of colour. At each of the four corners of the field behind the line of LEDWash 600s, were 5 Pointes, used for special effects and shooting intense angled beams that sliced right across the field of play.

Lighting an iconic Brisbane landmark

ANOLIS

The heritage-listed Newstead Gas Ring is an iconic piece of Brisbane’s historical industrial architecture at the hub of a major urban regeneration project. Gasworks is a plan started more than two decades ago to transform a formally derelict post-industrial wasteland into a busy and vibrant contemporary living, working and commercial environment.

The newly launched Gasworks Plaza element of the project stands below the superstructure of a former gas storage ring, which towers above the site… and has been illuminated to bring its stunning Victorian architecture to life in a spectacular lighting and sound installation concept, bridging the gap between its former functionality and its new place at the centre of the project.

The gasworks that once stood on the site, adjacent to the Brisbane River, was opened in 1887 and provided lighting to the city for decades. Now it is living, breathing and being appreciated once more with intricate and beautiful colours reminiscent of gas flames.

The depiction of flames, linking past to present on the classic steel structure, was the brainchild of lighting designer, Heath Williamson of Brisbane creative lighting practice Firefly, who collaborated closely with Jono Perry, technical director of the Brisbane Festival to achieve the project.

The pair has 30 years’ experience in the event and theatre production and cinematography industries, plus a personal connection with the structure. Williamson first saw the Gas Ring when he was working for a film company on a NSW rugby tour with Tina Turner - who performed under it. At the time he imagined that it would make an amazing light sculpture. Several years later he saw an old gasometer in Berlin lit for a music festival, which re-ignited the idea.

It was Williamson who initially asked the developers of the Newstead area FKP to let him re-imagine the landmark Gas Ring as a giant public sculpture for all to enjoy. Once he received the green light, he had an open brief to bring the specific sense of colour, kinesys and fluidity he wanted to the art, choosing to work with Anolis to fulfill his vision.

More than 500 LED lighting fixtures were supplied by Anolis to create Williamson’s design. ArcDots - a super-bright Cree MC-E RGBW multichip-based LED pixel fixture with an IP67 rating for good weather resistance has been used on every bracing cross-member of steel on the middle and top rings, which are approximately 1200mm apart. There are also five runs of seven ArcDots at 1200mm spacing on every fourth spire, with a further 40 units uplighting the finials at the top of each spire. In addition, 60 Anolis ArcSource 96s uplight the main frames of each of the 20 spires, with ArcSource Integral MCs ensconced in the ground beneath the trees around the structure to complement the glowing metal.

Ahead of making a decision on fittings, Williamson and Perry travelled to Singapore’s Garden By The Bay, where they saw ArcSource 96s in action, and that impressed them enough to confirm the fixtures for the Gas Ring. ‘I love the power and the throw,’ he explained.

All the lighting is controlled via an e:cue DMX system, which was programmed by Williamson and Perry. Perry produced four 10-minute music tracks for a weekend lightshow, which plays on Friday and Saturday nights. During the week, the Ring is lit after dark in a signature scheme of different colours, depending on season, date and local events.

As a show director for Opera Australia, Perry spent eight years integrating mixed- and multi-visual mediums with music, so was a perfect partner to bring the magic of music to the Gas Ring and Gasworks Plaza, a space designed to host music and entertainment events of all types.

The overall redeveloped Brisbane Gasworks project also features Gasometer 1, an upmarket retail destination, and when complete, will accommodate a community of around 5,000 workers and 1,800 residents in the rejuvenated Newstead precinct… with the fabulously lit Gas Ring standing out like a beacon at its heart.

Undoubtedly one of the most talked about hotels of the moment, The London Edition needs little by way of introduction, and has clearly made its mark on the international hospitality industry and social scene alike.

A joint venture between Studio 54’s Ian Schrager and the Marriott Group, the venue has been designed with London in mind. Set in the former Berners Hotel, a row of five Georgian townhouses, in Fitzrovia, the design comes from a mix of ages and inspirations: there are elements of Aristos’ country piles and London Gentlemen’s Clubs, secret Parisian hideaways

and New York’s Grand Central Station. Georgian architecture gives way to Belle Epoque detailing and space age fittings.

A signature of Schrager’s hotels is the ‘lobby-as-a-social-scene’ element, with statement furniture and lighting at the forefront of the interior design.

Chelsom was commissioned to develop custom lighting for the public areas, to accentuate the contemporary interior whilst blending seamlessly with the grandeur of the original building.

The interior scheme certainly makes a statement; textures are warm and tactile and the colour

palate rich and sumptuous, while the lighting is a mix of extravagant opulence and understated elegance.

Chelsom produced an array of sophisticated custom-designed fixtures for the Punch Bar, Berners Tavern restaurant, and lobby featuring varying designs of matt black shades and metallic finishes with contemporary lines and shapes at the forefront. These include a succession of striking gold tripod-style table lamps offset with simple black tapered shades lines the restaurant and bar areas, while LED reading lights in a customised matt bronze finish are a distinguished addition to the lobby area. A custom designed over-sized black box silk shade is suspended above the billiard table by a pair of long-reach arms, finished in matt black for dramatic effect, designed to project light effectively onto the table below.

World Cup fever is about to hit, and never more so than as Brazil prepares to host the 2014 tournament. However, in order for the expected three billion television viewers – yes, that really is billion – to get full enjoyment from their viewing experience, a series of advanced lighting upgrades for all the involved stadia have been put in place to ensure the pitches are optimised for HD, 3D, and the latest super-slow motion replay technology.

Nine of the 12 venues hosting World Cup games will be using lighting technology from Philips. To simulate daylight conditions on the pitch in order to help the players’ – and officials – performance and to ensure that TV viewers can see every moment, emotion and detail of the beautiful game, pitch lighting will be provided at Fonte Nova (Salvador), Castelão (Fortaleza), Arena Pantanal (Cuiaba), Arena da Baixada (Curitiba) and Arena das Dunas (Natal). Philips’ ArenaVision pitch lighting will enable HDTV, 3D and super slow motion replays, making sure viewers don’t miss one single vital moment of play. At various venues, Philips will also light areas around the stadiums, such

as conference facilities, shops, hospitality suites, changing rooms and the players’ tunnel.

For visiting fans, the spectacle and excitement will be evident long before they get inside five of the venues, as the stadium façades will be lit, highlighting the architecture with colourful and dynamic LED lighting at Maracanã (Rio de Janeiro), South America’s largest stadium, and Arena Pantanal (Cuiaba), Beira Rio (Porto-Alegre), Fonte Nova (Salvador) and Arena da Baixada (Curitiba).

LED light for Brazil’s iconic MaracanãStadiums are not just about football; they are beacons to the cities and countries that host major sporting events. A great stadium can galvanize support, attract tourists and reflect a city’s place on the world stage. With colourful and dynamic LED lighting, stadiums can be transformed into iconic landmarks.

Stadiums can be lit in the colours of the two teams, can flash when a goal is scored or even change colour to reflect the atmosphere inside – there are endless possibilities to create sporting statements and enhance the overall stadium experience. Also, such technologies can be used for non-sporting events, such as pop concerts.

Now it is living, breathing and being appreciated once more with intricate and beautiful colours reminiscent of gas flames.

So when it came to specifying the façade lighting for Rio de Janeiro’s 78,000-seat Maracanã stadium, Brazil’s most famous football venue, one of the most important lighting designers in Brazil, Antônio Carlos Mingrone called in Philips to realise his vision.

At Maracanã, up in the stadium roof, Philips’ LED lighting will be used to reflect the colours of the national flags for each of the teams involved in the match.

For televised matches, there are stringent lighting requirements by broadcasters, which are all the more important since the advent of HDTV, 3D and of course, super-slow motion replays, so Brazil had to make sure it got it right.

The simple, state-of-the-art design of the P850 and P851 gives direct thermal transfer from the LEDs to the entire body.

Unique aerodynamic vents created by the vertical fins and the outer rim are designed to accelerate natural convection through the heatsink. Each airway is heated and the rising hot air draws cold air in from the bottom, immediately cooling the LEDs. On leaving the vents, the hot air converges smoothly into a laminar flow, quickly removing heat from the luminaire.

Most high power luminaires that use modular LED panels have issues of centralised heating. LEDs in the centre of the luminaire cannot be cooled as effectively as those near the edge, with a shorter lifetime and faster depreciation of performance.

The P850 and P851 address this problem elegantly by using linear PCBs on the sides. Fewer high powered LEDs, placed strategically along the luminaire, allows the unique geometry of the housing to maintain all LEDs at an even low temperature.

The latest blockbuster movie, Divergent, is wowing audiences with its futuristic, sci-fi plot and special effects – some of which are home grown.

Specialist lighting plays a huge part in the fi lm, and lighting expert, Olmec Advanced Materials, based in South Yorkshire, was chosen to provide it.

The fi lm, which is based on the fi rst in Victoria Roth’s trilogy of books, is already a hit in the US, and stars Kate Winslet and Shailene Woodley.

Olmec’s managing director, Paul Lancaster, felt it was a privilege to be have been able to help bring the fi lm to life with his company’s Surelight range of lighting.

Working closely with production company, DVG Productions, Olmec helped create the fi lm’s futuristic feel with spectacular lighting effects, using its Dolphin LED street lights, Atlas LED pendant lights, Arcus LED wallwashers and electroluminescent (EL) wire and strip.

An office complex in the Isle of Man goes green with an LED upgrade

With the help of MHA Lighting, three companies with offices in St. Mary’s Court, a commercial building in Douglas, IOM, are significantly reducing their lighting energy consumption, with savings estimated to exceed £300,000 and 850 tonnes of Co2. The project scooped Best Practice in the Private Sector in the Isle of Man’s Energy Awards 2013.

reduction in Co2 production, of 55 tonnes per year.

Catalina Property Services’ spokesperson said: ‘We are pleased to say that MHA Lighting has been able to offer a solution that delivered on all our collective goals. By replacing the lighting in the offices of our residents with low-energy LED fittings,

not only are they seeing real cost savings on their energy bills – over £300,000 is expected, but the light colour, output and uniformity is superb and the initial feedback is that staff are benefiting from the improved lighting levels.

‘We are only two months into the project and already actual meter readings suggest we are ahead of the projected lighting energy savings. To have our project win the Best Practice category in this year’s Energy Awards further vindicates our switch to LED lighting and fulfils our aim to help to set benchmark for other energy saving projects on the Isle of Man.’

The life of the driver used to power the units is 66,000 hours and after the useful life of the Philips LED, the individual residents will have a further 6,000 hours in which to determine whether to refurbish or replace the lights.

A local theatre in Sunnyvale, California has moved to a total LED lighting solution, which is already a major success.The venue’s previous lighting, installed in 1992, needed replacing. Staff considered three options - conventional (tungsten) only, a hybrid of both tungsten and LEDs, or all-LED. They assessed the needs of the theatre in order to weigh the three systems before purchasing an ETC Ion lighting control desk, as it could be used to handle any of the fixtures under discussion.

After being impressed by a Source Four LED demonstration, Sunnyvale technical coordinator, Bill Rupel ordered five units so his staff could experiment with them in typical production situations. ‘We worked them hard,’ said Rupel. ‘We used them as specials, for colour and black and white patterns, and we were popping lenses in them.’

After testing, staff agreed the LED system was viable for the lighting upgrade, choosing to install Source Four LEDs and Selador Desire D60 Lustr+ luminaires for front of house and on-stage lighting, and 40 Selador Classic LED battens to illuminate the cyclorama from above and below. They also added

shows in the morning, rehearsals throughout the day, and rehearsals and shows at night. All that leaves theatre staff with very little time to prep for each performance. Designers are further challenged because there is a rep plot that cannot be changed for different shows. The LED-only rig saves time. ‘No matter what the experience level is of the groups who come in, we can provide better customer service,’ said Rupel. ‘Our customers come in and want to do a show in a short amount of time, and they want it to look really good. I feel like we can do that better now.’

The new system has given a lot more colour flexibility to the venue too. The ETC LED luminaires feature the x7 Color System, which provides a nearly limitless range of coloured and white light by combining up to seven LED colours per luminaire, so lighting designers have been able to achieve looks they couldn’t with the previous system.

‘When someone wants green, you can light up the whole stage in green,’ agreed Rupel. ‘Once, our resident community theatre LD, Ed Hunter, created a grey sky that I just kept staring at. It was this look of an overcast day from the front light, and it was just so grey. There was also a murder scene where we flooded the stage with red. You’d get this gasp when it hit, because you’re not used to seeing that much saturation from every angle.’

The installation garnered an award of excellence from the California Parks and Recreation Society district, which recognised the move to an all-LED rig as a ‘best practice’ for municipal venues. Since the installation, electrical company, PG&E has approved a wide variety of ETC LED fixtures on its rebate list to help offset costs when retrofitting traditional tungsten theatrical fixtures.

‘This is a landmark event,’ said Mike Wunder of Wunder Lighting and Controls, ‘because no theatrical fixture has ever been approved for a rebate, and it’s also the first colour-changing LED to make the list.’

ENERGY EFFICIENT

A secondary school has cut its energy bills by more than 70 per cent after installing LED lighting.

Digiland LED Lighting, based in Telford, Shropshire, upgraded the school sports hall’s 450W high bay lighting to ultra-efficient 115W LEDs - delivering a much improved quality of light and significant energy savings.

The 115W fitting installed in the school’s sports hall has won two design awards in the past two years, and is certificated ball resistant making it an ideal choice for gymnasiums and sporting environments.

Beth Beasley of Digiland LED Lighting, who worked with Shropshire Council on the project, said: ‘Fitting LEDs is a quick and easy way for schools to improve the environment for students, while reducing the electricity bills at the same time, so it’s no wonder that LED lighting is getting more and more popular with schools.’

Staff at Lacon Childe School in Cleobury Mortimer, near Bridgnorth, are delighted with the results. The school’s site manager, Don Carter, feels the sports hall had been much improved by the new lights. He said: ‘Through considerable support from the local authority, we have been able to replace the old lights with a state-of-the-art LED lighting system. The new lights offer a much better light for all sporting activities and will be more eco-friendly, saving the school substantial funds in energy costs.’

Indoor farms grow crops sustainably, complimenting traditional field and greenhouse farming, but year-round availability comes at a price.

To reduce the energy and associated costs, Philips has partnered with Green Sense Farms (GSF), a Chicago-area commercial grower, to develop one of the largest indoor commercial farms in the US, using LED grow lights tailored to the specific crops. This innovative farming model allows the owners to harvest 20-25 times a year by using ‘light recipes’ optimised for their produce, and using 85 percent less energy. The result will be an increase in crop yields and reduced operating costs, while providing consumers with locally grown, fresh vegetables throughout the year.

Plants use certain wavelengths of light more efficiently. The advent of LED technology has enabled the fine-tuning of tailor-made light recipes optimised to the needs of specific crops. Working with research institutes, universities, growers and partners, Philips is able to meet a grower’s unique needs. Because LEDs run at cooler temperatures, they can be placed closer to the plants, ensuring complete uniform illumination of the plant.

‘Different plant types have different light needs, and working with forward thinking growers like GSF, Philips is building up a database of light recipes for different plant varieties,’ said Gus van der Feltz, director of city farm lighting at Philips. ‘GSF is using vertical hydroponic technology with Phillips LED growing lights, enabling them to do what no other grower can do: provide a consistent amount of high quality produce, year round. An installation of retrofit LED panels has not only transformed lighting levels for a food business, but has also proved its versatility for use in different ceiling systems.

Established in 1962, Winterbotham Darby is a fast-growing food business that predominantly supplies own-label chilled food to the major supermarket chains in the UK. The company also has a growing foodservice business that includes restaurant chains, sandwich outlets and food producers, and is targeting international growth through similar partnerships with overseas retailers.

As part of a recent upgrade to its offices at headquarters in Redhill, LED Eco Lights was commissioned to provide reliable retrofit lighting for the project.

Part of the refurbishment involved the removal of a wall between two offices to create a single, larger working area. This, in turn, necessitated upgrading the existing lighting system to provide consistent illumination throughout the new office space.

replace existing 56W lamps. In contrast to conventional ‘drop in’ versions, the panels are installed by pushing up into bespoke fixings. This was complicated by the presence of different ceiling systems used in the two original offices. However, the panels were successfully and swiftly installed with no difficulties.

‘Our two original offices relied on lighting of slightly different colours,’ explained Ian Render, Winterbotham Darby’s operations director, ‘but we now have fantastic consistency throughout our new enlarged office space, which has made a huge difference.

‘The whole area now looks brighter to make a truly pleasant working environment – and, due to the lower wattage LED lamps, our energy costs have reduced also.’

Providing a new experience for Canadian car wash users

LSI International (LSII) has provided a car wash with a difference for Sobeys’ Shell filling stations in Québec, Canada.

Users and onlookers can now enjoy a visually engaging and exciting experience with the company’s dynamic colour-changing lightBox scheme. To create the experience, LSII’s design team utilised advanced architectural show strategies; the space was divided into projection surfaces and treated independently to create a layered effect.

Inside the car wash, the back wall is fitted with LSII’s Shockwave Alfa video lights to illuminate the entire surface and be seen from a distance, while Shockwave Delta-2s beam down from all angles onto the vehicle, using its highlighted surface for a colourful ‘bubble and soap’ show from inside the vehicle. In addition, Shockwave Alfas were installed to highlight the water spray.

The combined effects create a fun and interactive experience. Adding to the

scene, each wash cycle has its own content and colour scheme.

The design team utilised Sobeys’ branding directives as a basis for the artistic direction. The result is a great balance between art, branding and commercial value.

Jonathan Labbee, COO of LSII, commented: ‘It’s nice to see that even in an industry that is traditionally conservative, some companies are willing to innovate and derive success from their willingness to be different.’

Home to Rudyard Kipling in the early 20th Century, Bateman’s – now a museum to the great man – has undergone a 21st Century lighting upgrade

Commissioned by the National Trust, Mike Blacker of Blacker Design was asked to mastermind a refurbishment plan for lighting in the museum area of Bateman’s, the home of author Rudyard Kipling, near Burwash in the beautiful Sussex Weald. Bateman’s is now dedicated to the memories of Kipling’s life and work.

The LEDs emit no damaging UV and minimal heat, all of which will add to the protection and longevity of the display contents – a combination of books, papers, medals, pottery, and fabrics.

The other huge advantage of fitting LED lighting is, of course, the power saving. The previous lighting consumed 50W per case … a figure dramatically reduced to just 4W with the new scheme.

CLD’s chairman, Nigel Howes explained that CLD and Blacker Design have collaborated on a couple of previous projects, one of them involving reconditioning lighting at Winston Churchill’s former house, Chartwell - also for the National Trust.

The brief for this one was to modernise the cases – designed by Kipling’s daughter, Elsie and almost unchanged for 40 years - but keep their structural integrity and classic look. The project also entailed the removal of the previous lighting system, which took up a large amount of space, was hot, noisy and involved projectors slung beneath the cases and unwieldy trails of cabling.

Howes and Blacker installed an extrusion along the front top corner of the cabinets, on wooden support legs, and matched to the existing dark wood of the cabinet, to which the LED strip is fitted. Adjustable powder coated steel brackets at each end allow for rotation, so the light source is completely concealed but can still be focussed.

When Blacker needed a neat, energy efficient lighting solution to complete the modernisation of a number of period exhibition display cases in one of the upstairs rooms, he approached lighting specialist, CLD Distribution for assistance. The collaboration saw CLD design and install a bespoke slim-line warm white LED strip - made from Osram LEDs - into each of the cabinets of varying sizes. This illuminates the contents in a fabulous crisp, clear

The brackets have slots to allow access for the connecting wires and the wooden uprights are routed to provide a cable channel so wiring is near invisible, as are the discreet LED power supplies fitted underneath each cabinet. The LEDs can all be individually dimmed if required.

Each case is a different size, and some have multiple sections, so all the LED fittings were individually constructed on site. However, the flexibility of the design ensured this process was relatively straightforward.

Blacker Design provided new bases and shallower sloping panels upholstered in conservation grade fabric to complete the transformation of the display cases, breathing new life into them and adding more scope for the future as larger objects can be included.

Nigel Howes commented: ‘It was a real pleasure to work with Mike again, and also on such a special project. The challenges of the initial design and its need to be invisible took some brain teasing, but once we found the solution, everything was really smooth and we’re delighted with the results.’

Clothing retailer, Primark was keen to maintain the appearance of its flagship Cologne store while at the same time increasing energy efficiency. The company tasked LAPD lighting consultants with the responsibility to make it happen.

LAPD approached Architainment Lighting to custom build a number of control enclosures, and to provide technical support in order to illuminate the RGB triangle-formation feature, visible from the exterior of the building.

Architainment’s technical services team custom built 53 control enclosures, each containing between one and three eldoLED drivers, with each driver controlling one RGB frame programmed to Primark’s corporate pantone. The enclosures are controlled by a main unit, with a Pharos TPC mounted in the door, a Pharos LPC1 located inside, a 4-way POE Ethernet switch, and two Artistic License DMX rail splits.

prior to shipping to allow for a seamless installation process. Custom labelling offered a simple and fast solution for contractors to be able to immediately recognise which frames connected to which driver output on installation; the labels also corresponded with CAD drawings to demonstrate where each enclosure was to be positioned throughout the store.

In addition, Architainment’s team flew to Cologne for a site visit during the final few days of installation, to fully commission and test the system and adjust programming to meet the clients needs and requirements.

T5 fluorescent lighting, in the form of the Task T5 was utilised within the general areas to transform the space. The fittings were hidden in the bulkhead in

order to supply indirect, ambient light. This worked well given the client’s wish to keep the two large ceiling recesses free of fittings.

The 16.5m wide, backlit pano-rama was created with two large format light boxes manufactured in multiple sections, which were joined together on site in the ground level showroom apartment.

Socrates’ production manager, Bambi Montgomery explained: ‘These two large light boxes were created for the show apartment in the marketing suite, for the new Canaletto apartments currently under construction in City Road, London. ‘They feature the views buyers will get from both the balcony via a daylight visual, and the bedroom, which features a nighttime scene.’

She continued: ‘The curved balcony light box was manufac-

tured to extremely exact tolerances, and on arrival from Germany, both fitted perfectly. W&Co pulled out all stops to meet the tight deadlines set for both manufacture and installation and we were extremely happy with the finished product.’

Canaletto launched with an impressive 3D-mapping spectacular on to the side of the building, with W&Co’s light boxes appearing in the launch video, helping to sell the luxury apartments to prospective buyers.

Push The Button (PTB) has recently completed the lighting element of a new backstage artists lounge at the Barbican Concert Hall, London. Part of the Barbican Centre, the concert hall is home to the London Symphony Orchestra, and also hosts a wide range of other concerts, productions and events.

‘The existing backstage area that greeted those performing at the Hall was quite cold and uninviting,’ commented PTB’s Nick Ewins. ‘It needed some TLC to provide the welcoming and

relaxing atmosphere that the great artists who play here deserve before and after a concert.’

PTB was selected by the Barbican to explore how lighting might help transform the existing space. The company presented a number of options, aiming to create a versatile lighting system that could vary the intensity, mood and atmosphere of the lounge to suit different events and visitors.

The final system accomplishes just that, allowing the Barbican’s staff to switch between a wide range of pre-configured lighting scenes that use colour and intensity to alter the feel of the room at the push of a button. When

required, the system allows direct control of the individual elements of the room’s lighting, allowing specific new looks to be created.

‘We’re really pleased with the new lighting system,’ commented the Barbican’s Yvette Chin, ‘and we’ve already received some great feedback from artists using the space. The refurbished lounge and backstage area is a great improvement, and has been completely transformed by the lighting.’

To achieve this, PTB used versatile, efficient LED lighting fixtures from Pulsar and GDS, together with a powerful, yet easy-to-use control system from Pharos.

‘Our aim was to create a system that could dramatically alter the feel of the room, without the lighting system itself ever becoming obvious, and with the technology being unobtrusive enough that anyone can use it,’ explained PTB’s Andy Phillips. ‘The products and support from all of the companies we worked with let us do exactly that.’

A key part of the brief for a new family home in Richmond, was that the technology used had to be intuitive, yet versatile to support the hospitality and entertainment requirements of the family and their guests.

The owners worked with smart home consultant, Inspired Dwellings, PBA Architects, and John Cullen Lighting to achieve their goal. The main challenge was combining the design and technological requirements of the various family members, to create both a cosy family home, as well as a backdrop for a wide range of social events.

‘From the multi-media, lighting, security and irrigation systems, to HVAC and insect control, the

Due to the scale of the project, two HomeWork QS processors were installed in panels in the basement and upper floor, and a range of Lutron dimming modules, DALI interfaces, third party input and output contact closures and relays incorporated into these, and an additional panel, on the ground floor. Barrett commented: ‘The end result is not only traditional lighting mood scene creation, and control of all the window treatments, but thanks to HomeWorks QS’s ability

to integrate DMX, DALI, P-10, mains dimming, switched loads and contact closures, the home’s Maglocks, indoor and outdoor water features and even insect repellent have been integrated into the scheme!’

The younger residents wanted state-of-the-art technology in every room. As well as incorporating the latest in multi-media technology throughout, colour changing LEDs were installed in the main bathrooms and entertainment spaces to colour wash the white walls and add vibrancy to the scheme, whatever the event. Inset colour changing LED lighting was also used throughout the pool area to create a night-time sky, as well as ambient swimming modes. All of these features were integrated into the home’s Control4 touch screens and Lutron International seeTouch keypads.

The younger members of the family wanted to bring the latest technology into their play spaces and bedrooms. With this in mind, full integration of the lighting was incorporated within the home’s two executive tree houses.

The home has floor to ceiling, neutrally coloured blinds throughout, which are integrated into the room controls at both the touchscreen and keypad level, ensuring a discreet backdrop that provides simple, yet highly effective, natural light control throughout.

The new lighting is managed by Daintree Networks’ ControlScope, a simple to install and manage wireless smart building control system that offers additional savings while improving employee productivity and overall comfort. Common areas are divided into zones, defined both by proximity and activity. Automated on/off switching in all zones can be scheduled and controlled from a central graphical console accessible through the web.

Daylight sensing was added to zones with large window banks and skylights, in order to take maximum advantage of natural light when available. Motion sensors are set in zones where traffic varies through the day, such as the break room, enabling lights to operate automatically

as rooms are occupied or vacated. Wall switches in virtually all areas let users temporarily override the automated system. For example, a staff member working late can turn the light on at the wall switch, while someone using a projector to give a presentation during scheduled work hours can turn the lights off.

Every fixture is individually wirelessly enabled, giving the company an exceptional level of flexibility in its lighting use. Fixture-by-fixture settings allow fine-tuning for the specific tasks performed in each area. As workflow or space usage changes, the lighting plan can be easily re-adjusted from the central control site. Personal remote controls in office areas give individual employees more autonomy in their personal work environments. Each employee can set the light level of the fixture directly over his/her desk to

the level they find most comfortable to do their work, and adjust it throughout the day as they please.

Because the new lighting would affect the working environment of virtually every staff member in the office, United Stationers approached its introduction carefully. ‘Communication was the key,’ explained Ted Pinnow. ‘We posted all of the proposed changes months in advance. We did a small room to begin with, then had the staff walk through and see what they thought.’

By enlisting the support of employees from the outset, United Stationers not only gained buy-in from its staff, but actually built excitement. ‘We needed their involvement to make this right,’ said Pinnow. ‘A project like this can work out fine financially, but if the folks hate the end result, you’ve failed miserably.’

Nearly half of the Sacramento facility’s lighting is now controlled by staff, using personal remote dimmers. Spot checks indicate that their lighting preferences vary widely, but the ability to control their own workspace has been embraced universally.

Dave Bisbee of SMUD, said: ‘Typical old school lighting was a three-lamp fixture. You could run one, two or three lamps, or turn them all off. The wall switch affected the entire workspace. You might compromise, but nobody won. One of the great benefits for having this level of control is that people who work in cubicle environments have much greater satisfaction when they can control the light over their heads.’

Through ControlScope, United Stationers now has a floor plan of its space, accessed via the Internet that allows the status of lighting facility-wide to be checked and re-set with a simple point-and-click.

Bisbee added: ‘Historically, the only interaction companies have had with their lighting was a wall switch and a bill. Control was a black box. What we’re hoping is that these kinds of control systems will be a game changer for how companies think about and interact with lighting, which is a big part of how they use energy.’

‘The project is a perfect example of how integrating controls can dramatically improve the results of a comprehensive lighting retrofit,’ said Dallas Buchanan, VP of sales and business development, Daintree Networks. ‘Through our work with fixture manufacturers like Cree, we are making it simple for commercial offices to benefit from the combination of efficient fixtures and advanced wireless controls.’

allowing the space to be used as a corridor or an art gallery,’ added Bainbridge. ‘There were a number of considerations to assess on the controls side of this project – it needed to function for use as a corridor, be customisable and design-led for use as a gallery, and we had to address the huge variations in natural light along the area.’

Dependant on the art displays, the required light level projecting on to them varies according to time of day and ambience required. Spectral designed a control platform to increase the flexibility at the college when deciding on exhibition placements, by allowing staff to dim and brighten the spots in individual zones as required.

The setup is linked to a DALI network and connects to a processor that integrates with the college’s pre-existing IP network, effectively removing any disruptive

hardware installation as, with the software having been designed, the platform is accessible on any of the college’s computers via a standard web browser.

Although accessible across the campus, the system is protected to ensure that authorised people have access to the information. The brief from the college also included the requirement for mobile control of the system to recall scenes locally, to ensure that levels were optimised for exhibits on an individual basis. To meet this requirement, Spectral created an iPad app.

This level of control allows each section of the corridor to be adjusted locally, with each section getting the optimum light levels for each piece of work.

Taking creative control of a college gallery space

In partnership with McCarthy Bainbridge design consultancy, Spectral Lighting has designed bespoke LED luminaires and a controls package to transform a corridor-cum-gallery space at The University of Creative Arts (UCA), Farnham. The space had a dark wood ceiling lit by a handful of spotlights. As part of an on-going refurbishment programme, it has been remodelled with a new coffer ceiling, which creates a continuous, flowing perspective and gallery ‘feel’.

‘The original corridor was a poorly lit and gloomy space, which displayed some artwork but was primarily used as a transit route to teaching spaces,’ explained Tony Bainbridge from McCarthy Bainbridge. ‘The floor-to-ceiling height was very limited - resulting in a void of less than 110mm being available – meaning we had to choose our lighting solution carefully.’

With a new ceiling in place, Spectral was tasked with fitting recessed coffer luminaires. This required a custom solution that could be discretely embedded in the visible vertical facia. UCA Farnham also required a lighting control system, which Spectral supplied. With a large section of the space facing floor-to-ceiling windows, the lumen levels needed to be controlled to reduce artificial light when required, without affecting a series of spotlights, which light the artwork.

A life recovered from the ocean waves, was the brief for lighting Liverpool’s latest nightspot

Bespoke manufacturer, Chantelle Lighting has helped to light up Liverpool’s hottest nightspot. The Smugglers Cove, which is a favourite with local celebrities, is located in a 19th Century Grade 1 Listed, former warehouse building on Liverpool’s historic Albert Dock.

Chantelle worked with Paul Danson Imagineering to create a theatrical, maritime-themed interior, with all of the fittings designed to look as if they had been reclaimed from the sea and brought back by past travellers.

Using genuine maritime materials, including driftwood, rope and empty rum bottles, to create a treasure trove of nautical-inspired fittings, the company created a number of bespoke fittings for the new venue, including one using a genuine ship’s anchor.

Anthony Holly, managing director of Nelson-based Chantelle Lighting, said: ‘By hanging netting, rope, shells and other items found in the water to the anchor, we created a truly unique lighting feature, which looks like it has just been pulled up from the water in the Albert Dock! The result was a venue which looks like it is full of genuine artefacts, brought home by smugglers and sailors.’

Sarah de Freitas from Paul Danson Imagineering added: ‘Anthony is fantastic at listening to a brief and then sourcing the exact items you are imagining, and turning crazy ideas into something realistic. I love the end result, especially the Baronial room which, with its huge chandelier, would be the perfect location for a ship’s captain returning from his travels to have a drink of rum.’

Metronomy’s latest tour lighting takes 1970’s music TV as inspiration

Ed Warren has once again designed the band, Metronomy’s lighting - this time for the launch of the new album, Love Letters - exclusively using Robe moving lights, and culminating in a specular show at London’s Brixton Academy.

Before the start of the tour, he and Oscar Cash came up

with the idea of making the set resemble a low-budget 1970’s music TV show.

Warren is inspired by James Turrell’s light art, and wanted to have a canvas that offered multiple contrasts for lighting.

He decided to make the band risers, diamond shaped, down lit with LED tape, also lighting the

fronts of keyboards with LED tape. The set pieces and backdrops were also lit separately – so before a single light was added to the rig, he had 12 surfaces, which could be lit, textured and coloured.

An adaptable floor package was supplied by GLS for all of the venues, comprising eight Robe ROBIN LEDBeam 100s, six

For the larger venues on the itinerary, this was boosted with a U-shaped angled truss in the air, rigged with eight ROBIN Pointes, seven ROBIN LEDWash 600s, four strobes and three mirror-balls, together with a V-shaped truss at the front yielding six ROBIN 600E

Spots and another six LEDWash 600s. The LEDBeam 100s are used for key lighting.

On the downstage edge of the deck, four Pointes were added, and upstage behind the backdrop were an extra four LEDWash 600s and three strobes, for backlighting the double-sided backdrop.

The full production rig will be used for the band’s French arena shows, although most European shows will utilise just the essential floor package, combined with house lights.

It’s an LED-orientated show, with the band lit in a variety of colours from below, and from the sides. The LEDWash 300s onstage are used for firing up the backdrop and washing the set pieces and the stage at low level from the sides, with their fabulous array of colours.

The overhead LEDWash 600s are used for more conventional stage washes and for beaming out into the audience. The Pointes are his primary profile luminaire. The beams are wide enough for them to act as regular spot lights with gobos, etc. however they can also become very effective washes, and then morph into being concentrated beam effects. When they have the full rig installed, he uses the Pointes strategically for optimum impact.

The 600E Spots on the front truss are used for precise key lighting. Warren strives to keep any lighting spillage to a minimum, especially with this style of show. The LEDWash 600s on the front truss are used for general stage washing, to highlight the audience, and for the backdrop.

Even accountants need to let their hair down occasionally, it seems. And when they do, they do it in style

Technical production and rental specialist, Central Presentations (CPL) supplied the design and full technical production – video, lighting, audio, set - for the 2014 TaxAssist Accountants’ AGM. The event was staged in the Caernarfon Suite at Celtic Resort & Conference Centre in Newport, Wales.

CPL’s team was headed by Jimmy Smith, working to a brief that required a clean, contemporary conference environment for the daytime sessions, which could be quickly transformed into a glamorous evening location for a gala dinner and awards event. With adaptability in mind, he designed a practical and highly effective solution to meet the client’s needs.

Behind the stage a 42m-wide starcloth backdrop was installed and in front of that the set was built. Utilising the in-house flying points, trusses were flown to provide positions for lighting, audio and projectors.

Twelve Source Four Studio LEDs and six 1200W fresnels on the front truss covered all the required stage washes and key lighting for the lectern position.

Two trusses left and right of the stage were used to rig eight Clay Paky Sharpy beam lights on each side. Another five Sharpies on the deck completed the moving light elements, and Miltec Battons plus Core Point30 LED uplighters augmented the stage wash.

All the data feeds for the lighting fixtures were run via wireless DMX links into one of CPL’s new Avolites Tiger Touch consoles. Also patched into this were the 39 x in-house Robe Club Scan 250 CT wash lights which are traditionally used in the venue for illuminating the tables.

‘The challenge was definitely the timescale,’ said Smith, adding that their crew was selected, not just for their technical abilities, but also for their

personalities and ability to stay cheerful throughout a very long and gruelling day!’

In November 2013, Arla Foods started the largest, most efficient and environmentally advanced fresh milk processing facility in the world. The 70-acre sustainable plant in Aylesbury is planned as a zero carbon facility, and incorporates innovative construction techniques, process technologies and cutting-edge renewable energy solutions.

Of particular consideration was the lighting, which has an important impact on the sustainability of the plant. The new facility includes mains and emergency lighting solutions

from Eaton’s Cooper Lighting and Safety business, across all production facilities and office areas, which is expected to save the dairy 104 tonnes of CO2, contributing significantly towards its sustainability goals.

Cooper Lighting and Safety was selected as the supplier for this project as it had the ability to supply the entire internal lighting range for the complete facility.

Paul Gregory, specification sales director at Cooper Lighting and Safety commented: ‘Arla Foods had three key drivers for lighting. The first was to reduce

energy consumption, the second was to reduce maintenance, and finally, the light had to be excellent quality, thus providing a better environment for the colleagues.’

Eaton evaluated all energy sources and recommended lights fit for purpose, for example LED’s in the cold environments and fluorescent lighting elsewhere. ‘The solution includes state-of-the-art technology and market leading products. In addition, the full emergency lighting system was designed to deliver the right products suitable for the building’s needs,’ explained Gregory.

applications, Litex LED’s multi-die arrays combined with excellent thermal management and driver compatibility ensures a long and virtually maintenance-free life. The bespoke chip quantity configuration reduced the number of wiring points and quantity required while still delivering a compliant lighting design.

For processing areas, a bespoke 4 Industry high bay luminaire was supplied. Sealed to IP65, the lamp provides a high degree of protection against the ingress dust and water, and was modified to include an internal reflector for increased performance. The luminaires also include controls for presence detection and daylight.

A CEAG system was chosen as the emergency lighting system. This provides Arla with inverter backed-up emergency lighting while allowing automatic testing and flexibility to change the emergency fittings from non-maintained to maintained with a press of a button. There are four inverter units spread across the site, all controlled from a single computer.

Emergency luminaires include a variety of LED solutions from Litex high bay in the cold store and process areas to IP65 LED for the low-level process areas. The offices were fitted with 1w LED emergency Micropoint 2 fittings. This small luminaire combines the role of emergency light with

background or security light, adjustable between settings with a touch-sensitive button. Both IP65 and Micropoint 2 luminaires were supplied with open area escape route optics, keeping quantities to a minimum while still complying with design requirements.
