WHAT’S INSIDE:

Whether you’re just starting down the path of switching to natural cosmetics, or you’re ready to overhaul it all, I’m here to help guide you through the process so you can finally feel empowered to make the very best choices for you.

I created this Toolkit from years of research, trial and error, so you don’t have to go through all that hassle.

Having worked for a decade doing makeup backstage at Fashion Week alongside the very best in the biz in New York, Milan and Paris, I saw how models’ skin became hyper-sensitized to “high-quality” professional brands of makeup — but no one could seem to explain these severe reactions.

AT the time, I myself was still struggling with “teenage” acne at the age of 30. However, once I stopped attacking my skin with harsh cleansers and treatments, and switched to gentle, safe natural alternatives my skin was clear like never before!

After more research, I became convinced that a lot of the traditional ingredients used in cosmetics are harming both our health and our environment, in addition to utilizing unnecessary animal testing.

That’s what prompted me to go take an enormous risk, bucking the mainstream fashion community and position myself as a leader in the green beauty.

So in 2011 I started the first iteration of GreenBeautyTeam.com, when it wasn’t the cool thing to do!

What’s made it worth it, has been the honor of helping thousands of people like you (in person and online) be healthier, feel amazing, and look fantastic — while supporting ethical products.

Green beauty is not a “black and white” space with clear cut definitions and rules.

I began using the term “Healthy Beauty” to better capture the multi-faceted journey of inner and outer well-being and conscious consumption.

I don’t claim to know everything, and I’m honest about my journey because all of us are learning and it’s not always easy.

Just know that you don’t need to go it alone. You’ve got me on, and by your side.

Through my free articles and videos, personal lessons, online courses, and anything else I offer — the goal is to make it meaningful and valuable for you to help you cut through the confusion, and step into the vibrant healthy and beauty you deserve — at every age.

I’m excited that you’ve downloaded this Toolkit, because it’s an awesome first stepping in helping you clear out the toxic junk from your makeup bag and stop being taken advantage of by “greenwashers” who’ve selling you a bunch of lies about what’s really inside your beauty products.

So let’s get started!

HOW TO USE YOUR TOOLKIT This Toss the Toxins Toolkit will help you get started banishing toxic beauty products from your life forever!

With the tools below, you’ll learn how to be a smart shopper and find healthier products easily, whether you choose to start doing your Toxin Toss in small steps or you are ready for one big “dump and replace”.

It’s important to note I use the word “avoid” because there are lots of studies that speak both sides of the safety for any ingredient.

There is no “perfect product” that satisfies everyone’s needs and values. Some won’t have the right ingredients for your skin’s needs, some won’t have packaging that’s planet friendly, some choose carmine over synthetics and therefore aren’t “vegan”.

So you must read, research, learn and ultimately decide with your gut what feels like the right thing for you, and I hope this helps you get started!

THE TOSS IT CHECKLIST Below are the items that most people use daily that have a high frequency of use, and/or are applied to large areas of the skin.

I suggest you start what feels the most comfortable to swap out first. You certainly don’t have to do a total overhaul all at once.

The goal here is to create less of a toxic burden on your body and it begins with one action step.

As you check off one item, you can move on to the next.

Skin Careface washbody wash face moisturizerbody moisturizer

Hair Careshampooconditionerstyling products

Makeup foundation lip balmlipstick

Personal Carehand washhand sanitizer (watch out for ‘triclosan’)deodorant/anti-perspirant toothpastefeminine hygiene productslaundry detergent (whatever you wash your clothes and linens in touches your skin!)

IDENTIFYING AND AVOIDING TOXINS I assume you’ve made it this far because it’s now obvious that you’d want to avoid any products which have potentially harmful chemicals in them.

My Toxic Ingredient Glossary offers explanations on all of the ingredients we think are worth staying away from. It’s good to give this a read, but don’t be paralyzed by it.

BACK, TOP AND BOTTOM TEST You don’t have to be a scientist to start scanning the back of the bottles and packages before you buy.

It does take a bit more time and effort, but think about the reward you’ll be getting in the form of more peace of mind for yourself and your loved ones.

Lots of manufacturers make a big deal about the natural ingredients they use on the front of their package that gives consumers a false sense of security.

But a lot of times those few natural ingredients are sandwiched between really unhealthy, not-at-all-natural chemicals.

So here’s an easy test you can do when inspecting a new product. I call it the “Back, Top and Bottom Test”.

BACK Start by looking for the product’s ingredients list.

If you’re going to the store and you need reading glasses, get ‘em on! The ingredient lists are often tiny.

Generally, you’ll find the full list on the back of the package, but it can appear on the side too. Or you can make your life even easier and just do an online search ahead of time.

TOP Scan the top section of ingredients listed to see if they include any of the following:

• Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate • Petrochemicals - Propylene Glycol, Parraffin, Mineral Oil, Butylene Glycol, Isopropyl Alcohol

and Petrolatum

BOTTOM Now skip down towards the bottom of the ingredient listing and look to see if they include any of the following:

• Fragrance/Parfum• DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (momoethnanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine)• Parabens - Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Methylparaben, and Ethylparaben

If you see any of those ingredients anywhere, then put the product down and move on! There’s no point in even looking at the rest.

TOXIC INGREDIENTS TO AVOID SHOPPING GUIDE

To make things easier, I made you a wallet-sized, printable guide of the “major offenders” to avoid next time you’re in the cosmetics aisle.

SHOPPING RESOURCES

The most obvious places to find greener beauty products are at a natural health food store and online shops.

Some naturally-focused retailers can be great resources because they’ve done the ingredient research ahead of time and can offer tips on what to buy that’s right for you. Some of my favorite independent retail stores you can visit within the U.S. and Canada, with a few select online options include:

RETAIL STORES National & Int’l:

US East Coast:AILLEA BLK + GRNCredo BeautyCAP BeautyIntegrity Botanicals (online only)

US West Coast:Aillea Beauty HeroesCredo BeautyDetox MarketPharmaca

Canada East Coast:Truth Beauty Co.Detox Market Canada

Canada West Coast:The Green KissGreen and Pure

I had a long-standing relationship with Whole Foods Market and value their discerning beauty selection. However, it’s come to my attention recently that Amazon (their new parent company) markets on white supremacists websites.

New stores are popping up regularly online and offline, so make sure to explore on your own!

You might be surprised to know that your local drug store, beauty boutique or super store carries a few brands worth checking out too, but don’t expect the sales staff to be very helpful when it comes to discerning between traditional and natural products.
