The first electric light used for illumination purpose in Japan was lit on March 25, 1878. It was a Dubosq arc lamp, switched on at a banquet held in celebration of the opening of the central office of Tokyo Central Telegraph’s Station (Now, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications).

The engineers of this event were Professor W.E. Aryton of Imperial College of Engineering (Faculty of Engineering, Tokyo University), and his colleague Mr. Ichisuke Fujioka who could later go on found Hakunetu-Sha & Co. Ltd. The very first lighting of an incandescent light took place on June 25, 1884 at the commencement ceremony of the railroad line running from Ueno to Takasaki.

Twenty four incandescent lights with one arc light placed in the centre were lit to welcome the Japa-nese Emperor and Empress, who made an appear-ance.

Professor Ichisuke Fujioka is the person credited for the development of the incandescent bulbs in Japan.

In order to develop an incandescent bulb domesti-cally, he was appointed Chief Engineer at Tokyo Electric Illuminating Company (Now, Tokyo Electric Power Company). He poured his energy into the development and management of the various electri-cal works there, and began working towards achiev-ing the much desired domestic incandescent bulb. Professor Ichisuke Fujioka could be called the father of the incandescent bulbs in Japan.

On April 1, 1890, Professor Fujioka in cooperation with Masakazu Miyoshi, one of the most successful electric appliance manufacturers at that time, estab-lished Hakunetu-Sha & Co, Ltd. in Tokyo.

The result of this merger was the official production of incandescent bulbs in Japan.

Hakunetu-Sha is now called TOSHIBA LIGHTING & TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION which today is a leader in lighting technology.

In 1879, Edison succeeds in producing the first carbon lamp with a filament made from carbon-ized cotton thread. This was the first lamp to be put into factory production by Edison Lamp Co. in 1880.

In 1959, Zubler invents a small, highly efficient lamp in America. By enclosing halogen material inside the quartz glass tube of the lamp, he was able to prevent blackening of the lamp. This long life lamp was made commercially available in 1961.

The 6 great inventions in lampsSince the invention of the commercial carbon lamp by Thomas A Edison in 1879, there have been many refinementsand inventions; but the most notable among these are “The Six Great Lamp Inventions” that have been credited with contributing more than any other to lamp development. Two of these six world-famous inventions were brought about by TOSHIBA.

1. Commercial Carbon Lamp (USA, Edison, 1879)

Drawn Tungsten Filament lamp is invented by Coolidge in America in 1910. The appearance of this drawn tungsten filament led to the ensuing rapid development of light bulbs.

In 1913 America, Langmuir invents the so-called gas-filled lamp, filling an inert gas that does not react with tungsten inside the lamp so as to prevent evaporation due to heat from the tungsten filament. Consequently, it makes lamp life longer significantly.

In 1921, Toshiba's Jun-ichi Miura invents the Coiled-coil filament by coiling the single tungsten coil once more. This Coiled-coil filament decreases heat loss, and brings about an improvement in the lamp's efficiency.

Along with an improvement in the brightness of the lamp, glare becomes a problem. In 1925, in order to solve this problem, the world's first lamp to have a frosted glass interior is invented by TOSHIBA Kitsuzo Fuwa.

6.Tungsten Halogen Lamp (USA-G.E. E.Z.Zubler, 1959)

In our efforts to help to reduce energy consumption and to conserve our Earth’s precious natural resources, Toshiba has developed the NEW NEOBALL Z compact fluorescent lamp which helps to conserve energy by using only 20% of the electric power needed to operate 60 watts incandescent lamp. This means the Toshiba Neoball will deliver 60 watts of light output while using only 12 watts of electricity.

In addition, since 80% of the energy used in a 60w lamp is lost in the form of heat, resulting in more energy wastage.

The NEW NEOBALL Z’s are not only as bright as incandescent lamps but also will operate considerably cooler due to less power consumption.

Toshiba is a prime mover in the design and development of new and various types of bulbs, responding to the growing diversity and sophistication of tomorrow’s needs.

Consumers have continually asked for “long life lamps” with greater lumens outputs and the NEW NEOBALL Z provides this benefit.

With a life hour rating of 10,000 hours, there will be less time, labor and expense spent on burnt out lamps replacements when you begin using the Toshiba compact fluorescent lamps. The new TOSHIBA plastic Glow Starter has a strong resin encasement which makes it moisture-proof, provides perfect electrical insulation and is heat-resistant.

The 2 dents on the top indicate the positions of the 2 base contactors for easyinstallation, even in darkness.

The glow starter pre-heats the filaments automatically after the switch is turned on, so the fluorescent lamp lights immediately.

Toshiba manufactures a variety of glow starters to suit different types of fluorescent lamps.

Never use the lamp in �xtures with circuits, emergency lighting �xtures, guide light, or HID �xtures for mercury, sodium, or metal halide lamps. Otherwise, you run the risk of breaking the lamp, generating smoke, or damaging the ballast. Dimmer function: varies the brightness of incandescent lamps.• Never use the lamp with a DC power supply. Open �xtures should be used. • These lamps are not suited for using in situations requiring frequent turning on and o� (e.g., by movement sensors), since this reduces lamp life. • Use lamp with the voltage speci�ed. Using a lamp with the incorrect voltage may reduce lamp life or cause faulty illumination.• Lamps other than inverter lamps (electronic ballast type) must be used at the correct power supply frequency for the region (50Hz or 60Hz). Using an incorrect power supply frequency may reduce lamp life or cause faulty illumination.• Lamps with built-in electronic ballast (EFD, EFT, EFG, and EFA) Use such lamps at ambient temperatures in the range from 5°C to 40°C. Using such lamps at temperatures below 5°C or above 40°C may cause faulty starting or reduce lamp life and luminous �ux.• Do not use lamps in extremely hot locations (e.g., near heaters). Otherwise, you run the risk of reducing lamp life or faulty illumination.• Do not spray insecticides near a lamp. Otherwise, you may run the risk of lamp discolouration, breakage, or degradation.• If the lamp �ickers repeatedly or do not illuminate correctly, turn it o� immediately and replace the lamp. Otherwise, you run the risk of the lamp overheating.• Note that interference may be experience when using a lamp near audio or visual equipment such as a radio or TV set. In such case, move the source of interference at least 1m away from the lamp.• Using a lamp near an infrared remote control TV may cause the remote control to malfunction.• Lamp requires a short warm up period to reach full light output.• The brightness and appearance of colour may vary slightly for about 20 minutes after the lamp is turned on.• Precautions on �xture design: Fixtures should not be designed so as to subject the lamp to constant drafts of air (e.g., �xtures also serving as ventilation holes). Moreover, �xtures should not be located where the lamp is subject to constant drafts of air. This may result in reduced luminous �ux.• It may not be possible to use with card key systems such as those in hotel rooms, Note that lamp life may be reduced when used with card key systems that currently use incandescent lamps. Contact Toshiba with details of the system in use.• Do not use with automatic switches (e.g., movement sensors) or semiconductor switches (e.g., time delay switches) except for bimetallic light sensor switches. Otherwise, you may run the risk of reducing lamp life or �ickering.• Do not use lamps with �xtures that have only a small gap between the lamp and re�ector. Otherwise, you may run the risk of excessively high temperature and reducing lamp life.• Always use the speci�ed wattage lamp with the corresponding �xtures (such as a socket, choke, and glow starter). • Always turn the power o� before installing, removing, or cleaning. In addition to the risk of electric shock, UV lamps (germicidal lamps) present the risk of eye injury, damage to eyesight, and skin in�ammation.• Never expose the naked eye to light from germicidal lamps. Safety glasses or sunglasses must be worn if work involves looking at the lamp while the lamp is on.• Do not expose the skin to UV (sterilizing) light from germicidal lamps, either direct or re�ected. • Circular lamps: Do not allow the lamp holder to spring back onto the lamp when installing. Doing so may break the lamp. • Do not allow the lamp on/o� cord to spring back onto the lamp or become entwined with the lamp. Doing so may break the lamp.• Pre-heat start �uorescent lamps: Do not use in rapid-start lamp �xtures. Doing so may result in overheating. Use in pre-heat starter-type lamp �xtures.• Rapid-start �uorescent lamps: Do not use in starter-type lamp �xtures. Doing so may result in overheating. Use in rapid-start lamp �xtures.• Always use a lamp with the correct tube diameter when using waterproof �xtures. Failure to do so may result in loss of waterproo�ng and current leakage. Check the correct lamp tube diameter for the �xtures.• Do not drop or strike (subject to load), subject to excessive force, or scratch lamps. (Take particular care when cleaning �xtures.) Lamp breakage may result in injury. The safety of long 110W lamps can be improved by holding the centre of the lamps to prevent dropping. • Do not use in �ammable environments (areas where gasoline, �ammable spray, thinners, lacquer, or powder are present). Doing so may result in �re or explosion. Use an explosion proof �xture.• Always use lamps of the speci�ed watt ratings with the corresponding �xtures (such as socket, ballast, and glow starter). Doing otherwise may result in overheating or smoking, or the lamp may fail to illuminate. Check the lamp rating (size) indicated on the lamp �xture. • Never touch lamps while they are illuminated or immediately after they are switched o�. Doing so may result in burns. Use of other lamp �xtures may result in current leakage or dropping.• Do not use lamps in locations subject to shock or vibration. Use in such locations may cause lamps to drop and shutter.• Do not paint lamps. Doing so may result in breakage or overheating. If colored illumination is required, please use a color lamp. • Use a sealed lamp �xture in dusty environment. Use of other �xtures in such environment may result in overheating, reduced service life, �re, or explosion. An explosion proof �xture should be used in explosive or �ammable dust environments. • Do not use in locations where colour fading is unavoidable (especially when using germicidal lamps). Items exposed to UV (sterilizing) light may fade or discolour. Use a lamp �tted with a UV- blocking �lm. In such environments, note that some fading may occur even when the lamp is �tted with a UV- blocking �lm.• Do not use germicidal lamps close to plants. Stunted growth may result.• Circular lamps: The base is designed to move slightly, but should not be turned with excessive force. Attempts to do so may result in breakage.• Rapid- start �uorescent lamps: Do not use with light �xtures with inadequate heat resistance, such as �xtures with translucent covers, or with power supplies susceptible to voltage surges. Use of such �xtures may result in overheating. Do not use “Watt brighter” energy-saving lamps.• Watt Brighter FL40SS/37, FLR40S/M/36, and FLR110H/A/100. These may not work in emergency lighting �xtures or guide lights. Always check the �xture speci�cations plate to ensure use of the correct lamps. They can be used if energy-saving lamp types are indicated on the lamp �xture speci�cations plate.• Use the correct �xture (ballast) for the power supply frequency. The incorrect frequency may result in persisting lamp �icker, the ends may glow red and not illuminate correctly, and the �xture may overheat. Replace the ballast if the �xture has been transferred from another location. Contact your Toshiba retailer for details. Ballast replacement is not necessary with inverter lamp �xtures.• Watt Brighter pre-heat start �uorescent lamps: Use in temperature range of 5°C to 40°C. Watt Brighter rapid-start �uorescent lamps: Use in temperature range of 10°C to 40°C. Poor starting may occur. • Watt Brighter: Poor starting may occur when used in lamp �xtures using electronic starting, brightness adjuster circuits, or electronic ballast. They can be used if energy-saving lamp types are indicated on the lamp �xture speci�cations plate. • If the lamp �ickers repeatedly or does not illuminate correctly, turn o� immediately and replace. Also check the starter. • Lamps are not suited to applications requiring frequent repeated �ickering, as they will reduce the service life.• Rapid-start (/A) type �uorescent lamps: Ground the lamp �xture (to the nearest conductor) when installing to avoid poor starting.• Avoid insecticide mists.• Germicidal lamps: The lamp �xture components should be designed for UV resistance. • Germicidal lamps: Do not use underwater, as this will lower the lamp temperature and reduce service life. Contact a maker specializing in �xtures.• Germicidal lamps: Keep the sterilizing lamp and re�ector plate clean to maintain sterilizing e�ects.• The areas around the electrodes may blacken when the lamp is �rst turned on. This should clear shortly and does not indicate a defect.• The lamp may �icker or take some time to reach full brightness after turning on if the ambient temperature is low. This does not indicate a defect.• Mercury may accumulate and reduce brightness at parts of the lamp in the direct path of a cool air�ow. This does not indicate a defect. • Use within ±10% of the voltage speci�ed for the �xture (ballast): if the voltage is too low, the lamp will not illuminate or its service life will be reduced; if the voltage is too high, service life will be reduced, and the ballast may overheat.• High frequency �uorescent lamp: T5 Circline “NEO-SLIM” FHC20/27/34 must be used with the dedicated �xtures. Use of other �xtures may result in failure to illuminate, abnormal electrical discharge, reduced service life, or �ickering.• Lamps contain metal granules to assist illumination; these will rattle when the lamp is shaken. This does not indicate a defect.

• When a lamp is in use, do not cover it with paper or cloth or place it near any potentially �ammable objects. Doing so may cause �re. • When installing, removing or cleaning a lamp, always remember to turn o� the power beforehand to eliminate the risk of electric shock.

• Use a lamp of the proper type and wattage, as speci�ed on the lamp and the receptacle. A lamp of the wrong type may overheat or fall out of the receptacle.• Be careful not to drop, bump, twist or otherwise damage lamps, especially when cleaning them. A broken lamp is dangerous.• A lamp that is lit or which has been recently turned o� will be very hot. Never touch it with your bare hand or skin or you may burn yourself. If you want to replace or clean a lamp, wait until it has cooled.• Don’t paint the lamps; they may overheat or break.• Don’t use a lamp in any potentially �ammable ambient-air conditions (e.g. air containing gasoline, �ammable spray, thinner, lacquer fumes, or �ne dust); a �re or explosion may occur. In such locations, use lighting equipment that has an anti-explosive structure.• Install lamps securely in receptacles. An insecurely installed lamp may fall out unexpectedly.• Don’t use a lamp in locations prone to vibration or shock; it may malfunction, wear out prematurely, or fall out. • Don’t use lamp with ordinary lighting equipment in ambient air made corrosive by the presence of any acid; electrical leakage may occur or the lamp may fall out. Use lighting equipment that has an anti-corrosive structure in such locations.• Don’t use a lamp with ordinary lighting equipment in air laden with powdery dust; the lamp may overheat or wear out prematurely, or a �re or explosion may occur, Use lighting equipment that has a sealed structure in such locations. If the dust is explosive or �ammable, use equipment with an anti-explosive structure as well.• When you discard a damaged lamp, be careful not to break it. Scattered pieces of glass in air can be a serious hazard. • Use a lamp at their speci�ed voltage. A higher voltage may reduce a lamp’s service life or cause it to overheat. Lower voltage (including those associated with a dimmer) will extend lamp life. During this additional period, however, the adhesive may break down, causing the lamp’s base to come o�. We thus recommend that you replace all lamps at the end of their rated life. • Don’t use a lamp speci�ed for indoor use in locations exposed to rain, water drops or high humidity; it may break. In such locations, use lighting equipment that has a waterproof structure. Alternatively, use a lamp speci�ed for outdoor use along with lighting equipment designed to protect the lamp’s base from water.• The bases of lamps for outdoor use do not have a waterproof structure. Accordingly, if a lamp will be exposed to water or rain, use it with lighting equipment that has a waterproof structure. Otherwise, the lamp may break or the insulation may fail. • Don’t place any object near a lamp or otherwise cover it. When lit, a lamp emits considerable heat as well as light. Nearby objects may become transformed or discoloured, or �re may result.• If the base of the lamp is �xed with adhesive, the lamp’s temperature cannot exceed 165°C.• If the base of the lamp is �xed mechanically (i.e., by punching or a similar process), the lamp’s temperature cannot exceed 230°C. Lamps of this latter type include 300W and 500W re�ector lamps for outdoor use, and all beam lamps.• Direction lamps: Directional lamps must be used in the speci�ed direction. There is a risk of reduced service life, �xture overheating, base detachment, or lamp breakage.• Mini krypton lamps: Keep out of reach of small children. There is a risk of choking if swallowed or injury if broken.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) LampsWARNING

CAUTION

• Lamps with a �xed direction of light must always be oriented in that direction. There is a risk of injury from �ying glass if the lamp breaks or shatters. • Never use lamps if they are cracked. Cracking poses a risk of injury to the skin and eyes from ultraviolet light; the lamp may also fall out of the socket. If cracking is noted, turn the lamp o� and replace it immediately. • Do not use the lamps for �shing; under such conditions, the lamps may break.• Always turn o� the lamps before inserting or removing, or when cleaning the �xtures. Otherwise, there is a risk of electric shock.• Fixtures with reinforced glass or mesh guards must be employed when using metal halide lamps.• Do not cover lamps with paper or cloth, or leave �ammable materials nearby. Doing so may result in �re or overheating of the �xtures. • Always use the correct lamp (speci�ed model and wattage) for the �xture and choke. Otherwise, there is the risk of overheating, leading to smoke, �re, or injury from damage to the lamp.

• Never touch the lamps while they are illuminated, or immediately after you have turned them o�, because they will be very hot. Doing so may result in burns. Allow the lamp to cool down before replacing or cleaning it, and wear protective items (e.g. safety glasses and gloves) when doing so. These small lamps use the same single base construction as standard incandescent lamps, yet provide the high lamp e�ciency* of �uorescent lamps, thus yielding energy costs about 1/4 to 1/5** those of incandescent lamps.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps

Compact �uorescent lamps combine a compactly folded glass tube with an integral starter circuit and use the same (E27) base as standard incandescent lamps. TOSHIBA NEOBALL incorporates the starter circuit inside the cover and contains amalgam inside the glass tube. This product is available in two types, with or without the globe resembling an incandescent lamp. The latter type is suitable for use with a �tting. The starter circuit uses an inverter for high e�ciency and light weight in a compact size.

Compact �uorescent lamps generate ultraviolet rays from mercury using a discharge the same way as �uorescent lamps, and these ultraviolet rays are converted into visible light by the phosphor.TOSHIBA NEOBALL controls the mercury vapor pressure using amalgam (mercury alloy) to ensure constant brightness with increased temperature due to the compact design.

The luminosity of �uorescent lamps is a�ected by the mercury vapor pressure inside the tube. This mercury vapor pressure varies according to ambient temperature, with maximum luminosity achieved at about 20 to 25°C. If the internal �xture temperature (lamp ambient temperature) rises while the lamp is illuminated, the mercury vapor pressure may exceed the optimum level, resulting in reduced luminosity.Particularly, in compact �uorescent lamps �tted with globes (EFA type), the glass tube is folded compactly and contained inside the globe, causing the temperature of the lamp itself to rise consider-ably.To minimize the reduction in luminosity caused by this temperature rise, and �uctuations in ambient temperature, amalgam technology is employed, to ensure consistent luminosity.

TOSHIBA NEOBALL and compact �uorescent lamps use mercury control technology to suit the lamp characteristics. Conventional products, designed for high- temperature use (e.g., EFA type), and conventional types at low temperatures, may take longer to reach full luminosity.

Secondary amalgam is provided near the electrodes to ensure constant brightness immediately when the lamp is turned on.

The electrodes heat up when the switch is turned on, causing mercury contained in the amalgam to be emitted. This functions to rapidly stabilize luminous �ux startup immediately after the lamp is turned on.

Color Temperature

Color Rendering Index (CRI) The Color Rendering Index (CRI) is an index that indicates how a light source can make what natural light would make appear normal.

Generally speaking, high CRI means that the light source show objects as they truly are.

Color teperature is measured in Kelvins. See the chapter of “Spectral Energy Distribution” on page 46 of this catalogue for more detailed information.

Lamp life is limited by the gradual consumption of the emitter on the �lament that occurs every time the �uorescent lamp is turned on and during operation, in addition to di�culties in radiating su�cient numbers of electrons. A �uorescent lamp that has come to the end of its life has emitter build-up on the tube walls close to the electrodes, and generating blacken-ing. Actually, in order to statistically process the deviation in lamp life, using the percentage of lamps that remain functional after a certain time has elapsed, known as the ”survival rate”, lamp life is calculated to be the average time when the survival rate falls to 50%.Actual lamp life span depends upon the characteristics of ballast and it may vary. Furthermore, under the conditions of actual use, where the lamp is being turned on and o� very frequently, or the voltage of the power supply is inappropriate, the life span can be shorter.

This life of a �uorescent lamp grows shorter the more frequently it is turned on and o�, because more emitter is consumed at the time the lamp is turned on then during operation. Turning it on once shortens the life span by about 30 to 90 minutes.The �lament coil of a �uorescent lamp was designed to exhibit ideal performance rated voltage. If the voltage of the power supply is too high, the lamp’s electrical current increases, the temperature of the �lament coil goes too high, and there is too much evaporation of the emitter. Conversely, if the voltage of the power supply is too low, starting up become unstable, with repeated blinking occurring. Also, if the temperature of a �lament coil is too low during operation, excessive vaporization of the emitter and shortening of the life span may be caused.

Fluorescent LampsThe Construction of Fluorescent lamps and The Principle at Work

Fluorescent lamps have �uorescent material applied to the inner surface of the tube’s glass wall. At both ends of the tube there are double coil or triple coil �laments made of tungsten attached to electrodes. An emitter is applied to the �lament.

In order to easily start emanation inside the tube, Argon gas (or mixed gas) under a pressure of 200 Pa to 400 Pa and a minute amount of mercury are enclosed in the tube. When it is ignited, (1)an electrical current �ows to the electrode (cathode), and when it preheats (2)heat electrons are abundantly emitted inside the tube. The heat electrons are drawn to the electrode (anode) on the opposite side, and electric discharge begins. The electrons that �ow as a result of the electric discharge (3) collide with mercury molecules inside the tube, (4) generating ultra-violet rays (253.7nm). These ultra-violet rays (5) excite the �uorescent material, and (6) radiate visible light. Depending on the �uorescent material used, white colored, noon-day colored, blue, green, and many other various colors of light are radiated.

Three Band Phosphor TypeFluorescent Lamps

The wave length that feels brightest to the human eye is in the neighbor-hood of 555nm (yellowish green). In other words, the more the light source includes light that is in the yellowish green neighborhood, the brighter it appears to be.

But, the natural light that people are accustomed to is made up of a variety of colored light, and the closer a light is to that spectrum distribution, the better its color performance is. In other words, in many cases, color performance and brightness con�ict with each other, and therefore we weren’t able to achieve these two attributes at the same time. However, by e�ectively radiating the colors of light that feel good to people’s eyes: blue, green, and red, we were able to create a lamp that has color performance along with brightness. It’s called “The Three- Band Phospher- Type Fluores-cent Lamp.”

Higher ambient temperatures increase the lamp current, which causes the �lament to overheat with increased emitter evaporation. Conversely, if ambient temperature is too low, it will cause the lamp fails to start reliably or will increase emitter scatter due to the reduced lamp current and lower �lament temperature. The Figure on right hand side shows how lamp life shortened in both circumstances.Using �uorescent lamps in exposed �xtures will shorten lamp life, as will low ambient temperature, when the lamp tubes are cooled by direct drafts of air from air-conditioning outlets. Covers should be used on �xtures in locations subject to cool drafts of air or low ambient temperature.

Ambient Temperature Characteristics of Fluorescent Lamps (1) Light Output Characteristics

Standard �uorescent lamps are designed to give maximum brightness at an ambient temperature in the range of 20°C to 25?.An ambient temperature below this range will cause the mercury vapor pressure inside the lamp tube to decrease, thus reducing ultraviolet intensity and lamp brightness. Conversely, an ambient temperature above this range will increase the mercury vapor pressure and the ratio of ultraviolet rays reabsorbed by the mercury atoms, thus reducing lamp brightness. Consequently, the light output drops when the ambient temperature is too high or too low (as shown in the Figure).The tables on total luminous �ux and electrical characteristics in this catalog are for illumination using JIS or other speci�ed lighting equipment at 25?, unless it is indicated.Note: “JIS or other speci�ed”: includes JIS, JEL, or Toshiba standards.“Lighting equipment”: Commercial power supply, high-frequency (45 kHz) or equivalent.

The starting voltage required to turn on �uorescent lamps varies, since the mercury vapor pressure and inert gas pressure ratio inside the tube vary depending on the ambient temperature. Starting characteristics are particularly poor at reduced mercury vapor pressure due to low ambient temperature.Fluorescent lamps should be used at ambient temperatures in the range from 5°C to 40°C. The FL40 T8 and FLR110H/A/100 should be used in the range from 10°C to 40°C.

(2) Starting Characteristics

Fluorescent lamps are designed to give maximum brightness at an ambient temperature in the range from 20°C to 25°C. At cold tempera-ture such as on cold winter mornings, lamps may appear dim, �icker, or blacken at the ends of the tube due to mercury deposits when turned on. Normal operation should be restored as heating causes the room temperature to rise.

Fluorescent Lamps■ Variations in Fluorescent Lamp Blackening

(1) Anode Spots

The relatively well-de�ned blackening that occurs near the electrodes is known as “anode spots”. This is caused by the scattering and adhering of emitter material (coated on the lamp electrodes) to the lamp tube’s inner walls near the electrodes over time. This form of blackening occurs over extended periods of use. Anode spots that occur relatively early on may be caused by one of the factors below. Ensure that the lamp is used correctly.

1. The lamp is frequently turned on and o�.2. The power supply voltage is too high or too low.3. The incorrect ballast is used (e.g. using starter-type lamp with Rapid Start �xture).4. Poor contact is caused by the lamp being improperly �tted in a rapid start �xture.

(2) End bandsBlackening in the form of blackish-brown bands several centimeters from the ends of the lamp and spreading towards the middle of the tube is called “end bands.” This occurs over extended periods of use and is caused by the combination of mercury with microscopic amount of gas generated by emitter vaporization when the lamp is illuminated. End bands have minimal e�ect on lamp life and brightness.

(3) EC Blackening and YellowingEC blackening is seen in Rapid Start �uorescent lamps with an electrochromic (EC) �lm applied inside, since it is caused by discoloration of the phosphor by minute discharges between the electrochromic �lm on the inner surface and mercury atoms. Yellowing is caused by a reaction between the electrochromic �lm on the inner surface and the phosphor.

These phenomena are more likely to occur in situations where the lamp is directly in the draft from air-conditioning equipment, thus cooling the tube wall and making mercury more likely to adhere. Such phenomena can be reduced by improving the operating conditions.

These phenomena are less likely to occur when using an electronic ballast (inverter).

Darkening may occur due to mercury deposits inside the �uorescent lamp tubes, but unlike the blackening phenomena described earlier, this does not a�ect lamp life or performance.

(1) Deposits Around ElectrodesThis phenomenon is seen immediately after turning a lamp on after a long period of nonuse, and caused (when the lamp is turned on) by the instantaneous vaporization and cohering of mercury deposited on the electrodes (�laments and lead wires) during transport or storage. As the lamp warms up a short while after being turned on, the mercury vaporized and the darkening disappears. Lamp performance is not a�ected.

(2) Deposits in Center of LampThis phenomenon occurs when part of the lamp is cooler than the rest, such as the center underside of the lamp, parts exposed to a draft, or parts near light-�tting louvers. This occurs due to the tendency of mercury to deposit in the coolest parts of the lamp, but does not a�ect lamp performance.

■ The characteristics of �uctuations in the voltage of the power supply and its e�ects on the life span of a lamp

Since lamps are designed according to the voltage indicated on the mark, their characteristics change remarkably through �uctua-tions in the voltage of their power supply. When you use them with voltage that is higher than normal, their life span shrinks. On the other hand, with low voltage, the lamp has a longer life span, but its brightness drops and it is uneconomical. This relationship between voltage and life span is shown in the graph.

Glow starter are used in starter-type �uorescent lamps, and divided into E and P types depending on the base (1) con�guration. The basic construction is the same for both and consists of a �xed electrode (3) and bimetallic electrode (4) inside a central glass tube (2). This construction is protected and insulated by a resin cap.

When the switch is turned on and voltage applied, a glow discharge occurs between the �xed electrode and bimetallic electrode. The heat from this glow discharge causes the bimetallic electrode to bend until it makes contact with the �xed electrode, at which point a current �ows.

The �uorescent lamp �laments are preheated while the two electrodes are in contact, but the starter electrodes cool down due to the decreased heat, causing the bimetallic electrode to return to its original position, thus breaking contact.

At this point, a high voltage (known as an induction kick voltage) is generated by the ballasts to start (illuminate) the lamp. The P type includes an anti-noise capacitor (6) to reduce radio reception interference when turning on or using the lamp. This also assists starter operation.

Note: When the service life of the Glow starter expires, the lamp takes longer to turn on and �ickers repeatedly. The lamp life will also be reduced. Therefore, the Glow starter should be replaced when replacing the lamp. Failure to remove a life-expired lamp will cause the Glow starter to operate erratically, thus damag-ing the Glow starter and overhearing the ballast. Life-expired lamps should be promptly replaced.

■ Operation of TOSHIBA Mercury Lamps

The mercury lamp is basically an arc tube using a ballast to control the lamp current. A choke coil is used as a simple ballast. A combination of choke coil and boost transformer must be used when the line voltage is lower than the starting voltage of the lamp. A simple starting circuit is shown, at right. The mercury vapor pressure is low when the lamp is �rst switched on so the lamp voltage is also low. This voltage increases and the current decreases as the mercury evaporates. Thus, the luminosity increases gradually and the lamp operation stabilities when the mercury is completely evaporated. The mercury lamp cannot be restarted immediately after being turned o�. This is because of the high mercury vapor pressure so a higher voltage is required to restart. As the mercury vapor pressure fall in several minutes, the lamp can be turned on. Line voltage must be kept within ±6% of the rated value although the e�ect varies with the type of ballast circuitry.

The basic principle is that when the electrons (2)discharged from the electrode ?, are pulled towards the opposite electrode, they collide with mercury atoms, (3) and those mercury atoms release light, (4)the same as a �uorescent lamp. However, because the temperature and density of the merury atoms become much higher when the lamp is lit, compared with the �uorescent light, the radiated spectrum covers various wavelengths. In other words, in the low voltage electrical discharges of �uorescent lamps, the radiated wavelength concentrates around 253.7nm ultra-violet rays. The wavelength becomes longer along with a rise in temperature and density of the mercury, and it radiates light visible to the human eye. In this way, with HID lamps that require heating inside the radiating tube, it normally takes several minutes to reach heated conditions after �ipping the switch on. Even immediately after turning o� the lights, the radiating tube returns to its original temperature, and will not light up again until the starting of electrical discharge.

The internal construction varies in accordance with whether the line voltage is 100 – 110V or 200 – 220V.

100 - 110V Line VoltageThe low line voltage allows a starting method similar to that used in �uorescent lamps. The discharge is made easy by heating the �lament for short time through the action of the bi-metal switch. The rated luminosity is obtained immediately after starting although the color may vary. Operation:In Neo Color (150 to 400 W) �lling mixture of neon-argon gas is sealed and starting aids are wound outside of the arc tube, so that the lamp does not require high voltag pulses and can be started with a source voltage of 200 V or less without failure.

(1) GetterThe lamp provides a high-performance getter that keeps a high vacuum inside the external bulb up to the end of its life.

(2) Starting UnitThe starting unit consists of bimetal and �lament, and generates a pulse voltage required for starting; it can be lit with general mercury lamp ballasts.

(3) Starting aidsMolybdenum wire is attached along the arc tube to ensure the starting of lamp. During lighting, the metal separates itself from the arc tube because it is bimetal.

(4) Arc tubeSodium, mercury and xenon are sealed in the arc tube. The alumina ceramics tube has diameter larger than the conventional one to increase the sealing pressure of xenon,so that the decrease in e�ciency due to the increase in vapor pressure of sodium can be minimized. Features:NH - D•L TYPE is most e�cient in the general light sources for illumination, and can be lit with general mercury lamp ballasts, therefore it is spreading rapidly as a preference light source of electricity conservation. But the general high pressure sodium lamp is not suitable for places where emphasize color appearance (color rendering). Operation:The lamp provides a starting unit that consists of starting bimetal and �lament. When the power is turned ON, the �lament of thestarting unit is heated, and in consequence the bimetal opens and generates energized about 3000V at both ends of the choke coil of theballast. The energized voltage in the form of pulses is superimposed on the source voltage, so that the arc tube starts discharging. After that, discharging is maintained by source voltage resulting in stable lighting of the lamp.During lighting, the starting bimetal of the starting unit is kept open.

An object (black body) gives o� light as it is heated, the color of the light gradually changes from red to yellow to white to light blue.
