-- (1906 – 1920) Thunberg tried to understand cellular respiration by testing how organic substances

were oxidized animals tissue. (eHow. 2009)

- (1920) F. Batelli and L.S. Stern were interested in oxidative cell

metabolism. They used enzymatic studies on catalase and fumarase.

(eHow. 2009)

- Previous scientists Carl Cori and Gerry Cori investigated the conversion of nutrients into energy through anaerobic respiration.

-The understanding of glycolysis was important due to the production of two pyruvate molecules that provided energy through ATP for further stages in cellular respiration.

- Enzyme activity was used as a basic knowledge for their experiments It was understood that muscular activity requires ATP as energy.

- F. Batelli and L.S. Based their studies off of Thunberg’s knowledge.

(Nelson, David L., & Cox, Michael M. 2005)

-Thunberg performed the first investigation by examining the oxidization of organic substances in isolated animal issues. He tested over 60 organic substances, mostly in muscle tissue.

-He found that the combustion of nutrients is the repeated process of hydrogen ions separating with the help of enzymes.

- F. Batelli and L.S. Stern used beef liver as their experimental investigation. They found that the enzyme Fumarase was essential for oxidation and reduction.

- Studied and researched Catalase and Fumarase. (Akart, Konrad. 1996)

- Thunberg characterized photosynthesis as an oxidation –reduction reaction in which CO2 is reduced and water is oxidized.

- F. Batelli and L.S. Stern concluded that minced animal tissues contained substances

that transferred hydrogen atoms from specific intracellular

organic acids.

(eHow. 2009)

- He also discovered oxidative degradation of foodstuff of

animals.

- They were able to understand how the products of glycolysis

were continued on to then become reactants of the Krebs

Cycle.
