XLPE Screenings and Insulation by Extrusion
Conductors made through stranding process aresubjected to this operation to form cores. Theprocess requires three extrusion operations, whichare done simultaneously using three extruders buta common head.
The core consists of three concentric layers o fextruded material. The first is a layer of black semi
conducting compound formed over the strandedcompacted conductor using the first extruder. Juston top of this a layer of white insulation compoundis extruded to form the second layer and finallythrough another extruder a layer o f black semiconducting compound is extruded over insulationlayer. The semi conducting layer formed overconductor is called conductor screen and the oneover insulation is called insulation screen. The threelayers i.e .conductor screen, insulation andinsulation screen are formed through a commonhead known as triple head.

Tips:
9.Follow ing care should be taken wh ilelaying the Cable Across Roads, Railway
Tracks or Water Pipe Lines :
Steel, Castlron, Plastics, Cement or earthenwareducts or cable ducting blocks should be usedwhere cables cross roads and railways tracks.
Spare ducts for future extension should beprovided & sealed at both ends.
Ensure smooth entry of cable without undue
bending.
The duct/pipe joints should be covered by collarsto prevent settlement in between pipes.
The diameter of the cable conduit or pipe or ductshould be atleast 1.5 times the outer diameterof cable. The pipe/duct should be mechanicallystrong enough to withstand forces due to heavytraffic when laid across road/railway tracks.
The cable entry and exit should be through bellmouth or padding.
The bending radii of steel or plastic ducts shouldnot be less than 1.5 m.
Single core cables should not be laid individually
in ducts, butall3 cables of the same systemshould be laid in one duct.

Tips:6.Type of Tests conducted on Finished
Cables
Routine TestsRoutine tests are tests conducted on each andevery finished length o f a cable. Routine testsmean tests conducted on a cable to assess itssuitability during routine service condition.
Type TestsType tests consist of a number of testsconducted on a piece of cable (not on the entiredrum length) cut from a finished cable drumlength. The purpose of these tests is to confirmthe suitability of a cable against the type, whichhas been constructed for a particular application. The sample taken for type tests represents theentire lot of cable manufactured of a particulartype.
Acceptance TestsAcceptance tests also consist of a number oftests conducted on few pieces of cables drawnfrom a manufactured lot. These tests areconducted during client's witness of testprogramme on a manufactured lot in order todecide about the lotto be shipped for usage ornot.
Special Tests
Special tests are those tests which do not getcovered under routine o r type o r acceptancetests. Generally special tests are conducted toassess a particular property or a set ofproperties, which have been built in the cable toexhibit desired requirement during its operation.

Tips:5.Key Manufacturing P rocess in HT Cable
Manufacturing.
Wet (Steam/ Hot Water) Cure Process
The chemistry of cross linking leads toC-Si-O-Si-C linkage.
The cores are cooled in water, post extrusion.
The cross linking takes place in a wetenvironment.
Curing is done by batch process.
Because of batch process, there is a limitation todrum length of cable.
The plant and machinery are not very expensive.
Losses are less in case of equipment/process malfunctioning.
This does not require very large factory space.
The process requires an associated curingarrangement in the form of steam y chamber orwater tank etc.
Curing is restricted to insulation only, semiconducting layers are of y thermoplasticcompound based.
Because of batch curing, extremely difficult tocrossing cores.beyond 33 kV. Chances ofnon-uniform cross linking cannot be ruled out.
Maintenance expenses are comparatively lower.
