Between Us July/August 2016
Vol. 64
Issue 7
President’s Message 2016
Now that May gray and June gloom have come and gone, July is usually the month to start one's
vacation. The Auxiliary Board gets to have a little break by not having a Board meeting in
July. So, we get to enjoy time with our families and our friends when we just don't have enough
time to do so.
However, we must always remember that we still have activities, special events and fundraisers to
attend. Some of us will be attending the Hollywood Bowl Night with legendary Diana Ross on
Saturday, July 16. On Wednesday, July 13, we have our Auxiliary fundraising event at Award
Winning Gaetano's Restaurant, serving lunch and dinner from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Lastly,
Thursday, August 4, you can catch a bus from the TMMC employee parking lot at 9:30 AM and
be taken to the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center for the day.
Stuart Wilson, our Special Events Chairperson has planned these events to be reasonable and varied so everyone can
enjoy them throughout the year.
Remember, set time aside for family and friends, enjoy a concert, enjoy the museum and have an enjoyable lunch and
dinner supporting the Auxiliary and enjoy Summer 2016.
Thank you and have fun. I know I will!

From the Director’s Desk Mary Matson
In June I attended the annual Torrance Memorial employee service awards luncheon. This year almost 500 employees received awards ranging from five to 45 years of service. I attended for two reasons. First, I attended as a director of two employees receiving awards. Debbie Hight received her five year award and Marcela Agudelo received a 20-year service award. Congratulations, Debbie and Marcela!
I also attended as an employee receiving her 10-year service award. Joining in these festivities helped reinforce for me the importance of marking service milestones and celebrating together in events such as our volunteer recognition brunch each April. In fact, I delayed my trip to San Luis Obispo for our daughter’s graduation weekend by half a day in order to receive my 10-year pin in person!
So August 14th marks my 10-year anniversary as director of the Volunteer Services department at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. In some ways it seems like just yesterday that I started. Yet when I look back I see so much that we have experienced together and accomplished as a team for our organization. Coming to Torrance Memorial, which represented a shift from a corporate environment to health care, has proved to be a great move for me both personally and professionally. I thank you all so much for your ongoing support and I look forward to many more years together.

Donna Cohen
Started: 1995
Board Position: President-Elect
Volunteer Position: NICU
Donna’s volunteer career began, in 1995, as a Luminaries volunteer, along with her
two children. Donna's children continued volunteering for four years. Donna has been
an active volunteer ever since, logging over 20 years of service. Developing the baby
Cuddler volunteer program is one of the things Donna is most proud of. As she puts
it: "Cuddling the ... sick babies give[s] us more than we get! It is a very heartwarming
job. We get to see miracles happen as the babies get stronger and healthier." As the Cuddler volunteer
founder and chairperson, Donna helped develop and grow the program into one of the most popular volunteer
departments at TMMC. The baby Cuddler program is a unique service not offered by many hospitals. Cuddler
volunteers working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (“NICU”) "provide affection and simulation to infants
whose parents are unable to be at the hospital with them." (Orientation Packet for New NICU Cuddlers) The
responsibilities of a Cuddler volunteer include, "holdling, rocking and cuddling the stable premature and
newborn infants in the NICU under the guidance of the bedside nurse.” Not surprising, implementing
the Cuddler program was first met by challenges. Donna Cohen and other Cuddlers’ tenacity and
determination were instrumental in assuring the success of developing TMMC's NICU Cuddler program, along
with the support and guidance from a new nursing director who had prior experience with volunteer cuddlers at
a previous healthcare facility. Utilizing her patience and commitment Donna proved the value that the
Cuddler volunteers provide the babies, but more importantly demonstrated the value that the program provides
to the NICU staff. Over time, the NICU medical staff learned to appreciate all the help that the Baby Cuddler
volunteers provide. As the founding chair of the Cuddler Volunteer program, Donna provides orientation to all
new prospective Cuddler Volunteers. Over the many years, Cuddler shifts typically remain successfully filled
throughout the week -- three-hour shifts seven days a week over a fourteen-hour period each day. Donna's devotion to TMMC does not end with the Cuddler Volunteer program. She currently sits on the
Auxiliary Board as the President-Elect. And one of Donna's most memorable moments as a volunteer occurred
during the time she was taking baby pictures as part of the volunteer Baby Photo service area. An excited
father ran after Donna and another photographer and asked them to take a picture of his baby, while his wife
was still sleeping. A few months later, the same father asked for a baby photograph and was just as exuberant,
but this time it was for a picture of his nephew. Before committing her life to helping others, Donna was employed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as a
manager/trainer and Volunteer Coordinator for the Community Helpline. Donna was also a Foundation
Director at the Southern California Regional Occupational Center (“SCROC”) in Torrance, California.
As a fourteen-year breast cancer survivor, Donna eventually became a certified Mastectomy Fitter, helping and
supporting women with breast cancer. Along with working part-time, volunteering and raising her family,
Donna spent many years commuting to San Diego to care for her aging parents. During her down time, Donna
loves keeping busy with her craft projects as well as reading and spending time with her greatest treasures, her
family and dear friends. She is a very passionate L.A. Dodger fan and has a picture of herself with Sandy
Koufax. Donna admits becoming an avid fan, in 1969, of Days of Our Lives, while she recovered from illness. Donna, thanks for developing and continuing the Cuddler Volunteer program at TMMC as well as all of your
dedication and time you give to the community. You are truly a special angel.

Getting to Know You, Getting to Know All About You Student Volunteer Profile
By Tracy Isenberg, Auxiliary Public Relations Chairperson
Vanessa De la Torre
Started: 2010
Student: Mount St. Mary’s University
Volunteer Position: Med Surg 5 East and 7 East
Vanessa De la Torre caught the bug to volunteer after watching volunteers walking around
in their blue jackets when she would visit her mother who is a Torrance Memorial Medical
Center (“TMMC”) employee.
As a tenth grader, Vanessa thought volunteering would enable her to be able to give back to her community and
help others, Vanessa also wanted to investigate a possible medical career and receive first-hand experience on
what it would be like to work in a hospital setting.
So, Vanessa began volunteering in Escort Services and eventually transitioned onto the Registration Desk.
As college course work commitments vied for Vanessa’s attention, she took a break, but reapplied last year and
became a TMMC college student-volunteer.
After spending a short stint in Escort Services, again, Vanessa moved to a short-term assignment assisting in the
Pre-Op/PACU and surgery waiting room, which provided her most notable moment as a volunteer. One day,
during her volunteer shift, an astute six-year old girl in the waiting room asked Vanessa about herself and her
responsibilities as a volunteer. In response, Vanessa explained that she volunteers as a way to give back to her
community and to hopefully make another person’s day a little better. Before the little girl left, she let Vanessa
know that Vanessa did a good job; had made her day a better one; and hoped to be a volunteer. For most of this
year Vanessa has been an integral member of the volunteer team on Med Surg 5 East and 7 East on Mondays.
Vanessa’s duties include supporting the medical staff; maintaining patient and waiting rooms; helping patients
and their family members with special needs; and chatting with patients.
Vanessa graduated in May from Mount St. Mary’s University with a degree in Sociology with an emphasis in
Medical Sociology. Vanessa will be continuing her studies, this fall, at USC’s Graduate School of Social Work,
aspiring to become a licensed medical social worker.
After reflecting on her past course work, Sociology 189 – Gerontology turns out to be Vanessa’s favorite. The
class probed the issue of ageism, analyzed the societal biases of the elderly and studied the aging process from
both an individual prospective as well as from a social economic level. Vanessa was intrigued on how various
cultures respond to handling the aging process. Throughout the class, Vanessa was presented with avenues in
which to become a proponent for seniors by bringing more sensitivity and awareness about aging to the public.
For the last six years, Vanessa has been dancing Ballet Folklorico de Mexico as a means of releasing the stress
from studying. Ballet Folklorico de Mexico consists of ballet works and musical pieces reflective of various
regions and folk music genres of Mexico.
In addition to cultural dance, Vanessa is a huge Disney fan. So huge that she holds an annual pass and enjoys
spending time at the happiest place on earth. Like many of us Angelinos, Vanessa prides herself as a Lakers and
Dodgers fan.
Vanessa plans to continue her education this fall at USC in pursuit of becoming a medical social worker.

June Auxiliary General Meeting, Buffet Luncheon and Painting Party by Tracy Isenberg, Public Relations Chairperson
The Auxiliary held its general meeting and summer buffet luncheon during a beautiful, sunny afternoon on
Wednesday, June 15th at the Health Conference Center. The delicious buffet lunch began with a vegetarian three-bean chili with shredded cheese and diced onions
as accompaniments, as well as a crudité and cheese platter. There were three tasty salads, baby kale with
almond, figs and Gorgonzola; farro and cauliflower; and black-eyed peas and kale. The sandwiches included
a five-spiced chicken Bahn Mi, Portobello and onion marmalade and turkey and avocado club. For dessert,
we had a beautiful and healthy fresh fruit platter and freshly baked assorted cookies. After lunch, about eleven Auxiliary members and friends participated in a painting class lead by Rosemary
Brandes of Destination Art. The participants showed off their unique artistic talents and created colorful
works of art.
