A FAMOUS OPERA SINGER: LINET SAULA FAMOUS OPERA SINGER: LINET SAUL

How and when did you decide to be an opera singer?

I decided to be an opera singer after I finished high school. At the

beginning I could not decide between becoming an English teacher

or an opera singer. So I studied both in the same year and at the end

of that year, I knew I wanted to be an opera singer.

Who effected you to be an opera singer?

I have amateur musicians in my family that effected me. But my

boyfriend at that time, who is my husband now had the biggest ef-

fect on me to take this decision.

As a child what were your musical activities?

I started singing in children's choir since I was 7 years old, and also

I was always singing in the school orchestra.

What kind of education did you take to become an opera sin-

ger?

To become an opera singer, you should study voice in the conserva-

tory for 5 years. You have to take these classes: Voice, harmony,

sight reading, music history, opera history, dance, stage, acting, ma-

ke-up, piano, languages (Italian, French, German), diction and cho-

rus.

In these years you sing some

concert and you get used to the

stage.

Do you think an opera singer

should speak foreign langua-

ges?

An opera singer must certainly

know as many languages as

she can. Because, operas are

usually in Italian, German,

French or Spanish. There are

operas in Russian too. So if

you know these languages and

you understand what you are

singing about, it helps you on

you acting, and also this way

you can express yourself bet-

ter.

3

What are the important things that an opera singer sho-

uld pay attention?

An opera singer must take very good care of herself, like a

sportsman. She must eat healthy food, and she must do

sports. Smoking or too much alcohol is forbidden. She must

not drink very cold or very hot beverages. She should not eat

dinner very late and go to sleep immediately which is not

good for the stomach and not good for the vocal chords. She

must discipline herself to live a healthy life.

Can you describe your feelings when you are at stage?

Being on stage is a wonderful feeling. Especially when you

can express yourself as you want to and you get a lot of

applause at the end of your performance, there is not a better

or more satisfying feeling in the world.

Do you recommend young people to become opera sin-

gers?

I certainly recommend "opera singing" career to everybody.

For me music is the highest art of all the arts.

Who is Linet Saul?

Born in 1970, Linet Saul has

graduated from Hartt School of

Music in Hartford, USA in the

year 1995. She later continued

her studies with the Italian Bari-

tone, Licinio Montefusco.

After becoming a finalist in the

Leyla Gencer singing competi-

tion in Istanbul, she started her

career with the role of Adina in

Elisir d'Amore of Donizetti in

Istanbul in 1995.

Linet Saul has been performing

in the Izmir State Opera since

1998 and some of her roles

are: Don Giovanni (Zerlina),

Faust (Siebel), Fidelio

(Marzelline), Elisir d'Amore

(Adina), Racconti di Hoff-

mann'ýn (Giulietta), Barber of

Seville (Rosina), Il Turco in Ita-

lia (Fiorilla), La Bohème

(Musetta), Marriage of Figaro

(Susanna), Idomeneo

(Idamante), Carmen (Frasquita).

The artist also gave sevaral con-

certs in Italy, Turkey and other

countries. Among these are

Boccherini's Stabat Mater with

the Italian Baroque orchestra 'I

Suonatori della Gioiosa Marca',

C.P.E. Bach's Magnificat at the

International Music Festival of

Pordenone, a concert with Bo-

naldo Giaotti in Istanbul, Con-

cert and radio recording at Tau-

romenium Auditrium of Preto-

ria, South Africa, and a recital in

Montevideo, Uruguay.

Bought some butter.

“But” she said,

“the butter’s bitter.

If I put it

in my batter,

it will make

my batter bitter.

But a bit

of better butter

that would make

my batter better”.

So she bought

a bit of butter,

better than

her bitter butter.

And she put it

in her batter,

and the batter,

was not bitter.

Amazing 3Amazing 3--Ring Light ShowRing Light Show When blue, red and green are mixed together, they make black. When blue, red and gren light

are mixed together… a surprising thing happens! Can you guess what? You will need:

3 flashlights

Same kind sheets

Of cellophane paper

or transparent plastic

wrap – 1 blue, 1 red

and 1 green

3 rubber bands

White wall

Small table or bench

1 or 2 helpers

What to do:

Using the rubber bands, fasten a different-colored sheet over the head of each flashlight.

Now, place the three flashlights on a table or bench, or get one or two helpers or friends to

help you, and aim the flash-lights at the wall. The two outside flashlights should be turned

slightly toward the middle one, which should be aimed straight ahead.

Then, turn on all three flash-lights, moving the two outer ones so that the three circles of

light on the wall overlap.

What Happens:

A rounded triangle of white light appears in the middle of the three overlapped colored circles.

Why:

Light has within it all colors, which is why it sometimes makes something called a continuous

spectrum, in other words, a rainbow. By passing the white light through the red sheet, only red

light comes out. The same thing happens with the other color sheets, so you get the three pri-

mary colors: red, green and blue. When all the colors come together again, in the middle of the

lights, the mixture of all the three colors forms a rounded white triangle.
