TOPIC: MeasurementAim: How do we measure volume?
Do Now: How many :- mm are found in 1cm?- cm are found in 1m?- mm are found in 1 m?- m are found in 1km?
HW: Activity: Lab Safety due Wednesday
Students wanted to investigate the effect of alcohol on seed growth. They suspected that seeds would not grow very well in water to which alcohol had been added. They set up 2 identical containers filled with soil with 30 mustard seeds planted in each. Both containers were placed near a window. Every other day, 20 mL of water was added to Container A. A mixture of 10 mL of alcohol and 10 mL of water was added to Container B. The students observed the containers each day to note how many seeds had germinated.

• The amount of space an object takes up
• UNITS = –Liquid: mL or L–Solid: cm3
• 1 mL = 1 cm3
Volume
1. Volume of a Solid:
V = L x W x H
How is volume measured?
•Ex: L =2 cm, W=1 cm, H=1 cm
V =2cm x 1cm x 1cm
V = 2 cm3
•Example: V = ?
•V = L x W x H2cm x 3cm x 5cm
V = 30 cm3
2. Volume of a liquid: graduated cylinder (mL)
•Measure at the MENISCUS
V =73 mL
V = 18 mL
5.5 mL 93 mL26 mL
23.5 mL
V1 = 200 mL V2 = 260 mL
260mL – 200mL= 60mL
3.Volume of irregular solid:•Displacement•V with object - V w/o object
Let’s summarize…
1. Identify the instrument used to measure volume of a liquid.
2. Identify the instrument used to measure volume a regular solid.
3. What are the units used when measuring the volume of a liquid? Of a solid?
4. Explain how the volume of a certain amount of liquid is measured.
5. Explain how the volume of a regular solid is determined.
6. Explain how displacement is used to measure the volume of an irregular solid.
V1 = 7 mL
V2= 9 mL
V = 9 – 7= 2
V = 2 mL
