Her remit was to try to find answers to the list of questions below by asking town councillors, health workers and so on. She was also asked to interview a range of people who work with Europeans, such as waitresses and policemen, and to find out about their experiences of and relationships with foreigners, and their thoughts on integration. Some interviews were in-depth, others were necessarily more brief. Some have been recorded and transcribed, while others took the form of observation notes as no permission to archive was sought. Dataset title: British Migrants in Spain: the extent and nature of social integration Karen O’Reilly, University of Aberdeen Tel: 01224 272766 Email: [email protected] British and north-European Migration to Spain Introduction to the Study and Consent Form

Dear Sir or Madam: There have now been a number of different studies conducted of Europeans living in Spain. For example Karen O'Reilly (University of Aberdeen) has studied the British community on the Costa del Sol, Vicente Rodriguez Rodriguez and colleagues (CSIC, Madrid) have studied retired Europeans in Andalucia, and Russell King and colleagues (University of Sussex) have researched north European retirement migrants in various European countries. However, the focus has tended to be on retired migrants only, and on reasons for migration. Karen O'Reilly (with the support of the University of Aberdeen and the Economic and Social Research Council of Great Britain) is now conducting a new piece of research which focuses much more on issues of integration. What we would like to know more about is how migrants experience living in Spain in terms of a sense of belonging. How much do migrants feel part of things in Spain and to what extent do they feel excluded from activities, services, friendships, politics, or social life in general? Your relationships and activities with people of your own country as well as with people of other countries is of relevance here. There is a questionnaire designed to answer some of these questions. We would also like to interview a number of people in more depth. The study is completely confidential. The results obtained will be of an anonymous nature, and will not be associated to your name or to personal details unless you specify otherwise. The objectives of this study are purely scientific, as is guaranteed both by the nature of our profession and the organisation financing the research. Nevertheless, if you are asked a question you do not wish to answer, please be assured you are under no pressure to respond. Your participation in this study is invaluable to us and we thank you in anticipation. If you would like to receive a report of the study's findings at the end of the project please indicate this to your interviewer. Karen O’Reilly, University of Aberdeen. Tel: 01224 272766. For some of them a list of questions was put on the board to guide them. Note: Names have not been changed, so please respect privacy when quoting.
