interventions on HBs in their surroundings. Values and

aesthetics of materials. Challenges of replacing original

Legibility and invasiveness of conservation work towards

the surroundings. (CDE, MJU, MMK, PTI)

Use of appropriate conservation materials that match

well aesthetically and technologically with preserved

parts of HBs and its surroundings and that ensure

adequate reversibility of the intervention performed.

Dear All,

as you proposed to participate in topic 3.A2, we ask you to

send us two or three photos of integration of damaged

parts of HBs in your country. It can be a good work

integrating with the building and the environment or a bad

one damaging structure, aesthetics. You should write also a

comment with a few entries, if you have all the data:

Country, location, HB typology, chronology, which part

is the photo referred to, restoration type and

chronology, good/bad integration with the building,

good/bad integration with the environment, why in your

opinion.

Comment: a bold approach, contemporary materials

(glass, metal) in contrast with the old limestone ruins

definitely make the building much more attractive, the

architectural realization could be more refined though.

Location: Estonia, Narva town

HB type: church

Built: 1881-1884

Restoration: 2004-2008

Restored part: tower

Comment: Rebuilding the tower was

essential for restoring the integrity of the

church and restoring its position as a

landmark. Restored tower is built of

reinforced concrete and cladded with

limestone plates in order to make it look

outside as it was originally. Concrete is

left exposed in the interior though.

Restored part: roof and arcade

Comment: This could be an example

of spatial reconstruction – the

integrity of the building is restored but

in the closer look the new parts are

clearly distinguishable. The arcade is

made of exposed concrete which

grey color harmonizes well with the

old limestone wall it is connected to.

- Protecting and consolidating the structure in such a way as to prevent further collapse

- facilitating communication/understanding for the general public
