Topaze Guided Session #3
A01 • Introduction
This guided session uses the file TopGS03.dp2 installed during the set up of Topaze stand
alone or Ecrin Workstation. It is assumed that you have studied the Topaze guided sessions #1
and #2 in which you learn the basic Topaze options and methodologies.
This session illustrates the multi-well capabilities of Topaze. A simple DMP2 file (Dwights Detail
Production Export Format) containing productions from different wells will be loaded and
analyzed, and a field profile will be built. Only simplistic models will be used in the process, as
the objective here is not to demonstrate the modeling capabilities of Topaze.
B01 • Loading Data
Click on New Document and set the document structure to multi-well, as shown below:
Fig. B01.1 • Multi-well new document
Click on Next to confirm the document creation. Unlike in the single-well case, you are not
required to define test nor well parameters since this multi-well document does not contain
any starting analysis, and is initialized without any well.

After document creation the Multiwell tab is now active, and the control panel is positioned to
the Multiwell page:
Fig. B01.2 • Multiwell tab
Click on Load ( ) in the Multiwell page. In the following dialog make sure that the type of
data source is set to be a DMP2 file and select ( option) the file „TopGS03.dp2‟. Click on
Next to access the DMP2 file load dialog:

This dialog displays an information summary of the data contained in the DMP2 file: number of
wells, well names and coordinates, number of rate and pressure data associated to each well.
Click on Import to complete the load - the 10 wells contained in the data file are now visible:
Fig. B01.4 • Multiwell tab after the load of the DMP2 file
Move to the 2DMap tab in order to check that all wells have been loaded and that their relative
positions have been set (the field contour has been reset to include all wells):

If you visit the Test information dialog ( ) you will also check that the document reference
date and time have been reset:
The Multiwell tab displays a browser listing all wells as well as the pressure / rate data
contained in each well. If you select a given node you can view the associated content in a plot
or in tabular format by clicking on the corresponding option in the toolbar of the right-hand
side pane.
For instance, click on the well
„SOUTH-P “F9‟ in the left-hand side
browser:
Click on the „View plot‟ option ( )
to view all data contained in that
well:
Click now on the „View table‟ option
( ) to edit all data in a tabular
format:
Individual pressure gauges and productions may be edited in the Edit Pressures and Edit
Production tabs – just like in single well documents.

B02 • Analysis of Well SOUTH-P”F9
The document now contains wells and well data, but no analysis has been defined yet. We will
proceed with the analysis of the well „SOUTH-P”F9‟.
Select the gas production phase of the well „SOUTH-P”F9‟ in the browser of the Multiwell tab,
and right-click to display the following popup menu:
Click on „Analyze‟ to access the Analysis information dialog:
Fig. B02.1 • Analyzing the gas production of well SOUTH-P”F9

In this dialog, accept all defaults (including the parameter default values highlighted in yellow),
and accept also the default PVT values displayed in the two following dialogs to create a first
analysis focused on the gas production phase of SOUTH-P”F9:
Fig. B02.2 • Analysis created on the gas phase of SOUTH-P”F9
Click on Extract and choose to extract the last portion of the data; you may do this by clicking
on the pick option in the time range group box ( ). Extract data from 5720 days till the end
(8401 days), with an initial pressure of 340 psia:
Fig. B02.3 • Selecting the extraction interval

Generate an auto-model (shift + model), followed by an auto-improve (shift + improve). The
data will then be matched by an analytical model simulating a vertical fully penetrating well in
a circular reservoir:
Fig. B02.4 • Final match on gas data production of SOUTH-P”F9
Click on Forecast, extrapolate the current model by a constant pressure step of 130 psia for
365 days and Generate:
Fig. B02.5 • Entering the forecast pressure history

When the forecast simulation is
completed, move back to the
Multiwell tab and select the node
corresponding to the gas phase
analysis we just performed:
The simulated forecast will be
displayed in the right-hand side
plot:
Simulated data values are also
visible in a tabular format:
It is possible to switch at any time between the match/forecast obtained with the model and a
match obtained on any Arps plot(s) contained in the selected analysis. This can be achieved by
changing the selection in the „Forecast with‟ combo-box contained in the right-hand side
toolbar:

Although all data and simulations are displayed by default with their own internal time
stepping, it is possible to alter this display at any time by changing the time stepping selection
in the main Multiwell tab toolbar:
For instance, the gas rates and forecast simulated at well SOUTH-F”P9 can be viewed with its
internal time steps, over a monthly average, or a quarterly average:
Original time steps:
Monthly average:
Quarterly average:

B03 • Analysis of Well GAS UNIT-A4
We will now proceed with the analysis of another well in the same document. In the Multiwell
tab, select the gas phase of the well „GAS UNIT-A4‟ and click on analyze. In the following
dialog („Analysis information‟) choose to initialize the PVT from the already existing analysis
„SOUTH-P “F9_G_1‟: . Accept the default parameters.
Click on OK to create the analysis:
Fig. B03.1 • Analysis created on the gas phase production of GAS UNIT-A4
Extract the data between 6825 and 8766 days, with an initial pressure of 640 psia. Perform an
auto-model and an auto-improve to match the gas rates with an analytical solution simulating
a vertical well centered in a circular reservoir:
Fig. B03.2 • Final rate match on well GAS UNIT-A4
The production forecast at this well will not be performed now but in a later step (while
building the field profile).

B04 • Creation and Analysis of a Well Group
The remaining production data are not all suited for detailed analyses. We will perform a global
analysis of those data through the creation of a group.
Move to the Multiwell tab, select the „Well groups‟ node and right click to display the following
popup menu:
Select „Create group‟ to enter the „New well group‟ dialog:
Fig. B04.1 • New well group dialog
All wells not analyzed already are checked by default. Change the name to „Other wells‟ and
click OK to create the group production. Select the new group node in the Multiwell browser to
display this group production:
Ecrin v4.20 - Doc v4.20.01 - © KAPPA 1988-2011 Topaze Guided Session #3 • TopGS03 - 12/16
Fig. B04.2 • Group production
Select now the group gas production node and create an analysis from it – once again, choose
to initialize the PVT from the well SOUTH-P”F9:
Fig. B04.3 • Analyzing the group gas production

Extract the data between 6523 and 8766 days of production. Because pressure data are
missing (they do not make much sense here…), only an Arps plot is created upon extraction.
Adjust the Arps parameters to obtain the following (approximate) match:
Fig. B04.4 • Approximate Arps match on the group gas production data
Go back to the Multiwell tab and select the analysis node to visualize the current Arps match in
plot and/or tabular format:

B05 • Creating a Field Profile
We will now build a profile for the gas production over the entire field, now that the various
wells have been analyzed in one way or another.
Go to the Multiwell tab, and expand the „Field Profile‟ node at the bottom of the tree:
Select the GAS sub-node and right click to select the „Create/Edit‟ option leading to the Field
profile dialog:
Fig. B05.1 • Field profile dialog
This dialog controls the various input used for building the field profile, as well as the extension
of the profile (until when it should be run). All wells are listed in the first column; in front of
each well are recalled all analyses using this given well as reference; then for each analysis a
list of possible ways to create an individual forecast (model if any + all analysis Arps plots) is
provided in the third column. Extend the current field forecast date from 1999 to 2002:
Ecrin v4.20 - Doc v4.20.01 - © KAPPA 1988-2011 Topaze Guided Session #3 • TopGS03 - 15/16
Then choose to build the field forecast from the models of analyses „GAS UNIT-A 4_G_1‟ and
„SOUTH-P”F 9_G_1‟ and from the Arps plot of analysis „Other wells_G_1‟, as shown below:
Fig. B05.2 • Selecting the sources used for field profile construction
The simulation range of both models is then reset to red, meaning that the models do not
extend yet until 2002. In fact no forecast has even been simulated in the analysis „GAS UNIT-A
4_G_1': in practice the last recorded history pressure will be extended until the end of the q(p)
simulation. Note that all coverage flags remain green, meaning that each well is included in the
field profile, and included only once.
Click on OK to validate, and wait until both models have been extended to the profile end date.
The resulting gas field production will then be displayed in the Multiwell tab:
Fig. B05.3 • Generated field profile for gas production

Two vertical lines are visible in the field profile plot, splitting the curve in three parts:
- The portion of the field profile curve left to the orange line is built from data only, as it
is not necessary to extrapolate any loaded production. In other words, this orange line
corresponds to the earliest end of production data among all wells.
- The portion right to the yellow curve is built from forecast models only, meaning that no
data are available anymore. This yellow line corresponds to the last time of recorded
production data among all wells.
- The portion between the orange and the yellow lines is built from both data and
models: data are used whenever available, otherwise the simulated rates are
considered.
The field profile is of course also visible in a tabular format, and may be averaged over
different time stepping (monthly average, etc…):
Fig. B05.4 • Field profile in tabular format with a yearly average.
Note that the pure forecast data are indicated in yellow, the data only portion in gray,
and the transition from data only to forecast only in orange.
It is possible to export the field profile as well as any gauge or model by a simple copy to
clipboard (select some or all data in the table + copy), or through the export option ( )
available in the right-hand side toolbar.
