Locals get another swing at summerWednesday when the sounds of Jamaican

legend Judy Mowatt, world music innovatorsBokante and expert curator Danny Hollowaytake over the Santa Monica Pier with a med-ley of classic caribbean hits, groundbreak-ing medlies and experimental jams. With theaddition of a steel drum band on the WestEnd Stage, Twilight on the Pier’s third con-cert, Island Vibes, promises to hit all theright notes.

Pier Corporation director Negin Singhsays reggae soul queen Judy Mowatt will setthe tone for Island Vibes.

"Island Vibes is the natural evolution fromwhat was known before as 'Reggae Night'for Twilight. We wanted to broaden people'sperception of what Island music is and couldbe, so we're not just having mind-blowingreggae from a great like Judy Mowatt, butboundary-pushing work by creole-singingBokante, who have blended the sounds ofGuadeloupe with new instrumentation that Itruly haven't heard before they camearound. Add to that a choir of steel drumson the West End and LA legends Dublab atthe Pac Park stage, and we've got ourselvesan incredible night,” Singh said.

Nearly forty years after the legendarysinger and lyricist recorded her debut albumBlack Woman in 1989, it is still regarded asthe greatest reggae album by a femaleartist. The album came after Mowatt joined

Bob Marley’s backup trio the “I Threes.” In1999, the Jamaican government made heran officer in the Order of Distinction for herservices to reggae.

The lead singer of Canadian groupBokante, Caribbean-born Malika Tirolien, writes lyrics for the group in both Creoleand French. A few years ago, she met theleader of the Brooklyn jam band SnarkyPuppy, Michael League, and they immediate-ly hit it off and decided to collaborate onenough songs to produce an album. With agroup of talented musicians, they formed themultilingual, multicultural and multi-genera-tional band that will get the crowd going onTwilight on the Pier’s main stage.

“Absolutely not to be missed is Bokante, who will open up the main stage with a con-temporary, energetic sound that is rooted inthe rhythms and driven by the lyrics ofGuadeloupe, the French territory in theCaribbean,” said Rum and Humble’s MartinFleischmann.

Nearby at the Pacific Park Stage, reggaefans can sample classic, innovative songsspecially selected by DJ Danny Holloway. The Long Beach native was a music journal-ist in the 1970’s interviewing the greats likeDavid Bowie, the Rolling Stones and EltonJohn before getting into the recording boothhimself. He contributed to three Bob Marleyalbums, including his breakthrough livealbum with No Woman No Cry. As a DJ,

he’s known for his expert curation andaccess to extensive music libraries.

Combined with specially curated vendorsfrom Smorgasburg LA, attendees are guaran-teed an immersive cultural experience tocontinue the 34th year of Pier concerts’Local Meets Global theme.

JUDY MOWATT

Judy Mowatt is one of the strongest, mostinfluential female vocalists in reggae music. In addition to faithfully recording and tour-ing with Bob Marley as one of the I-Threesfrom 1974 until Bob’s passing, she has putout at least nine solid solo albums. HerBlack Woman LP (Shanachie, 1980) is con-sidered by many critics to be the greatestreggae LP ever recorded by a femaleartiste. It was also the first reggae LP to beproduced by a woman.

Judy Mowatt is a very spiritual womanwho has continued to grow and evolve onher spiritual journey over the years. In herlive performances she shares with convic-tion her current thoughts and beliefs withoutcompromise. Her beautiful voice is still a joyto hear, strong and true.

Judy Mowatt is a legend.Judy Mowatt was born in the year 1948

in Gordon Town, St. Andrew Jamaica. Sheis an internationally acclaimed reggaeartist who rose to fame as one of the I-Threes, who were the background vocalistsfor Bob Marley.

At 13 years old, Judy Mowatt became amember of a dance troupe which touredJamaica and other islands in the Caribbean. Her ambition was to become a registerednurse, but instead she dedicated her life tonurse and restore healing to the hearts andsoul of mankind through her music. Her ear-liest influences were Aretha Franklin, OtisRedding, Curtis Mayfield, Dionne Warwick,Bob Marley, Marcia Griffiths, The StapleSingers and The Soulettes. A coincidentalmeeting with two teenage girls who wereearlier in her dance troupe led to the forma-tion of the Gaylettes, in 1967.

Judy Mowatt associated with BunnyLivingston/Wailer in the early 1970s, andshe has written some of the tracks recordedby Bunny Wailer. At that time, for legal rea-sons in the music business, she used alter-

nate names such as Juliann and Jean Watt.On The Wailers LP Burnin' (1973), twosongs with Bunny Wailer as lead singerwere written by Judy Mowatt under thepseudonym Jean Watt - "Hallelujah Time"and "Pass It On". Furthermore, the Wailersrecorded a single, "Reincarnated Soul",also written by Jean Watt and sung byBunny Wailer. This song – with the namechanged to "Reincarnated Souls" – wasincluded two years later on Bunny Wailersfirst solo album Blackheart Man (1976).

In 1974, Judy got her big break by join-ing Bob Marley's backing vocal trio the I-Threes. The trio had met working in the stu-dio and their voices had immediately blend-ed into something special. Marley himselfhad recruited them to be part of his backingband, The Wailers. Judy remembered, "Thefirst song we did was 'Jah Live' and Bobwanted us to work with him on his NattyDread album. The I-Threes continued towork with Marley until his death."

Her Black Woman LP (1980) is consid-ered by many critics to be the greatest reg-gae LP done by a female artiste. It was alsothe first reggae LP recorded by a womanacting as her own producer.

She became the first female singer nomi-nated for a Grammy in the category of reg-gae music when her Working Wonders LPwas nominated in 1985.

Judy’s discography includes MellowMood (Tuff Gong, 1975), Black Woman(Shanachie, 1980), Only A Woman

(Shanachie, 1982), Working Wonders(Shanachie, 1985), Love Is Overdue(Shanachie, 1986), Beginning (TuffGong/EMI, 1986 with Rita Marley andMarcia Griffiths), Look At Love (Shanachie,1991), Rock Me (Pow Wow, 1993), Love(African Love/Jet Star, 1998) SomethingOld, Something New (Judy M Music/TuffGong International, 2002)

Judy Mowatt is currently highly respectedas one of the best female artists in Jamaica.

BOKANTE

For the newly-formed international musicensemble Bokanté, connection is the foundationupon which all things are built. Among themembers themselves, the connections spanalmost two decades. But outwardly, the band’sformation was born in the desire to connectwith society and the problems most urgentlyfacing it. Rich in the sound of both delta anddesert, the unusual but evocative instrumenta-tion blends musical worlds to convey an urgentmessage of social awareness against the risingtide of exclusion and human indifference.

The word bokanté means “exchange” inCreole, the language of vocalist MalikaTirolien’s youth growing up on theCaribbean island of Guadeloupe. Now liv-ing in Montreal, she stands among 8 musi-cians from 4 continents, each one accom-plished in their own right and well versed inmusic far beyond that of their point of ori-gin. Three-time Grammy award-winning gui-

tarists Michael League, Chris McQueen, andBob Lanzetti (all from Snarky Puppy), percus-sion legend Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon,Sting), pedal and lap steel virtuoso RooseveltCollier (Lee Boys, Karl Denson), andunplaceable percussionists André Ferrari(Väsen) and Keita Ogawa (Banda Magda,Yo-Yo Ma) come together to create a diverseensemble rich in groove, melody, and soul.

An experiment conceived by SnarkyPuppy founder and GroundUP Music cre-ator Michael League (who has traded hisbass in for a baritone guitar in thisgroup), the process of formation was allbut conventional. The music and some ofthe melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical con-cepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyricsand melodies, demoing and ping-pong-ing the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never evenmet until the first day of recording. Bythe end of the week-long session inupstate New York’s legendaryDreamland Studios, the band felt abnor-mally cohesive. “Unity was paramount inthe formation of this group,” observedLeague. “Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-genera-tional, we all feel connected as musi-cians and people. And in combining ourdifferent accents I feel that there is a

Awhale tail speckled with beachfrontumbrellas, an Happy Human globe and

funky palm trees bring the imaginativeposter for Twilight on the Pier to life, as thecollective Bagavagabonds return to the Pierfor their eighth year with striking art installa-tions. The one-of-a-kind art pieces are anoth-er way the iconic concert series has turnedits 34th year into an immersive experienceunlike anything else in Southern California.

“Our vision for this communal installationwas to create a central place of intrigue; aplace to meet, sit, talk and engage one anoth-er amongst the crowds” said Izzy Holden.

Holden said the group worked with a vari-ety of skilled artists to build seven palm trees,

a geodesic dome and five tails surfacing onthe Pier. Artists from Bagavagabonds, includ-ing Tori White, Chance Cooper, ClaireBoutwell and Nicole Bautista (who is a highschool student at Foshay Learning Center)painted whale tails with images that rangefrom beachy to whimsical.

As for the dome, it is 16 feet wide and12 feet tall. Holden said the art is inspiredby classical plazas in Europe where peoplecan meet, congregate and talk with art pro-viding the backdrop. A ring of benches cir-cle the dome, giving attendees a spot to restfrom the festival.

“With the world acting as our centerpiece, the rest of the elements push the space and

installation outward, creating a festive envi-ronment with multiple layers,” Holden said.

The overall inspiration for the work camefrom the late Craig Hoffman, who wasinstrumental in building the concert seriesover the years.

“Craig took a chance on us eight yearsago when he hired Bagavagabonds to workon the Twilight Concert Series,” Holdensaid. “We wanted to create something forthis series that embraces Craig’s love ofbringing people together to engage in newand creative conversations. He loved art, theseries, the Pier and the Westside community- this is our way to celebrate his memory.”

The art collective Bagavabonds started

about fifteen years ago as a Robin Hood-inspired approach to keeping artistsemployed making art.

“We’re taking money from the rich andgiving it to our poor artist friends to get paidto make art,” Holden said with a laugh.

The collective has expanded over theyears, delivering on contracts for big brandslike Levi’s, Reebok and Ray-Ban as well asthe Pier.

“To do something on the Santa MonicaPier still gets me excited,” Holden said. “It’sgreat to see thousands of people come outand celebrate diversity in a time we need toget together and celebrate the positive.”

The band’s debut album, “Strange Circles,”goes from Zeppelin-esque blues stomp to folk-loric Caribbean kaladja over the course its tentracks, blending the extensive and variedknowledge of the individual players with astrong, yet empathetic, lyrical approach.Singing in both Creole and French, Tirolien’swords draw nuanced pictures of the struggleswe face in our world today- racism, therefugee crisis, a dying planet, apathy towardshuman suffering- and offer words of thankful-ness for those things which unify us, as well as

hope for the future of our race. Through it all,Bokanté is a vibrant image of what it wishesto see in the world: connection, unity, andlove- through exchange.
