Membership is a year-round activity. Talk to colleagues who are not members and encourage them to join for these reasons and other reasons you may have. Remember: belonging to a professional organization that promotes public education is PRICELESS!
Because there is strength in numbers. With nearly 3 million members, the National Education Association is the largest employee organization in the country. There are over 32,000 ISEA members. NEA's nearly half-million ESP members make NEA the largest organization of school support employees in the world. This numerical strength translates into advocacy and service -- for improved pay and working conditions, rights on the job, improved education for the students served and great deals on products and services members need.

Kudos! TO MEMBERS! PSUU recognizes the following members and locals for their recent accomplishments:
Dan Carver (Carlisle CEA) is a member of the Iowa Department of Education’s Computer Science Education Work Group. Scott DeJong (Ankeny EA) will receive recognition from the Big 12 Conference, the College Football Playoff Foundation and its Extra Yard for Teachers program and will also receive $1000 for classroom supplies. Patrick Hennes (Johnston EA) was named the Des Moines Register’s All-Iowa Coach of the Year and also received recognition for organizing district participation in the statewide Iowa Youth Straw Poll for the 2016 general election. Liz Ruddy (Southeast Polk EA) has a student winner in ISEA’s Design-a-Decal competition. The student’s design is the “U-NIQUE-CORN” found on the decal sheets all members received. Both the student and the school received recognition plaques.
Congratulations on these recognitions!

One of the changes embedded in the 2017 legislative overhaul of Iowa’s collective bargaining law is a requirement
for a recertification election to be held approximately one year prior to the expiration of every public sector collective
bargaining agreement (master contract). Here are some quick facts about these elections:
The Iowa Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) will conduct all recertification elections.
If a master contract expires on June 30, 2018, the election period will be October 10-24. If a master contract expires in 2018 on any date other than June 30, the election period will be September 12-26. If a master contract does not expire in 2018, there is no recertification election this fall.
PSUU locals facing a September election are: DMACC-HEA and Saydel EA.
PSUU locals facing an October election are: Ankeny EA, DMACC-ESA and Norwalk PEA.
All employees covered by the master contract (regardless of association membership) are eligible to vote in recertification elections.
Employees will vote YES or NO on whether they want to retain the association as the certified bargaining representative for the master contract.
The law requires a YES vote from a majority (50 percent plus one) of all eligible voters to win the election.
Failure of an employee to vote will be tallied as a NO vote.
If the association loses the election, PERB will immediately decertify the association as the certified bargaining representative and, according to PERB, the master contract will immediately become null and void.
A new vote to certify a bargaining representative cannot take place for a period of two years following the official date of decertification by PERB. No certified bargaining representative can exist during this two-year period.
The election is only about the association’s ability to bargain the master contract. It does not impact the existence of the association or the association’s ability to provide members with access to representation, legal services and other member benefits.
Voting YES does not mean the voter must join the association. It just means that s/he supports the association as the bargaining representative for the master contract.

The ISEA has made available funds to encourage members and/or local associations
to collaborate and create opportunities for community service or school projects.
The funded projects should meet an identified need within the community, be sustainable
and help build visible foundations for deeper relationships with students, families and
communities. The community outreach grants program is just one way the ISEA recognizes the good work of our members and works to strengthen Iowa communities. Find out more
details on our community grants program here: https://isea.org/wp-content/
