SMES TO SHINE UNDER ZIMTRADE BANNER AT ZITF 2019

“The theme ‘Export-led industrial growth’ speaks to our mandate to promote exports through developing and capacitating companies to be competitive internationally and to be viable exporters,” said ZimTrade CEO, Allan Majuru.

The six companies were selected from SMEs who partook in ZimTrade’s capacity building program Marketing and Branding for International Competitiveness (MBIC). The program equips companies with basic skills such as Effective Trade Fair Participation, Identifying Markets, Branding and Competitive Intelligence Gathering, Packaging for Export Markets amongst others.

The selected companies are from various sectors including clothing& textiles, decorative ware & crafts, processed foods and agricultural inputs.

“Last year the ZimTrade pavilion was a hub of activity with many deals and partnerships being established. We anticipate that this year will be nothing less than that and we are hoping that our companies will shine,” added Majuru.

One of the exhibitors expressed their excitement to be going to ZITF for the first time. “We have never exhibited at ZITF before and we thank ZimTrade for the opportunity to do so under their banner. ZIMTRADE RETAINS EXCELLENCE AT SADC QUALITY AWARDS

EXPLORE BLUEBERRY PRODUCTION FOR EXPORT DIVERSIFICATION

Representing Zimbabwe, this is the second consecutive year that the organisation has won this particular award. ZimTrade is certified under ZW ISO 9001:2015 which focuses on Quality Management Systems.

“Standards and certifications are a key component of export competitiveness and without them our companies have limited or no access to the lucrative global markets. With that in mind, as ZimTrade, we work hard to ensure that our local businesses adopt relevant quality standards which will open a gateway into lucrative markets,” said ZimTrade Chief Executive Officer Mr. Allan Majuru.

International standards also play a part in reducing technical barriers to trade, reducing production costs and offering opportunities for economies of scale on the international trade arena. Standardisation is an integral instrument that can contribute to Zimbabwe’s

economic growth and prosperity through the development of sustainable exports.

Additionally, the implementation of, and certification to international standards, by Zimbabwean companies, are a signal of quality to global customers, thus boosting the export potential and image of the nation. The issue of national brand building is critical and can be achieved through upscaling of quality standards.

“As ZimTrade we aim to be exemplary. We can only urge Zimbabwean companies to adhere to international standards if we ourselves are applying the same. Therefore, for us, standards are a culture, and we are proud to bring this token back home, as it celebrates not only us as an Organisation but Zimbabwe as a nation,” said Majuru.

ZimTrade, the national trade development and promotion organisation was, on Wednesday 13

March 2019, awarded the SADC Annual Quality Award for the best Company in the ‘Organisations with less than 100 employees’ category. The event was held at a glamorous event held at the Safari Hotel and Convention Centre in Windhoek, Namibia.

The SADC Annual Quality Awards aim to appreciate organisations which are contributing to advancement in quality in all sectors of SADC. They recognise organisations which showcase measurement and quality systems, procedures and processes that are in line with local, regional and international practices and who use continuous improvement to support national and regional economic development and growth.

was overwhelmed by the various types of berries which grow perfectly in Zimbabwe. “In terms of value, blueberries have a higher market value and have longer shelf-life among most berries. Raspberries are also very popular in Europe but have a shorter shelf life.” he said while discussing options with one of the farmers.

“There is, however, need for collaboration between the farms already producing and those wishing to venture into berries as the market is too large for local farmers to be competing,” he added.

The European market for blueberries has been expanding on the back of growing demand in ‘superfoods’ which have relatively higher nutrient content. The Netherlands is the third largest importer in the world owing to its position as the biggest re-exporter of fresh produce. In the five-year trading period between 2012-2016, the market grew by 159% in monetary terms.

In 2017, Zimbabwe exported berries worth about US$370,000 and this figure leaped to

US$4million in 2018 and the major export berries were blueberries, raspberries and strawberries.

Due to their shelf-life, blueberries can easily be transported via sea freight. This decreases the carbon footprint as well as reducing freight costs by around 60% and allows for competitive pricing by producers. Other berries like raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries tend have a shorter shelf-life and therefore need to be transported via air freight which tends to be more expensive.

Potential exporters should note that blueberry varieties are protected by certain plant patents or plant variety rights. Therefore, growing and selling must be done under license for these protected varieties. It is also important for prospective producers of blueberries targeting the EU market to closely observe the marketing and quality standards included in the standard for berry fruits of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Seasoned berries expert from PUM, Dr. Kees Van’t Klooster, who recently visited Zimbabwe earlier this month,

encouraged producers to take up market opportunities for berries. Dr. Klooster, visited for 2 weeks under the long-standing memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PUM, a Netherlands based senior expert consultancy and ZimTrade.

During his mission, Dr. Klooster met with various growers and farmers in Marondera, Shamva and Chegutu. He

CELEBRATING WOMEN EVERYWHERE #BALANCEFORBETTER

“Balance for better to me means, taking part in creating a world where us women have a fair representation in all spheres of life and are given an equal opportunity to succeed just like our male counterparts. It’s a drive to ensure that we cement our place in the world and are never disempowered again, from now on and for generations to come!” - Sheron Chingonzo, Export Promotion Officer, ZimTrade

“Over the last 30 years, I have seen a slight shift in perceptions towards women in the corporate world as, generally, our male counterparts realise and accept that we are, after all, able to do what they can do equally well, if not better. I believe that as women, now that we are more educated, enlightened and have equal opportunities with our male counterparts, it is our duty to dispel the stereotypes. The onus is on us to encourage the girl child that, not even the sky is the limit for them. ” - Vuyiswa Mafu, Acting Director of Operations, ZimTrade

“As women I believe we must come together and shatter the glass ceiling to ensure that there is a balance for better. It starts with us supporting each other before anything else. Organisations too must support females and encourage them to grow. As for me, I am proud to be part of an organisation that recognises individual talent inspite of gender.” - Christiana Hove, Receptionist, ZimTrade

“As I reflect on my contribution as a woman within ZimTrade, I look at how far I’ve come and the opportunities given to me that built my confidence. I am now a woman who is not afraid to stand boldly and share my knowledge on trade, a woman aspiring to help Zimbabwean companies in their quest to perform better and grow into viable exporters. I celebrate the better me, I celebrate the balance for better” - Jacqueline Nyathi, Client Manager, ZimTrade

Women play a major role in the global economy. It is encouraging to see more and more women stepping up as entrepreneurs and even in the corporate world.

According to the International Trade Center (ITC), women own close to 10 million of the world’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). And SMEs account for almost 80% of jobs around the world, so increasing women’s competitiveness boosts the likelihood of creating jobs.

In response to these challenges, ITC recently launched an initiative, ‘1 Million Women Entrepreneurs’, which aims to connect a million women entrepreneurs to global markets by 2020.

It is very evident that gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive and to transform. In the words of Diane Mariechild, “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.”

Blueberries

The productBlueberries are perennial flowering plants which appear blue or purple in colour. They are found within the genus Vaccinium and there are three types of blueberries, the highbush, lowbush and the half-high hybrid. The most common for cultivation is the highbush type.

BenefitsBlueberries are a popular fruit, easily added to cereals, salads and desserts or eaten as a sweet treat. Blueberries can be processed in every way imaginable, frozen, dried, syrups and purees, yogurt, juices dietary supplements and so much more.

This vibrant fruit is often overlooked and overshadowed by more exotic types of berries, but remains one of the most nutritious, antioxidant-rich type of fruit in the world capable of enhancing brain health and keeping the heart strong.

Trade StatisticsThe United States of America is a net importer of fresh and frozen blueberries. In 2017, USA imported 137.8 million pounds of fresh blueberries valued at approximately US$842 million. Over 50% of the product comes from Chile, which provides fresh blueberries to US markets during winter months of November through January.

According to Trade Map, in 2017 the global market for blueberries was worth US$2.73 billion. In Africa, South Africa has been ranked the largest exporter of blueberries to the EU followed by Morocco, but these two only account for 4.9% of the world market share.

MarketsPrices for blueberries are often higher, ranging between US$4.70 to US$16.50 per kilogram, but they are quick to perish and therefore must be handled gently and sold quickly. Blueberries are considered a superfood, which according to Trade Map, attracted an average world price of US$6 022 per ton in 2017, with USA, UK and The Netherlands paying an average of US$4 994/ton, US$7 547 and US$7 356/ton respectively.

Consumers in Europe are becoming more aware of health issues and pay more attention to their diet. Food safety is a top priority in EU and the most commonly requested certification for blueberries is Global GAP. The European market is increasingly appreciating this fruit because of its health and wellness attributes. Given the suitable and large land area available for production, Zimbabwean farmers are encouraged to increase volumes of output and take advantage of the iEPA to enjoy duty free quota free access to the European Union market.
