All Things Bright and Beautiful Cecil Frances Alexander

All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful,

The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,

Each little bird that sings,

He made their glowing colors,

He made their tiny wings.

The purple-headed mountain,

The river running by,

The sunset, and the morning,

That brightens up the sky;

The cold wind in the winter,

The pleasant summer sun,

The ripe fruits in the garden,

He made them every one.

He gave us eyes to see them,

And lips that we might tell,

How great is God Almighty,

Who has made all things well

Some classic poems which

we have read and forgotten

would inspire us at some

point in our life. This is one

such poem which can draw

ROCK ON The first time I saw them was at my friend’s home was a

group of people seriously covering songs in a rush… the band

consists of five members, which includes my

best friend Ananthu, Sanjay, Karthik,

Amarnath and Mahesh. Most bands would

want their songs to be very complex, out of

the ordinary but this band was I felt was

crazy… they wanted do whatever they felt

musically appealing. I never thought this

would work out. My curiosity was increas-

ing. The band wanted to play on some

stage as soon as possible to tighten up the

band. So they started their journey in Sep-

tember 2011 in their first competition, I was waiting right in

front and I imagined up the kind of pressure they would have

been under… but fortunately, they pulled it off as all them

had enough experience working with bands before. They

weren’t the best band that day, but they grabbed a lot of at-

tention. The band reworked again, this time made two songs

of their own and showed up at another gig and grabbed a

prize.

The band had been performing for a while

and won many prizes in which five of them were consecu-

tive ones, which includes the likes of Amal Jyothi college of

Engineering and Technology, kottayam, Sree Buddha col-

lege and the last of the consecutive

prize was winner at Crossroads

2012…. In each step that I took with

the band, I got to learn that ‘the faith

in us’ is a great medicine. It’s more or

less a large family of 7-9 members

including Nazim Mohammed, Akhil

Gopakumar, Vijith, Ali Mohammed

and the twins Deepak and Dilip. A

family in which 5 of them go on-stage,

rest of them help them in every way

possible, whether it’s the sound sys-

tem, lightings, travel, photographs, band management etc..

The family is empowering and is trying to grow out fast.

STEP ON IT!!!

India is providing quality products to the customers in

most of the areas. The unbelievable part is that the prod-

ucts offered in the automotive area are luxurious in the

present scenario. Customers in India are always attracted

towards luxury cars. In the past cars have 15 to 30 lakhs

were considered luxurious. The scenario has changed the

customers are willing to pay crores of rupees for obtaining

luxury cars. And also the customers are giving preference

to the brands All the top brands in the

world can be seen in our

country. We can see BMWs

and Benz as taxis and for

rental services on the Indian

roads.

Two wheelers are also not far behind. Last week Hero Moto

Corp signed a partnership with the “Buell” which is the

World’s leading stylish bike maker

Buell is a strong competitor in the two wheeler world mar-

ket. The partnership with Buell was initiated by Hero after

leaving the partnership with Honda. Hero wanted to at-

tract the Indian two-wheeler market by adopting the new

technologies provided by Buell. The famous Harley David-

son can be seen in our roads, which are owned by Indian

people. The price of petrol

has a drastic influence on

the demand of automobile

sector in our country.

CAR LEASING

Luxury car leasing has become so popular that it is now

a more common method of car finance than buying a lux-

ury vehicle outright. So why is this case? This guide will

explain how luxury car leasing works,

the vehicles available, who it’s right

for and how to get the best deal.

How does luxury car leasing

work?

The process for leasing a car is the

same for all types of vehicles. You

speak to a dealer and negotiate a

price for the luxury car of your choice

and then the dealer sells the car to

the leasing company. Signing a leas-

ing contract obliges you to make regu-

lar payments over a fixed term. At

the end of the term you return the car to the luxury car

leasing company. In some cases you might have the option

to buy the luxury car at the end of the term or trade it in

for a new luxury vehicle.

What makes leasing a luxury car different?

Though the leasing process for a luxury car is no different

to a standard vehicle, what is different is YOU – the con-

sumer.

Those who want to buy high-end vehicles tend to have

different values to regular customers – placing the empha-

sis on efficiency, quality of service and establishing a good

business relationship. Luxury car leasing consumers tend

to be less interested in haggling for a one-off cheap deal

and more interested in establishing a long-term relation-

ship with a company that they know will genuinely look

after their interests. They look for the same values in the

car leasing companies as they do in the cars themselves –

nothing but the best will do.

What are the pros and cons?

Leasing a luxury car is a more financially savvy option

than buying a new or nearly new luxury car. Though con-

sumers who lease luxury cars generally

have the money to buy the car outright,

they realise it’s smarter to lease because

the value of a car automatically depreci-

ates as soon as you drive it. Why put more

money than necessary into a depreciating

asset when you can use it for other things?

Indeed luxury car leasing works out as a

better value deal than leasing a standard

car because of higher residual values com-

pared to the manufacturer’s suggested re-

tail price. As a consequence, luxury cars as

a group are more commonly the subject of

car leasing than any other group of vehicle.

THE YOUNG SPARK

Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 8

An interview was conducted by the student representa-

tives with Mr. Rajeev Sebastin of Alokin Software at Tech-

nopark.. Alokin Software began as a consultancy called

pearlsoft in 2003. in 2011, the company was accepted into

the T-BIC’s program. Alokin offers WMD Consulting (web,

mobile, desktop), Turnkey solutions- in language comput-

ing, content management etc, R&D- in a variety of engage-

ment styles to create compelling products. Alokin now oc-

cupies a cabin in T-BIC where 7 employees work together

and the atmosphere is very much like a friend’s circle.

Mr. Rajeev is a very vibrant and unique character who has

got a very captivating personality who has got a very cap-

tivating aura to his personality. At the same time, he is a

very down-to-earth person with a fine

consideration towards the society.the

key idea was to interview a successful

young entrepreneur and Mr. Rajeev

Sebastin’s profile suited the most. He

gave a very intriguing interview

whereby he set our thoughts into mo-

tion.

What was your first venture?

Embedded systems we made small

electronic security systems and pre-

paid electricity meters for rubber park

Cochin. I wanted to do something

weird rather than something theoreti-

cal. So I paired up with some friends at college & started a

company. One of the service was to provide electronically

operatable curtains for hotels.

What were the problems faced at that time?

The curtains failed due to the weight and the problem

with hardware was that they needed investment unlike

software. Another problem was that there was neck to

neck competition.

Competition ?

Its good to have competition but when you have unfair

Competition, its bad.

What was your next initiative?

I left the company after 2 years for joining a social group.

we worked for bringing the ‘pazhaya libhi’ back through

technology. The problem was that the government was not

interested. The government at that time was bringing stan-

dards which were not good for the language. So we strived

to bring about a better result to the situation. That was a

non profit research group. We released the software in

2007, right now we are working on the second version.

What is your take on technology in India?

If you follow world market and compare that to what is

happening in India, there is a lack of technical perfec-

tion.what we produce in india is of very substantial quality

compared with that of outside.

Aren’t we making products in Indian

standards for Indian use?

Whether we are Indians,americans,all are

human beings.

Everybody wants products that work.most

of phones used are chinese, designed by

americans .there is nothing that we

make.but there are features in i-phones that

are Indian. Forgot electronics, take sports.

We have the second population in the world.

What is ther reason we don't have such

ideas? There should be people who have tal-

ent. How come we as a society are not able

to bring that? So coming to that perspective

what T-BIC does is a very good thing. They

help young entrepreneurs.

How much of impact is T-BIC able to create accord-

ing to your perspective?

The problem is that a lot of things are unfair– money, caste,

finance, lack of chances, family, educational barriers.

That is one force. Then there should be an opposite force

that is T-BIC. Now its time to see which one will win.

It’s a question of needs meets ends. Many are not

aware of their options.?

We cannot do anything. That again comes down to technical

problem. For example take government websites.

INTERVIEW

Page 9: TOP NOTCH

Page 9 TOP NOTCH

There are loads of them but you cannot actually find any infor-

mation you want. A simple and good example is the govern-

ment made forms and the spaces provided in them. That is

technical perfection. When you make something or anything

you have to consider the properties of that thing. Its going to

cost the same even if you design it badly or well. Then why not

we make it well?

People must have that point of view that we must make some-

thing good. Its not a question of competing with other people.

It’s a question of making something good and right for its pur-

pose.

Current venture?

As I was doing the software, along with that I was doing other

projects to make money. The current venture is an extension

of that. We are going to commercialize the ’pazhaya libhi’

Malayalam technology and take it to the public at a massive

level. So currently we are working on projects that we get to

fund our social projects.

Current status of the company?

Going well. Very lucky to have got into T-BIC. But one

of the main problems they are facing right now is HR

finding the right kind of people to join the company to

make a difference. Very difficult to find people who take

a risk especially for a small company. There will be peo-

ple in large companies even though they don't have any

intellectual freedom. There is some kind of fixation that

they wont work for such companies.

Message to the next-gen?

Should be more entrepreneurial. Should take whatever

you learn and apply that in your work, job or wherever

you go. And if your company does not let you apply this

then that company is not worth it. It is better to leave it

and join.

A prominent

threat to envi-

ronment in the

present day is

“garbage” or

waste. Waste

generated from a variety of different sources poses

a huge threat to the environment. Day by day new

sources emerge and more and more waste is gen-

erated. Along with destroying the environment in

many ways, it dwarfs the growth and development

of the economy.

Today the market is abundant of ‘eco-friendly’ and

green products with a hope to counteract these

adverse effects .but these can only been looked

upon as a white flag raised amidst chaos. Proper

management of waste is the only key solution to

the issue.

Waste can basically be classified into two catego-

ries – degradable and non-degradable. With an

effective waste management system, degradable

waste can be converted into bio fuels which can be

put into various uses.

Green waste management focuses on recycling

and reusing of waste materials.

INDUSTRIAL WASTE:

Yet another growing concern is ‘Industrial

Waste’. With higher demand and production

level coming up, the problems of waste emit-

ted by the industries are also increasing. In-

dustries in the present day are adopting vari-

ous waste management techniques. An effec-

tive waste management plan should include

certain vital aspects:

Prevent pollution

Save energy

Less damage to nature

Reduce use of material

Recycle and reuse

E—WASTE:

Electronic waste or e-scrap denotes the waste

from electronic equipments. As the technology

advances rapidly , the electronic gadgets get

obsolete on a fast pace. This again poses an-

other bouquet of problems. Most e-waste can-

not be decomposed and tend to emit radiation.

At the same time there is also a high possibil-

ity for recycling. The decision vests ultimately

with the companies to adopt a proper solution.

STOCK MARKET

Volume 1, Issue 1 TOP NOTCH

A Stock market,

known as Equity mar-

ket or Secondary mar-

ket is a public entity

for the trading of Com-

pany stock and deriva-

tives at an agreed

price.

The size of the world

Stock market was esti-

mated at about $36.6 trillion at the beginning

of October 2008.The stocks are listed and

traded on stock exchanges which are entities of

a corporation or mutual Organization special-

ized in the business of bringing buyers and sell-

ers of the Organization to a listing of stocks and

securities together.

In India BSE is the oldest Stock exchange.

Bombay Stock Exchange was established as the

`Native Share and Stock Brokers association

through the Presidency of Bombay with the ap-

proval of the Central Government. During the

period 1861-1875 trading in shares and stocks

used to takes place under a Banyan tree at the

place where the Bombay Stock Exchange is

now situated. The Stock exchange plays an ac-

tive role in the capital formation of a Country.

Investors can evaluate the worth or their hold-

ings and they can ensure security and set

norms for trading. They have efficient channel-

ing of savings

A Stock market is a centralized market place

for trading securities and fair open market

price for security. The market has its own rules

for assisting, regulating and controlling the

business. There is Price Fluctuation from mo-

ment to moment in Stock market. It is opened

to big and small Investors. It is one of the most

important sources for companies to raise

money. This allows business to be publically

traded, or raise additional financial capital for

expansion by selling shares of ownership of the

company in a public market.

An economy where the Stock market is on the

rise considered to be an up and coming economy.

In fact, the stock market is often considered the

primary indicator of a country’s economic

strength and development.

The movements of the prices in a market or sec-

tion of a market are captured in the price indices

called stock market indices. The constituents of

the Index are reviewed frequently to include or

exclude stocks in order to reflect the changing

business environment.

In India Stock exchanges provided an organized

market for transactions in shares and other se-

curities. There are 23 official Stock exchanges in

India. Among them 20 are Regional stock ex-

changes and 3 are National Stock exchanges,

they are:- National stock Exchange (NSE) which

was setup in November 1992, and became recog-

nized with effect from

investment. Lately, the ride has been more like

a free-fall, but things are bound to improve. The

trade. Playing this game successfully requires a

Stress management is “what we feel when we think we

have lost the control of events”. The term stress and

management are related to each other and management

encompasses a wide variety of activities to achieve a

goal. The concept of stress in natural science is a force

which acts on body to produce strain. The environment

of the individual is continuously changing and he has

therefore undergone a continuous process of adjustment

so as to remove stress. Stress is an adaptive response to

a situation that is either challenging or retaining to the

problem.

In this modern complex era, stress is inevitable

for the people of all walks of life. India is a developing

country and there is competition everywhere. So stress becomes an important aspect in Indian corporate

world for both employee and employer, individual and group of people

have different views about stress. A businessman views stress as an

emotional tension and for a railway controller it is as alertness and con-

centration.

Stress is always considered by people as a negative emotion in

the form of pressures to asserted by a situation, whereas sometimes

stress is considered in a positive manner in good ways such as an em-

ployee getting unexpected promotion.

The causes of stress or the stressors may be from within the

organization or outside. It may be considered as environmental, organ-

izational, groups and individual factors. Stress can be curbed by consid-

ering certain tips :

To avoid unnecessary stress such as avoid people who stress you out, take control of the environment.

Alter the situation like

willing to compromise in

the situation, be more as-

sertive, manage the time

better etc.

Accept the things which

you can’t change. Which

include trying to control

the uncontrollable, share

the feelings, then learn

forgive.

Make time for fun and

relaxation such as do

something which you en-

joy everyday, keep the

sense of humour, set

aside relaxation etc.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Page 13: TOP NOTCH

The term

green mar-

keting came

into promi-

nence in

late 1990s.

It is a phe-

n o m e n o n

which has

deve loped

particular importance in modern marketing. Ac-

cording to the American marketing Association,

Green Marketing is the marketing of products

that are presumed to be environmental safe. This

has led to broad range of activities including prod-

uct modification changes to the product process,

packaging changes as well as modifying advertise-

ments.

Today both consumers and marketers are becom-

ing increasingly aware of environmental problems

which make them understand the needs to switch

into Green products and services.

It also became a trend in business where compa-

nies create an image of themselves as an environ-

mentally friendly organization, in order to gain

favor with environment conscious customers. The

two main objectives of Green Marketing are im-

proved environmental quantity and customer sat-

isfaction.

A main challenge faced by today’s marketers is

to make use of limited resources available and sat-

isfy unlimited human wants efficiently with out

producing much waste or harm to environment.

Thus Green Marketing refers to a holistic market-

ing concept where in the production, marketing

consumption and disposal of products and services

happens in a manner that is less detrimental to

the environment.

Roadblock advertising refers to a kind of

campaign by blocking a particular media (it

could be a Television Network, a particular

newspaper or magazine, a radio station or even

a particular Internet Site) by preventing any

other advertiser from advertising for a particu-

lar period of time to maximize the outreach and

frequency of the communication message. His-

torical data however suggests that Roadblock

advertising is mostly used on TV.

Recently the major road-

block campaigns were from the

Hindustan Unilever Limited.

STAR Network undertook a

roadblock exercise for Hindustan

Unilever on September 17, 2009.

These channels featured only

Hindustan Unilever (HUL) ads.

STAR has blocked 24 hours of

airtime for HUL brands such as

LUX, Ponds, Lifebuoy and Fair

& Lovely. Along with this cam-

paign, HUL launched the ad of

Lux in which Aishwarya and Abhishek Bach-

chan was on a roll. It was part of an idea that

made them to reach exclusively to more than

100 million viewers in India at the same time

throughout the day. It was innovative and ex-

pected to bring stronger engagement with con-

sumers.

The very first roadblock attempted

on Indian television was in 1994 when a small

fire extinguisher making company used 9 dif-

ferent commercials to launch its diversification

into keep fresh kitchenware. They did the cam-

ROAD BLOCK CAMPAIGN The HUL 'roadblock' was the second road-

block initiative by the Star broadcast network,

the first one being for Hutch's transition to Vo-

dafone in September 2007. The day-long road-

block advertising that run across 30 channels on

star network brought in 92-95% brand recall for

Vodafone. They reportedly spent upwards of Rs.

10 crores to announce its name change to the

world, using a range of short and long commer-

cials exclusively in all breaks. Similarly, for

their very famous Zoo-Zoo campaign during the

IPL-2009. Since then it has been used by many

marketers to launch their brands

like: AIRCEL, Volkswagen etc.

and re-launch their brand

(Vodafone) in the market.

Previously, it was understood

that roadblock advertising are

successful only in Television, but

this myth was broken by Volks-

wagen using 16 pages of The

Times of India to launch their

Jetta, Passat in the market. To-

day internet is emerging as a

very good tool for advertising &

roadblocks are blocking the advertising way on

the internet as well through various social net-

working websites, etc.

Advertising, Media are the most dynamic

fields in the market, one need to be innovative

every second to be in the consumers mind. The

Roadblock Advertising is proving to be a good

Bachans have bagged their first endorsement together

and featured in the Lux advertisement for a whopping

amount of Rs.7.5 crore.

Recently, pizza chain Papa John's ran a road-

block ad on Face book promoting a free pizza

for every user who became a fan of the brand

on its Face book Page. Thanks to the home

page ad and an associated e-mail campaign,

Papa John's garnered 131,000 new fans in a

single day. As of March, it was the second fast-

est-growing brand on Face book after Olympic

swimmer Michael Phelps.

"The New York Times" has used a Face book

roadblock ad to increase its page fans on the so-

cial site and ignite a political discussion. It placed

the ad, along with video footage of President

Barack Obama, post-election last November and

almost quadrupled its Face book fans as a result.

In 1971, Rolls-Royce was crippled by the costs of

developing the advanced RB211 jet engine, result-

ing in the nationalization of the company as Rolls-
